.AVI movie player?

I have a Power PC Mac running 10.5.8. If I download an .avi movie file i get a message saying Quicktime requires additional software. Can someone point me at the right Quicktime plug-in, or some other Mac software which will allow me to watch .avi movies please?
Thanks
P.s. not quicktime Pro

Hi,
AVI is only a container or "wrapper" the actual codec is inside the container. If you open the movie inspector it will tell you what the codec is under "format". You can then go to this link to see if the codec is supported.

Google 'Perian' and 'Flip4Mac' — these are the extensions that will make QT play other file formats.
However, a simpler solution is just to abandon QT in favour of the free, open-source player VLC, which plays just about everything natively without further downloads.
Download the free VLC Player from here:
    http://www.videolan.org
Plays just about everything, including avi & mpg, without add ons.

  • Quicktime player for .avi movies

    Hello,
I have downloaded the latest QT version pro and i can't play the avi movies i have. QT always ask me to instal component for quicktime. I have installed divx codec and xvid to... no difference.
the only movie i can play is a small avi movie made from a camera.
    thanks for helping me

There is no single codec for movies that have .avi extensions. AVI is a container format, not a specific type of file. An AVI movie may use one of the Indeo codecs or one of the various flavors of DivX, among other possibilities. You'll have to find out what codec was used for the movies you want to view to determine what you need. Note that not all codecs for the various .avi movies are available for QuickTime.
If you can identify the codec used (if QuickTime's Movie Inspector won't list the codec, another player such as VLC Media Player probably will), you can post that information here and someone may be able to point you to the appropriate codec or confirm that a QuickTime-compatible codec doesn't exist.
    Regards.

  • HT3775 Quick Time player does not support AVI movies?

I can't play an AVI movie on quick time player. Why?

If you cant play it in QuickTime, then another media player may be more successful. A couple of good options that generally pick up where QuickTime falls short are VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html) and MPlayer OS X Extended (http://www.mplayerosx.ch).

  • No Quicktime (and other player) audio in AVI movies and no Quicktime on web

Audio and video playback works fine with CDs, DVDs, etc.
AVI movies downloaded with Torrent play excellent video but no audio. When the movie starts I am informed that a Quicktime component is missing and I am directed to a website that offers many 3rd quicktime components. I have installed all of the free plugins. No go.
Websites show the quicktime logo dimmed with a "?" mark in the center. I have downloaded and installed all of the 3rd party Quicktime plugins that I can find.
I have also changed Safari and Quicktime player to open with Rosetta (as suggested by Shockwave). No joy.
    HELP!
20" Intel iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1.5 gig of RAM

Open one of the "no sound" files in QuickTime Player.
Open the Movie Info (Window menu) and note the audio codec used in the file.
Do a Google search for "codec name" +Mac and find a version compatible with your OS and computer model.

  • I do have an external HD with at least 3T of movies but can not play them at all  play them at all they are AVI movies what should i to to play them please help me out

    To all my Mac friends
I have an external hard drive with 3T of movies but i tried to play them i always get this message
:: To see if additional software is available that will enable Quick Time player to open the movie click for more:::
The listr of the movie is showing AVI Movies so i can not open any movie so pleaset help me help me find a way to transfer or to download any program such as VLC in order for me to watch that many movies and i thank you so much for your help and attention

Your intuition is correct. Download a free download of VLC player, and you may end up using it as your default video player. (It's faster and more versatile than QTPlayer.)
When you install it on your MacBook, it willl allow you to view media on your external HD.

  • Can't Play AVI movie with QT 7.1

I am unable to run this particular avi movie, Rendezvous, which I downloaded to my G5. All I get is a white background and a very intermittent/jerky sound. Also the total time of the movie gets doubled with QT Player which may account for the screwy sound.
When first launched the following notification comes up:
Some necessary QuickTime software is missing. It may be available on the QuickTime Web Site. .......
The referenced site has a lot of codecs but I have no idea which one I need.
It plays just fine with VLC.
What do I need to add to QT 7.1 in order to play that particular movie? I have QT Pro 7.1 and the mpeg2 update.
    G5 Dual-core 2GHz, 2G RAM, 250G HD, 22" Display, Mac OS X [10.4.6], 200/160GB FW, QT 7.0.4 Pro, Canon S400, i850 & LIDE 50, Epson R200, iVMP 3.0.2

Oddly enough, prior to downloading the video in question, I had just done a clean install of my OS, so no components were in the Quicktime Folder of my Library.
I downloaded DivX 6 from here:
    http://www.divxmovies.com/codec/
Now, the only components in my Quicktime Folder (HD > Library > Quicktime) are the DivX6 Encoder and Decoder components.
I just relaunched Quicktime after the components were installed and the video plays fine in Quicktime. Using the converter is not necessary.
Here is a link showing the viddy on my computer:

  • Burning AVI movie files to DVD, whats the trick in iDVD?

I have AVI movie files that I want to burn to a DVD. I am able to "import" the file and do all the extras with iDVD but I am unable to select chapters and when I try to preview the movie its just a blank screen. What am I missing?!

    Hi
.avi is no Video Format/Codec - it is a container and can hold Codecs that iDVD can use or NOT
    • Open it in QuickTime Player
    • then open Inspector (cmd+I)
    • read - Video Format/Codec: nnnnnnnnn
    What does it read ?

