Avi compression

Hello.
I have a problem converting a file to AVI. It is a 4min. video (DV PAL) that needs to be compressed to an under 10mb AVI for e-mail difussion. These people all have PCs, and MPEG4 videos are not compatible. They can only play AVIs, but, of course, it can only be an under 10mb compression. I have tried everything and I have ran out of ideas for now. Does anyone have an idea of what I can do?
thanks!

Yeah, get them to download the free QT player for Windows. Then export a QT using Sorenson 3....
Or if they won't do that, you'll need to buy some compression software... like Squeeze, or Episode from Telestream so you can create WMF files (which windows media player will play). The AVI export from FCP won't compress it down enough for emailing...

  • Best AVI compression settings

    Hi everybody.
I need to prepare avi files for a video catalogue, and I've compressed them using DV PAL.
Yet I'm not satisfied with the result. I tried the 'no compression' option and, though the video quality is good, the resulting file is way too "huge" to fit in a cd.
Thank u in advance for any suggestion

    Why CD? Why not DVD?
DVD will allow you play mpeg2 files on a set-up player or from most computer DVD players.
CDs can't be played, the files have to be moved to the hard drive first. Even Video CDs (VCD) is a BAD way to go.
    Cheers

  • Do AVI Compression Filters require a Microsoft Digital Signature in LV

    Hello all,
My company has written a custom video codec. I installed the custom codec onto my machine. When I did I was warned that this codec did not have "Microsoft Digital Signature". I said "ok" and installed it anyway. The codec appeared in my Hardware codec properties tab. I figured all was good. I was wrong.
When I run the VI "IMAQ AVI get filter names" it does not appear in the returned list. I assumed the reason for this to be because the VI only returns Microsoft approved codecs. Am I right? I also tried using the codec by using a string constant and placing its name exactly how it appears in the HArdware properties tab into the "IMAQ AVI create" VI. This did not work either.
Am I right by assuming that I cannot run non-microsoft approved codecs in IMAQ LV?  Is there a way around this? Any feedback???
    Foiled by MS,
    Glen D.

    Hey Glen D.,
The Get Filter Names VI returns only the filters that are able to work the NI's AVI functions. What the VI does is it gets the list of filters from DirectShow and then it tests each one with a sample frame to see if it can compress the image or not. Then the function returns a list of the codecs that work. This does not necessarily mean that the function works only with Microsoft approved codecs. So if your custom codec can somehow align with the DirectShow architecture, then your codec should be detected by the IMAQ AVI functions.
I hope this answers your question. Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns. Thanks, and have a great day.
    Regards,
    DJ L.

  • DV to AVI compression

    Hello all.
This is a little specific (and PC related), so if nobody knows exactly, i won't be offended.
I am capturing 15 minutes of footage from a DVCam into Final Cut and converting it into AVI with Compressor. The quality is to be the best possible. I exported it uncompressed, and the file took up 30 gigs! I am now trying to export it using Cinepak (best quality), and it will take about 8 hours to finish. The only problem is that i am on a deadline and can only use these hours efficiently. Does anyone have any idea if there is a standard for Cinepak compressed AVI at the best quality level? All i care about really is that it fits on a DVD.
    Anyone???
    Thanks.

Why not just give the client the source file? From FCP, choose File -> Export -> QuickTime Movie. Check "self-contained" and hit Save.
Just make sure you add the .mov suffix, and the Windows PC should be able to open the file easily, as long as it has QuickTime installed.

  • Avi. compression - do i need pro?

I searched this board and couldn't find my answer. I'm just beginning on an Apple (and I love it) and even newer to the world of video.
I have some .avi files that I want to put into iDVD, but the files are so big that I can barely put anything on it. I have Quicktime 7, but do I need Pro to do this? I don't need the video to be the best quality (because it wasn't recorded at the highest quality).
Any help would be great for this newbie.
    Thanks

Your other "i" Apps will convert nearly any file that the QuickTime Player can view. Some formats (muxed) will not convert with the audio track.
Do a short test before committing a lot of work into an iMovie project. You'll know in a few minutes if the file will work.
Basic answer. If QuickTime can "play" the file, the other apps can convert it without the need for the QuickTime Pro upgrade. If it doesn't play in QuickTime you'll need other, third party, software to convert the file to QT formats.

  • FCP 5 export to .AVI for Windows client? Advice needed!

I have a Windows platform client that wants my Exported FCP 5 Sequence in .AVI format.
Obviously, I normally always use Export to Quicktime Movie in FCP, and I do know that their is not a direct choice in FCP to export/convert as an .AVI file. (I usually hand off the FCP file to another facility that does DVD Studio Pro authoring work, and haven't had a need to make different file formats).
This has made me to ponder of few bits of info, that I'm sure I could get great ansers to, here.
My normal "workaround" for making an .AVI for a Windows user is to Export as Quicktime Movie in FCP, like normal, and then open that exported file in Quicktime Pro, and use Export Movie to AVI in Quicktime Pro. Is this the best method? Secondly, I am a little unsure as to the best settings I should use in QT Pro to achieve this. For example:
I just did a routine NTSC 48k,16 bit stereo, 30 second ad in FCP, and my normal, Export to Quicktime Movie was about 260 meg in size for the finished, self-contained movie file.
I opened this in QT-Pro and ran Export to AVI. In the settings dialog, I chose "uncompressed" for video and 48k-16 bit stereo for audio. The resulting export was about 680 meg in size! Because of file size restrictions for the clients product, what settings change or choice should I be making in QT-Pro to get an "equivalent" of the 260 meg file the FCP is exporting? Should I not get an equal file size of the QT-Pro AVI versus the FCP export (both 260 meg?).
If the answer is compression, what is the best settings in QT-Pro? Cinepak? Intel Indeo?
Perhaps, I have always misunderstood what FCP Export to Movie is giving me, but I thought that was uncompressed video? If so, why do I get the 260 meg out of FCP, and then 680 meg from QT-Pro Export to AVI (uncompressed) for the same 30 second clip? Is it simply a data rate difference?
Lastly, I have actually had a Windows user take a FCP Export to Movie file, straight from me, and they say it opened fine in Windows Media Player as is for viewing. However, there is no (dot) file extension name on the end of the filename. They can simply click File/Open in Windows Media Player and choose the "unrecognized" file because of no extension, and play it just fine to at least view the clip.
So what exactly is the file type that FCP is creating? It's not a .MOV and not an AVI file. What would be the equivalent file type association (just for my curiosity).
Thanks for any help to the above as I value the more-experienced users here.
    Wade

    Hi Wade,
Sorry for letting your post unanswered for two days, we were all busy (I know, it is not an excuse).
Seriously, I think the reason you are not getting answers is you have asked too many questions in one post. Don't know about others, but I get slightly confused.
Let me tell you what I do with FCP material when I send it to our sound department where they work with Nuendo on PCs. I export sequence using QT Conversion. My settings are: Format - AVI, Compression type - DV-PAL, Compressor quality - Best. I do not bother much about the sound. I sent the resulting file over network to a Maxtor FireWire external drive connected to a colleague's PC and then take the drive down to the sound guys. If the AVI file is smaller than 2 GB I can burn it to a DVD and a PC can open it, if it is larger, PCs cannot open. Also, the sound guys ask me not to use Cinepac, they do not like it. Therefore, I use DV-PAL; I guess you may safely use DV-NTSC but it depends on who will open the AVI file. Ask your client what it wants.
I think my routine is a bit more streamlined than yours - I export straight from FCP and do not bother with QT. You are wrong in saying that there is no direct way in FCP to export AVI.
Hope this is a starter for more answers. Also, have you tried searching the forum? I am sure all the answers are already there.

  • Other alternatives to JMF to open AVI files

The codecs I use for compressing AVI files are not supported by JMF. There me another simpler option like using an external player as all I need to be able to do is to open the avi file in the player and then makes calls to tell it to go to certain frames.
This is to enable me to sync up elevation data stored as distance/time with the associated avi file.
Anyone have any ideas as I have run out of them ?

    juckky wrote:

..as all I need to be able to do is to open the avi file in the player and then makes calls to tell it to go to certain frames.Nope. The Desktop method does not support that.
    1) Write a codec for the AVI compression (and use it in JMF).
    2) JavaFX maybe? Look into it and report back.

AVI is a legacy file container originated by Microsoft back in 1992 and which has not been officially supported for more than a decade. Like the container, many of the codecs commonly used to create AVI content are also "legacy" compression formats most often supported on PC/Windows platforms. In fact, some codecs have never been transcoded for Mac use. Of those that have, many never made the transition to Mac OS X or the transition to Intel-based platforms. Those codecs that are still supported on the Mac can normally be found in the avi to quicktime converter available as an online download. While some common AVI compression formats may be supported by the QT X Player app, QT 7 currently provides a more compatible AVI playback environment for most "legacy" compression formats. If the codec(s) used in your AVI files are not supported by the avi to quicktime converter for QT use, you can try the VLC media player which may still support more esoteric compression formats. If  VLC does not support the files, the normal approach is to discover which specific audio and/or video codecs were used to create the file and perform an Internet search to see if a compatible Mac component is available for download.

