.avi files in slideshow

I have a bunch of .jpg's and several.avi files and I wanted to mix them together in a slideshow where there are a few pics, then a little video clip plays, then more pics, etc. Is this possible in iphoto or should I be using a different program?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Have you tried?
iPhoto 09 will mix video and stills in a slideshow. However, as to whether your avi files will work you can only find out by trying. This is because the avi format is really a container for a lot of different video types, and it may not work with all types.
If iPhoto doesn't work then try iMovie or and app like Final Cut Express.

  • IPhoto - Import of AVI files

Used to be that when I had a mix of photos and AVI videos, the upload brought both and it was an easy copy to get at the videos.
Now, since '08 (version 7.1.1), after the upload, I get a list of AVI files and even some IMG files withe the statement that iPhoto found invalid files. If I use the old version, it works as it has for years.
    Any solutions to this?

How much free space do you have on your hard drive?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Import of avi files from camera is SLOOOOW

My Fuji FinePix Z10fd shoots video in avi format. Importing these into iPhoto 6 is so slow that the process is almost worthless. It literally takes up to 15 minutes to import a 4 minute avi file. Once the files are in, I can view them, move them into iMovie HD, etc. No problem there.
The import of photos is fine. Its just the avi files causing me grief.
    Any ideas?

  • Avi files got corrupted

I recorded a series of avi files with two different Canon cameras while in South Africa in January. When I downloaded them, they played fine, and were really quite terrific.
Somehow, several months ago, possibly in doing software updates, the file sizes got reduced to somewhere between 7KB and 140KB. Now, when I try to play them, QT launches, and all i get is the opening frame, and the duration shows as zero.
What could have happened to them? Are there invisible files floating around on my hard drive?

    Glen:
What you're trying to play is the jpg of the first frame that iPhoto creates upon import. Are you must double clicking on the thumbnail in iPhoto when trying to play?
Control-click on the thumbnail and select Show File. When you get to the file via the Finder check its size to see if it's the full sized file instead of the thumbnail.
If you exported the movie file out of iPhoto and didn't use the Format = Original option the exported file will be a jpg or whatever format is selected instead as a movie file.

  • Mute Audio Track of Embedded .avi File

Using iDVD, I created a slideshow with many pictures and .avi files. Because I'm using a background soundtrack, I would like to mute/delete the audio tracks of the .avi files embedded in the slideshow. Is this possible? If so, how?

    hey there Mark,
you'd need to use iMovie. i prefer to build slide shows in iMovie6 as it's easier to use use for "more advanced editing". if you have iLife 08 you can dl iMovie 6 here: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imovieHD6.html.
    good luck.

  • AVI  files audio is missing in iPhoto library

Suddenly all my audio is missing from my avi files in my iPhoto library.
The only thing that has changed is I recently updated to the latest version of iMovie, which now
shows thumbnails of iPhoto video. It took about 30 minutes to generate the
thumbnails and since then the audio is gone. Anyone know what could have happened and what I can
do to restore the audio to my avi files? Thanks

What version of Quicktime are you running? If you haven't update to QuickTime 7.5 updater and then try the movies again.

  • Quicklook no longer working with AVi files in 10.7

    Howdy,
Mysteries abound!  Updated to 10.7, and ever since, I have been having two problems:
    1.  AVI files no longer open open using QuickLook; all I get is is the AVI icon, and the "Open in VLC" button.
    2.  The icon preview for AVI files is no longer displayed as well; only the generic VLC icon shows (and yes, I have the "Show icon preview" box cheeked in the Finder preferences).
Is anyone else having the same problem?  Does anyone know how to remedy this?  Thanks in advance! (^_^)

Flip4Mac (installed) and Perian (installed) provide this support. As a matter of fact, I can play AVI and WMV in Quicktime 10.2 and 7.6.6. It's the Finder or the QuickLook subsystem what has a problem.
Besides that, having those QuickTime components installed, there are no problems in a new installation from scratch in a nother disk. But I'm trying to avoid that and to restore in Mountain Lion part of the functionality of my Mac under Snow Leopard.
There should be a preference, cache, temp file or something like that that is impeding QuickTime or the Finder to access the necessary components to preview and quicklook AVI and WMV files.

  • Playing inserted avi files in Adobe Acrobat 9 or later

A user has inserted avi files into Adobe and it always worked up to version 8.1.
Any version later than that, the avi files will not play anymore.
Is there any way to make them play or will all his files need converted to another source?
Converting them all to a different format would be quite the task as there are many videos involved.
    Thanks, Jeff

You can't edit Excel files in Adobe Acrobat.

