AVI file import only the audio track

Hi
When I want to import AVI file from a camcorder, I only get the audio file and not the video. I can view those avi file with VCL which mean (?) I have the necessary codec on the machine. So, know someone what do I do wrong?
Claude

Claude,
I can view those avi file with VCL which mean (?) I have the necessary codec on the machine.
While VLC Player is very good, there is one aspect of it, that can give one a false "sense of security" - VLC Player contains many CODEC's, that are not installed on the system. The same is true for MediaPlayer Classic HC - it also contains many CODEC's, that are not installed on the system.
Usually, an AVCHD (H.264 CODEC) file will have an MTS, or perhaps MP4 format. Wrapping such a file in AVI is not standard.
If you look at the file in MediaInfo (Tree View), the exact CODEC should be determined, and listed.
If it IS H.264, then my next question would be whether you have the latest version of Apple's QT Player installed, as that should also install the Apple version of H.264.
If you have an MJPEG CODEC file, wrapped in the AVI wrapper (much more common), then you will likely need to install an MJPEG CODEC. Here, it can get a bit tricky. Two suppliers of "generic" MJPEG CODEC's, MainConcept and Morgan, will usually work just fine. However, more and more camera mfgrs. are heavily tweaking the MJPEG CODEC, to suit their purposes. In those cases, the MainConcept, or Morgan, might not work 100%. In those cases, I recommend that one install the exact MJPEG CODEC, that came with the camera, whether Nikon, Canon, Panasonic, Olympus, or other. The exact MJPEG version will most likely be on the utility disc, that came with the camera, but it might install as a separate entity (not as common, as it should be), it might be installed with the camera's driver (a bit more common, but no where near universal), or it might be installed along with either an editing, or cataloging program, on that disc (most common, and not that intuitive). For instance, I have 5 MJPEG CODEC's on my laptop - one from Morgan, MainConcept, Canon, Nikon and Panasonic, as I have cameras from those companies.
Again, MediaInfo will tell you what the CODEC is, inside the AVI wrapper.
Good luck,
Hunt

  • Can you import only the audio?

In the latest version of FCPX, is there a way to import only the audio and not the video (I'm dealing with AVCHD files, if that matters)?

No. But, once you get the media into your event browser there is an easy way to bring just the audio to your timeline.

  • Premiere pro 2.0: where is the audio track?

    Hello,
I just uninstalled Premiere Pro CS4, because my processor was too bad for it, and installed the testversion of Premiere Pro 2.0.
This seemed to work fine, but when I imported a normal .avi file (it was a mpg converted to avi), I noticed that the audio track was completely missing What could I have done wrong? (This is the problem with every avi-file I import, the sound works on wmp and i should have the right codecs for it, too, I have the k-lite codec pack. The audio track is simply not visible, you wouldn't guess that there is one, if you didn't know it).
    Please help me
    Blubbel1491

I agree completely with John T. That was why I specifically asked about DivX/Xvid. It is a delivery-only format for streaming Video, and is good for that purpose. It is NOT meant to be edited, and is very highly compressed. Conversion will get you what you need and let you edit, but the quality hit has taken place, and you can never recover that.
When you convert, you want DV-AVI Type II w/ 48KHz 16-bit PCM/WAV Audio. Do not choose anything else for SD footage.
As for the CFA and PEK files, this is part of Importing an AV file w/ Audio into PrPro. It seldom takes very long to complete, if one is working with DV-AVI Type II files to begin with. Other formats/CODEC's, like WMV's, can take much longer. What often happens is that one Imports the Assets, and they never see the little progress bar, and start editing. Many workstations can do this OK, so long as a Conforming Asset is not used, before it's ready, but often trying to edit, while the process is ongoing, will result in a crash, or a partially Conformed Audio file. That is why I mentioned that aspect first.
Then I kept focusing on your description "AVI." For me, that means DV-AVI Type II, but I realized that it was just as likely that you had chosen another CODEC, in an AVI "wrapper."
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS - if you have the original footage, I would just convert that to DV-AVI Type II, and leave the Xvid/DivX for streaming delivery ONLY. If you convert your DivX, you will loose a bit more quality, and since DivX has sucked the quality out already, you do not want to do that.

  • MXF file plays with audio on Source Monitor but timeline imports only the video

    Hello,
This started happening like a few hours ago. But it was working perfectly before! This is driving me insane!
This is the situation (Premiere CC, updated to latest version):
    - I have a bunch of MXF files and if I play them on the Source Monitor, audio and video play perfectly.
    - The moment I drag the MXF file onto the timeline, only the video is imported, not the audio.
    - I tried to drag only the audio, using the different ways that Premiere provides but it won't come at all.
I managed to import audio and video doing the following: close all sequences, and drag the MXF file in the timeline with no sequence opened thus it will create a sequence with the imported audio and video from the MXF file.
BUT if I try to drop the SAME MXF file in this brand new sequence, only the video will come again.
Does anyone have an idea of what is going on? And why it suddenly stopped working?
    Thank you!

I am trying to import standard midi file that I created in Band in a Box into Logic Pro 9.  I can not get all the track to play with internal instrument sounds... only the piano track.  how can I get the others to play... drums, bass etc????   Help

Don't drag the midi into an open Logic project. The tracks won't set up correctly.
'Open' the midi file with Logic as if it were a Logic project. Then all the tracks will be set up so you can start editing them and applying better saved sounds and instruments, but you'll be at a starting place where you can hear what's going on.

  • When I import my files only the audio plays back not the video. If I export the sequence its there?