  • AVI files wont encode

I'm working on a project that requires me to capture video from 3/4 inch analogue tape. Some of the project was shot on DV format and was in raw form. Here's my work flow.
I'm taking my 3/4" analogue tape and loop it through a dv deck (to make it digital) and into my apple G5 by firewire from the dv deck. I edit my piece out and and export it out as an AVI file. I adjust the AVI compression video setting to "none" and export it out to a server.
From this server our IT dept. takes it and encodes to the file type they want along with the settings for streaming. BUT some of the files they cannot encode.
It seems that the pieces that were edited from the raw DV tape were able to be encoded...and only SOME of the 3/4" pieces were able to be formated. Others give an error.
I'll post the error message here:
    \videos\ProfessionalTechnicalEd\HumanSvcs\MarieR\New\Terminology
Error: 0xC00D1B83 - One or more codecs required to open this content could not be found.
    C:\Program Files\Windows Media Components\Encoder>Pause
Press any key to continue . . .
Has anyone had this same issue and does anyone have a solution for getting these encoded from an AVI file.

I often need to make files in FCP that Windows Media Encoder can read for transcoding to WM#. My workflow from a dv sequence is:
    1) "Export Using Quicktime Conversion"
    2) Format: "AVI"
    3) "Options..."
    4) "Settings..."
    5) Compression type: "DV/DVC PRO - NTSC"
    6) Motion
    a) Frames per second either 29.97 or "Best"
    b) no "Key frame every" set (dv has no keyframes)
    c) no "Limit data rate to" set (dv has its inherent own data rate)
    7) Compressor
    a) Quality "Best"
    b) Scan Mode "Interlaced" (windows media encoder has its own de-interlacer)
    c) Aspect Ratio "4:3" (I let windows media encoder do the aspect ratio correction depending on the final use)
This work flow just repackages the dv file in fcp into a dv encoded AVI with no re-compression.
The "uncompressed" option you describe basically gets you no advantage, its just a huge file.
There also could be problems with the audio that is causing windows media encoder to choke.
As an aside windows media encoder does its own "color correction" so you need to color correct your original fcp sequence to a full range sequence otherwise windows media encoder will make it really flat.

  • Where is IMAQ AVI Get Filter Names VI?

I have LabVIEW 6.1 with NI IMAQ 2.6 and NI Vision 6.0.5. I'm trying to create a compressed AVI file from a camera source, and the help file states that there's something called the IMAQ AVI Get Filter Names VI that will return the filters I can use for AVI compression. This VI isn't there in my installation, though.
Am I doing something wrong, or do I need to download something else?

Try looking in the folder C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 6.1\examples\Vision\2. Functions\AVI for the AVI Compressor Comparison.llb example program. This uses the AVI Get Filter Names VI. If this is not available, then you need to upgrade to Vision 7.0 in order to get the functionality to read AVIs into LabVIEW.
    Hope this helps-

  • Need uncompressed AVI recipe

I am using FCP5, Compressor and Flip4Mac Studio HD.
I take a 15 minute 8bit YUV QT into Compressor, Quicktime Conversion or directly to QT Pro and set output for AVI, compression - none.
The AVI file is 3 times as big as the uncompressed 4:2:2 QT.
And the first scene of the AVI video covers the entire QT timeline. I can't play more than a minute of the program in Flip4Mac enhanced QT player.
When I take the AVI to Winoz, WMP says the file is corrupt, won't show or play.
Lots of posts talk about exporting uncompressed AVI files. How?
    G5 Dual 2.0, 5.5GB RAM, 2TB RAID   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   FCP5 Suite, Kona, Boris, blah, blah ...

Did you choose "Maximum Bit Depth" in the Export Settings dialog? This option supports up to 32 bpc, if the selected compression supports it.

  • HT1536 .AVI codecs that support retina display.

    Is there one that works?

