hi all
i'm trying to create an iDVD project from some films

iDVD either directly or through iMovieHD they grow to
about 10 times the original file size
They get converted with an Apple Intermediate CODEC to a form much like DV stream. As you have observed, it is far less compressed than your .AVI files (keep in mind the DV video is about 13 GB per hour of running time).
and lose the audio. can any one help me
I have the same problem with some of my .AVI files. I finally settled on ffmpegX at http://homepage.mac.com/major4/ to convert my AVI files to DV form for use in iMovie/iDVD.

There are many different CODECS used to compress the video in .AVI files - some are Mac QT compatable - some are not.
I have a small digital movie camera that produces .AVI files compresed in DivX format. Since upgrading to Mac OS 10.4 and QuickTime 7, the ONLY way I have found to use these files in iMovie/iDVD is to convert them to DV stream files using ffmpegX at http://homepage.mac.com/major4/
To find out the form of video compression used in your .AVI files, open one in QuickTime and select Window>Show Movie Info. What video format is shown?

  • AVI Files for iDVD ((QUESTION))

    Hello,
I took some digital video on my new digial camera.
The video files are AVI. I am able to play them via quicktime on my mac mini with no problem.
The issue I am having is when I want to burn the files into iDVD.. I get error messages. I can import the files fine.. Its just wen I get to the rendering phase I get an error.
Do I need to convert the AVI files to .MOV? What must I do?
    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
    Sincerely,
    D.

Not all .AVI files us the same CODECs (AVI is really just a file 'wrapper') and I've have very mixed results using AVI files directly.
I use ffmpegX at http://homepage.mac.com/major4/ to convert my AVI files to DV Stream for use in iMovie/iDVD.

  • Converting .avi files to iDVD

First time using anything like this and I'm pretty lost in the dark. I downloaded some .avi files off of limewire. I'm planning to burn them to a dvd, or have them in at least something that quicktime can play. Is there anyway to do this? Basically I'm trying to get some dvd's put together for someone for a gift and I'm not sure if what I'm doing is right.
any help at all would be great

When you're playing the clip in iMovie, the screen shows black for the entire length of the clip? Try opening the clip with Quicktime. If it stil displays black, that means that there's no video there. iDVD will encode whatever the video is. If it is just 39 minutes of "black", then iDVD will turn 39 minutes of "black" in .avi format to 39 minutes of "black" in mp2 format and burn that to the DVD. Now, if you can get the video to display (assuming that it's there), then iDVD will encode that. To put it simply, whatever you can see, iDVD will encode it.
    Hope this Helps

  • AVI files and idvd

I have some AVI video files that I was hoping to be able to string together and burn onto a DVD.
Now, being a complete newcomer to iDVD I haven't a clue where to start. First of all, I need to know if it's even possible and secondly what I need to do.
The next thing I was wondering was whether in iDVD, all films have to be played on some sort of back ground or whether I could set it so it's the film on it's own without the... disctractions of a background.
If anyone could help I'd really appreciate it

The next thing I was wondering was whether in iDVD, all films have to be played on some sort of back ground or whether I could set it so it's the film on it's own without the... disctractions of a background.
This is a common misconception to iDVD newcomers. And the answer is an empahtic: NO, you do not play your file as part of the background.
The backgrounds you speak of, called "themes" in iDVD, are there for you to create a customized menu for the DVD -- NOT to play your movie. You CAN drop a movie into the drop-zones of themes that support them in order to customize the menu with your own movie shorts -- but this is not the way to show your feature movies. Again, this is there for you to create customized DVD menus.
When dropping your feature movie onto the iDVD window be sure to avoid the drop-zones (despite the "drop movie here" wording). If you do it correctly, you will get a thumbnail button or text button (depending upon the theme settings) rather than adding it to the theme background.

  • Getting Avi files into iDVD

    Is it possible.
The files open in quicktime Pro. But it just has a white screen all the way through.
They open and play fine in VLC.
Is there a program I can use to convert to a compatiable format.
    Cheers

    You'll need:
MPEG Streamclip 1.5.1 (free) and the MPEG-2 Playback Component ($20 from Apple).

