Avi file size compared to m2v file size

I saved a movie clip in MPEG for computer playback.  The file size was 112MB.  The preset was H.264 1440x1080i 25, no export audio, the codec was MainConcept H.264 Video, TV standard was automatic, frame dimensions were 720 by 480, frame rate was 29.97, field order was automatic, fixed aspect ratio was automatic, level was 4.1, bitrate encoding was VBR, 2 Pass, and Bitrate level was high.  I then saved the file in AVI and the file size was 426MB.  The preset was Microsoft AVI, no export audio, the video codec was Cinepak Codec by Radius, quality was 100, size was 720 by 480, frame rate was 29.97, field type was lowere first and aspect was square pixels.  Why would the file size nearly quadruple and what can I do to get the AVI file size down below 400MB?  Thanks.
Steve

Well, for one thing, you're going from one format to another -- but, more so, you're going from one codec (compression system) to another.
The H.264 codec is the one used for creating AVCHD video, although not all H.264 video is AVCHD. It can also be used as a delivery format (that's a format that you display online or play on a computer) -- which seems to be the case here. Your source is apparently from an AVCHD camcorder, although at that file size it must only be about 10 seconds long.
Though that's hard to say too. Codecs can be highly compressed or lightly compressed, so two files using the same codec and the same file format can be very different in size!
The Cinepak codec is also a delivery format, though it uses a completely different codec system as well as being for a different file format (AVI). You would neer use a file with a Cinepak codec as source material for editing. It's a highly compressed delivery format. Convert the file to a DV-AVI (an AVI using the DV codec) and it will likely be many times that size.

  • Max AVI file size into Final Cut Express?

I am a complete newcomer to mac and FC - About to begin loading all my old video onto disk. If I stream 90 min of Hi8 into one AVI file it will be easiest but will the file be too large for FC Exp - is there a file size limit or not - I am assuming not.

Sorry, simply my old Adobe Premier/Windows background - simply wanted to know whether there was any file size limit in FC however I have just captured and imported a complete tape so clearly not.

    I'm sure i'm missing something...
I have some very small avi files (under 10mb)... when I load them into imovie HD, it takes 2 plus minutes to load and the imported clip size goes up to 500mb.
is there anyway to keep the file size down?

  • How to record avi file in relative small size

i try to grab picture from usb camera and save to AVI file. but the file size are all relatively too big. I hope to use xvid filter that can support good quality and good compression. But for the AVI filter list can not list this filter. So i hope to ask how can i use this filter in the labview or what kind of other filter which have same function can meets my requirement.
I once asked the same question and got some feedback. So hope this question can be solved.

  • How do I export to AVI. file and make the size smaller?

Looking to export a film as a AVI file and alter the size and quality.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
you can use QT or FCP>Export> QT movie conversion but I like using Compressor.
In Compressor settings tab there's a button with a plus icon on the top right corner. Click it and in the popdown menu choose Quicktime Export Components.
You've just created a new untitled setting. It sits at the bottom of the settings in the untitled folder.
Drag and drop it onto your movie file just imported in Compressor. Double click it and/or see it in the inspector window. Give it a name and in the encoder type choose AVI.
Now (still in in the inspector window) if you click Options button below you can change a number of settings. Remember, the higher the bit rate the better the video will look but greater wil be the size of the video.
Do some tests to find best settings.
An example to use just as reference:
a 3GB DVCPRO HD video becomes 400MB AVI at 1000kbyts
    Hope that helps,

  • .avi files keep having HUGE jumps in size when importing to idvd?

im trying to burn season one of flight of the conchords to a dvd that i will be able to watch in my standard dvd player or xbox 360. each episode is a separate .avi file, each at about 250MB. when i drag and drop one into idvd, the size increases to around 2GB per file. I dont know much about computers and this is my first time trying to make a dvd. ive also tried converting the files into mpeg-2 and .mov files using video converter 3.2 prior to dragging them into idvd and have had no luck, they either dont work at all or it doesnt fix the size inflation issue. i also have imovie, but i am unfamiliar with this as well. ive read in forums that idvd doesn't care about file size because it converts them automatically, but this apparently isnt the case for my version or something. any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

    Welcome to the forums.
You've hit a key bit of info. Your .avi files are compressed and iDVD is uncompressing them to prepare the files for the standard DVD format (mpeg-2). iDVD's compression algorithms are reasonable but basic, and you're stuck with the 2hr max.
If you poke around some more, you'll see various options for squeezing more onto a DVD. The common tradeoff (like with VHS recording), is lower quality for longer lengths. If you're willing to invest some time/cash, for example, Roxio Toast has additional video compression capability, but the menus are pretty basic if that matters.
These suggestions assume, of course, that you own this material and are making a backup copy for your personal use in compliance with the laws or your jurisdiction.

  • Not getting an option of exporting in mpeg 4 format? AVI file the size of the file is extremely huge

    Hi,
I am not getting an option of exporting in mpeg 4 format? Infact when I am rendering in AVI file the size of the file is extremely huge. Please can somebody help me in reducing the file size & exporting in MPEG4 format.

