AVI files wont encode

I'm working on a project that requires me to capture video from 3/4 inch analogue tape. Some of the project was shot on DV format and was in raw form. Here's my work flow.
I'm taking my 3/4" analogue tape and loop it through a dv deck (to make it digital) and into my apple G5 by firewire from the dv deck. I edit my piece out and and export it out as an AVI file. I adjust the AVI compression video setting to "none" and export it out to a server.
From this server our IT dept. takes it and encodes to the file type they want along with the settings for streaming. BUT some of the files they cannot encode.
It seems that the pieces that were edited from the raw DV tape were able to be encoded...and only SOME of the 3/4" pieces were able to be formated. Others give an error.
I'll post the error message here:
\videos\ProfessionalTechnicalEd\HumanSvcs\MarieR\New\Terminology
Error: 0xC00D1B83 - One or more codecs required to open this content could not be found.
C:\Program Files\Windows Media Components\Encoder>Pause
Press any key to continue . . .
Has anyone had this same issue and does anyone have a solution for getting these encoded from an AVI file.

I often need to make files in FCP that Windows Media Encoder can read for transcoding to WM#. My workflow from a dv sequence is:
1) "Export Using Quicktime Conversion"
2) Format: "AVI"
3) "Options..."
4) "Settings..."
5) Compression type: "DV/DVC PRO - NTSC"
6) Motion
a) Frames per second either 29.97 or "Best"
b) no "Key frame every" set (dv has no keyframes)
c) no "Limit data rate to" set (dv has its inherent own data rate)
7) Compressor
a) Quality "Best"
b) Scan Mode "Interlaced" (windows media encoder has its own de-interlacer)
c) Aspect Ratio "4:3" (I let windows media encoder do the aspect ratio correction depending on the final use)
This work flow just repackages the dv file in fcp into a dv encoded AVI with no re-compression.
The "uncompressed" option you describe basically gets you no advantage, its just a huge file.
There also could be problems with the audio that is causing windows media encoder to choke.
As an aside windows media encoder does its own "color correction" so you need to color correct your original fcp sequence to a full range sequence otherwise windows media encoder will make it really flat.

  • Aperture crashes upon trying to play video. Exporting .AVI file wont play.

    Hi,
I uploaded my holiday pictures and 4 videos into Aperture and when I try to play the videos I get pretty bad beachball with no playback of the video. When I export the file I am presented with a SAM_xxx.AVI file. (SAM from Samsung camera). I have tried to play the file with Quicktime, VLC & MPlayer X. I ran the 4 files through DivFix++ and I am given the error, "Input file is not .avi"
Any thoughts as to whats going on? Aperture shows a thumbnail for the videos and VLC shows correct length but no playback.
    Thanks

I have both an iPad and iPhone connected to my Mac. I disconnected both, then restarted my Mac and Safari. No improvement. Used Lion Recovery System to reload Lion. Interesting thing, Safari 5.1.7 was installed rather than Safari 6. This made me happy, as Safari 6 has been nothing but trouble for me. When I opened Safari, it took me back to apple.com, even though my homepage is yahoo.com. I was immediately confronted with the infamous Steve Jobs video, that has crashed my computer every time it's popped up on my screen. This time, however, it didn't crash ... I just got the spinning beachball for about 30 seconds, then the Quicktime thermometer at the bottom started moving and I was sure it was going to work. After the thermomter passed about one-fourth of the way over, the screen blanked and the Quicktime thermometer started all over again. This behavior persisted until I got tired of it and went to my home page. However, I can open Quicktime and watch videos again, even the YouTube ones that were crashing every time. Now I just have to figure out how to never let a Software Update stick me with Safari 6 ever again. If it does, I'm simply through with it and will make Firefox my default browser. Thank you so much for getting me this far. I will keep monitoring these discussions to see if Apple ever gets Safari 6 to the point that I'll give it another trial.

  • Some avi files wont run in quicktime

I've been having troubles running some divx/xvid files in quicktime, some say that i dont have the right codecs (then takes me to this site that has a listing of some codecs i've never heard of before and some that you have to pay for), also i found that some of the movies work in VLC Media Player, that dont in quicktime, i've installed the latest divx off the site, is there other files that i'd need to download?
(as im a switcher, back in the windows days, there was a site which had megapacks to download called Nimo codec packs, which would take care of sound, and video compatibility for media player (so that it could run divx's, xvids etc.)
I like the feel of quicktime more personally, feels more stable, but sadly im crippled by these issues regarding compatibility with divx/xvid and probably other older codecs

ffmegx is very easy -- but can be difficult to install if you don't follow the directions really closely. Before you install the program you have to download and install three files from third party sites -- the links are on the site -- to make things more confusing you have three files but only two sites are needed to visit. Then install ffmegx and you're set.
ffmegx is easy to use on AVIs. Depending on the size of the AVI I generally convert it to a .mov and adjust the settings to create a monster file. This may seem silly but this maintainst the quality, and .movs are easy for iMovie and iDVD to handle -- they downsize them very well with a minimum loss of quality.
But . . . I hate AVIs and I wish people would stop it already!

