AVI file shows just white screen with audio, help

I created a video on an old sony vaio, before i came to my senses and bought a mac. I have got the video off of the old laptop, but it won't play on quicktime now. I have tried some converters and what not, but it still won't play on my mac at all. does anyone know any ways that seem to work converting AVI files or anything? i really want to play this video.

Open the avi (even though it doesn't show video) and then use "Show MovieInfo" in the Windows menu of QT Player. That will tell you what codec was used in making the video. If it was an Indeo compressor you will not be able to view it in OS X unless you can run the Classic environment. Indeo codecs for Classic
If they are not Indeo videos you may be able to play them in OS X by iinstalling the decompressors from these sites:

Question (?) Mark, Blinking Folder, or Gray Screen at Startup
These are related but not identical issues. Their causes are outlined in Intel-based Mac- Startup sequence and error codes, symbols. Solutions may be found in:
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
Mac OS X- Gray screen appears during startup
In most cases the problems may be caused by:
Problem with the computer's PRAM - See Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM.
Boot drive's directory has been corrupted - Repair with Disk Utility.
Critical system files are damaged or deleted - Reinstall OS X.
The disk drive is physically non-functional - Replace the hard drive.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
The main difference if you are using Lion or Mountain Lion is that you must first boot from the Recovery HD:
    Boot From The Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstall Snow Leopard Without Erasing The drive

    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing The Drive

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • My macbook was stolen last month from my car. It would not power, it showed a white screen with folder with question mark in the middle? I don't have my serial number, is there a way to possibly track my computer?

My car was broken into in Uptown, MN last month and my Macbook was stolen along with my Wifi device. Although my computer would no longer power, it showed a white screen with a folder and question in the middle and then shut down. I hadn't had a chance to take it to have it checked, but is there a way to track my computer if I do not have the serial number? And if I purchase another computer is there a way to get the music that I purchased in iTunes back?
    Thanks

Regarding your music, yes you can download it again at no cost. Launch iTunes on the new computer, and sign in to your account using the same Apple ID you used previously. Go to the iTunes Store. On the right side under Quick Links select Purchased. Click on All Songs in the upper left. You'll see a list of the music you purchased from iTunes. In the lower right corner click the Download All link. Note that this may take a long time, particularly if you have a lot of songs. Use the fastest Internet connection that you can.
About the computer, unless tracking software was already installed on it and turned on there is no way to track it.
I would suggest changing passwords of any accounts that you have on the computer, such as email. If you have any credit card information stored on the computer, have them cancelled and replaced immediately.
Sorry to hear about your loss. It is very distressing, I know.
    Best of luck.

If you have the exact same problem - take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.  If you have AppleCare call them!

I do hope you have recent backup, because it look like your hard disk is failing. You can start up in Recovery Mode, and run Disk Utility to see if the disk can be fixed:  OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support

hello! i've a problem with my Imac. it shows me white screen with a folder with quastion. it could be a problem with hard drive. i should insert mac os cd, but i couldnt find it. in Russia, in Finland and in Sweden the same problem)

Have a look at some of the suggestions in this link:

  • On boot up, just white screen with logo and windmill.  Forever! Can't get out.

On boot up, just white screen with logo and windmill.  Forever! Can't get out.

Backup in case your disk is failing.  (Post back if you need instructions on how to do that w/o booting OS X.)
Start up in Safe Mode;  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14204?viewlocale=en_US
If it boots reliably in Safe Mode then it is probably a software issue.  Post back for more instructions.
    Reset PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
Boot in Recovery Mode.  (Hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys as your computer restarts.)  Run Disk Utility.  Click on the upper left system disk icon.  Does S.M.A.R.T. report “Verified”?  If not the disk is failing and will need to be replaced.  Click on the icon underneath and indented to the right, usually called “Macintosh HD”.  Repair Disk.  It should finish normally with a green OK message.  If it does not try to repair it again.
If it will not finish with the green OK message then use Disk Utility to erase the drive and then reinstall OS X.  (Be sure you have a backup before erasing the disk.  Post back if you need instructions on how to do that.)
If it repaired all errors and is still not booting normally, reinstall OS X.
If it is still sick after all these steps then the disk probably needs to be replaced or it could be a disk cable.  You replace these inexpensively and fairly easily yourself or take it to an Apple store for them to do it for you at a higher cost.  If it is still under warranty or AppleCare have Apple do it for you for free.  You may want to have Apple check the health of the system and disk before repairing it yourself.  Post back if you need instructions on replacing the disk and/or testing the disk cable.

  • I dropped my iphone 3gs and the screen has gone blank now showing a white screen with no icons can anyone advise me how to fix it?

I dropped my iphone 3gs and the screen has gone blank now showing a white screen with no icons can anyone advise me how to fix it?

    Tim is correct.
But, first step with 3GS white screen and most iPhone problems is Reset, hold both home and power buttons until iPhone begins to restart itself, usually about 10 seconds of holding both buttons. If still white screen.
Next step would be Restore the iPhone Firmware with iTunes on your computer. If still white screen.
Next step would be to follow Tim's advice, if you had not already.

  • My Ipod nano 6th gen shows a white screen with sad face

    Hi
My ipod nano is showing me a white screen with a sad face on it
I tried to reset it but with no use, everytime it resets, it returns back to the sad face
and itunes won't recognize the device
this is a picture of the screen
    any help please

While the nano is connected to your computer and iTunes is open, hold down the volume up, volume down and sleep/wake button at the same time until iTunes brings up a dialog then release the buttons.
The dialog should walk you through 'recovering' the nano. See if that does it for you.
    Has it gotten wet?

  • Quicktime White Screen with Audio

In the last couple of days, whenever I try to play quicktime files (.mov) in my browser, I get a white screen, but I can still hear the audio. These are usually short files (from blogs such as crooks and liars), and they are definitely .mov files.
I've tried playing them with the browser extensions in Safari and Firefox. I've also tried playing it directly in QT player. The only place they work is using VLC. What's happening??

It actually turned out to be a bad install of my quicktime software. I eventually discovered that the problem only affected one website's QT content, and what was especially odd was that this website had been working perfectly the day before. I even tried playing the videos that I had watched teh day before and they didn't work. As it happened, Apple released an update to QT a couple of days later, and installing that fixed the problem.
Your problem sounds a bit different, and since I don't do much encoding, I can't really help you out.

  • Quicktime on some websites is playing with a blank white screen with audio

I am finding that on some web sites quicktime sometimes plays improperly in Firefox in a recent build. I get a blank white screen but the audio still plays. I have spoken to others who are experiencing the same issue.
The issue will sometimes resolve itself if the window is resized, the scroll bar is moved or the page is refreshed. The later only works occasionally.
It is not occurring on the machine that I'm writing this from. It is happening on both PPC Macs as well as Intel Macs.

They only charge you the $49 for talking to someone on the phone, which I don't recommend anyways because lots of times the machine needs to actually be looked at.
I would reserve an appointment at the Apple Store Genius Bar. They DO NOT charge you even if you don't have a warranty. They only charge you if you want them to fix it for you, not for the actual diagnosis of the problem. If you can fix it yourself, they can show you for free and you can do it.
If you want them to fix it for you, they will charge you for the labor, not the actual appointment.

  • Getting white screen with file folder and question mark on it...help

My MacBook Pro starts up and only shows a white screen with a file folder with question mark on it.  I have not had problems prior to this.  Help!,

That means that no valid system could be found to boot from.  What might have caused that is hard to say, but try referring to this document:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1440
Note that if you are using Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion), you don't start up from your install disk.  Hold down command-R at startup instead.