You need to learn about encoding. The default file type is Lossless for a reason. If you are using Ray-tracing and you have a supported Cuda card you must use the Adobe Render Cue. If you are not using Ray-traced rendering then you should be using the Adobe Media Encoder.
This will get you started: Basic Workflow, the last section is on rendering.

  • Rendering .avi files without increasing size of file

    I have 1. a DV/PAl (1.07) 25fps file 733MB sent by client
    2. Insert clip rendered as a .mov (the rendering software does not have other options)
I combine the two in AE and render it out as an .avi file that I must return to client at same file size just with the special effect.
    PROBLEM:
I render out as an .avi and the file increases to 6Gigs (not joking).
The workaround is to take it into Premier and just reprocess the clip, which works, but adds an extra step.
    QUESTION:
Is there a codec that I need that will allow me to avoid taking it into Premiere. If so please be specific. I tried DivX and it crashed AE, so maybe I have the wrong version????
    Thanks

Why must the rendered clip have the same file size? That way you will work on a compressed clip that you then recompress again and deliver so that the final output can be compressed again. That's three lossy compressions; guess how the final output will look!
Instead: use lossless compression in the production and only output to a lossy compression format. DV is highly compressed and each recompression will destroy the image quality!
I'd recommend that they deliver a QuickTime PhotoJPEG @100% or a QuickTime Animation @100% (which supports an alpha channel). Alternatively you can use the BlackMagic Decklink QT codecs for 10-bit lossless compression. You can then render back to the same codec and you will not cause any qualityloss during the process.

  • Is there a size limit on importing avi files in PE4?

My attempt to import a 4 Gb avi file from an external hard drive is blocked by a generic failure. One of the suggested reason do not apply, namely the file (.avi) IS supported. Yes, it may be damaged, but it plays perfectly outside PE4. Or 'one of the necessary components may not have been installed'--if so which one?
Does anyone have a similar experience, and/or a solution.
    Pemser

I found DigitalMedia Converter years ago. I liked it so much, that I bought a copy for each of my computers (rather than just have one running it and using the LAN to move files about). I have an upgrade discount certificate, but have not yet upgraded my copies.
The things that I like about it are that it's quick, has "batch conversion" and that it does NOT install any CODEC's, but it uses all that I have properly installed. It works 99% of the time, just perfectly.
The only issue that I have ever encountered are with Duration and PrPro. Sometimes, the DV-AVI Type II's will Import into PrPro, but their Duration will not be correct - maybe 01:40:00 out of a 30:00:00 real Duration. My workaround for this behavior is to just Import the problem file into PrE 4 (in my case), and immediately do an Export/Share to DV-AVI Type II. I know, that's the same exact format/CODEC, but now, PrPro sees the correct Duration perfectly. Why? I have no clue. I have tried everything that I could to find out the differences, to no avail. The files show exactly the same in G-Spot and also spec out as identical in DupeFile Finder. Still, there has to be some difference, and PrPro picks up on that, and does not recognize the correct Duration. PrE 4 always has. This is extremely odd, as I can batch convert 4 parts of a file with the same exact CODEC, say DivX, and 3 of the 4 will have the correct Duration in PrPro - 1 will not, until I use PrE to "correct" things. Some day, I will find out the "why," but until then, I have an iron-clad workaround - PrE!
Hope that this helps. Also, many sing the praises of some freeware converters, like Prism, but I have never tried them. I'd looked a dozen others, those many years ago, and then found DMC and never looked further.
    Good luck,

  • Media Encoder - wrong size on AVI files

I have an 720 x 480 AVI video, and Media Encoder keeps importing it as 640 x 480. I don't see a setting or control for enforcing the right aspect ratio, and the Pixel Preview setting doesn't have an effect on the output. I've tried Resize Video to enforce the right dimensions but I still get black bars on the sides. Any suggestions?
I have the same video in MOV format, but Media Encoder won't recognize it even though I have QuickTime 5 installed. Do I need to upgrade to QT7?

The AVI file plays with the correct dimensions in Windows Media Player, and the Quicktime version also has the correct dimensions. I don't have Premiere Pro, and I'm using the version of AME that came with the Design Premium CS4 package.

  • In Premiere Pro CS5.5 AVI file imports audio only - no video.

I've got a file (one of 3) I've been given to create a smaller file (320x480) from.
The file is an avi file and plays (video and audio) just fine in the native Windows media player. (I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit) There are no issues of memory or HDisc space.
    Video:
The file is 2:21:29 in length.
    720x480
    Data rate 1489kbps
    Total bitrate 1617kbps
    29 frames/second
    Audio:
    Bit rate 128kbps
    Channels 2 (stereo)
    Audio sample rate 48 kHz
    The file is about 1.6Gb
This is one of 3 I recieved. The other two were of comparable specs and similar length (not exactly but one was longer, the other shorter.)
The problem is that this particular file (the other two import perfectly), when imported, only comes in as an audio file. No video imports. The other files import as audio and video. No error message either.
I've imported all kinds of video files in the past with different frame sizes, rates, and aspect ratios, and codecs, yet I've never had one that only imports the audio without the video.
    Suggestions?!

