Avi files in quicklook have no audio

Most of the videos on my computer are mp4 or m4v files, but I have a few which are avi. They play fine in VLC, but not in quicktime or quicklook. The video is fine, but there's no audio.
How do I fix this?
Also is it related to the fact that avi files often come up as an icon in quicklook when my folder is viewed as columns, but plays (the video without audio) when it's in cover flow? This doesn't happen everytime, but often...

you probably are missing necessary plugins to play those avis in Quicktime player. try installing Flip4mac

and/or Perian

  • AVI files corrupted(blocking pic & dropped audio). Any fix available?

I just transfered a lot of AVI files to my external to save some space. They were all perfect before. Now, if I play them from the external HDD or on my internal HDD, they are all corrupt. Every one of them. The picture is all blocky and the audio keeps dropping. I have transfered them to a Windows machine, and they are still corrupt. BTW, I am using the most recent VLC.
Is there any way to restore these files? How do I avoid this in the future? I really don't understand how they became corrupt.

Turns out, the FW800 firmware in my enclosure needed to be updated. Fixed!

  • Avi file does not have the same resolution as image file?

I'm using LabView with an IEEE-1394 camera and I set up the camera to record at a resolution of 1280 x 960 and can snap images and save them at that resolution from Measurement and Automation Explorer, but when I record avis using LabView, they have a resolution of 720 x 480 even though the images being written to the avi are 1280 x 960. I have had this same problem trying to make new videos from the original in which I extract a part of the image and write it to a new avi file... even though the extracted image is something like 620 x 300, when I play the avi (or get avi info), it says the avi has resolution of 720 x 480. I've tried creating an IMAQ, then using the set image size sub-VI to set the image to the size I want and the image shows up with the right resolution but the resulting avi has the wrong resolution, so my sub-videos are distorted. Is there some way to set the resolution of the avi other than by writing an image of that resolution? I'm using the compression filter DV Video Encoder... would that make any difference?
    Thanks!
    Kelly

    Hey Kelly,
As far as the different codecs that are available, it all depends on what type of filter you want to use. They vary so widely that it is hard to say that one is better than another. Also, it depends on what type of compression that you want to use will also determine which codec you will want. Some use lossy compression and some use lossless compression. With lossy, you will lose some data when it compresses, but lossless will not. Lossless on the other hand will produce large data files, as it can only compress a certain amount without losing data.
One thing that you might want to consider is using some of the Vision functions to track changes in pixel values from one image to the next. There are a lot of different processing that you can do on your images before you store them to file by using the NI Vision functions. Other than that, you might have to just play around with the different codecs to find which one will work best for you.
Let me know if you have any further questions or concerns. Thanks, and have a great day.
    Regards,
    DJ L.

  • Premiere Elements 7 won't recognise a .avi file, and only reads the audio of the file. Help?

Hello, so here is my predicament:
I own Premiere Elements 7, licenesed and all. Totally legit.
It is reading .mp4 files, at least, that's the only other video file type I've used. It is reading the video of that file.
But for some reason, when I drag a .avi file into the software, it reads the file type as 'audio' when it is obviously a video file! It doesn't recognise the video of the file at all.
When I drag it into the timeline, it only shows the audio! Video section is empty.
    Why is this happening?
    Screenshots of the problem attached!!

What is the source of this AVI file? Is it from a miniDV camcorder, captured over a FireWire connection?
AVIs from non-camcorder sources can use any of thousands of codecs, most of which are not compatible with Premiere Elements. Open the file in a program like G Spot and post the specs for audio and video codecs, frame rate, dimensions, etc., and we may be able to suggest a file converter.

  • Avi file from PC user has audio but not video

When I play a .AVI file from a PC user through Quicktime pro, I am getting no video, but can hear the file fine.
Any ideas what may be wrong?
Playing it on a PC gives full video & audio
    Cheers
    Justin

Using VLC is about as simple as it gets and if that will not play the avi they are encoded in a very rare codec. One last thing you can do is open the avi in QT Player and open MovieInfo in the Window menu. If it says they are encoded with an Indeo codec then there is no way to play them in OS X. There are Indeo codecs for the Classic environment but none for OS X. Indeo codecs for Classic

  • Can't import .avi files and I have Pro

Ok... I bought Quicktime Pro about 3 years ago and after they updated to the next version, it wouldn't import my FlaskOut.avi from the program FlaskMPEG. It states something like "Quicktime doesn't have the software to view this file. Unfortunatly, it's not on the Quicktime website." I never had a problem with this until I upgraded to the next version. I re-installed the old version and put in the Key but that version doesn't work anymore either. I need to import these to place trailers on my website. Do I need to buy Quicktime Pro again? And if I do will I be able to import these files then? If it won't work, do you know I program I could use? Thanks guys.

    You need to install Perian.

  • I cannot play .avi files althought i have perian and flip4mac!

i downloaded a movie and i cant play it with quicktime althought i have perian and flip4mac, help please

Some AVIs require codecs for audio, video, or both which aren't available on a Mac. If Perian can't handle a specific AVI, there probably isn't any Mac OS X software which will.

  • AVI File Playing video but not audio!

Hey guys I am terribly sorry if this has already been discussed before but I am really getting aggrevated here. When I show the format it says : Generic MPEG-4, 624 x 352, Unknown
MPEG Layer 3, Stereo, 48.000 kHz
Anyone know a codec? I have downloaded everything I have seen that might be a codec and it's kind of scary that none have worked yet. The video is perfect but i hear nothing!