  • AVI files wont read with Mavericks installed

How do it set up the new quicktime 10.7 as the default setting? everytime I open a video it kicks me back to quicktime 10.3 version even though i downloaded the ne 10.7 version.

There is no 10.7 version of QuickTime. You probably mean QuickTime Player version 7 (Utilities folder).
Right click on one of your AVI's and open the Get Info window. From this window you can change the default "Open with" app to QuickTime Player 7 and  then click the "Change all" button.

  • Some avi-files not playing on QuickTime Pro 7.0.4

I tried to play a few avi-file movies using QuickTime Pro 7.0.4 on my Mac OS X 10.4.4, but unfortunately, I keep getting the message: "Some necessary QuickTime software is missing. It may be available on the QuickTime Web site." After going on that site, I downloaded some of the available free software, but the problem remains. Playing the movies with a third-application like the VLC, works fine. I wish QuickTime Pro would have the same capabilities in playing avi files like other Players. Do you have an idea how I can solve the problem?
    Thanks for your support!

Thanks for all your help guys. I guess I will remain with the VLC for playing AVI files that donnot play on the QT Player as the VLC plays almost any movie file. I came across an interesting article regarding the subject:
    QuickTime: About Playing .AVI Files
Learn why an .AVI file may not play as expected in QuickTime Player.
AVI stands for Audio Video Interleave. The .AVI format is what is known as a container format. It specifies a way in which a file may contain audio and video data. It does not specify how that data is encoded. The encoding of audio and video data is specified in what are known as codecs. A codec (short for COmpressor/DECompressor) tells the computer how to decode the audio and video tracks that have been encoded within the .AVI file. QuickTime Player can use numerous codecs by default. You can also add additional codecs to extend QuickTime's features using plug-ins or third-party installations.
When QuickTime opens an .AVI file, it checks to see which codecs were used to encode the audio and video tracks within it. For example, an .AVI file may contain a video track encoded in the Cinepak codec and an audio track encoded with the ALaw 2:1 codec. If both the audio and the video were compressed using a codec that QuickTime can use, the file will play normally. If the audio or video or both were created using codecs that QuickTime cannot use, you may see a message like the following:
"QuickTime is missing the software needed to perform this operation. Unfortunately, it is not available on the QuickTime server"
    or
"You may experience problems playing a video track in "filename.avi" because the required compressor could not be found."
These messages are not an indication that anything is wrong with QuickTime Player.
Lists of audio and video codecs included with and supported by QuickTime are available from the QuickTime specifications page.
Using QuickTime Player, you may be able to determine which codec was used to compress an audio or video track:
    QuickTime 6 and earlier
Open the file in QuickTime Player.
From the Movie menu, choose Get Movie Properties.
From the left pop-up menu in the Properties window, choose Sound Track or Video Track.
From the right pop-up menu, choose Format. The Format section shows the codec.
    QuickTime 7
Open the file in QuickTime Player.
From the Window menu, choose Show Movie Info. The codec is listed next to Format.
If the .AVI file is encoded using a codec that is not included with QuickTime, you might be able to find and add that codec so QuickTime can play media encoded with it. Contact the party that publishes or distributes the codec to see if a QuickTime version is available. Many third-party QuickTime components are available on the QuickTime components page.

  • Can iMovie 09 open AVI files?

I'm trying to make a machinima video but my video recorder program only saves to AVI format. Will that work with iMovie?

My son downloaded a program called Handbrake which takes the avi files and encodes them to mp4 format that you can open in iMovie. You identify each avi file and set them up in a queue. Then you run it and it deposits them in a pre-defined location.
    Here's a link...http://handbrake.fr/

  • I have a seagate 1tb hard drive and a 16gb memory stick, how do i transfer avi files from one to another as the click drag and drop wont work, please help?

i have a seagate 1tb hard drive and a 16gb memory stick, how do i transfer avi files from one to another as the click drag and drop wont work, please help?

    Greetings,
What happens when you drag it?
Make sure the drive you are moving the files to has enough available space to receive the file:
Click on the movie file and go to File >  Get Info and note the "size"
Check the drive to which you are moving the file to make sure it has enough available space: https://idisk.me.com/madisonfile-Public/web/finder-drive-available-space-and-for mat.html
Also note the format of the drive you are copying too.  If it is not Mac OS Extended or FAT (not recommended unless you are taking it to a windows computer) then that may be the issue.
    Hope that helps.

How do I export wmv and avi files from media encoder on a mac in CC2014?

