.avi files come up as a white screen

Anytime I try to play a .avi file I just get a white screen in the quicktime window and a little pop-up that tells me I don't have the required plug-ins to play this movie. So I go to the site and there are about 20 different plug-ins... which one do I download.. Links?

The codecs on that page are not likely to work for most avi files nowadays. You can find the name of the decompressor (codec) by opening MovieInfo in QT Player, even if you have a white screen. If that doesn't give you a name you can try the codecs from these two sites:
http://www.divx.com
http://www.3ivx.com
Another option is to try to view them in this freeware, which will play some formats and file types that QT will not play: VLC

  • Replaced iPhone5 and my photos haven't downloaded properly, they come up as a white screen with a loading icon. Been like this for 1 month now.

    Hi,
My iPhone 5 was backed up on iCloud, when I got a replacement and went to back it up it seems to have left out my photos. When I try to look at my old photos they come up with a white screen and a loading icon. Does anyone know how I can fix this?
    Thanks

  • Using avi files with DVpal. Working with screen grab footage.

    Hi.
I am currently editing some short little promo's that mix DVpal footage with .avi footage. The .avi footage are screen grabs of someone navigating a website, and are designed as cutaways to illustrate a ptc.
However when they are rendered out on the timeline, the text from the website that is in the screen grab video becomes too distorted/(rasterized i think), essentially unreadable. I was planning on some degradation, but didn't realize it would destroy the image so much.
I have tried exporting/converting the .avi files to certain .mov formats but all with essentially the same problem.
Does anybody know a work around solution to help solve this problem. Or is the best way to redo the screen grabs as .movs with the relevant settings, and can anyone recommend some software for this job.

I think the problem is more based in the fact that you're working in DV. Can you work in a higher quality format?

  • Help! when i turn on my mac while holding down the option key to swith from windows to mac (i have just installed windows via bootcamp) it comes up with a white screen with a grey padlock asking for a password.

I have not installed the windows drivers yet if that is relevant. here is a video of the problem https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xR9dQPSIyNg

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
That's the EFI password. If you don't know the password, the only thing you can do to turn it off is to take the Mac to an Apple Store.
If you know the password, follow these steps to turn your EFI password off:
    1. Press Command and R keys while your Mac is starting to start into OS X Utilities.
    2. Go to Utilities menu > Firmware Password Utility, turn it off and restart your Mac

  • When I import mp4s only the audio comes through with a white screen?!

I have snow lepard, macbook pro (its 7 yrs old but has intel) and have all the updates! I dont know what to do!! Maybe Im missing a script somewhere or something?
Also,Is there another free video editing program that I can use until I get this figured out?
    Any help would be great...
    Thanks in advance

As Karsten Schlüter, says MPEG Streamclip is a great way to make sure the video is as compatible as possible. You can also try downloading to multimedia helpers like DivX (in the case of some Xvid/Divx MP4 formats). I have a Flip mino video camera that requires DivX to be installed to play them back. And once I installed it the videos would be editable in iMovie '11. Something to try.

  • Avi files on quicktime version 7.2

I have recently downloaded the latest version of quicktime and can no longer play .AVI files there is just a white screen and no sound. I did previously have the xvid codec but this has also been updated and when downloaded it just makes quicktime crash immediately.
Any advice welcome, Please note that I am still in the dark ages and running on 10.3.9.

It is bad enough getting my head around the fact I need add-ons just to watch something without QT doing this! Even setting movie default players as VLC/Realplayer etc makes no impression!
    Any advice appreciated!
If you really plan to muck about with AVI files, then you need learn how to determine what compression formats were used to create them, how to search for the needed components, and learn to live with disappointment. AVI is a file container -- not a compression format. It was not designed by Apple which only programmed QT to recognize the container. Even the file originator, Microsoft, formally dropped AVI support a decade ago when they switched to Windows Media. In addition, if this is an internet download, the error message could equally mean that you don't have the required codec for playback or that the file was improperly terminated either when created/closed or when uploaded/closed to the internet -- a common form of file corruption frequently associated with such indiscriminate file distribution which other media players may (or may not) ignore. The fact that third-party players won't play the file would seem to indicate the file in question is most likely corrupted.

  • AVI file shot on one of these USB HD Flipcams, wont work in Final Cut...

    Hi guys,
A client wants me to edit some footage they've provided on a USB stick, shot on one of these new flipcams, like this...http://www.overstock.com/Electronics/Rokinon-DV500HD-Fun-Flix-720p-HD-Digital-Vi deo-Camera/4238763/product.html?cid=133635
I have lots of AVI files, Quicktime can't play them but VLC plays them fine. When I try to play them in Final Cut, it recognizes the file but just plays a white screen and no audio.
I've try all sorts of converters on PC and mac but can't seem to get anywhere, any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Alex

I think I'd download MPEG Streamclip and use it to convert the files to something you know FCP is going to recognize. DV, ProRes, etc.

  • Quick Look no longer works with AVI files.

    Hi
For some reason, quicklook no longer looks inside avi files. I get a black screen and audio, but no visual. This is a recent problem, nothing has changed on my system other than itunes 9 being installed. AVI files worked fine with quicklook but have now stopped.
Anyone have any ideas what could cause the problem? I've rolled back to itunes 8 but the problem persisted.
    thanks

    Hi there

  • Mac won't go past the white screen and apple logo

My one year old mac won't turn on, it comes up with the white screen with the apple logo, after a few seconds a loading bar comes up and after it finishes loading the mac just turns off. When I turn it back on it just does the same thing. I tried resetting the pram (it even chimed twice) but it still did the same thing. The problem began with the power cord being accidentally unplugged, when I plugged it in and turned on the mac the grey screen came up asking for my password, it then began to load but after about 5 seconds went back to the grey screen. I tried logging in over ten times and after failing turned off the mac, now it's doing the loading thing...
Oh and I don't know if this is relevant but I had a mountain lion update that needed to be done?

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    a. Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
How to back up and restore your files
    b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
    c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
If you've booted from an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
    Step 3
Boot in safe mode.* The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Post for further instructions.
When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is damaged and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to step 5.
If you can boot and log in now, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 4
Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 5
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see step 1.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
    Step 6
Boot into Recovery again. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.
    Step 7
Repeat step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a backup.
    Step 8
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