  • .avi files and 'ms' format audio

    Hi Folks,
I have QuickTime 7 Pro and a .avi file I was sent (actually downloaded on FTP). I also have a host of other video players (MPlayer OS X 2, VLC, RealPlayer 10) All of them can play the .avi file but I get no audio. If I choose "Show movie properties" in QuickTime it lists the audio as 'ms' format. Is there any way to get QuickTime, or any other video player, to play the sound on this file?
Hope someone can help me with this.

    G4 Dual 1.25Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

any suggestions for the same problem but for OS X (10.3.9)?
You'll have to find out what codec was used for the movies you want to view to determine what you need. Note that not all codecs for the various .avi movies are available for QuickTime.
If you want to try "hit and miss", you can try the codecs at http://www.divx.com/ and http://www.3ivx.com/ and see if one of them will work for you. If you just want to play the movie any way you can, you can also give this player a try:

  • In Premiere Pro CS5.5 AVI file imports audio only - no video.

I've got a file (one of 3) I've been given to create a smaller file (320x480) from.
The file is an avi file and plays (video and audio) just fine in the native Windows media player. (I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit) There are no issues of memory or HDisc space.
    Video:
The file is 2:21:29 in length.
    720x480
    Data rate 1489kbps
    Total bitrate 1617kbps
    29 frames/second
    Audio:
    Bit rate 128kbps
    Channels 2 (stereo)
    Audio sample rate 48 kHz
    The file is about 1.6Gb
This is one of 3 I recieved. The other two were of comparable specs and similar length (not exactly but one was longer, the other shorter.)
The problem is that this particular file (the other two import perfectly), when imported, only comes in as an audio file. No video imports. The other files import as audio and video. No error message either.
I've imported all kinds of video files in the past with different frame sizes, rates, and aspect ratios, and codecs, yet I've never had one that only imports the audio without the video.
    Suggestions?!

Post in the Premiere Pro forum. This forum is for suite specific issues only.

  • How can the Windows Media Player 12 be made to play WVC210 .avi files?

I just built a new computer and it won't play the motion captured videos of the WVC210. It has Windows 7 Home Premium as the operating system. My machines running XP play the WVC210 files GREAT. Is there a codec I can add to the WMP12 so that it will play the .avi files. I have 3 cameras around the property, 2 WVC210 and 1 WVC200. 1 camera has the audio turned off so switching to MP4 (no audio) made that work OK. But the camera in the office I need to have audio and would rather stick to WMP over something like VLC. VLC plays the files fine but I much prefer WMP. I'm hopeing to find out how to have Windows Media Player 12 play the .AVI files from the WVC210 cameras. Any Help??

There appears to be issues with codecs on WMP 12 and Windows 7

  • QT does not open AVI file

    hello,
I have installed Perian but with Mountain Lion QT does not open AVI file (no audio and no video)
    do you have any suggestion?

I am using QT pre-installed in Mountain (should be X)
QT X can only play files using codecs it is programmed to expect to be used in the loaded file container/with the loaded file's stated extension. For example, QT X will not play a "muxed" MPEG-2/AC3 file with an MOV or VOB file extension but will usually play the file if the extension is changed to TS, MPG, or MPEG. On the other hand, the QT 7 Player tends to look at the internal header information and select a codec based on what the file says it needs for the actual playback. Thus, the QT 7 Player may frequently play files that the QT X Player does not play.
Besides supporting the the AVI file container, your QT system must also be configured to support the actual audio and video codecs contained in the AVI file and not have a "conflict" problem. For instance, Motion JPEG support for QT was dropped with the release of Lion. AVI files containing MJPEG video thay plays correctly under Snow Leopard will no longer play under Lion or Mountain Lion with additional support. In this case, Perian still provides such support. It also still provides support for DIVX, XVID, 3IVX, and similar third-party codecs commonly found in AVI containers. However, Perian support for such files can become conflicted if you have also installed the actual third-party codecs along with Perian and the different codecs fight over which is to be used for playback.  This is why it is important to know the actual codecs used to create files using generic file containers like AVI and MOV and the codec components actually installed on your system, as well as, their potential for creating conflicts.
As to the actual playback of files, there are basically only three options (as indicated by the URL provided above:
    1) You can conform the file and/or your system codec component configuration to play your files using a QT player app if possible,
    2) You can use an alternative media player app the contains "native" support for the file containera and/or codecs used to create the files, or
    3) You can convert the file to a compression format and file container that that is already natively supported by QT-based applications.
Since do not seem to know or are unwilling to identify the specific codecs causing a problem here, the only workflows left to you would be to try playing the file in an alternative media player which contains its own built-in codec support (e.g., VLC) or convert the files to something your current QT system configuration can handle (e.g., use a converter with built-in codec support like HandBrake).

  • How to open AVI files?

I have six AVI files that I very much need to see.   They come on a CD-ROM.  I have transferred them to my hard drive.   They do not work from either the CD-ROM or the hard drive.
GetInfo identifies these videos as “AVI movie.”
The closest I can get is with Real Player, Version 12.0.1 (1750).  This application opens a window for each file.  The thermometer across the bottom of the window moves as if the application is playing the video, but the window remains totally black.   (The videos should not have any sound, so I do not expect to hear anything from them.)
I have no luck at all with VLC and QuickTime Player.  VLC, Version 2.0.7 Twoflower (Intel 64bit), reports:
QuickTime Player, Version 10.0 (131), reports:
I get this problem with videos from people who do not use Macinstoshes.
Does anyone know how to open such AVI files?

I have Perian 1.2.3.  Its update function reports that is the latest version.
Perian's GetInfo has the following report, which says nothing about the T263 codec:
