AVI Files on QT won't play Audio

Hi All,
Sorry for the noobie question but I just got my iMac up and running and have found that some (not all) of my AVI files will not play normally in Quicktime. Two of the AVI files will play the video fine but there is no audio to them. Is something related to a CODEX? Or is that something I only have to worry about in Windows?

Is something related to a CODEX?
An AVI may contain audio and video of any format, and if the Mac doesn't have the codec to play the audio track, it will have no sound. Try installing Perian.

Why are my .avi files extracted using PE3 only playing audio when using Windows Media Player?

I extracted a lot of my old movies using PE3 that came from my 8MM camera. They played fine on XP.
I now have Windows7 64 bit and when I play them in Windows Media Player, they only play the sound.
I'm guessing that this is a codec issue.
Should I re-extract them using a different product that uses a more standard codec?

It depends on your workflow. So we'll need more details.
How did you digitize the video from your 8mm camcorder? Many devices capture as AVIs, but do so while using codecs that aren't universally playable. Also, do make sure you've got the latest version of Quicktime on your new computer. It can add some important video functionality to your computer.
You say you used Premiere Elements to "extract" your movie. How did you do this? Did you use a device like the ADS Pyro AV Link or Grass Valley Canopus AVDC?
Finally, are you trying to play the raw files or did you create a project with them in Premiere Elements and then Export/Share your video? And, if the latter, which output settings did you choose?
Meantime, try downloading VLC Player to your new computer and see if it can play the files. It is a much better player than Windows Media Player (or Quicktime Player, for that matter). And let us know yoru results.

What exactly is your problem? Is it, (a) your Mac doesn't read your external disk, or, (b) you can't retrieve your videos, or, (c) you can't play them, or, (d) you were able to play them at one point, but not any more.
What version of Mac OS X are you using, what app are you trying to play your videos with, what happens when you do, and what error messages, if any, do you get?

IOS 6.0.1 Safari won't play audio files. Error: "Cannot play audio file."

I recently updated my iPad to iOS 6.0.1, now Safari won't play audio files in any format. Error: "Cannot play audio file." Previously, it worked fine. I tried downloading and using GoogleChrome and Opera Mini, and these also won't play audio. What's up??

Solved the problem. It seems that once iOS 6.0.1 installed, it caused all of my browsers to mishandle audio files. When I reset the iPad, that cleared up the problem.
Before upgrading to iOS 6, my browsers would "autoplay" the sound files. After iOS 6, "autoplay" is disabled so you have to manually click play to play them.
Nonetheless, everything is working fine again except for "autoplay," which I can live with.

AVI is a legacy file container originated by Microsoft back in 1992 and which has not been officially supported for more than a decade. Like the container, many of the codecs commonly used to create AVI content are also "legacy" compression formats most often supported on PC/Windows platforms. In fact, some codecs have never been transcoded for Mac use. Of those that have, many never made the transition to Mac OS X or the transition to Intel-based platforms. Those codecs that are still supported on the Mac can normally be found in the avi to quicktime converter available as an online download. While some common AVI compression formats may be supported by the QT X Player app, QT 7 currently provides a more compatible AVI playback environment for most "legacy" compression formats. If the codec(s) used in your AVI files are not supported by the avi to quicktime converter for QT use, you can try the VLC media player which may still support more esoteric compression formats. If VLC does not support the files, the normal approach is to discover which specific audio and/or video codecs were used to create the file and perform an Internet search to see if a compatible Mac component is available for download.

Elements 11 won't play audio mp3 from within slide show

I've created a slide show and have attempted to insert an audio mp3 file. Audio file shows that it has been added to slide show but it wil not play.
I've added the mp3 multiple ways, by using the add media -- audio from element organizer as well as by add media ---audio from file but it won't play
MP3 plays fine when I click on it from the organizer.
I've tested the mp3's that came with elements 11 and they play fine. What's the deal?

Is it from within the iTunes library? Try deleting album art and then adding the track again.

The above was a quote and AME is not necessary. From the Timeline selected Ctrl-M brings up the Export window. There select "AVI" and under Video Codec below select "None"

Flash won't play audio. Please help!

Flash won't play audio in Firefox, Chrome, Safari etc. Downloaded audio plays just fine but I can't stream any flash audio content. Does anybody have any solutions? Any help would be appreciated.

I'm experiencing the same problem on Snow Leopard 10.6.8. If I go to YouTube, I don't get audio. Other websites are fine (I'm not seeing a pattern on exactly which sites). What I had to do was uninstall Adobe Flash (I used the Adobe Uninstall utility). Now I have audio on YouTube, but now I'm getting a lot of 'missing plugin' messages from other websites. I've opened

Here's some more info. The *.mts files from Panasonec GH2 play fine in VLC and WMP. When I tested oher edited files, originating from mts files, and edited in PP-CS5.5 and exported as mp4 files, the audio and video in the mp4 files play just fine in Bridge CS6. Also the audio in mov and avi files play fine in Bridge. Just to see if it had something to do with the file structure on the capture card, I recorded some video with audio and played it directly from the capture card and the audio still wouldn't play. So, it appears that Bridge CS6 currently can't handle the audio in the Panasonid mts wrapper unless I were to transcode it to mp4 or mov, etc. I'm concerned that this might result in some loss of quality, possibly baloon file size, and waste more time than it's worth.
My work around to date is to associate mts files with wmp in Windows 7 (Control Panel\Programs\Default Programs\Set Associations) so that when I double-click on the mts files in bridge, both the audio and video will play OK in wmp and I can move forward.

Checking the forums, I found threads that point to using Streamclip. I tried it and got this message:

ITunes won't play audio with mp4 or mov video

I have wasted many frustrating hours now trying to get iTunes to play mp4 and mov videos but can't get any sound. A few months back it was working fine. Tried ALL the suggested fixes like uninstalling, updating and checking all the MIME/File boxes. When I went back to QT 7.5 and played the files independently of iTunes everything was fine. Quicktime 7.6, 7.67 & 7.7.1 do not play the audio independently or under iTunes and of course iTunes won't play video with QT less than 7.7.1. The same mp4 videos uploaded to my iPOD work fine. I currently have iTunes 10.5.3.3 installed on a Windows XP SP3 on an e-machines pc. Ideas please!!

I got this problem as well. Seems as soon as I moved to version 7.6 it stopped playing my video audio. My music plays fine, but my video audio is non-existant. It's not the file itself because I can play off my iPod (though not off my iPod through iTunes) just fine. I've done all the suggestions above and NOTHING has worked. Is there anything else we can find???

FCO 10.2 won't play audio. Was fine in 10.1.4, projects open fine, the meter shows it playing, made all correct connections in Inspector, but no sound to system?

Since upgrading to FCP 10.2 from 10.1.4, I'm now not able to get sound even though it shows it's playing in the meter. The clip is a .wav 48k, I have highlighted the audio, gone into the Inspector, chosen Audio, in Pan Mode I've chosen Stereo Left/Right and made sure Stereo is selected on the file in the Channel Configuration. Solo does not help nor is skimming available.
All other audio apps are fine including Quicktime.
Also, I triedstarting a new Project and Importing audio, but the same result. Please let me know what I'm missing.
Is there a way to rollback to 10.1.4 to finish this project?

In reading through the posts, I see you have had answers to many issues so perhaps you help with this :
In 10.1.4, I had used an FX Factory effect for scrolling credits and now it won't play back on 10.2. If I highlight the clip, I have the ability to edit the text, but it won't play- any help is appreciated.
Is there a way to rollback to 10.1.4 to finish this project?

Imported AVI file losing *some* of it's audio

I have number of .avi files of gameplay recordings made using software called Bandicam. I can play them in Media Player etc. and they sound fine.
However, when I import them to Premier, I can only hear one of the audio tracks that was recorded - the track that records the gameplay audio, without my commentary. When I recorded, the Bandicam software crashed and I had to run the files through something called "Bandifix" which completes the recording and makes it watchable and audible inside a player. However, I can only hear one track on the file inside Premier, but when I check properties for that file, it DOES say that there are 2 audio tracks, just that one of them is 0KB in size.
Any ideas?

0KB means there is no audio.

AVI file shows just white screen with audio, help

I created a video on an old sony vaio, before i came to my senses and bought a mac. I have got the video off of the old laptop, but it won't play on quicktime now. I have tried some converters and what not, but it still won't play on my mac at all. does anyone know any ways that seem to work converting AVI files or anything? i really want to play this video.

Open the avi (even though it doesn't show video) and then use "Show MovieInfo" in the Windows menu of QT Player. That will tell you what codec was used in making the video. If it was an Indeo compressor you will not be able to view it in OS X unless you can run the Classic environment. Indeo codecs for Classic
If they are not Indeo videos you may be able to play them in OS X by iinstalling the decompressors from these sites:
