.avi files playback slowly

I recorded a speech that I now have to develop in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4, and it is an 18 minute video that advances 1 frame per minute.  In 18 minutes, it only goes through 18 frames of video and 6 minutes of the speech.
Why is my video so bugged?  I recorded from a Canon SD750 in the .avi format.

Convert that stuff to something that is editable, like MS DV AVI type2 and PCM/WAV 48 KHz stereo. Use Google for a suitable converter.
BTW, AVI is not a format but just a container. What is inside is relevant.

  • Viewing AVI files

I've tried using the AVI viewing example that comes with Vision ("read avi example") but it views the AVI file very slowly - often slowing down to a frame rate of about 1/second.  All of the AVI viewing examples do this.  It doesn't matter which codec is used in the file or the frame resolution.  My CPU usage exceeds 50% at this point.  Uncompressed AVI files are viewed ALMOST at the correct frame rate with a CPU usage of about 25%.  Can anyone tell me what's going on?
I'm running Labview 2009 with the Vision Development module installed, on a dual core pentium with 4 gigs or ram.
I have no problem playing AVI files with other programs.
    Thanks.

Thanks for the reply.  I can play AVI files with other players without any problems, so I don't think it's the hard drive.  When playing AVIs, the cpu usage is very low, but when playing then with Labview the cpu usage is very high and the frame rate drops down to almost 2 frames per second no matter what vi I'm using.  Loading the whole AVI into memory is completely impractical and wouldn't solve the read problem.
I've tried converting the AVIs to many different codecs but the problem is still the same.  Is there any way to specify which decompression codec IMAQ AVI Read Frame uses?   I'm wondering if it's just using an inefficient decoder instead of one of my other installed decoders like FFDShow.
Splitting the reading process from the viewing / analysis process also wouldn't solve the problem since it seems to take about 15 seconds to read in 1 second of video anyway and it is overtaxing my cpu still.
You can always use ActiveX to read the AVI with whatever player you wish into LabVIEW but I don't think this would be a satisfying solution. I am surprised you can't get your AVI to play correctly in LabVIEW :-o
How did you create this AVI? Can you post it here or make it available somewhere?

  • Arbitrary limit for  playback of avi files QT 7.04

QT pro player stops without any error indication after about 1.11GB of a 1.37GB avi file. Everything is fine up to that point. VLC plays the whole file to its end.
I saw a post re a 2.0 GB limit. Anyone having the same proplem??
    Thanks, Harley

I would wish that people stop using the .avi container.
I suspect a broken time stamp (time code) in your .avi file. Very common problem caused by cutting or pasting to some formats and codecs.
QuickTime Player is very rule "dependent". While other players handle the broken time stamp issue QuickTime Player stops playback when it is told the "end" of the file has been reached.
MPEG Streamclip (free) can repair broken time stamps.
The only file size limit imposed is the formatting used on the hard drive. More modern formatting schemes (HFS or HFS+) have a nearly limitless file size.

  • AVI Files import audio fine, video does not playback correctly

Premiere Pro CS4 imports my AVI file's audio, but video playback does not match up; that is, the audio will playback until finish, but it appears that the video portion only reaches the third or fourth frame of the video! All other video formats import just fine.
This issue did not occur in CS3.
    I use Windows XP SP3.

Thanks to everyone for your responses. I solved the problem by installing the proper codec (LEAD MJPEG).
Now I have another problem -- when scrubbing through videos, it seems as if the audio doesn't follow the cursor. That is, if I scroll to the MIDDLE of a video, I hear audio from the BEGINNING of the video, as if I had just paused and resumed.
What could be the problem here?? This appears to happen for DivX movies, which I actually don't use often. But still, this would be a nice problem to solve.

  • How to make front row remember playback position of avi files?

    Hi,
Is there a way to make front row remember the last playback position of an avi file?
It can be frustrating having to forward to the last platback position when resuming viewing a media file.
    nj

If you load the file into iTunes then Front Row will then remember its last playback position.
Not ideal I know, but it appears to be the only workaround currently.

  • Strange playback trouble with some avi files

I downloaded a whole season of a tv show in avi format (mpeg layer 3, 48khz, 29.97 fps). Most of the files play fine, but several of them seem corrupt in a way I've never seen before.
They don't generate an error message ... but they stop playing for several seconds at a time, the audio goes off or out of sync, and the entire picture comes and goes, in a way that I can only describe as a mix of pixelation, jpeg-like edge artifacts, and acid trip-like traces and afterimages. Needless to say, it's hard to watch.
I tried exporting the movies from QT pro. No help. And of course I restarted quicktime several times. Other movies continue to play fine.
Any thoughts? Is it possible to fix these files or are they gone?

