Average Temperatures for iMac

What is an average temperature for an iMac (or computer in general) to be running at? How hot is too hot? I have a Temperature Monitor program and want to know when I should let my computer cool before damaging.

Don't worry about the temperature, the system has some build in monitors that manage the fans to cool the system down if it get to hot, and it will shut down before it get hot enough to do any damage.
Eric, I wouldn't be so complacent. Overheating, well under the thermal shutdown threshold, long term, can do significant hardware damage. And the fans are not programmed to ramp up quickly enough. Apple prefers quiet fans for a better "listening experience." That is why many of us use smcFan Control.
With smcFan, I recommend creating four or five different settings above the defaults, each in increments of about 15-20%, up to about 2K rpm. I try to run smcFan conservatively at the minimum setting needed to keep things reasonably cool. You don't want to burn up the fan motors.
I also run a small fan at the back of the computer aimed at the hottest section, the upper left corner as you face the screen. This will help dissipate a good deal of the heat at the aluminum back, which is meant to act as a large heat sink.
partyboy: why don't you just post your temps.
Here are some "normal" summer time temps. (I have smcFan set to my second lowest setting, here.) The ambient temp shown is completely out of whack. The room was probably in the low to mid eighties, Fahrenheit.
I wouldn't like to run a drive for long periods in the mid fifties, or the power supply (Board Proximity) in the mid 60s.
The temps will vary considerably according to what you are doing. If you are running a game, expect much higher temps, overall.

  • Storage temperature for iMac??

    Need advise please!!
I have a iMac G5(Ambient Light Sensor). I bought it in spring 2005 and it's the one that does NOT have the built-in web cam. I checked Apple's support and found it listed in the specs pages BUT my model doesn't show Operating or Storage temps. The model BEFORE it, iMac G5, and the model AFTER it, iMac G5 (iSight) both show:
    Operating temperature: 50° to 95° F (10° to 35° C)
    Storage temperature: -40° to 185° F (-40° to 85° C)
I want to store the thing in temps down to 40 below. Will I ruin the LCD or should I assume the temps listed in the other models also apply to mine?

It is a safe assumption that the temps listed for the other two models will apply to yours as well.
Just out of curiosity, where will you encounter -40 temps?

  • Normal operating temperature for imac

I have just downloaded "temperature monitor" and it indicates the CPU is at 46c. At times the cooling fan will kick in at 26c yet currently at 46c it is not running.

Mine is about the same as yours.  You can see the "idle" speeds of my fans.  iMac i7.

Edit:  At these speeds the sound of the fan is not noticeable.  Just a little airflow coming out the vent.

  • Highest temperature for imac

we had pretty warm days this summer and my computer room was burning the mac was hotter than ever so i decided to put an external fan/ventilator at the back approx. 50 cm away so it could cool down the mac which is the highest temperature that an imac can stand and perform without risking any damage ? not only the environmental temperature but also the imac's internal one

It would seem though that an intake fan with less cfm than the exhaust would cause a steadier flow with no interuption in the air current in the case while still giving an incresed amount of cooler air coming in. Now if an intake had more cfm, I can see where it might cause turbulance because the exhaust can not keep up.
I could be wrong though of course
Example, inlet cfm = 25cfm and exhaust fan = 35cfm. You'll be pushing in 25cfm of airflow into the system and drawing 35cfm of airflow out. 10cfm of airflow is not that tremendous that you can feel anything but to balance the flow, the 10cfm difference will be drawn in from the vents around the chassis.

I just installed two new hitachi 2Tb drives in both the drive bay A and B.
They are independently at 94 degrees F and 104 degrees F.

  • What is a normal operating temperature for a 15" MBP 2.33 duel?

i know this has been beaten to death, but i never can find what is considered to be a "normal operating temperature" for the MBP.
mac book pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

An MBP C2D should operate from 50ºC through to about 85ºC. I find mine averages in the low 50's however I don't do a lot on it. Anything that really requires processing gets done on my Mac Pro. It really comes down to how hard, or not, you push the processors.
Comparitively I find that it generally runs cooler than the PowerBook G4 1.25GHz it replaced however it does get hotter under maximum load. It just comes down to what you do with your MBP. You've basically asked "how long is a piece of string".