  • Playing avI files on QuickTime

I'm new to Mac and QuickTime and I can't open some AVI files in QuickTime that I downloaded. I want to use the downoaded AVI files in iDVD to create a DVD movie.

    1. I think VLC, 3ivx® D4 CODEC, MPlayer these player all can help U to play avi on mac, and if you still want to play avi files on quicketime, maybe you should install *_DivX for Mac CODEC_*.
    2. If you want to use these avi to create a DVD Movie, Just follow this guide :

  • DVD Burning. avi. file

I have an avi. file. Can this be burnt straight to a DVD (using Disk Utility) to be played on my home DVD player or does it have to be converted to another file before burning please?

AVI is a video codec and you cannot use disk utility to put this onto a DVD disk as a stand alone playable movie, however there are a few things you can do. Some unbranded and branded DVD players now play loads of different format video files such as AVI and Divx does yours do this, you may have to only drag the avi file to a DVD disk and just copy it. I use leopard and i just drag the AVI file to iDvd and this works ok for me, you have a dual opp system so OSX will do this for you.

  • Using WindowsDV  .avi files in iMovie and iDVD

I'm about to buy a Mac after using PCs for many years. I'm still deciding whether to buy an iMac 20", upgrade the Ram and use an external firewire drive or to get a Mac Pro and use internal drives. Initially I'll use iMovie and iDVD and I have some questions regarding using files I've already created on my PC. Up until now I've mainly been using Ulead Video Studio 10 and Ulead DVD Workshop. DVD Workshop does not do 16:9 menus and has now been discontinued and I've been impressed with iMovie and iDVD when I've seen it in Apple stores.
I have some unedited 16:9 .avi files that I've captured from my Panasonic GS-400 camcorder as well as some already edited .avi and .mpg files. Will iMovie and iDVD recognise .avi DV files when accessed through my network or copied onto the Mac hard drive? I'll load unedited clips into iMovie for editing but anything that's already edited I'd like to put straight into iDVD, add chapters and make a menu etc.
Is this going to work easily or will I have to convert the files to an apple compatible format?
Thanks for any advice you can offer.
    Ken
      Windows XP Pro

Hi Ken and welcome to Apple!
You should not have a major problem. The AVI files should (repeat should) be recognized by iMovie. If not, conversion should (I love the certainty of that word!) be easy.
An iMac will do all you ask, but I recommend not less that 1GB of RAM.
At this stage, go get your iMac, and try to import the AVI files into iMovie. If that is not successful post back!
Remember: iMovie expects to be 'fed' by digital video through a firewire connection.
Any more questions, we are here to help!

  • Converting .avi files for use in iDVD

I have multiple .avi files that I'd like to add to a DVD using iDVD. These files are in their original format at 30 kb/sec and not compressed at all so they are HUGE...totaling almost 20G.
What is the best way to convert these files so that they can be imported into iDVD and fit on a single DVD. The files would be about an hour and a half playing time so I am hoping that can be done. I realize quality may be compromised but I'm willing to lose a little bit.

Roxio Toast is your best option IMO but if you want to stay within the iApps then you'll first have to add the avi files to iMovie => iDvd. That or use a third part app likeMpegStreamclip (free download):
I suggest you do not exceed 120 mins playback for SL Dvd-R
Hope this helps but if not just come on back.

  • IDVD and AVI files. (No sound)

I have a couple clips in .avi and they play well in quicktime with the Perian program but when i add them into an iDVD project I only get the video and I don't get sound. Is there a program like Perian for iDVD or some sort of plug-in to play the .avi file's audio?

Hopefully this helps answer your question:
    http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MPEG_StreamClip
Also take a look within the Help Menu for iDvd'08 to see which formats work best:
Video and image formats that work with iDVD
You can use these movie and graphic formats in iDVD:

Most video or image files supported by QuickTime (see the list of unsupported QuickTime formats below)

    16:9 widescreen formats

AAC, MP3, and AIFF audio files

Any format from iMovie: DV, high-definition video (HDV), MPEG-2 SD, MPEG-2 SD, MPEG-4 SD, MPEG-4 HD, and AVCHD
High definition video is converted to work with the format of your project. iDVD supports using 16:9 widescreen video; therefore, when your DVD plays on a DVD player that supports widescreen format, the footage appears in its original aspect ratio.
The following video and image formats are not supported in iDVD:

    Copyrighted or protected videos.