The format of file you gave is just for audio part, you didn't give us what kind of codec the .avi file have?
And it's nothing to do with QuickTime Pro I cam assume you that.
It probably has broken inside the .avi file somewhere.

  • Can I use my 32c100u to playback .avi files from my computer? if so, how?

I have a 32c100u  LCD  HDTV  that I bought in 2010.  Is there any way I can use it to play back .avi files that I have on my computer?
    I can't figure this out.
    Thanks for any enlightenment.

Did you set it to copy full-resolution photos??? If so, enable your iPod for disk use, open my computer, click on your iPod, and open the pictures folder. You can just drag them from there. If you didn't, use a program such a CopyPod Photo (google it) to copy photos from your iPod. Note that the files will only be the same resolution as your iPod screen (320x240) and not worth using for anything else. If you want to use it for sharing, definitely go with the full-res option. It is at the bottom of the photos pane in the iPod screen in iTunes.

  • Black Screen in viewer but Audio plays back - AVI file

Hello, I am a real novice but am slowly learning video editing (trying to graduate from iMovie to FCP).
    I am working on a Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5 / Leopard / OS X 10.5.6 / and running FCP 6.0.1
I have imported AVI files to FC (taken from a Flip camera) and once I drag the file to the viewer the only playback I get is audio. (Inserting to canvas doesn't change anything).
I have also tried importing to QuickTime Pro 7.6 and Mpeg Streamclip (which I thought would do the trick for sure - I figured I could convert the file and try again in FCP) but also only got audio playback. I thought perhaps I needed the DC30 Xact Driver from Streamclip but it is not supported on the G5s.
The last thing I tried was downloading mplayer osx which actually played the video!! but the audio was too fast (everyone sounded like a chipmunk).
I really want to play around with the video in FCP so what can I do to the files to make that possible?
Sorry to be so longwinded and thanks.

As you will learn the more you get into it, FCP does not like certain file formats. AVI and M2V being a couple. The reason you're only getting audio playback is because you are missing a codec. Try the perian codec pack which is a free tool that has alot of codecs in it. That might help. Also, the reason you can't convert it to another format is the same reason you can't play it. If the computer can't see/read/interpret the file then it can't change it's format for you. Your other option is to convert the AVI files on a PC if you have one to Apple's preferred format .MOV
    Hope this helps!

  • Unable to play Cineform avi files in Premiere Pro CS3

I am using Cineform NeoHD version 5.3.2 to convert the MXF files from my Canon XF300 into Cineform AVI.
Then I import these AVI files into Premiere Pro CS3 and here is where the problem begins.
Premiere is unable to play these Cineform files. All I get is about a second of audio, and a still frame of the video. This happens both in the source window, and also on the timeline.
The Cineform AVI files play perfectly fine when using Virtualdub for playback, but Windows media player behave just like Premiere.
Everything worked fine a week ago. Premiere appeared to use something called "ffdshow" to play the Cineform files, and I could edit without any trouble.
A few days ago, when I tried the same, that's when the problems came. Whenever I hit Play button in Premiere, a popup window came up, saying Premiere wanted to use ffdshow, and the options was "never", "no once", "yes once", "yes always".
When everything worked a week ago, I had to use the "yes always" option.
Now, it does not matter which option I use, Premiere will not play the Cineform files.
I did not make any changes to my computer between the day everything was okay, and when the problem appeared.
A Cineform representative suggested "ffdshow" is the troublemaker, so I uninstalled ffdshow and removed any traces of it I could find, but the same problem still exist.
    Then I uninstalled Cineform NeoHD
Uninstalled and reinstalled Production Premium CS3 suite
    Reinstalled Cineform NeoHD
Still same problem, nothing has changed.
It does not matter if I use 50i or 25p source files.
    My system: (Laptop)
    Windows Vista ultimate 64-bit
    Intel 2,66GHz quad core CPU
    4GB ram
    Nvidia Geforce 8800M GTX
3x internal 7200rpm harddrives set up with raid-0
    Anyone else experiencing this?
Any ideas what might be wrong?

dont know , but this stuff might fix your prob.. overwrite whatever ffdshow screwed up...
    cfrepair utility:
    http://www.siliconimaging.com/DigitalCinema/SiliconImaging_support.html
    cineform codec (neo player)

never used the cfrepair thing..but did install neoplayer which gave me the codec to use cs3 with cf raw files ( sample of cf raw at the si 2k site -- avi ext )
ps.... to keep overhead down on my computer I took the resulting cineform "player" out of my startup directory....as it wants to run in background when you install it...no need for that for my purpose of just getting the codec

  • How do I get Streamclip AVI files that were saved without first installing Quicktime ALternative 1.81 to play in Premiere Elements 11?

