AVI files not optimized

Before getting my brand new MacPro, I was working my video montages with a PC, and using the software Scenalizer to import my files from the camcorder to the hard drive (ubcompressed). I may have now several hundreds of clips stored on various LaCie external hard drives.
Now with the new MacPro, when importing these clips in a project I get a message sayinig that these files are not optimized for FCP and I am recommended to use Media manager to create new copies.
But I cannot find this application in my machine. Can you help tracing it?
Furthermore, is there a big difference in quality between using these old avi files and using files captured through FCP? I found this software Scenalizer so practical and was wondering if such appplication can work effectively in the MAC OS environment?

Welcome to the forums!
will have a lot to learn and I expect to do so through this forum Allow me to caution you here. First, get the manuals and go throught them, check out the tutorials and go through them. Check back here often and read the posts. Then when you run into something you just can't figure out (we all do) post here.
FCP, can have a steep learning curve and moving from a PC (like I did) can make it more difficult. But Apple has provided you with a wealth of information in the manuals and a lot of questions can be answered there. Believe me you do not want to be the one here that gets all of the RTFM (Read the Freakin Manual) replies.
Again, welcome to the forums, we are glad that you are here and look forward to helping and learning along side you.

  • .AVI files not showng when RAW Only selected at import time

    Hi board,
When I am looking at my SD card from my Nikon D90 in the Import view of Aperture I have the 'Raw Only' option selected for the RAW+JPEG Pairs setting. This results in .AVI files not showing up in the browser. Meaning that when I believed I was importing all my photos in RAW and my movies, my movies were actually not even considered for importing. I realize (now) that RAW Only quite litteraly means RAW Only, but why do I have to select Both when importing to get my movies? Then I would have to weed out any eventual JPEGs that I might have taken but do not want to import.
I'm simply curious why .AVI are excluded together with .JPEGs. I did not consider this to be intuitive or clear to the user (since the setting is called RAW+JPEG Pairs, not mentioning that it could possibly exclude movies).
    Thanks!

Same here, with Aperture 3.2.2, OS 10.7.2
That definitely seems to be a bug to me; if either "JPEG only" or "RAW files only" is selected, the File Types selector is ignored, and no audio or video media are available in the import panel.

  • AVI Files not importing into CS4 from DVD

I have the DVD disk for Premiere Pro CS4 Classroom In A Book and all the avi files have only sound and when imported into Premiere Pro CS4 a missing codec error warning appears and the file will not import.
I have to say this problem only occurs with my 27" iMac and not at all with a MacBook Pro or a 20" iMac. I have tried repeatedly to copy the DVD to the 27" iMac but the problem still persists.
*+Now this is the really weird bit+:*
Using Screen Sharing from another mac, the files are normal. All other avi files are also normal on the 27" iMac.
I wondered if anyone can throw any light on this problem?

I tried a different converter and also changed the playback preferences -which was down at 44.1kHz- up to 96kHz as I know the hi res files are supposed to be up at this level.
Not sure if it was one or the other of your suggestions, or both, but it has worked, so many thanks for your quick and effective help!

  • Why do some AVI files not import into iMovie?

Some of my AVI video does not import into iMovie. When I try, it gives me a non-specific error message. Is there a way I can import it? Other AVI files import with no problem.

AVI is a container, not a format; the audio and video in an AVI may use any codec, and some codecs can't be used in Mac OS X. Installing Perian may help.

  • Some AVI files not working?

OK, let me try and sum this up.
using a cannon power shot i have filmed time lapse footage before and brought it into an older version of imove and gotten it to open on my old (white edged) imac. I now have imove11 and a new imac. these same timelapse AVI files will not play on quicktime now or register to be found for imovie even with an import. Regula speed AVI files will still download from the camera and work on quicktime and imove11.
now here is what is throwing me off.
Iphoto11 will import these same files and they will play problem free in there.
when i download them and open them through image capture they download no problem.
wheni double click to open in quicktime i get the can't be opened, may need additional software error.
i have made compilations in the past of these type AVI time lapse files so why can't i now?
    help please!

