.avi file converted to MPEG4 but problem

Yes I was able to add a .mov ext to it but the video is not showing up. It was created on a PC using Tony Hawk helmet cam. I would like to use these clips to make low quality video of my bike rides etc.
As I said, I get audio but the Quicktime video pane is blank (white screen). Are there any tricks to converting it to any Quicktime format that would make the video appear? I can tell it has large amounts of data as it should (28mb) for a 4 minute video. When I initially uploaded it from the network, I proceeded to open it and Quicktime pro notified me that I needed a plugin and directed me to the plugins and update page you find in the Quicktime preferences pane when you click the update tab. Any help would be great!

I finally rec'd QuickTime for the web and it's accompanying CD. I installed it in OS 9, restarted, and had the option of converting the .avi to multiple different formats including .mp4 and .mov. After registering it and activating it I converted the file to .mov then transferred it to my eMac and imported it to iMovie where I was able to adjust the sound track to be in sync with the video track.
Thank you so much for all your interest QTK and especially Dick. You guys pointed me in the right direction and really trouble shot this problem. It was not a cheap fix and I sorta wish this stuff just worked but I will read the book and derive as much as I can from it to utilise in QT and iMovie.
I forgot to mention that QT Pro 6 was a casualty of a crashed HD two summers ago. I had no record of the key. Apple recognized that I legitimately had a right to it but was unable to provide it because it had been phased out by the time I went to reinstall it. They provided at no charge a key for QT Pro 7 instead.
Thanks again,
Martin J. Estrada

Since you are able to open it you can probably
find the file format and comporession (codec) by
using MovieInfo in the Window menu of the Quicktime
Player. Some folks report that this menu item does
not work for them with all codeds. If that is the
case you could open Movie Properties if you have QT
Pro, select the video track and then check Format in
    the submenu.
I'm anxious to try this in Quicktime pro tonight when I get home. I hadn't even thought to check Movie info or Movie properties.
ALso, if it is an avi you could try the Divx codec
listed on the component page that Apple directed you
    to.
When I was directed to the component page, the DiVX player was the logical choice for trying this. I downloaded it and gave it a shot with only the identical results, no picture, just sound.
If none of this works you could try ffmpegX to see if
it will read and/or convert to a suitable format.
Also, take a look this freeware: VLC, which may be able to read
    and convert the file.
I searched here yesterday for information before I had even transfered it to my eMac and read somewhere about VLC and ffmpegx. I already have VLC on my iMac and gave it a shot with the same results. I don't believe I have the current version of VLC though, so I'll update it tonight and try it again. If perhaps this is the fix, will it now be possible to convert it for the purpose of exporting to iMovie and how, or will I still need to hunt the plugin or codec?
ffmpegx is a component of HandBrake is it not.
Incidentally, the software that came with the TH helmet cam is designed for the PC platform only and can convert the captured video footage to .avi or .wmv only. I'm wondering if there is a utility or application out there that makes these devices recognised when connected to a Macintosh.
Additionally, I forgot to mention that I tried conversion through MPEG Streamclip (?did I say that right?), also sound only. I've had success using this to convert MPEG4 and H264 to .mov files for import to iMovie and thought it might help.
Anyway, I really appreciate your consideration and view at my post. I look forward to letting you know I've found a solution because I see a lot of posts similar to mine (but pertaining to iPod transfer) with no resolution so to speak.
    Thanks,
    me

Hello! I used QuickTime for watch any videos on OS X Mountain Lion, but now, I'm passed to OS X Mavericks and QuickTime, when I open an .avi file, convert this in a .mov file. I'm sorry for my English, I'm French and I don't know speak English very well, but what can I do for QuickTime opens on .avi and doesn't convert to .mov?

    HI GalaxieMusique,
I'm french too, but I'm going to write this post in english so that everyone may understand it
I have the same problem in Mavericks, but I'd say, more important, with QuickLook.
Indeed Quicklook can't read avi movies anymore. Actually it always been the case, but with Perian we were able to fix it. The problem is that Perian is no longer available for Mac OS 10.9....
I'd assume that our only hope is Apple themselves... It would be nice from Apple to creat an add-on for quicklook to be able to preview the avi movies.
In regards with quicktime, you can download QuickTime 7 here:
    http://www.01net.com/telecharger/windows/Multimedia/lecteurs_video_dvd/fiches/10 0.html
and ask all the .avi movies to be played by QuickTime 7 and not QuickTime X (included into Mac OS).
Sorry for the english, we french people can make mistakes sometimes
If anyone has a solution for QuickLook, please do not hesitate. This topic is becoming a real mess....

  • QuickTime unsyncs sound last minutes on AVI files converted to AppleTV

Hi! I'm sitting up in Sweden with a problem I hope someone has answer to. I realize I'm not the only one in Sweden with this from other discussions groups.
I convert AVI files with QuickTime pro. for my AppleTV. When Playing, at the end of the files / film (5-8 minutes) Sound doesn't sync with image, which is veeeery annoying of course.
I hoped this would go away with Leopard but no no.
I've got an 2 GHz Intel Core Duo with 2 GB mem. Quick Time is up to date as well.
Any clues for us northen Mac fanatics?

  • .AVI file has white screen but does have sound...