I had Hi-8 "home movie" tapes transferred to mp4 files. To pull many short clips from these long files, I used MPEG Streamclip 1.2. The default save for these short clips was mp4. Either they didn't work in Adobe Premiere Elements 11 or I thought they wouldn't -- I can't recall now -- so I saved each clip as AVI. These AVI files won't play at all in Premier Elements. I Googled for advice and found that I needed to convert to Quicktime Alternate 1.81. I fear this had to be done before I saved the clips, but I didn't realize that. Still, I just now uninstalled Quicktime 7 and installed Quicktime 1.81, then tried converting the AVI clips files, first back to MP4 (didn't work at all in PE11) and then to MOV (only played audio). The AVI files play fine in Windows Media Player and VLC.  All I have are the original files saved as AVI in Streamclip. Is there any way to get these to play and be editable in Premiere Elements 11? I've attached a jpeg capture of a gspot readout for one of these files. THANKS!

Glad that you finally sorted out what you were doing and discovered DV AVI.
In your particular situation Prism would serve your purposes of generating the DV AVI 4:3 since your footage is 640 x 480. However, for others with different footage, the free Prism shortcoming is that it cannot offer DV AVI widescreen 16:9; whereas MPEG Streamclip can do the job for 16:9 as well as 4:3.
QuickTime Alternative 1.8.1 that does come with the MPEG Streamclip's required MPEG2 Playback Component (free) also meets the Premiere Elements requirement for QuickTime installed on computer with Premiere Elements to work. This works in spite of the fact that QuickTime Alternative 1.8.1 is not the latest version of the regular QuickTIme.
In post 2 of the following older thread, I detail the use of Prism (for 4:3) and MPEG Streamclip (for 4:3 and 16:9) to produce the DV AVI file.

Any questions or need clarification, please do not hesitate to ask.
Moving forward, do not use AVCHD (MPEG4 AVC/H.264) or H.264.avi in Premiere Elements. It is not supported.

  • AVI Files not importing into CS4 from DVD

I have the DVD disk for Premiere Pro CS4 Classroom In A Book and all the avi files have only sound and when imported into Premiere Pro CS4 a missing codec error warning appears and the file will not import.
I have to say this problem only occurs with my 27" iMac and not at all with a MacBook Pro or a 20" iMac. I have tried repeatedly to copy the DVD to the 27" iMac but the problem still persists.
*+Now this is the really weird bit+:*
Using Screen Sharing from another mac, the files are normal. All other avi files are also normal on the 27" iMac.
I wondered if anyone can throw any light on this problem?

  • Workflow question - fastest workflow from AVI files to DVD?

I have recently purchased my first Mac (it is fantastic!). I am currently experimenting with both '08 and '06 iMovie.
Right now my main priority is creating individual DVD's of each of my tapes that I have previously captured via WinDV on an XP system. Those tapes are stored, each clip separately, via AVI files on external hard disks.
Now I would like to, as quickly as possible, use either version of iMovie to burn a DVD that simply includes all the clips from a given tape capture. The plan is that these will be simply playable versions (a playable backup, if you will) of all the clips on each tape - I'll come back later and do edits to create "finished" DVD's.
Any suggestions as to the most efficient and quickest way to create the DVD's? (I've downloaded Streamclip also, but am not sure whether that will help me out at this point or not)
    Thanks in advance.

Any suggestions as to the most efficient and quickest way to create the DVD's?
The most efficient work flow in terms of application use would likely be iMovie HD here. Assuming your AVI files are "playback" and "conversion" compatible with QT, then they will be automatically converted during file level import for use in whatever project compression format you create for editing. In addition, this work flow offers more in the way of "effects" if desired and allows you to chapter files for iDVD use internally rather than having to go through GarageBand. On the other hand, if you are working with very short source files requiring little or no editing and a minimum of titles, transitions and/or chaptering, then iMovie '08 may be faster in terms of actual editing speed. Both applications have their own strengths and weaknesses and you should probably try a test project with both so that in the future you can select the proper one according to the needs of any given project.