When I import my files only the audio plays back not the video. If I export the sequence its there?
I am new to Premiere having just downloaded the 30 day trial yesterday, I jumped straight in and imported all of my files from my video camera however in Premiere only the audio plays back with the displays just showing a black space.
Out of curiosity I dragged three or four shots into the sequence editor and then exported them and played this through VLC and the video was there?
As I said I am completely new to Premiere having only spent around 3 or 4 hours with it in the past, I read a few forum threads around similar issues but couldn't find any solutions and as I am trying to edit together a short film for a college project due in soon I need to try and find a way to fix this A.S.A.P
Any help would be appreciated and if theres any more info I can provide please let me know.
    Thanks

  • Import DV AVI Files with 5.1 Audio

To my surprise, Encore would not import DV AVI files from Premiere with 5.1 Audio. I much prefer to do my transcoding in Encore rather than in Premiere so I don't have to guess how much disk space will remain after menus and other content. Also, I think Encore transcoding is more efficient than Premiere.
Yet, cheaper and less sophisticated applications such as Nerovision will import DV AVI files with 5.1 audio, and give you 5.1 DVD's.
Which leads to another question, why does a cheaper application just give you the Dolby Digital 5.1 Audio, while a fee has to be paid to Surcode to get it in the Adobe applications?

You cannot create a 5.1 Dolby Digital file in Encore, so the answer is an emphatic "YES" to the planning & budgeting.
You really should be doing this anyway, as it is a real eye opener. There are some superb Excel spreadsheet bit budgeting tools, as well as a simple enough manual method. It should be detailed in the FAQ.
As far as DTS goes, you'll need an encoder again. The only plugin version I am aware of is for Steinberg's Nuendo & Cubase systems, but both DTS and SurCode make them.
The SurCode DTS-DVD encoder is dated now - 5 years or so - and the Nuendo one sounds better. Having said that, the DTS-PSE sounds even better, as well as having DTS-ES and DTS 96/24 capability (both of which are DVD Legal).
Even better are the soon-to-be-released DTS-HD SAS & MAS encoders.
These are primarily for the Blue-ish type discs, but also cater for so-called "legacy" encoding as well, and the detail is even better than the DTS-PSE version. You can hear the difference in the detail where the top end sounds more natural & open. Whatever version you get will make Dobly Dirgital sound dull & muddy by comparison.
Quality can be improved by feeding the encoder with 24 bit audio too - this also applies to Dolby Digital.
Bitrates for DTS are either 754 kb/sec or 1509 kb/sec, and come in 2 flavours:
Compact (.cpt) and Padded (.dts) - either can use the lower bitrate, and there is no difference in audio quality between the CPT and DTS flavours. I recommend using the higher bitrate personally.
Both types are supported in Passthrough mode in Encore - that is to say they import, and multiplex correctly but cannot be previewed.
    Hope this helps.

  • Elements11 QUE: Why does only the audio-portion transfer to timeline when I drag a video file down.

    Elements11 - 1st time user
When I drag a known good video file from the "My Videos" Folder on my laptops disk down to the "Drag Here" box in my project Timeline, only the audio portion transfers NOT the video.
I am trying to create an "Instant Movie" after watching a youtube video on the subject.
The end goal is to combine portions of three video clips into one for my sons school project.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Elements11DRC
What version of Premiere Elements are you working with and on what computer operating system is it running?
Can we assume by your selected ID, that the program is Premiere Elements 11?
Pending further details, I will assume that you are working with Premiere Elements 11 on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit.
Where is this "My Videos" Folder - on a DVD disc being used as a DataDisc for video storage purposes?
If so, Add Media/DVD Camera or Computer Drive/Video Importer and from there automatically into the project in Project Assets as well as on the Timeline.
If your "My Videos" Folder is a folder on the computer hard drive, then Add Media/Files and Folders to get the video into Project Assets from where you drag the video to the Timeline.
Now for the video that you are trying to import...what are its properties
    Video Compression
    Audio Compression
    Frame Size
    Frame Rate
    Interlaced or Progressive
    File Extension
    Pixel Aspect Ratio
Probably answered the easiest by knowing the brand/model/settings of the camera that recorded the video.
Prime interest, that video compression. It could be MotionJPEG which can be problematic for Premiere Elements. It could be AVCHD.avi which cannot be imported.
We can go into greater detail on your project details once we rule in or out any of the factors mentioned above.
By the way, what is the destination for this project....burn to disc DVD or Blu-ray...export to file saved to the computer hard drive...other?
    More later.
    Thanks.

  • Where is the audio track in a dvdproj file?

I have a number of old iDVD projects stored on hard disc that I need to convert to a useable format.  I've been able to find the MPEG compressed video files by right-clicking on the .dvdproj bundle and opening the Contents/Resources/MPEG.nobackup folder, but the files have no audio track.  Where is the audio track stored?

Unless you've created an archive iDVD project file the audio is only linked to the project from wherever you kept the files when creating the project.

  • When I import my footage, the audio track disappears!

I have footage taken with my Canon vixia hfs11.  Footage looks great.  However, when I import the footage into Premeire Pro CS6, the audio track disappears.  I have used the Media Browser to import and import under file.  Nothing works.  The file is a MTS.  Please help!

As Karsten Schlüter, says MPEG Streamclip is a great way to make sure the video is as compatible as possible. You can also try downloading to multimedia helpers like DivX (in the case of some Xvid/Divx MP4 formats). I have a Flip mino video camera that requires DivX to be installed to play them back. And once I installed it the videos would be editable in iMovie '11. Something to try.

  • How can I extract only the audio as an aiff file?

Using a Sony DSC-N2 Cybershot Camera I recorded video that was saved as “MOV01606.MPG”. The video plays back with sound in Quicktime Pro and iTunes but how can I extract only the audio as an aiff file?

Use MPEG Streamclip (free) to convert your .mpg files to QuickTime formats.
QuickTime can't extract audio from muxed file formats.

correction needs to be made to step #14, I typed:
