Avi. compression - do i need pro?

I searched this board and couldn't find my answer. I'm just beginning on an Apple (and I love it) and even newer to the world of video.
I have some .avi files that I want to put into iDVD, but the files are so big that I can barely put anything on it. I have Quicktime 7, but do I need Pro to do this? I don't need the video to be the best quality (because it wasn't recorded at the highest quality).
Any help would be great for this newbie.
Thanks

Your other "i" Apps will convert nearly any file that the QuickTime Player can view. Some formats (muxed) will not convert with the audio track.
Do a short test before committing a lot of work into an iMovie project. You'll know in a few minutes if the file will work.
Basic answer. If QuickTime can "play" the file, the other apps can convert it without the need for the QuickTime Pro upgrade. If it doesn't play in QuickTime you'll need other, third party, software to convert the file to QT formats.

I strongly recommend you use compressor to do the conversion (if it will open the files - since quicktime will open them, it will more than likely do it.
Compressor allows you to customize presets and save them and apply them to multiple files.  Although the interface may seem daunting, it's actually pretty simple.
Even if you can edit the avi in fcp, it's not a good idea.  Liable to cause problems down the road.

  • Converted .avi to .mp4 for Premiere Pro CS6 but receive a header error.. help?

When I imported .avi video file into Premiere Pro CS6, only the audio played. I used VLC to convert the .avi file to .mp4 through a batch file. Now when I try to open the .mp4 file into Premiere Pro CS6, I receive an error "File cannot be opened because of a header error".
I've tried converting the .avi file to .mov and .wav but they receive the same header error.
I've also tried opening in Audition and resaving it as .wav pc but it still won't import to Premiere.

First, depending on what is inside the AVI file, it should/might be "naturally" supported by Premiere

  • Editing .AVI files in Final Cut Pro 5

I am trying to edit .AVI files on Final Cut Pro 5 on a volunteer basis.
I have converted the files to .MOV files with Quicktime Player.
I am able to import one of these files into Final Cut Pro 5, and can even watch it in the viewer.
But when I place it in the Sequence tab to edit it, I get a screen that says "UNRENDERED" for the whole clip.
Based on past experience, the video would be harder to edit in a rendered state.
Any advice on how to edit .AVI files would be much appreciated.

AVI files are quite similar to some .mov files, but the devil is in the details (so to speak.)
You don't give any particulars, so I'm going to assume you're working with standard definition NTSC video. Additionally, I'll assume that your system is PowerPC Mac since only FCP 5.1 and higher supports Intel processors.
FCP uses sequence presets that spell out the parameters for the timeline. If a clip is dissimilar or acquires enough filters to be functionally dissimilar, the timeline will become red for that portion of the timeline. The same is true for the audio portion of the clip.
The terms "QuickTime" and ".mov" (and probably ".AVI" for that matter) are kicked around as if they are specific but in fact they are quite vague. It's like saying you have a Ford; without any additional info like model and year,  it's hard to get down to cases.
Use Compressor or QuickTime Pro to convert your footage to DV/DVCPRO-NTSC (if it's SD and you're in North America) and make sure the audio is converted to 48KHz/16-bit. This should match the NTSC presets and your timeline should a "cool" color (dark blue to light green) and playback nicely.
Depending on the amount of processor power your system has, you may be able to play back clips with filters or even two or more layers of video without rendering. To be frank, don't count on it because someone has had well over 5 years to upgrade the system and hasn't so it may be "peaked out" already. You can usually step through the timeline using the arrow keys or by rendering short segments if you practice good "timeline hygiene" i.e., keep the timeline as clean as possible, don't strew clips over many video layers and let them stack up.
That should get you going, I strongly recommend you take a little time to read the help docs/// they actually can help.
    Good luck!

  • I have my folio ready to go, I think I need pro edition, what are the steps to publish?

So I've got my publication ready to go and things are a bit hazy of how I go from: "Cool publication on my Adobe Content Viewer" to "User downloads my app and can then access my publications monthly."
I'm pretty sure I need pro edition, when I called Adobe tells I was told I would need to speak to a reseller. That's confusing as you can buy pro edition straight on the Adobe website.
How many downloads does that give you?
What's the difference between monthly and annual subscription?
Do I need to do something with the Apple App Store or is that all handled when you buy pro edition?
This part of the process has been a bit confusing.
Forgive me ignorant questions if all of this is explained somewhere but I couldn't find it and I couldn't get the Adobe 800 number to answer my Qs.
Thanks for your help in advance.

