.avi file won't work!

My friend sent me a movie in .avi format. I opened it, and have no picture and no sound, yet the time ticker moves. Sometimes, I get a message from Quicktime saying "components may be missing". But since I am a technology illiterate, I don't know what to download... Anyone can help?
I use Quicktime Version 7.0.2 on Mac OS X 10.4.2

The Movie Info window should show what codecs are used in the file. Do a Google search for Mac (and Tiger) compatible versions, download and install them. Relaunch QuickTime and the .avi should play.
A codec compresses and de-compresses the audio and video tracks of the file. Not all are Mac compatible. Read some of the other posts to find more answers.

  • Importing cr2 raw files won't work on ios 6 when it worked fine on ios5. Anyone have a solution?

I have  been importing cr2 raw files to my iPad using ios 5 but importing cr2 raw files won't work on ios 6. Sees files in camera but when import stops it fails with an exclamation mark in red circle. Anyone have a solution?

Don't know if you care anymore or it applies, but I was able to get things working but it took drastic measures.
I had to do a full system reset and update by doing the following:
    - Make note of all your settings in your system and apps especially accounts and forget about in app data that's only on your iPad and not in a cloud service because it will be gone after this
    - Connect iPad to Mac and startup iTunes
    - Hold down Home and Power buttons simultaneously for about 8 sec until the screen turns black
    - Release the Power button but continue holding the Home button until there's a popup on your screen which indicates it's in recovery mode
    - Follow the instructions to recover your iPad but recover it to factory state, not recover from a backup
    - Reinstall all your apps and content
    - Reconnect to all your services on your system and apps
I could not restore from a backup since it brought back my bad data too.  It also didn't restore my music and no matter what I tried it wouldn't put my music onto my iPad.  Had to start clean.
It appears over time that the system gets dirty and there's lots of bad data that can't get resolved.  This is especially true if some of your apps have crashed a bunch.

Nope. I do the same exact thing. If you have DVD's and blu-rays you can't download a free application called Handbrake. You can set it to Apple TV2 automatic format and they will come out as playable m4v's that can play I'm iTunes. All you have to do is turn on Home Sharing in both iTunes and your Apple RV and you'll be good to go!

  • .avi files no longer work in quicktime

hi. I recently reinstalled Mac OS X 10.4.11 and now .avi files don't work work in quicktime player. The timer along the bottom still counts what looks to be the right time, but there is no sound or picture, except with other file types, it seems (or at least with .mpg 's it's OK, they're the only file types I've tried) I've got VLC player, so it's obviously not a massive inconvenience, but it's irking me and I wondered if anyone could help me out.

You probably need to download and install Perian from http://perian.org/

  • JMStudio won't play .avi files - mpeg-2 works fine

Why doesn't JMStudio play .avi files?
A small application that I created with JMF 2.1.1 has the same trouble.
My .avi files can be played successfully with mediaplayer and also zoom player but JMStudio chokes on them. Why?
I want to create a two-pane player for side-by-side video comparison with JMF but I don't want to start the effort if simple .avi playback is not possible.
Sun's JMF 'supported format' page shows that all forms of .avi are at least 'playable' - yet my files are not.
I have several mpeg-2 files that are playable in JMStudio and also in my simple app - so I know that the code is working.
There are several old threads on this forum that ask this question but none of the threads give a decent answer.
    Please help.
    Thanx,
    skigrinder

    Got it working.
Apparently, JMF can't handle type-1 .avi files but it can handle type-2 .avi files.
Nero and Sony-DvGate both create type-1 .avi files in the capture process from a DV camcorder.
    I found a (Windows) utility - DvConverter - that will convert a type-1 .avi file to type-2.
I'm now able to play these type-2 .avi files in JMFStudio and also in my own prototype player.
Surprisingly, the FramePositioningControl functions also work - skip() and seek() !!!
I'm currently working on eliminating the 'comb-teeth' effect that exists in both JMFStudio and my own player.
I've read that this effect is the result of interlacing artifacts but my experience has shown that it also has a lot to do with the codec that's running. In windows, installing, un-installing, and re-installing codecs has a tendancy to mess with the registry in unpleasant ways resulting in a lot of time wasted trying to get rid of this 'comb-tooth' effect.
Andrew, do you know of a foolproof way to solve this problem on windows?
    Thanx,
    skigrinder