    Thank you very much.
But AVI and .mov will take much size than .dat files.
so its better to concentrate in .dat files also for JMF I think.
    Is it true.
I have a file of avi takes - 100mb for 3 min play of video
if u convert to .mov takes - 60-70mb for the same time of video.
I think you you have .dat files , for a movie of 2hours it takes only 1gb of size and can be shipped in two 500mb cds.
Please if you have any solution to reduce the avi file sizes please let me know.
    Thank you,
    Kiran

  • Avi files not imported

my older imac only imports photos, not avi files. on another intel imac, both photos and avi files import without any problem. any ideas? all software updates, iphoto, and OS are the same.

yes. the files are the same, and are short clips (less than 15 sec) from a digital camera. one machine imports them into the library, and the files are viewable with quicktime. the other machine doesn't import any of the files.

I've got a file captured from a BlackMagic Intensity Card that I want to import into a Premiere CS5.5 project, yet Premiere just shows it as a blank green video. The file plays back in VLC, QuickTime, etc. but not in Premiere! Anyone know why? Details of the file are below.

I use the card purely for external monitor previewing,  so I continue to use the native codecs.  However, you need to use a BM timeline preset to drive the output to the external monitor via the BM IP card.
Once editing is complete, it is a doddle to cut and paste all clips used in the sequence into a timeline using an Adobe preset, thereby losing the external monitoring.
A word of caution:  I am unable to upgrade to CS5.5.1 on my Win 7 64 system, and have it on reasonable authority that it is because I have the BM IP installed.  The upgrade is fine on my non-BM IP laptop!

  • JMF: How to play an  avi file NOT in a Frame...is this possible?

    -----Primary Task------
Using JMF, I want to play an avi video file NOT in a Frame
    ---------Why?----------
I want to play this avi file in a "non-decoration" container (ie. no Windows GUI, eg. Window/JWindow, Panel/JPanel)
    -------Problem---------
The MediaPlayer method in JMF 2.2.1e requires a Frame container, according to JMFUtil.java (eg. mediaplayer = jmapps.util.JMFUtils.createMediaPlayer)
    ------Questions--------
    1. Is there any way to change the method of JMFUtil.java to enable video files to play NOT in a Frame, like a Window or Panel?
    2. If not, do you know of any "tricks" to get rid of the Frame decorations?
    3. If not, any other solutions?

sigh... first read the API, then ask.
    Frame.setUndecorated(boolean) might help. http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.1/docs/api/java/awt/Frame.html#setUndecorated(boolean)

  • Newbie Q - nikon d300s avi files not recognised - wants codec.

I have just installed elements 9 and start a new project - i have some nikon d300a avi files on my hard disk and want to create a video. However when I try to import the files the program says this files are not recognised or the codec might be incorrect. What am I supposed to do now? thanks. Phil

Well, CODEC's are odd little things. Some will work fine in some programs, and some will not.
This ARTICLE goes into more detail, though cannot cover all possible CODEC's, or all possible NLE programs. When it gets down to why one might work with program ____, but not program ____, I call upon Chief Dan George, "sometimes the magic works, and sometimes it does not."
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS - did you install a driver for the Nikon, and/or any software provided? It could well be that Sony's Vegas has an MJPEG CODEC in its installation, but PrE just cannot use that. Normally, if one has the MJPEG CODEC from the camera mfgr. things work OK.

  • Some avi-files not playing on QuickTime Pro 7.0.4

I tried to play a few avi-file movies using QuickTime Pro 7.0.4 on my Mac OS X 10.4.4, but unfortunately, I keep getting the message: "Some necessary QuickTime software is missing. It may be available on the QuickTime Web site." After going on that site, I downloaded some of the available free software, but the problem remains. Playing the movies with a third-application like the VLC, works fine. I wish QuickTime Pro would have the same capabilities in playing avi files like other Players. Do you have an idea how I can solve the problem?
    Thanks for your support!