Movies saved in thousands of colors using the “none” compression setting in iMovie.

48-bit color images (16 bits per color). To use source files in one of these formats in iDVD, save them in a supported format.

Aurora uncompressed files. For best results, export Aurora clips as DV-format video before importing them into iDVD.

QuickTime VR, MPEG-1 or MPEG-2, Flash, streaming or encrypted movies, or QuickTime spanned movies. You can’t add MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 files to an iDVD project because they don’t contain standard video tracks.

QuickTime Fast Start movies. (Fast Start movies are intended for Internet playback.) When saving a QuickTime movie for use with iDVD, click the Options button in the QuickTime Export dialog and make sure that the “Prepare for Internet Streaming” checkbox is not selected.
NOTE: You can add any type of file to the DVD-ROM portion of your DVD so that viewers can copy the file to a computer. Viewers can access these files only when viewing the DVD in a computer, not a DVD player connected to a TV.

  • Why won't iDVD burn my .avi files... it used to?

i have files ending in .avi that i want to burn to a DVD, in order to watch them on television.
i throw them into the iDVD and the preview shows nothing but a blank screen.
iDVD used to burn my .avi files.
i have converted them to .mp4 / .mpg / .mov... but nothing seems to work.
sometimes, throwing a .mp4 file into iDVD nothing happens at all, or it will say unsupported / unrecognized file.
the only time it did work was when i used a program to convert a file to .mp4, but now it has a huge watermark across the picture.
why all of a sudden does it not work?

    Hi
If QuickTime-player opens Your .avi files then start Inspector (cmd+I) and read
    Video Format/Codec: nnnnnnnnnnn
    What does it read ?
What did an old .avi file that worked - read ?

  • IDVD: Fitting a large AVI file on DVD

I have a large (2.5Gb) avi file that I want to burn on dvd using iDVD, and though I am using a dual-layer dvd, it is still not large enough to accommodate that video (I'm exceeding the capacity by about 500 Mb). Is there an option in iDVD to "fit" the video on the media you've got? I'm ok with (hopefully small) quality loss.

First off, the size of your AVI file in GB doesn't matter to iDVD. What DOES count is the running time in minutes.
On a double-layer DVD the maximum content length is about 120 minutes in iDVD.
iDVD doesn't offer an option to force fit the content to the media. I suggest you look at Roxio's Toast Titanium which does offer such an option. You might also want to look at the free BURN at http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/

  • Idvd converts my 16:9 avi files into 4:3

i created movies in adobe with out put settings of dv-pal 16:9 avi and in idvd it continually alters them into 4:3..i have checked all the relevant aspect windows...is this a avi issue what is most secure file format for idvd to handle most of my movies are in widescreen

I'm having a similar issue. When you say don't export as an avi - I don't know that I necessarily know how it's exporting. I click on the menu and click share to media browser, then I import it into iMovie.
Need answer rather quickly as I'm trying to create a disc in 16:9 for other people.
Here's what I posted in another thread:
Here's my ordeal (and it's similar to the original issue) - I committed to making a video with pics to music for the baseball team. I used iMovie 08 to do this, and I'm quite pleased with the results. I then exported to use in iDVD, burned a test, and played on the good ol' HDTV.
    Bleh.
My biggest issue is that the pictures look horrible. My second biggest issue is that although I created this in a 16:9 format, the DVD is 4:3. Everything is blurry and the titles are cut off because it's no longer wide format.
How can I 1) ensure the quality is at least better than it currently is and 2) kick it back to 16:9 for others to view on their respective HDTVs? Again, I'll review the iDVD prefs, but I'm at a loss - +and+ out of time.
    Thanks in advance.
