AVG: No Longer My Cup of Tea

A few days ago, I removed AVG from the list of free security in the Lenovo KB.
AVG has had some problems lately. Here is today's:
If you are unable to boot to your operating system after the recent AVG 2011 update 3292,

  • Air drank cup of tea. Now it doesn't charge with it's own charger and 2 keys got broken.

    Hey guys.
My wife spilled a cup of tea with sugar on her Air. Now it doesn't charge with it's own charger (14.5V, 3.1A) but it does with macbook pro's charger (18.5V, 4.6A). This is weird. Our local "certified" reseller (we don't have Apple Store in out country) suggested to avoid fixing it, since they could not identify the problem. I think they're lame but I'm ok with uncomfy charging. But there's still 2 keys not workng. The comma and period keys. These are quite important and used very frequently. Resseler suggested to replace keboard, but €250 is a bit pricey.
So what I was thinking — to get them fixed by myself. This is apparently circute closing, which in theory is easy to fix. I have experience disassembling our mid 2011 Air. Not the keyboard, but I did clean the logic board and most of other compartments.
What do you think? Does it work disasembling the front cover from the keyboard and fix it? Are they any downfalls assembling it back?
    Thanks.
    Alex.

The problem here is going to be twofold - getting the needed part(s) and making sure the MacBook Air will work long term after any repair you do.
Apple does not sell repair parts to consumers, so you will need to look into a used parts market. Be sure you get the same exact model.
One big problem is that the MBA has a soft-cell battery.  If someone that doesn't know what they're doing punctures, squeezes, flexes, or even looks at the battery the wrong way, it could literally blow up in their face.
You may end up with a totally non-functional MBA even after spending money on the parts and have nothing to show for your efforts.
If you can, at least you should be able to use the computer as it is now with an external keyboard. That might be a better solution.
    Best of luck.

  • Fell in cup of tea - worth fixing?

My iPod nano fell into a cup of hot tea on my bedside table and I'm wondering if I should bother taking it in for service. It was attached to a cable, so I was able to pull it out quickly, but afterwards it had what looked like a BIOS displayed on the screen and then it eventually went dead. I let it dry for a week, and just tried plugging it into my macbook, but it's still completely dead.

Leave it connected to power for at least a half hour ( a wall charger works best for this) and while it is connected to power Reset it (hold down the sleep and volume down buttons). It may take several tries. If it revives fully charge it.

  • I have AVG, once I updated Mozilla the AVG no long gives "check marks" for safe websites. Why?

I have AVG spyware. I received a message to update Mozilla. Once I did the update my AVG was noted as incompatible with Mozilla. I went through the steps given to add AVG back in. It doesn't appear to be working. Normally when searching the web, AVG gives a check mark indicator on safe sites. Now it does not.

The Safe Search toolbar has not been updated by AVG. Read this from AVG: http://forums.avg.com/us-en/avg-free-forum?sec=thread&act=show&id=171434

  • Has anybody experience anything like the following: I dropped a cup of tea on my mac pro and hence took it in to Apple for a quote. £924 so I took it home and bought another one. When I took the back of the damaged one a section is missing.

What should I do, even if broken it surely it should come back whole.

go right back with the mac with the missing part and demand it be returned.  They have no right to keep it.  Especially since no repairs were performed.

  • Creating Sing-a-Long Animation

I need to create a sing-a-long for the DVD of my musical. Here's what I want to do and I think Motion is probably my best option for doing it, but I'm not exactly sure where to start:
I'd love to do the infamous bouncing ball. The text is across the screen and the ball bounces on top of each word as the viewers are supposed to sing it. As the ball touches the word, the word changes color. The ball also bounces in time to the music and continues it's bounce during pauses in the singing. I fear this may be far too complicated, so here's option two:
Karaoke style. The words are on screen and each word changes color as it's supposed to be sung. Typically in karaoke, it looks like the color is spreading across the words. Again, though, the color changes have to be timed to the music.
I have FCS1 with whichever version of Motion comes with it. Sorry, not at the computer it's on right now. If it's better to do this in some other program, I'd love to hear suggestions. I also have Photoshop, but I've never tried to do animations in Photoshop and would rank my abilities as 'novice', so I would not find this an attractive option.
    I appreciate any suggestions.