  • Converting avi files

Hi, I have been given the task of creating a film in imovie using clips of avi files shot on a creative vado (non HD).
I have quicktime pro version 7.6.4 (518.35). When I attempt to open the avi files to convert to work in imovie I get a message saying my version of quicktime does not contain the necessary components. Please can someone help and also let me know what is the best export/conversion settings??
    Regards
    Steve

Statement does mean files from QT to DV have audio but but following same route in streamclip the audio disappears. Streamclip app downloaded fresh from their site and tried current and new beta version with same poor results... Checked movie properties on AVI file and contains video xvid 1.0 and audio microsoft ADPCM file. When converted to DV in QT video changes to DV - PAL and audio to DV. When using stream clip video changes to DV - PAL and audio to DV but sound doesn't work??????
Very strange. Would normally have expected the reverse -- i.e., problems with some QT based applications but no problems in MPEG Streamclip as adaptive PCM is usually a "conversion" compatible but not always an "edit" compatible format for Apple applications. Would still like to run my own tests to see if I can duplicate your problem on my system(s) as the question of the source of the problem remains open at this time.
I'm using ilife 09 with imovie updated regularly. The reason I said it wasn't relevant was because the streamclip had no sound in QT so no need to try imovie.
Your reasoning is fine as far as it goes but using iMovie '09 opens the door for native editing in DV and AIC for higher video quality (as already mentioned), as well as, H.264 with unrestricted data rates, Motion JPEG and Photo JPEG for medium quality video compression to medium size files, and/or MPEG-4 and H.264 with restricted data rates for lower quality but much smaller editing files. It also restricts you from using the Animation codec which is otherwise one of my favorite intermediate compression formats (which, if Apple hasn't fixed the problem, imports to iMovie '08/'09 but only exports as a blank black screen). Basically this means you have more conversion options for editing natively in iMovie having different video data rates which, in turn, means you can balance the editing file size against preserved quality as may be needed for different iMovie projects.
Can i please ask the following. The file sizes vary hugely but the quality appears the same after conversions. The AVI file is 17mb, the DV conversion in QT is 242mb and the MOV file created in imovie for the project is 49mb???? I oask because of disk space?
File size is directly proportional to the total data rate (i.e., amount of data per unit of time). All this means is that the more data you have per second in a file, the larger that file will be for a given duration. DV typically has a total data rate of about 28.5, 57.0, or about 112-114 mbps depending on the specific video and audio codecs in use. (The codecs are sometimes referred to as DV25, DV50, or DV100.) DV 25 is usually seen as DV video with DV audio (i.e., DV/DV) files which, depending on which Apple application/utility is measuring the file size, may appear to be twice its actual size. (I.e., some applications count the audio and video DV separately and add them together when it shouldn't.) In any case, DV video is not highly compressed and so the files are relatively large. Since the art of compression is actually the art of "throwing out data," DV files tend to retain more of the visual data from the source file than when converting to other, highly compressed video formats. Unfortunately, these files have very strict standards regarding the encoding matrix the playback dimensions and some applications can, in certain instances, actually lose the anamorphic flag required for proper playback/handling which can cause serious problems for some users. This is one of the reasons I tend to prefer the AIC codec which was specifically developed as an intermediate codec for both anamorphic SD, as well as, HD content. (I.e., it is a more versatile codec in today's world of multi-dimensioned multimedia files.) The other, is that AIC has a typical video data rate about 20-25% smaller than DV video with about the same level of quality.
In any event, to get back to your original question, the DIVX 5 codec is a more efficient compressor having a much lower video data rate than DV video. (Simple compare the video data rates of each to see what I mean here.) When you convert the DivX encoded data to DV you are trading data rates/file size for the retention of as much of the original visual quality as you can. If your current project (e.g., a project targeted as a 320x240 posting to the internet) does not require the retention of maximum quality, then you have the option of trying a more efficient codec with a lower data rate which would, of course, produce a smaller file for editing in iMovie. For instance, I would normally expect an MJPEG/AIFF file combination to be about 40-50% the size of your DV editing file. You may wish to try an MJPEG/AIFF or MJPEG/AAC editing project to see if you can detect much loss in visual quality and then decide which format is best for your particular work flow.
Hope this helps to understand what is going on here.

  • AVI files and re-rendering

When my source files are .avi files, they are require a lot of time to render in the timeline, and when they are layered against each other, or any other video overlaps them in the timeline, they require re-rendering.
Just curious if there is any way to "convert" them so they behave more like the DV captures which rarely need re-rendering.

Okay, thanks for the tip. As far as using the settings that match my sequence settings, I'm not sure I can do that with the export to DV with QuickTime Player.
The frame size, vid rate, and compressor all match (720 x 480, 29.97 fps, DV/DVPRO-NTSC). However the Data Rate on these new exported DVs is 6.9 MB/sec compared with 3.6 MB/sec on the captures from tape, and the Aud Rate is 32.0 KHz compared to 48.0 KHz.
In the export window of QuickTime Player, I don't have control over too many things, just DV Format, Video Format (NTSC/PAL), Scan Mode, Aspect Ratio, and Audio Format.
The resulting DV files after the export still require rendering on the timeline.
