AVG Free Safe Search

I am a big fan of Firefox and have used it for many years.
I use my computer as a tool for both business and pleasure and as such I prefer not to be continually on a test drive. Reliable operation and continuous availability are important. I do recognise however the need to stay on top of threats and that some time needs to be spent on maintenance.
We seem to have gone from Firefox 6 to Firefox 13 in a matter of a couple of years and everytime there is an update AVG Free Safe Search becomes incompatible and I am left with the dilemma of whether to update or not. If I update Firefox I am left without the warm feeling of knowing that the web sites I am visiting have had some form of checking for malpractices. If I don't update Firefox I am faced with dire warnings of impending catastrophe.
I know Firefox is run by the good will of a large number of people but I can't help thinking that a small amount management supervision and good will from AVG ought to be able to ensure that a working addon is available at the time of the firefox update. This small step would do much to keep the users who simply need a working system and who are not geeks happy.
Keep up the good work

Thanks Andy - very helpful.
I have now fully updated Win XP and checked the operation of IE8 with Safe Search. It works fine.
Not the world's greatest browser but a seemingly fully functional tool.
Dare I say it if Microsoft can do it why not Firefox. I'm going to check Chrome as well. Mozilla has taken a fully loyal user and made me look at alternatives when it seems to me completely unnecessary..

  • I installed AVG 2011 Free, and Firefox 4 today on a friends compouter. The AVG Safe Search Toolbar is not available, even after disabling and enabling the Add On. I use AVG 2011 full Licence with Firefox 4 at home no problems. How do I fix this please

Works in IE no probs, Add On shows in Add On's List. AVG Safe Search Toolbar not available in toolbar lists.

Because I am having issues with Norton Security Suite with the upgrade to Firefox 4.0.1, I have been dealing with that as well, with no success to-date. However, I did notice today when I was looking in my trash, an interesting thing occurred with the upgrade that MAY have something to do with the apps. in Facebook not working correctly now with Firefox.
In my trash, there are several folders of 'Recovered Files'. Two of them are loaded with Internet Plugins for Facebook and were all dumped on May 1st, the day I upgraded to v. 4.0.1 Firefox and began having all my problems. For example, they are plugins like: plugin-cross domain.xml, plugin-gateway-1.php, plugin-102452128776.gz-72.json, just to name a few of them. Now, I am wondering if they were inadvertently removed during the upgrade process, or if they are in conflict with the new upgrade. Should I put them all back into Library -->Internet Plug-Ins to see if that resolves the problems? There are so many of them, I wish there was a way to mark them in some fashion in case I would have to remove them and not take the wrong ones out! Maybe there is a way I can color code them before I move them. I hate using 2 browsers!
I notice that 2 other people have this problem but I don't see where they left any post. I really wish Norton, Firefox, and Facebook would get this ironed out. I never had a problem with anything until this and I don't like to spend all my time trying to troubleshoot something I don't understand! Anyway, thanks for listening.

  • I used to have AVG free antivirus software on my computer. I uninstalled it, but every time I open Firefox and do a search, it comes up with AVG Secure Search results. I have tried the about:config stuff from the forums, but it is to no avail.

Had AVG free version. After Firefox updated to the newest version, AVG Secure Search results are the default. I have researched the issue for the past 3 days and have tried every option available on forums, etc. Nothing seems to work. This is very annoying and I'm about ready to switch to google chrome.

I ended up finding a solution.....went to Firefox tab on top left of browser screen. Went to help, restart with add-ons disabled. This takes you to the Firefox Safe Mode text box. Select "Reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults. This seems to have worked, as there is no longer an AVG Secure Search directed screen. Also, I installed Avast. Have had it on my tower PC and another laptop for 2 years with no issue. Screw AVG!!!

  • Update will nuetralize my AVG Safe Search--How serious is this and when will a fix be ready?

I would like to update Firefox, but have concerns that it will not be safe to browse if the AVG Safe Search is disabled. How serious it this and do you know if a fix will be forthcoming by you or does AVG provide a fix?

I had chatted with AVG Tech Help. They have confirmed that AVG Safe Search is still NOT compatible with Firefox 6 yet, only the AVG Toolbar is. They are working on it right now and will release the next update once it is done.
Here's the information from AVG forum, read the last post by DrDemento:

  • AVG Safe Search is not compatable with FireFox 6. I went through the steps from the website, but they don't help. Can it be enabled again?

I restarted FireFox again in safe mode, cleared all of my cache and cookies, and nothing seems to be helping. I even tried to go through my userface of AVG Free edition 2011, but I didn't even have the options it was telling me to go through.

Also this from AVG: Please rest assured you are still protected by AVG even if you have already upgraded to Firefox 6.0. The AVG Active Surf Shield component is still checking all data and will prevent you from accessing malicious content even though search results verdict icons are not available temporarily.

  • How about telling us in advance what programs or plug ins will NOT work with the new Firefox. I just lost my "safe search" feature with AVG, and I think that's sort of important!

Just upgraded to Firefox 6 (which I like, by the way), but when I upgraded to 5, I lost the gaming feature when I installed AVG, and now I've lost the AVG safe search feature, which I think is very important considering that I have grandkids that use my computer,
How about telling us in advance (and I'm running Firefox, so a link would be easy) whether or not we're going to lose an important feature like the one I lost?
So, how do I get back to Firefox 5 without uninstalling and reinstalling so I can have that safe search feature back?