  • Avi file won't import into Premiere CS4 after re installing

Recently I purchased a new PC (Windows 7 64 bit, i7 processor). I re installed Premiere Pro CS4 and copied over my project files from my old system (Windows Vista 64 bit, AMD quad core processor). I attempted to load a project that was created on the old system, which contained an avi file that was done in AE CS5, the avi file was not downloaded from a camera. When Premiere kept locking up when I attempted to load the project, I finally figured out that it was getting hung up trying to load this avi file. After further investigation, I found that the avi file wouldn't play using any type of player, including WM Player, and DivX player. Funny enough, QT played the file, but only after a delay of about 10 minutes before opening. All of the posts I've seen on the forums indicate codec issues. I've installed three different codes, and used gspot to inspect the file and it indicated "no codec needed".
I must reiterate that on my old system, the file was created in AE CS5 and exported as an avi, and works fine.
    Can anyone shed some light

Report back with the codec details of your file, use the programs below... A screen shot works well to SHOW people what you are doing

  • AVI file won`t open - unsupported or damaged

I am using Premiere CS5, and did an edit about 5 days ago with .avi files recorded with FRAPS - screen recorder, everything was fine...
When I open that project now, it asks me to find the file because I changed my HDD letter, and when I find it, it says "Unsupported or damaged file"
    I don`t know why?
How it worked few days ago?
The same is happening when I try to import that in new project...
The files has just been on hard drive, and I haven˙t touched them...
I can play them only with VLC...
I tried Digital Video Repair, and show like it fixed the file, but I still can`t open it up..
How can it be that the file damages itself?

    Yep... seen it before
Download VLC Media Player and install it.
In the folder containing your AVI files, create a new text document called "avi2mp4.bat" (without the quote marks). Be sure it has the .BAT extension.
Paste the following into the batch file:
    @ECHO OFF
    for %%a in (*.avi) do "C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc" -I dummy "%%a" --sout=#:file{dst="%%~na".mp4} vlc://quit
If VLC is installed in the Program Files folder and not the Program Files (x86) folder, remove the " (x86)" from this line, and save the file.
To run the batch, simply double-click it, or you can drag and drop AVI files onto it, and they will be rewrapped as MP4s with the same filename as the original. If you use the drag and drop approach, you can save this file anywhere on your hard drive, and any files dropped onto it will be converted and placed in the same folder as the original.
That's it; the MP4s will (should, anyway) import into Premiere without any further workarounds.

  • Quictime Player WRAW avi files won't play

I have some video .avi files that I created in Matlab using the movie2avi command. On my old dual G4 running Tiger, these videos play fine in Quicktime player 7. These videos won't play on my machine running snow leopard. When I look at the movie inspector, it says that the videos are WRAW videos. In snow leopard, I try to open them in QT 7.6.6, and they won't play. The screen is black. Next to format in the movie inspector it says ", (it doesn't say WRAW like it does in Tiger.
I have downloaded perian, divx, xvid, flip4mac, and none of these have helped. VLC player can play them, but I want to edit several of these avi movies together in imovie. This was no problem in Tiger, but now it is major.
Is there some trick to getting these videos to play properly. Someone please help.
    Thanks

You may have Quicktime X on the Snow Leopard rig. Completely different set of legacy codecs than what are avilable in QT7+. Yoiur Snow DVD should include a QT7 installer, or so I've heard.
Speaking of legacy codecs, there is a setting someplace in QT that enables legacy codecs. Might help.
In the end, though, might be easier to locate an old G4 or G5 Mac and transcode to a more conventional format although you will still experience tremendous loss of pixel data if you try to compress too much.
MPEG4 is highly compressed and you have not stated the resolution of your starting files and your output movie. Science and math simulation applications can display huge files using magic. MPEG4 is really messy.

  • .avi files won't import into imovie 09!

    Hi,
I make sims movies/machinima and I recently updated from imovie HD to imovie09.
The recording features on sims 3 save the files as .avi, and I have recently realized...
I cannot import them into imovie 09!
There are around 300 of these in game recorded videos, and i don't really want to convert them ALL seperately.
Is there an app/ add on that would let imovie09 import .AVI files? or is there another (reasonably priced0 editing program that i could use to edit movies? ( preferably with chroma key/ green screen )

Well, here is a hail Mary thought...
Try using the Mac's finder to convert to a codec that your Mac can handle. Just right click on the file and encode away.
    Sometimes works, sometimes doesn't.
Here is a link showing how to do it.