The $500/mo fee is for access to the system.  You also have to purchase downloads in advance.  5,000 "free" downloads are included with your first yearly subscription.  250 "free" downloads are included with each monthly subscription you buy.  Once you've used all your "free" downloads you must purchase more downloads at .30 per folio download and you must buy them in lots of at least 10,000 at a time.  The professional level also includes access to "Gold" tech support which is far more helpful than the sales people.

  • How do I convert MP4 file to AVI or MOV using MacBook Pro (2010)

I am 10.6.4 new user on a new MacBook Pro. This is my first Mac computer.
I want to convert a MP4 video file to AVI or MOV file type. How would I do this on my new Mac? Documentation says I have Quicktime X, but I cannot find Quicktime X on my system. When I try to load Quicktime 7 Pro, my system says I have Quicktime X and cannot load Pro. Apple websites say Pro version will allow me to convert the MP4 files. Anyone have any experience or ideas on what I should do? How do I find Quicktime X? Will it do the conversion for me? Thanks

Use MPEG Streamclip, or open the QuickTime Player from the /Applications/Utilities/ folder, installing this software if needed.

  • Propper Compressions: from Final Cut Pro to DVD Studio Pro?

Ok, so i have a project on Final Cut Pro, what are the right compressions that i would need to do to get my project to DVD Studio Pro?

First take a long look at the manual and the tutorial.
Then elect the preset in Compressor that fit to the total length of your movie. Less than 90 minutes = 90 minute preset for video. Whatever yours is.
Then encode audio in compressor to Dolby 2.
Best to do the DVD SP tutorial. Your question is basic.
    good luck

  • Can't import .avi files and I have Pro

Ok... I bought Quicktime Pro about 3 years ago and after they updated to the next version, it wouldn't import my FlaskOut.avi from the program FlaskMPEG. It states something like "Quicktime doesn't have the software to view this file. Unfortunatly, it's not on the Quicktime website." I never had a problem with this until I upgraded to the next version. I re-installed the old version and put in the Key but that version doesn't work anymore either. I need to import these to place trailers on my website. Do I need to buy Quicktime Pro again? And if I do will I be able to import these files then? If it won't work, do you know I program I could use? Thanks guys.

    You need to install Perian.

  • Generate AVI files. Convert in AVI from MOV. QUICKTIME PRO??

    Hi,
First of all, I'd like to ask you an apology if my problem has been solved in another post, but I couldn't find it.
I have an AVI file and I’d like to add the subs (srt file) My idea was to open the AVI file with a program, to add the file and finally to generate a new AVI file with the subs included.
I had the wrong idea that with Quicktime I could make that, but after several intentions I have realized that I haven’t the Quicktime Pro, what I have is Quicktime X and with this version is not possible to generate an AVI file the way I need.
I have read a few posts about the differences between Quicktime 7 Pro and Quicktime X, and before thinking in buy the Quicktime 7 Pro license, I want to know if it will make what I want.
I also need to convert a MOV file into an AVI file or another smaller which I could share by email. I prefer AVI format because all users (MAC & WINDOWS) can play it.
I am not sure if the Quicktime 7 Pro is the better solution for me. Maybe you know another program which I can get what I need.
Thank you in advance, best regards.
    FJT

If you are also running the 3ivX codec module and the movie is a DivX AVI, then you you may need to run the file through 3ivX's DivX Doctor II. This utility updates DivX .avi videos to 3ivX QT (.mov) videos. (This assumes other files still play correctly with audio.)
    http://www.3ivx.com/divxdoctor/
"After the conversion you will be able to play the video smoothly, and the audio glitches inherent in the AVI format will be fixed" -- according to the 3ivX site.

  • File Compression Questions/Help Needed

Question, I have just completed an audio presentation project (audio book on CD) for a client (681 mgs) which I now need to have replicated 1500 times over. The problem is my outsourced replicator will only press cd's up to 650 mgs. Therefore, I need to figure out how to compress the presentation just slightly (as to not lose tone quality) to get in onto the disc. (The CD Rom will be played in the car or computer Cd players)
I used the Soundtrack 1.2 to complete the project and also have Quicktime pro, however, I'm not sure what to do and how to change the settings to get the compression correct.
    Thanks

Is it something you can simply save as an .aif file, then import it into iTunes and then compress it to mp3 at, say, 256 Kbps? That's pretty good... but if you're looking for better... perhaps an mp2? Not easy to find an mpeg1 layer 2 compression utility, but I use Sound Converter:

    It's a start...