  • How to play AVI movies with Qtime?

I have some .avi movies and was prompted(by QTime) to go to 3rd party download site to find an "add on" for adapting it to work. Non avi players / codecs / anything on the website. Please suggest alternatives. thx.

AVI files play perfectly using QuickTime Player on all three of my Macs. Either you didn't install Perian correctly, or you have some faulty QuickTime software, or you have one particular AVI file that is corrupt. Try another AVI file. What is the message you get from QuickTime when you use QT to open the file?
Also, my VLC (you have written VLI, but surely you have VLC???) plays AVI files perfectly... well, as perfectly as VLC can.

  • Playing AVI movie files??

Help. I have 3 Macs: G4 Flat Panel, Imac G5- which play AVI movie files just fine. Mac Mini (specs below) which does not. Been at it for hours. The two older ones are non-intel, the mini is intel, this is the only difference I can see. I have the same software and plug-ins installed; (quicktime pro, flip for mac, windows media player, divx plug-in, xvid) All of them are running 10.4.11. When I put in a movie encoded in AVI in the mini I get a prompt that says roughly 'additional software plugin might be needed', can't think of anything else to do. Any info appreciated. Thank you.

If anyone else has this problem with an intel based mac here is link that solved my problem.

  • .avi movies that I could open in QT7pro on my G5 cannot open in QT7pro on my i5 iMac. What do I do?

.AVI movies that could be displayed and edited with QT pro 7 on my G5 now appear a black frames on my i5 imac. What can I do to see these movies?

VLC media player - http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ - general media player that plays just about anything.

  • AVI movie duration in File Info?

Whenever AVI movie is selected in Finder brief File Info is listed including Preview in right panel. It contains such fields as Kind, Size, etc. and Duration. Unfortunately Duration field of all AVI files is empty (--). Is it possible somehow to make this field showing real number?
Otherwise I have to open every movie in Quicktime -> FileInfo to get movie Duration.

Spotlight reads file metadata (image dimensions, video dimension/duration for example), then Finder reads Spotlight's index and displays the information in column view and in the "Get Info" window. That's the basic concept, your/our problem is an issue caused by Spotlight.
Spotlight misses a plugin (*.mdimporter) telling it to read the metadata from .avi files. CoreMedia.mdimporter in System/Library/Spotlight links to .mov, .mpg, .mp4, .3ggp only. Well, to QuickTime's core media formats, you know.
A workaround is to save .avi files as .mov files ("movie container") in QuickTime Player. The file will not be exported/encoded in any way, it will simply be "compressed" in a container, kind of zipped, and Spotlight will read the information. It's just the file extension. In QuickTime 7 you have to select "self-contained movie", otherwise you'll create an alias. QuickTime X saves self-contained movies by default. Of course, this only works, if your .avi file opens with QuickTime Player...
A solution may simply be to edit the Info.plist in CoreMedia.mdimporter. I don't know. Most likely not, much too simple. And then there's still Code Signature.

  • Error opening .avi movie file

When I try to open an .avi movie in quicktime I get a message that says:
"Error opening movie. The movie could not be opened." How can I open the movie? Or can I? Thanks...
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    turtle007 & Mew Gull,
    To Apple Discussions!
Open the file with QuickTime Player.
Open the Movie Info window (Command-i).
Note the name of the video codec used in the file.
Do a Google.com search for codec name +Mac and download one appropriate for your OS and computer.
Quit and relaunch QuickTime after installing the new codec.
    Try the file again.
Thanks to QuickTimeKirk for the above info.
If the above does not work, then use VLC Media Player or Perian (AVI and FLV support)

  • Can´t open all my AVI movies.

I have done all my AVI movies with a Canon PowerShot A70. Never had a problem, but after the last update of Leopard 10.5.2 I can´t open them. When I try it an strange thing happens.
All what is in my Desktop disappear, the menu bar, the folders and the external HDs, then, they appear again.
    Please, can anybody help me?
    Regards

I'm having a peculiar problem with AVI files, too. I used to use a Canon SD450. Clumsy me, I dropped it and it could not be repaired. I upgraded to the Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS. It's an awesome little camera. However, a weird thing is happening with AVI files. The full file downloads, and I can see the size of the file: 10MB, 20MB, 200MB, whatever... size [in this case] really doesn't matter.
The problem is that iPhoto is only showing the movie to be 0:01 in duration. When I try to launch the file from any player (QT, Windows Media, RealPlayer, et al) it shows one frame, the screen of the player turns white for one second, and the player stops; the progress meter runs all the way across the screen.
The Mac is only seeing a snippet of the footage and can't render the rest of it. Curious, I reviewed videos i'd captured with my Canon SD450, and they still play just as they once had (no errors or read/playback issues).
As a secondary measure, I uploaded a video file from my hard drive (downloaded from the camera to the internal disc) to a hosting site. The video successfully uploaded and played just fine from the web page.
Anyone got a clue? Anyone know if Canon changed codecs in the AVI format? I can't seem to find anything on these forums about the "white screen" or "0:01 second videos," which is what i'm having a problem with. Further, I don't see anything on the Canon website about it.
I'm running the latest version of QT
PS: this same problem occurred when I uploaded AVI files from a friend's camera, the Canon SD750.