I use the imac mainly for editing Video which when doing so it has reached temperatures of near to 60° C which causes the program to become unstable and needs to be cooled down to operate correctly.
An Apple technician (by phone) advised me to download an smcfancontrol.  This allows each individual fan to increase speed and also advises the current temperature at °C.  The smcfancontrol has been downloaded but this has not resolved the problem.  By increasing the speed of the fan more heat is generated and creates additional noise.
I have since taken the iMac to an Apple Store for examination as suggested by APPLECARE when the fans were found to be working correctly.  An Apple Store technician carried out a test, but not whilst working under the pressure of FINAL CUT PRO when the iMac generates a high temperature.
The Temperature Specification  for this model is
    Operating Temperature 20 °c to 35°C
    Storage Temp.47°c
Clearly the temperature my iMac  is operating at is excessive and could cause the computer to break down prematurely.  Has anyone experienced this problem.

When was the last time you cleaned/vacuumed out all of your iMac's vents, slots and ports.
You need to do this with the iMac powered down, disconnected from power and everything disconnected.
Lay your iMac, screen down, on a soft surface, like a heavy towel. Use a small electronics vac, or portable or full size vac with hose and a crevice tool attachment and carefully and slowly vacuum every vent, slot and port on your iMac.
Then reconnect everything up, power up and download and install iStat Pro. Start working, then report the temps of your iMac after this has been done.
When using SMCFan Control, it is important not to run the fans at too high an RPM. This doesn't generate heat on its own, but will suck in more dust, lint and dirt into your iMac, and that will be the cause of additonal increases in heat.
I run my fans in the range of 1400-1600 RPMs. You can go as high as 1800 RPMs but it is important to keep the RPM range below either 1800 or below 2000 RPMs.
I, also, run a very small desktop fan pointed toward the upper back of my iMac to keep temps down even further.

  • Right CPU temperature for MacBook?

I downloaded an application today that lets me see how hot my processor is running, it displays the temperature in the menu bar. I thought it was running a little hot, so I did some Google searches and saw the average temperature was about 43-50C, mine's running anywhere from 56-60C.
Is the running temperatures different for MacBooks? In a sense, is this normal temperature for the MacBook? I have good ventilation for it, my fan works fine and all that, but I'm curious as to what average running temperature is, and what's safe, what I should be expecting, etc.
    Thank you!

We have had many discussions on MacBook temps. Normal temp is usually 50ºC to 60ºC. Then when it gets hot it can get up to around 80ºC to 85ºC. Some run cooler, not by much, and some run hotter.
Yours is normal. See this for info also. Apple Notebooks: Operating Temperatures

  • What is the normal temperature for MacBook Pro's when charging?

I really wanted to know because sometimes I feel like my MacBook Pro is too hot. I don't want anything to melt in there. So I decided to download a temperature monitor.

    Hi
I have a NewerTech external charger with an inbuilt battery calibrator. It provides 2 charging methods: it either fast charges or conditions (calibrates) the battery. Fast charging, which fully charges the battery in about 2 hours, causes the battery to noticeable heat up. However, conditioning, which discharges then recharges the battery, is so gradual that the battery remains cool (at ambient temperature).
The charger has 2 slots (for 2 batteries) and will charge or condition 1 or 2 batteries but not at the same time. For example, it will fast charge one battery and when finished switch to conditioning the second battery. This charging regime means the universal power supply connected to the charger can be less powerful (and smaller), i.e., it will deliver sufficient current to fast charge one battery at a time. Batteries may be left in the charger which automatically switches to trickle charge when continuous charging finishes.
The heat generated by the battery in the MBP is caused by fast charging and whilst I have never made any temperature recordings of the base of my MBP I can confirm that sometimes it gets so hot that it can be painful if in contact with the skin, e.g. resting on ones lap. This is normal. The battery also heats up when the MBP is running solely on battery power. Excessive heat could indicate a battery fault and it should be removed and examined immediately as any distortion, e.g., swelling, can damage the MBP.
An external charger/conditioner is useful if you have a spare battery, or two.

  • Max temperature for PB?

Is there a max ambient temperature at which one can use a PB G4 12" ?
Being in Europe, we don't have air conditioning in our home or office.. As the temperatures climb, I'm using a fan to blow air onto my PB to keep it cooler.
Today's temperatures were 32°C ( approx 90°F ). Two years ago it was edging 120°F (in the shade). From what I can see on the Apple website, they don't mention PBs specifically, but max temps for iMacs and Cubes are 35°C (95°F ).
Should I be worried about anything over 35°C?
    Cheers,
    Awfers

The max. operating temperature for the PowerBook is also 35° C. I expect this is stated because when the ambient temperature rises above this level, the PowerBook cannot adequately cool itself down. If you want to err on the side of caution turn it off until the temperature drops, however I'm sure you've noticed that the case gets ice cold when a fan is directed at it - personally I wouldn't worry about it.