All was fine until the organiztion's PC went south (10years old). I am covering with my personal equipment until a replacement can be approved and aquired. As fate would have it I just recently replaced my dying MacBook Air with a !3' Retina MacBookPro.
Thanks for the apmplifying info. This is a "horse of a different color." Had thought you were referring to the "Retina" iPad. Platform display type should not make a difference, Mac OS X version, QT player version, and compression format(s) used in the AVI container make all the difference in the world here.
Basic question is whether or not you have installed Perian and the QT 7 player app on the new system. Perian plus the QT 7 player basically support most AVI compression formats currently compatible with Mac OS X operating systems. Remember AVI is a legacy file format that has not been supported by Microdoft for more than 11 years. Some PC codecs have never been transcoded for OS X or Mac Intel platform use, some AVI files simply cannot be played by the QT players.
I have been unable to get .avi video to play on the MacBook using QuickTime Player and Flip4Mac. Neither currently supports .AVI for Retina is my understanding. I am looking for a temporary solution to just time play .AVI files once and done.
The real question is "what compression formats are you trying to play?" and "in which QT player on your new system?" If both QT 7 and Perian are installed and if the QT X player cannot play the AVI file natively, it will normally ask the user if he or she wants to play the file in the QT 7 player. To further complicate matters, since the introduction of Lion, Apple has, by default, turned off legacy codecs used by the embedded QT structure which were normally used natively for AVI export.
If playback is all you are interested in, then VLC can be used for this purpose since it includes its own codec resources within the app. The QT 7 player plus the Perian codec package provides similar playback capabilities. On the other hand, if you want to play and/or convert common AVI codec content to QT compatible files without purchasing a commercial conversion app, then you can use Perian (for decoding) and either QT 7 Pro ($29 USD) or the free MPEG Streamclip app (for encoding to any available export codec for which your system is configured).

QT is designed primarily for the simultaneous playback of multiple tracks or movies. The player app does not contain any internal "playlist" capabilities as such.
how do i simply play 3 or 4 avi files in succession, not all at once ?
Simplicity is in the eye of the beholder. There are several ways to do this. You could, for instance,
    1) If the AVI compression formats are compatible with iTunes/your QT component configuration, you could place the audio and video data in an MOV file container, add them to iTunes, and place them in an playlist for playback.
    2) You could create an Automator app which would play multiple AVI files or folders/subfolders of AVI files (in MOV containers) dropped on the app in a sequential manner.
    3) You could create a "reference" movie (i.e., a pseudo "playlist) whose pointers point the the AVI files you want played in the order desired.
    4) Use an alternative third-party player which includes an internal playlist.
And then perhaps repreat the sequence.
Easy, simply save the "Reference" movie mentioned above with the "Loop" option set.
In short there are many ways to do what you want. However, only you can decide which is the simplest for your purpose.

  • IMovie 08 won't recognize avi format. How do I convert my files?

I just installed the new iLife up-grade to my iMac. The iMovie will not recognize all my avi movies (the old iMovie did). Is there a safe converter that I can use? Is there an easier way? What's a mother to do?

I just installed the new iLife up-grade to my iMac. The iMovie will not recognize all my avi movies (the old iMovie did).
More likely, iMovie '08 recognized the AVI compression formats and cannot edit the audio and/or video so it won't let you import it. Remember, iMovie '08 will only import files that it can edit. iMovie '06 only edited DV compressed files and so it automatically converted your AVI files to DV as they were being imported. For example, many Casio cameras use Motion-JPEG/DVI ADPCM compression in the AVI file container. iMovie '08 is quite happy to import/edit you Motion-JPEG video track but doesn't like the DVI ADPCM audio. Kodak owners have a similar problem with Kodak's use of MPEG4/µ-Law compression combination in an MOV file container. (Once again the video is fine but iMovie doesn't like the µ-Lay audio preferring a more standard AAC (MPEG-4 audio) format to go along with the MPEG-4 video.
Is there a safe converter that I can use?
Since these files are already conversion but edit compatible with your system, you have quite a number of options. You could, for instance, drop/import them to iMovie '06 and they will be converted to DV clips which can be edited in either iMovie '06 or '08. If in iTunes, they can be converted to H.264/AAC using iTunes. If you have QT Pro, you can use that to convert them to any number of edit compatible file formats. In fact, you can even use GarageBand to export the files to an edit compatible format. Then, of course, you can always download any of the free, donationware, shareware, or payware converters available on the internet and frequently recommended here.
    Is there an easier way?
You can always continue to edit in iMovie '06.
    What's a mother to do?
    Sorry, that's not my department.