  • I can't open .avi files in Photoshop CS5

I used to be able to open .avi files in Photoshop just fine, but I’ve just tried opening one again after a couple of months and I can’t. It’s just black blankness. I have no problem with .mp4 files, but unfortunately, most of the videos I'm trying to make gifs out of are in .avi format.
Is it because I've updated QuickTime? Or is it that Adobe CS no longer supports .avi files? It says here that Photoshop CS6 supports the .avi format.
    My specs:
    OS X Mavericks 10.9.4
    Photoshop CS5.1

  • Unable to play Cineform avi files in Premiere Pro CS3

I am using Cineform NeoHD version 5.3.2 to convert the MXF files from my Canon XF300 into Cineform AVI.
Then I import these AVI files into Premiere Pro CS3 and here is where the problem begins.
Premiere is unable to play these Cineform files. All I get is about a second of audio, and a still frame of the video. This happens both in the source window, and also on the timeline.
The Cineform AVI files play perfectly fine when using Virtualdub for playback, but Windows media player behave just like Premiere.
Everything worked fine a week ago. Premiere appeared to use something called "ffdshow" to play the Cineform files, and I could edit without any trouble.
A few days ago, when I tried the same, that's when the problems came. Whenever I hit Play button in Premiere, a popup window came up, saying Premiere wanted to use ffdshow, and the options was "never", "no once", "yes once", "yes always".
When everything worked a week ago, I had to use the "yes always" option.
Now, it does not matter which option I use, Premiere will not play the Cineform files.
I did not make any changes to my computer between the day everything was okay, and when the problem appeared.
A Cineform representative suggested "ffdshow" is the troublemaker, so I uninstalled ffdshow and removed any traces of it I could find, but the same problem still exist.
    Then I uninstalled Cineform NeoHD
Uninstalled and reinstalled Production Premium CS3 suite
    Reinstalled Cineform NeoHD
Still same problem, nothing has changed.
It does not matter if I use 50i or 25p source files.
    My system: (Laptop)
    Windows Vista ultimate 64-bit
    Intel 2,66GHz quad core CPU
    4GB ram
    Nvidia Geforce 8800M GTX
3x internal 7200rpm harddrives set up with raid-0
    Anyone else experiencing this?
Any ideas what might be wrong?

dont know , but this stuff might fix your prob.. overwrite whatever ffdshow screwed up...
    cfrepair utility:
    http://www.siliconimaging.com/DigitalCinema/SiliconImaging_support.html
    cineform codec (neo player)
    http://estore.cineform.com/NeoPlayer.aspx
never used the cfrepair thing..but did install neoplayer which gave me the codec to use cs3 with cf raw files ( sample of cf raw at the si 2k site -- avi ext )
ps.... to keep overhead down on my computer I took the resulting cineform "player" out of my startup directory....as it wants to run in background when you install it...no need for that for my purpose of just getting the codec

  • Quicktime doesn't open AVI file with Perian installed

I have installed Perian but Quicktime X doesn't open AVI files for a week. I have repaired permissions. But Quicktime only plays the AVI file if I reboot the Mac. VLC always plays the file. The AVI codec is XVID. Quicktime doesn't play other formats such as FLV. I have deleted .plist files, com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX.plist. I have found other files(com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX.plist.0GH3f31, com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX.plist.0h9MBzV...) that I deleted also. Any idea? Thanks

And now ... surprisingly I view AVI files in Quicktime without Perian.
QT has very limited AVI support (file type and a few older codecs) built in. Most common codecs use by Windows users, however, require the additional support provided by Perian. If the AVI files are now playing in QT without Perian, then simply check the Inspector, Properties, or Info window to see which codecs are in your AVI file and you should be able to tell if they are among those supported "natively" by QT. Also note that this regaining of the ability to play your files may indicate a component conflict of some sort may have existed previously.