DURIM - Okay.  I would expect the "Cache Warning" message because your default directories would not be the same as the ones in the settings file I generated.
If you go back to the "7.0" directory and open the "Logs" folder, can you copy the "Audition Log.txt" file and send it as an attachment to [email protected]?  We'll take a look in that logfile and see if it gives us more information about why this is failing now.
Also, do you have any other Adobe applications installed on this machine, such as Premiere Pro?  If so, do they launch as expected or fail as well?
I do have the trial Pro version of Adobe reader, but I have not activated it, because I fear the same thing will happen did it. I cannot afford to activate the subscription for that product and take the chance of it not working either. I depend on those two programs religiously. Here is the files that you requested. I appreciate any help you can give me to get this audition program started

  • When opening a new tab, can I make it go to my homepage? Currently "AVG Safe Search" opens with a new tab, I want it gone!

I downloaded the latest AVG update and with it they were more than happy to hit me with a stupid search bar at the top of Firefox, as well, when I open a new tab it goes to a page that looks like Google but is the AVG Safe Search page. I don't want it to happen! I would like if I could set it so Google home opens when I open a new tab but I haven't been able to find that option.

    Try this?

  • It would be appreciated if you could support AVG Safe Search in Firefox 4.0, just as you did for previous versions of Firefox. Are you planning to add support for AVG Safe Search (version 9.x)?

AVG Safe Search provides icons after the names of websites to indicate their security status. All of your previous versions of Firefox supported this feature. Could you please make it available again in Firefox 4.0?

It is down to AVG to make their add-ons work in Firefox 4, not Mozilla .You need to contact AVG about their plans for supporting Firefox 4. It is quite common for companies to only support a new version of a browser after it has been officially released, and not support it during the beta/release candidate phase.

  • How do I stop Firefox Start Page using AVG Safe Search?

When I use the search bar on the Firefox Start Page it uses AVG Safe Search. How can I change this so it uses Google instead?

See the [[Firefox has just updated tab shows each time you start Firefox]] article for details of how to solve this.

  • Frequent "Firefox has encountered a problem and needs to shut down" window. Need to disable adblock plus and AVG safe search to continue. Any way to fix?

For about a third of websites I visit, at some point I receive a "Firefox has encountered a problem and needs to shut down" window. I have to disable both Adblock plus and AVG safe search in order to continue. This used to happen for two or so sites, and I disabled the ad-ons before going to those sites. It has increased to the point that the adblock plus and safe search ad-ons are becoming pretty useless. Is there any way to rectify this problem. Sending error reports has no effect.

I tried to update but it would not allow me to update, isn't that odd!?
Have you changed anything in the Photoshop installation areas?  If the updater doesn't find a pristine installation it will fail.
The only area you should ever put anything into is the plug-ins subfolder.  Everything else is hands-off.

  • Does your incompatability with my AVG safe search leave me vulnerable?

You're trying to get me to upgrade to 6.0.1, but say you will disable AVG Safe Search 10.0. That appears to leave my computer vulnerable and has stopped me from upgrading to your new product. You say you'll make the upgrade compatible with AVG, but when? And what happens to my computer's security in the meantime? Thanks!

  • How can I update to firefox 6 nowing that both my anti-virus(avg safe search) and my user srcipt manager/editor(greasemonkey) add-ons aren't compatible?

you are sending me a firefox security update but it is not compatible with my anti-virus(avg safe-search) and my user script manager(grease monkey). I sincerely doubt I'll be surfing more secure without them.
I won't update until you fix that.

Unless you want to Test the 6.0 Beta 1 then just install Firefox 5.0 to stay on the Release channel and only get release update prompts whether security or next Major release.
Actually that prompt is not really a security update per say but a update option to try the 6.0 beta 1 since you are on the Beta channel due to still using the 5.0 Beta 7 as you said.
Actually there is a recent version of GreaseMoneky that will work, however not sure about the AVG extension at moment.

  • Mozilla 5.0 have problems with AVG Free version antivirus?

    hello,
after I upgraded to 5.0 Mozillacame a warning saying that the antivirus AVG Free Edition, which has my laptop, was not compatible and that it was disabled. is this true? I had the antivirus review the laptop, got a problem and when I want to delete it crashed. I had to wait for it to discharge the battery, start Windows in safe mode and restore the system. Should I install another antivirus? Regards.

This does not address the AVG proble.
I have microsoft Vista, was very happy with the 4.0 version, downloaded the 5.0 and was so miserable I uninstalled Firefox. I lost the menu bar therefore could not exit. Followed directions to restore menu bar using ALT, that failed. I was left with a full screen with no way to exit other than rebooting. Then I tried reinstalling Firefox 5, same frustrating problem. I clicked the icon but its selection provided nothing to resolve my problem. So until they get their act together, it's deleted and I'm gone.

  • I can't open Firefox 3.0 now I've upgraded to AVG free 2011

On 29 Nov I upgraded to AVG Free 2011. Then I clicked the Firefox program icon to open Firefox, but nothing happened.
I then tried to download Firefox 3.6. I found a large number of programs downloaded to my temp file but no 'Install' instruction appeared.
I attempted the solution proposed for AVG 9.0 but found no link from AVG User Interface to AVG Internet Security. Is there a solution for AVG Free 2011 available? Or is my problem a different one? How do I get my Firefox toolbar back please?