I have an .AVI file someone sent me which by using QT Pro shows just a white screen but does have audio.
I have Perian installed and it didn't help with the white screen. I have opened it fine in VLC player, and a couple of other media players but my issue is that I want to import the AVI file into iMovie so I can make it into a DVD. However, if I import it into iMovie, it will be the same white screen with audio.
I have searched the web far and wide to find a solution and most are saying it could be only viewable in QT on a PC of all things.
Is there any components out there which will help me with this problem? Any other suggestions?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    RB

But when I selected the problematic AVI file it too appeared with a white screen w/sound in MPEG Streamclip. So I realized it wouldn't help me either.
A white screen usually means the selected video codec is not compatible with the actual file. Normally, I would run a conflict test. Based on your previous posts regarding the compression formats in use and the video codec attempting to perform video playback, my first guess would be that the Perian component is trying to decode a DivX (possibly v5) file. I would probably either temporarily remove the Perian component and see if the AVI file plays or remove and then replace the DivX component (if the latest one is already installed) and see if this changes the component access order so DivX is called for video playback. If you have an older DivX component installed, there may be a conflict issue. (Remember to close QT while removing/replacing components so the list will be re-initialized before making a playback test.) If all else fails, try posting a sample file so we can see if the problem can be duplicated on other systems/configurations.

  • Converting Large AVI files for iMovie

I had an old 16mm film transferred into AVI files (HD, very high quality).  The main file is too large to edit (200G), and even play on my machine.  I had them converted by the same company that did the transfer, but there is so much loss of quality, they are only good for a small digital video.  Goal is to produce this on DVD (from iMovie) for later distribution.
So my question is this--what file format should I get these AVI files converted to, so the end output is maximum quality for DVD?  IAny help and advice appreciated!

Hi, thank you for your response!  I don't have access to a MAC right now, so will need to check later (the EHD the large files are on is formatted for MACs), but I'm sure it's uncompressed.
Even editing with a RAID, don't I eventually have to compress to fit onto a typical DVD?  So if I compressed or converted now, could I edit without a RAID?  If so, I'm just wondering what best to convert to, for maximum quality on the finished DVD product later on.

  • Problem with .AVI file

The AVI file itself looks OK but when I bring it into FCP to do a little clean up work all fast movement is resulting in some terrible jagged edge/saw tooth effects. These are not present in the AVI file so I'm confused as to why they are appearing when placed in a FCP sequence? I have tried a de-interlace filter but the problem is still there. I need to get this onto DVD without the distortion.
    AVI properties:
    DivX 5.0, 704 x 528
    MPEG Layer 3, 25 FPS
    Here's an example frame:

This is probably just what FCP is displaying on your computer screen, not what it will look like when you're all done outputting to video. The problem is that your Canvas is not a full-size representation (pixel to pixel) of your video file and interlacing can cause this exact appearance. It's a moiré artifact more than a problem with interlacing. What does this look liek if you pipe it out to a video monitor? What happens if you blow up the Canvas to 400%?
You want to change the interlacing, not deinterlace.

  • Playing AVI files on E71

I have some video clips that I took on a Nikon camera.  But I am unable to view these on my Nokia E71.  Searched a lot on the web for answers, a lot of pointers were for DIVX mobile player and Handbrake.  I tried both and can confirm that the AVI files converted by these does not work on the e71.  Anyone else lucky enough ?

Hi blufreak, is it that simple? I own both E90 & E71, but only video files film with E71 can play on E90 not viceversa.
Other brands of handsets recorded video files can play on both Nokia but between phone can't.

  • .AVI file format question

Upgrading from CS2 to Photoshop CS5
I found out after the fact that in order to edit video you need CS5 Extended.
So, I then went and returned regular and upgraded to Photoshop CS5 extended.
(See my other thread for details, but installing the 12.01 patch is not an option at this time.)
Try to use file open to open a .AVI file from one of my cameras and get a message of "unrecognized file format".
Was able to import the 7 second video into layers.
Checked support issues, and installed Quicktime 7.6.8
Also, due to 12.01 issues, reinstalled Photoshop CS5 Extended AFTER upgraded Quicktime to 7.6.8
Machine specs:  Toshiba Satellite P30  Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.60 GHZ (Hyperthreading Dual Core) 2GB RAM ATI Mobility Radeon X600 Win XP Professional SP3 About 12 GB disk space available at install time.
Note that Quicktime will open the .AVI file in question with no problems, as well as Roxio software (trying to get rid of that with CS5)

I talked to support via phone and it appears the the problem is in installation.  The install of CS5 extended did not take over the regular install.  So, I need to start by completely uninstalling AGAIN and installed extended from scratch AGAIN.
I did try the program mention GSPOT as well.  It says AVI codecs are installed on the machine inquestion.  I will get more informaiton tonight afte rI do the re-install and see what happens.

  • How to divide a large avi file

Hope that this is the appropriate forum for this. I have a large .avi movie file which will not fit onto a single DVD-R disc (4.7GB) when I try to use Toast for burning. Is there any simple way of dividing the file into two parts so that each part will fit onto it's own DVD disc?

You are absolutely correct. S & C does split the file into parts (I chose 2 of 350MB each for the avi file of 837.8MB) but adds an extra extension of the type .00a, .00b after the .avi extension. Then, with this weird extension, it is not recognized as a movie file. I did remove the extra extensions so that each part ended only with .avi (and had to make a change in the main name for each part so that they had different names) but curiously only the first part played perfectly as a movie but the second part did not - an error message appeared "not a movie file". Here I thought that dividing/splitting a file would be a simple thing to do but once again I'm foiled. I may just go out and purchase the newly released Western Digital HD Media Player which connects to a TV and takes its input from the computer via a USB storage drive. This way I transfer the avi file to a jump/flash/thumb drive from my computer and plug the drive into the WD Media Player which then displays the movie on TV. No discs/burning/file splitting, etc. to contend with. The reviews for the device are quite positive and it works for both PC and Mac. It is relatively inexpensive as well ($100-150).