  • .AVI File won't play in CS4, Gspot says all Codecs are properly installed

    Hello,
I'm trying to edit a video in adobe premier pro from an Olympus XZ-1 (.avi file/mpjeg) but it doesn't play at all.
I tried to find if there where any codecs missing with Gspot, but it says all codecs are in place.
What else can be the problem and how can I solve it?
Thank you very much in advance!
    - Lieve

    Jason,
    Welcome to the forum.
Yes, there is a clearcut answer, with three possible variations.
First, the Nikon should have their version of the MJPEG CODEC on a utility disc. That CODEC might install via the camera's driver, might be a separate install from the disc, or might install as part of a utility (say an editing program) on that disc. Not sure exactly where it will be located, but I feel confident that Nikon will have provided it. That will be the best, as different camera mfgrs. tweak common CODEC's. Even if you do not plan on using an included utility, you might need to install it, just to get the Nikon MJPEG CODEC. I did that for a Canon, and a Panasonic, and got their specific CODEC's, for their AV files.
The two variations would be either the Morgan, or MainConcept MJPEG CODEC, which will be a download and install. The weakness of these CODEC's is that they are more general, and might not reflect a Nikon tweak. That is why I mentioned Nikon's version first. It WILL be as good as it gets.
Good luck, and wish that I knew exactly where the Nikon MJPEG CODEC was located, or what process installed it, but if you find it added, after an installation, I would appreciate if you would update the thread, so that others will then know what to install, to get that CODEC.

  • AVI files won't open on my iMac

Can anyone suggest how I can fix a problem with AVI files on my iMac?
Every time I try to open the files they crash the software i.e. Quicktime, Realplayer and iMovie. The same files will open OK on my iBook running the same OS version. I've re-booted, re-installed software, set preferences and still no change.
    Any ideas?

"I'd still love to find the Mac answer though"
Well David unfortunately this you wont find, simply because Apple does not support that media format.
So you will have to use applications like "HandBreak" to convert files to Apple preferred formats, so you can use only Apple apps like iTunes and Quick Time....
Or if you like to use those formats then you will have to use alternative apps for Mac like DivX or VLC Players to play them.
I hope this helps your dilemma

  • AVI files won't import into iMovieHD (v. 5.0.3)

I have a lot of short AVI movies from a Canon Powershot digital camera that I want to edit in iMovie HD. However, iMovie will not import these AVI files. I get this error message: "Error during import. The file could not be imported. Unknown Error."
Great. Now what?! Is there any free software I can get to convert the AVI files -- or is buying Quicktime Pro the best solution?

The file type is a VCM image codec. I have no idea what that means.
    made some research... found that:
The Video Compression Manager (VCM) version of the Windows Media Video 9 codec enables earlier versions of encoding and editing applications to support the Windows Media Video 9 codec in file containers such as Audio Video Interleaved (AVI). This codec package also allows Windows Media Video (WMV) files based on Windows Media Format 9 Series to be played in Windows Media Player 6.4
so, probably, inside your .avi container resides some .wmv9 file.. that could mean:
    a) you need to purchase a plug-in from www.flip4mac. (try first the free playback-option, wether you hear sound at all!)
    b) some weird form of DRM (digital rights management) which doesn't allow conversion... (??)
ask the creator of this file, to save in a more compatible, more standards conform codec ... ;-))

  • Mpeg-2 files won't work in Final Cut Pro

Please help! I was given mpeg-2 files to edit in Final Cut Pro 6, and they don't play in FCP or Quicktime. Is there a way to convert them to a format that will work?
The dimensions are 1440x1080, MPEG-2 Video, MPEG Layer 2 codec, not sure the frame rate.
I do have the original miniDV tapes, but they won't play in my JVC deck - just a black screen. I think the footage was filmed on a Sony camera, and I think I remember hearing Sony cameras film in mpeg-2?

do I just export to Quicktime and use current settings (ProRes)?
Yes. Make it a Self-Contained file.
This will be put on DVD and we're looking for the best quality to send to film fests. I
Use one of the Best Quality, time based DVD presets in Compressor. Import the resulting files into DVD Studio Pro.
It's a short film, so I won't need to compress it.
Yes you do. A DVD uses a MPEG 2 video and ac3 audio track as its basis. Using Compressor as outlined above will produce those files.