  • No link to the local .avi files after exporting Crystal report as .pdf

    Hello all,
    The overall scenario is like-
My application fires a query on SQL Server database and result of that query is stored in a Dataset. This dataset is set as a datasource to the Crystal report.  Now some, records (returned by the query) have .avi files(i.e. Event Videos which are stored on the local hard disk) associated with them. I have stored these .avi files in a specific path on local Hard disk say "C:/EventVideos/*.avi" .   I used a special format in these avi files name. (like - "EventVideo_1.avi" (This is for 1st event), "EventVideo_5.avi" (This is for 5th event)etc. to identify which avi is for which event. All events do not have avi files associated with them)
Now, I take one Text Object in crystal report. Using it's Format editor created a formula for hyperlink as -
          "file:///c:/EventVideos/EventVideo_" + {DataTable1.EventID} + ".avi" .
EventID is the field of dataset which has ID's (like 0, 1, 2,  3, 4 etc) of all resulted events. It is of a String data type.
Now when I export, my report as .xls, .rtf, .doc, I can open the avi files. When I bring cursor on this Text Object, cursor get change to Hand and after click on it avi file start to play.
But if I export it as .pdf, it does not contain the link for avi files. When I bring cursor on this Text Object , it does not change to Hand, and after click on it nothing happens. No video play.
I stick to this problem. What should be done in this case?
    Appreciate your help.
    Thanks in advance.

  • I was wondering if i plug a hard drive into my apple extreme will i be able to play avi file from it via an apple tv?

I am in the market for a TV media player. I have a lot of videos and photos on an external HDD and i would love to be able to play them on my big new TV.  I have been thinking about buying a "Buffalo home theatre" or a "WD TV Live". BUT..... I would like to stick to my Apple products and so was wondering if ...
    a) You can plug a HDD into an Apple Airport Extreme. I currently have an Airport Express but want to upgrade.
    b) If i plug a HDD into an Apple Airport Extreme, would I then be able to Access the avi and mkv files from my HDD and play them through Apple TV.
    Does that make sense?
I wish the apple TV had a usb port, that would solve my problem.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Yes you can plug a drive into an extreme, but the Apple TV will not play AVI (with noted exception) or mkv files.

  • Unable to open AVI files in Photoshop CS6

Unable to open AVI files in Photoshop CS6
I am running PS6 and want to open and edit AVI files. When I try to do that I get an error message saying "the video file cannot be opened" . This seems to apply to ALL avis - yet I can open and edit MP4, MMV etc. I installed Gspot to track whether it was a codec issue and when I try to open ANY file I get this error message : "Warning: DirectShow crashed while GSpot was attempting to obtain information about a codec.  This is usually due to damaged, misconfigured, conflicting, or poorly written codec drivers.  It is possible, perhaps even likely, that other media players will crash when they attempt to play this file as well, as most of them will also use DirectShow.  GSpot was able to intercept the crash, and has attempted to identify the codec or filter involved; uninstalling or reinstalling this codec or filter may solve the problem.  The codec was tentatively identified as:  C:\Windows\system32\imaadp32.acm Unknown video codec #11" I have NO idea where to go from here. I see a site to download the "imaadp32.acm"  codec but what about the "Unknown video codec #11". What the heck is that and what do I do about it. Any help would be appreciate, Cliff
ps I should add that the avi files DO open and play in Bridge. I have the latest Quicktime. Everything is up to date and PS and the computer is otherwise working perfectly !

    Thanks Curt and 'Mylenium'
I did re-set the prefs - but to no avail
I checked and my graphics driver and audio is all up to date.
No sure how to verify Windows Media Player's hardware acceleration options. I opened WMP Options /Perfformance tab and under Cd the DirX tab is checked.
Running Windows Vista - so does the same caution apply regarding a re-install of Windows Media Components and DirectX ?
Appreciate your help with this somewhat frustrating issue. I am converting some old 8mm film to avi with the hope of doing some edits then burning to DVD.

  • How to deal with scratchy sound in AVI file from BetaCam masters

Recently, I got out some BetaCam edit masters of videos I produced in the 1990s. The university instructional technology center transfered the masters to Mini-DV tape, then made AVI files from the Mini-DV tapes. The AVI files sound fine when I play them from my hard drive, but when I use the AVI files in Premiere Pro CS4 and 1.5, the sound is scratchy--sort of like a scratchy record. So then I got the Mini-DV tape and decided to import the program, playing it on my Canon GL1 camcorder and capturing it in PP CS4. But the sound is even worse. Please advise. These programs are too important to not be able to convert them to YouTube and DVD formats.

If things work OK in "programA" but not in "programB" (B being Premiere) that is usually a codec issue
AVI is simply a wrapper... what is the codec?
The first question at the end of this link has a link to the free GSPOT to find the codec
First, work through all of the steps here http://ppro.wikia.com/wiki/Troubleshooting
If your problem isn't fixed after you follow all of the steps, report back with the DETAILS asked for in the questions at the end of that link