    Hi,
firstly let me say that doing a bouncing ball, or any karaoke style animation is a lot of work. its not hard its just a long slog. So good luck!
Also just to clear, AFAIK, photoshop is for manipulating still images so you would not be able to create animations in it. You could certainly create still frames to help you, in fact light bulb on that has just given me an idea.
For the bouncing ball: For the sake of argument lets assume the song/s are a constant tempo, if not that makes it harder but not impossible. I think first of all you would want to create the bouncing in time ball, in its own project, no words yet. You might make the ball in photoshop, or just simply create a round object in motion and colour it whatever colour you want. So now you animate the ball so that it bounces on the beat, you will export this as a movie later so you only really need it to bounce once, from the top of its fall and back up again. As we dont really need to get involved with physics, you can simply keyframe the end positions in time. Also making the sure the ball stays at the bottom of its bounce for say a couple of frames will maximise the effect of it looking like its hitting on the beat. (You may also want to change all the Interpolations of the keyframes to linear, otherwise they ease in and out and they will never look like they are hitting the beat ).
Once you have this looking nice and its looping away to the beat, you can export it as a movie. We need the alpha channel so use Animation - millions of colours + codec, which will keep the alpha channel. Of course you dont have to use an exported channel you could use a keyframed object throughout the project, it just becomes messy and hard to manage. Nice to lock things down.
Now you need to create a new project and put the words in time roughly with the music. You will of course need to create many text objects for all the lyrics, how many words you can fit on the screen will of course depend on the font and its size, and the length of words. Also of course you will weant to try and split the words into meaningful chunks. You may find that you need to change the font or size even after you have created many objects. There is an easy way to do this: simply cllick and drag the parameter (eg position) from the inspector and drop it onto the object you need to change. Bear in mind this will take keyframes along with it also.
So now you have a track of words that appear in the right time. Again you could export this asa movie and import into another project, or simply drop all the text objects into a group for easy management. Either way the next step is the same.
Once you have all the words in place looking great, all within safe text zones for tv etc, create a copy and colour the text the highlight colour you need. Next you create an animated mask to reveal the coloured word over the normal text. Now thinking about this, this would be a terrible amount of work,, and not the easiest to do either. There must be a simpler way to contruct this!
Anyway once that is done, now simply add the bouncing ball to the mix. You can key frames it position along the words as the track progresses. Now it should bounce up and down in time with the music and hit the word as as they change colour.
well all of this was off the top of my head, as i drank a cup of tea and fired up the machines ready to start the day. There may well be a far easier way to do it all, but don't underestimate the work involved. Hopefully it will have given you some ideas.

  • Spilt tea on my MacBook Pro, please help!

Im really upset with myself for letting this happen, I learnt the lesson of not having liquids by electronics the hard way....
Basically, I placed my cup of tea (with milk and sugar in it) next to my MacBook Pro and accidentally knocked my cup over to my Mac. I had it plugged in charging as well while this happened.. I quickly ran to get a towel and turned my Mac upside down to get the liquid out. However, I noticed that before I turned it upside down, my Mac turned itself off and the light on my charger stopped working...  About 10 minutes later, the fan turned on on my Mac even though the laptop was off.. What does that mean?
I called apple and was advised to not turn it on for at least 72 hours. I've been reading forums and it states that basically my Mac is ruined. I have so many files on it dating back to 2010 and i really don't want to lose them. If I get it fixed, how much would it cost me? can it be salvaged?
    This *****.

    HI there,
Its the 2010 13 inch MacBook Pro. Model A1278. I just checked it now and the fan is running again.
That will be because there are short circuits on the logic board, it will continue to happen until the battery dies.
You need to open the Mac and remove the hard drive. It is probably fine. Then you can put it in an external enclosure (or connect with an adaptor cable) and get to your stuff.
You'll need a new Mac as well I'm afraid. Is it insured? (check your homeowners insurance)
And do not plug the Mac back into the charger (but you knew that )

  • Spilled tea on iBook, help!

My daughter knocked over a cup of tea onto my laptop, and I can't get it to start up again. Not much liquid got onto the computer, and what was visible, I dried immediately.
I tried booting it off the install CD, but it can't find the hard drive. Restarting shows the folder with the flashing question mark. I also tried resetting the PRAM, to no avail.
Is there anything I can do? Last backup was on the 8th, so several days would be lost. Help! Thanks.

It's very important the machine thoroughly dries, otherwise corrosion will occur on the circuitry.
As the previous poster suggested remove the keyboard. If you know how to remove the RAM, it would be helpful to do so and dry it, as well as the socket its inserted into (gently dabbing both with a paper towel).
This is a good, albeit painful, lesson in keeping liquids away from the computer. Two computers ago I spilled a fruit smoothie onto my desktop's keyboard - not a pretty sight.

  • Updating thunderbolt v. 1.0 runs so long and still on the list updates.

    Good Sunday to all,
For two days I've noticed that the Thunderbolt 1.0 update for my mac 1.7.3 lion, even after numerous attempts at installation is not installed.
Basically if I check the available aggiornamneti HIS update is always available even after I installed and rebooted, I assure you that I will have done more than 10 times.
I also ran the disk verification and permissions that have not completely solved the problem.
Nahce I tried to download the update from apple site masuccede the same thing.
The machine restarts and displays the scermat with the apple and the buffer feed shortly after the machine shuts down and restarts and once charged his desk, going to check for updates, quell'update is always there.
I specify that this is a latest model iMac, Mid 2011.
On the web I noticed that many resolve their macbook connecting to the mains but in this case seems to me obvious that the solution is not adoptable.
If you quelche news or even any idea please reply to this topic.
    greetings

Look for the FAQ on this page..
LR will be slow at the start when it populates metadata and renders the standard previews.
    Go to Grid
    Select 'All Photographs'.
    Select ALL
Got to the Library>Previews menu and Select 'Render Standard Previews'
Go get a cup of tea and read the new Digital Photo Pro. It will take a little time but LR will be zippy once this is done.
When you import news images make sure 'Render Standard previews is checked, because it keeps Lightroom fast.

  • Spilt tea on iPhone 4 - PANICKING LIKE MAD

    Hi everyone!
So I knocked a cup of tea (milk and no sugar, if it's relevant) over on my desk and it landed on my iPhone 4.  I dried it with a cloth pretty much instantly and it was still working - except for the external speaker.  It won't make any noise (though I've tried it with headphones and they work okay).
Any advice?  I've removed the SIM, turned it off and had it in a box of rice on top of the radiator for about 2 hours.  I'm a poor student so I can't afford to replace it if it's broken!  Is it possible to have the speaker repaired, and if so how much could this cost?
    Thanks!

Just for the future, and forgive me if it's obvious, but I have an iPhone 4 from the first day possible, and adopted a simple rule: never have the phone on the same surface or a lower, associated surface, than any liquid. Never let a child hold it. Always have it in a cover that protects all sides of it. Never leave it near an edge that my cat can pull it down from. Never carry it in a pocket from which it can escape without jumping or undoing a zip.
It cost me about six hundred quid. I should be less paranoid?

  • HELP! spilled tea on macbook!

So the other night I was working on a term paper when suddenly my phone rings.
And so, without thinking, I quickly went to pick it up.
But when I did so, I accidently knocked over a cup of tea.
I use no cream or sugar and it was about half a cup.
    My macbook suddenly shuts down.
And needless to say, I started panicking!
I have learned a couple of things on this forum.
I have flipped it upside down to dry for about 3 days before I turned it on again.
What happened was, it went to the Apple Sign, but after about 3-4 seconds, it goes into a deep sleep mode. And when I try to turn it back on again, it remains in the deep sleep mode.
What's wrong with it? Is the logic board fried?
I checked my battery by pressing the button on the back and it seems to be fully charged.
    Please help! I'm desperate! =(
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

It may not be dry yet. Or it may be fried. Really, the only way you're going to find out, besides waiting a few more days, is to take it to Apple. And even if it works again, the acid in tea is, I believe Not a Good Thing.
That said, a few years ago I spilled about half a cup of water on my beloved tiny Sony. It wouldn't start, and I sent it to Sony, which said it needed an $800 motherboard. The computer was 3 years old, a new one cost about a thousand dollars, and so I bought the new one and Sony returned the old -- which worked just fine when I turned it back on.
So there is always room for hope, but perhaps not a lot of room...
Why not wait a few days, try again, and if it doesn't work, try booting from your install disks and check out whether all your hardware is working. If that doesn't work, the only recourse is probably to send it to Apple.

  • Blackberry Curve dropped in tea

I have dropped my Blackberry Curve 9300 in my cup of tea and I have dried it out with rice and it turns on fine but my keyboard is been messed up. Every key does the wrong letters or not what they are suppose to. Is there anyway I can reset my phone to stop this happening or doing anything else?

    Hi liamkavfc
When our device get wet we had to follow certain rules  like never try to turn it on unless you are sure that the device is completely dry and yes I must say you are lucky if  you are able to repair that device at that much cost. Have a look at this Article : Got Your BlackBerry Wet?
Yes you can try repairing your device but Updrade is a good choice .I wish you good luck.

  • OMG!  Hot tea on on my macbook pro!!!

my 2 year old daughter just spilled a huge cup of hot tea on the keyboard of my macbook pro!!! I just about s**t myself.
I am totally amazed that it didn't kill it! That was a lot of water poured directly onto the keyboard.
Props to Apple for making great hardware
i had to pull a few keys off and blow out the tea leaf particles so the keys would press down all the way, but other than that, it seems to be fine. now i just have to deal with the post traumatic stress of it all...

Here I was thinking you were going to be complaining about the heat of the MBP and saying you could make a cup of tea on it...
    Anyone else have that thought?
Glad to hear everything is working well. Did you give it time to dry out?

  • I spilled some tea on my macbook air.

I spilled half a cup of tea on my macbook air, and it shut down right away. Do you think that it will be able to work again?

Your system shut itself down immeditely ... which says much.
Tea/milk/soda all are "more than simple water" and leave residues behind in the deep internals.
Talk to Genius Bar, but DO NOT turn it on again or plug it into wall power again until (actually IF) the Genus Bar clears it.
Others have reported repair bills of $900, since it is considered "accidental damage" and not covered by warranties.
    Good luck.