Thanks for all your help guys. I guess I will remain with the VLC for playing AVI files that donnot play on the QT Player as the VLC plays almost any movie file. I came across an interesting article regarding the subject:
    QuickTime: About Playing .AVI Files
Learn why an .AVI file may not play as expected in QuickTime Player.
AVI stands for Audio Video Interleave. The .AVI format is what is known as a container format. It specifies a way in which a file may contain audio and video data. It does not specify how that data is encoded. The encoding of audio and video data is specified in what are known as codecs. A codec (short for COmpressor/DECompressor) tells the computer how to decode the audio and video tracks that have been encoded within the .AVI file. QuickTime Player can use numerous codecs by default. You can also add additional codecs to extend QuickTime's features using plug-ins or third-party installations.
When QuickTime opens an .AVI file, it checks to see which codecs were used to encode the audio and video tracks within it. For example, an .AVI file may contain a video track encoded in the Cinepak codec and an audio track encoded with the ALaw 2:1 codec. If both the audio and the video were compressed using a codec that QuickTime can use, the file will play normally. If the audio or video or both were created using codecs that QuickTime cannot use, you may see a message like the following:
"QuickTime is missing the software needed to perform this operation. Unfortunately, it is not available on the QuickTime server"
    or
"You may experience problems playing a video track in "filename.avi" because the required compressor could not be found."
These messages are not an indication that anything is wrong with QuickTime Player.
Lists of audio and video codecs included with and supported by QuickTime are available from the QuickTime specifications page.
Using QuickTime Player, you may be able to determine which codec was used to compress an audio or video track:
    QuickTime 6 and earlier
Open the file in QuickTime Player.
From the Movie menu, choose Get Movie Properties.
From the left pop-up menu in the Properties window, choose Sound Track or Video Track.
From the right pop-up menu, choose Format. The Format section shows the codec.
    QuickTime 7
Open the file in QuickTime Player.
From the Window menu, choose Show Movie Info. The codec is listed next to Format.
If the .AVI file is encoded using a codec that is not included with QuickTime, you might be able to find and add that codec so QuickTime can play media encoded with it. Contact the party that publishes or distributes the codec to see if a QuickTime version is available. Many third-party QuickTime components are available on the QuickTime components page.

  • QuickTime avi files not playing

I am trying to play an avi file on QuickTime but get the following message:

  • Avi files not burning to DVD

I have been exporting windows avi files from premiere cs3 to the desktop, then importing them as either assests or timelines in encore cs3. It plays fine when i preview it, but when i try to burn it to DVD, once it has finished 'transcoding', and begins to write the DVD, without fail, it finds an error in one of the timelines and stops. It says 'internal software error, line (something)'. Anyway, i keep having to go back to encore cs2 as i cant get cs3 to burn to a dvd.
If anyone can help me out at all, or has any ideas it would be much appreciated.
    Cheers!

You do NOT want a high burn speed... higher speed = more chance for errors
To Burn Error Proof DVDs (Well, close to error proof!)
Use the SLOWEST possible burn option your burner will allow in Encore, since it is much better to take a bit more time burning the disc than it is to burn "fast" and have a disc that won't play
Set the VIDEO portion of the transcoding options to a Maximum of 7,000 so your burned disc will have a better chance at playing in desktop players (which support burned discs, if at all, only as an "after thought" of the DVD specification)
Use AC3 or PCM audio transcode settings for best player compatibility (some discussion of MPEG audio not being supported by all players, especially for NTSC discs)
Buy and use Taiyo Yuden (or Verbatim?) brand blank discs

You found the key for me. The codec turned out to be Cineform Visually Perfect (right clicko on the file, "properties").