    Nonsense.
Apple Compressor has been doing wmf exports for a decade. I have the Quicktime export components from Telestream and they appear as presets in Compressor. They should be available in Media Encoder or they should be importable. Adove apparently refuses to see them. Still trying to figure that out.

    Hi
There is a bit of confusing about this.
    • .avi - is a container - not a codec and can contain old .avi with codecs as Indeo 5 - and this needs to be converted
to be used in any iMovie or FinalCut (as I understands it)
    • I think Flip4Mac is the program to buy and use.
Howto find out what Codec - If Your .avi movie opens in QuickTime Player - then open Movie inspector and read it.

  • Why is it taking 19 hours to encode four avi. files. I just bought a new 21" iMac last week and it is just to slow to use. Thanks

I just bought a new 21" iMac last week and it is just to slow to use. Before it used to take a couple of hours now its just way too long

    Hi
As I understands it - This has nothing to do with Your iMac - Any Mac would take the same time.
May be OS and support on the Window-PC platform handles this better.
    • .avi - is no specific codec (file format) but a container and the codec in this might not be one that iDVD can directly use (encode to .mpeg2 as on DVD disks)
So either it just can't do it - or -
iDVD has to back-encode to an usably codec - THIS IS WHAT I THINK HAS HAPPENED
This back-encoding can take serious time - AND the final result usually is far from Good.
    I would
    • find out in what codec the .avi file is (I use QuickTime and in this inspector to read what codec .avi contains) (.mov is also a container)
    • import it into a program that can transcode to a better codec for iDVD - streamingDV or AIC (I GUESS)
    • then use this in iDVD

  • My mac wont play .avi files

My macbook stopped playing .avi files that I download from the internet a few months ago.  I assumed they were just broken links, but now its past coincidence.  I have perian, and had DivX.  I removed DivX (heard the 2 clash) but still nothing works.
I thought I would get rid of Perian and try divX, but when I "removed perian" it just said "removed" and didnt actually uninstall.
I also have a bunch of other stuff that I don't use (to my knowledge), wondered if any of it was important:
    Flip4Mac
    Growl
    MacFUSE

If the AVI files are "links" that feed off streaming content, it's possible they have all been removed on the respective streaming severs by the original source, depending on their age.
With that said, Flip4Mac is the Microsoft supported plugin to allow playback of Windows Media Content inside QuickTime. You can check your version & update if needed here:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/windows-media-player/wmcompo nents
It's also possible they may be Divx encoded files. Requiring the Divx decoder plugin:
    http://divx.com
Growl & MacFUSE are generally not related to Media Files. ( Google their names )
Also, Give VLC player a try. There isn't much of anything it won't play ( actually, try this first. ):

  • Media Encoder - wrong size on AVI files

I have an 720 x 480 AVI video, and Media Encoder keeps importing it as 640 x 480. I don't see a setting or control for enforcing the right aspect ratio, and the Pixel Preview setting doesn't have an effect on the output. I've tried Resize Video to enforce the right dimensions but I still get black bars on the sides. Any suggestions?
I have the same video in MOV format, but Media Encoder won't recognize it even though I have QuickTime 5 installed. Do I need to upgrade to QT7?

The AVI file plays with the correct dimensions in Windows Media Player, and the Quicktime version also has the correct dimensions. I don't have Premiere Pro, and I'm using the version of AME that came with the Design Premium CS4 package.

  • Encode Video Files not working for avi files

    Hi,
I've been trying to convert some .avi files to apple format using Lion's native 'Encode video files' function however keep getting a 'avconvert: source file not found for source file://fileparthhere avconvert: failed to create an export session. Check setup
I can't work out why as this has worked before in Lion and works fine for other video formats. The only thing I've done is remove Final Cut Express HD and can't add it again as I don't own it anymore
Suggestions? Is there a encoder to make this work or should it work anyway?
    Thanks

If you click Yes the project file will be updated when you save it. That has nothing to do with the media.
Are the Lesson and Media folders still in the Book Files folder (or whatever it's called)?
Select one of the clips in the browser and use Edit>Item Properties. One of the first lines is Source. That gives you the file path for where your media is supposed to be located. What does it say? If nothing is there, use the File>Reconnect function and point the application to where the media is located.

  • How can I batch replace audio in .avi files without re-encoding?

I have hundreds of .avi files that have two audio channels. One channel contains the audio from the original video footage, and the other channel contains speech-shaped noise that was added later.
I need to replace the speech-shaped noise with a different type of noise (multi-talker babble) without re-encoding the video and degrading its quality. I would like to be able to do this in a batch process if possible. Do any of you have an idea about how to approach this in Premiere Pro?
Some more details: each .avi file is about 2-3 seconds long, so I would need the replacement noise to be the same length as the original noise.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
