AVI movies & QuickTime

I have some AVI movies, for which I needed to install the xVid componants for and all worked fine. Now Quciktime quits when trying to open them. Just installed FinalCut Express HD and tried to import a movie and since then I can't open these AVI files that were working fine a few hours ago.
Any ideas?

Google 'Perian' and 'Flip4Mac' — these are the extensions that will make QT play other file formats.
However, a simpler solution is just to abandon QT in favour of the free, open-source player VLC, which plays just about everything natively without further downloads.
Download the free VLC Player from here:

Plays just about everything, including avi & mpg, without add ons.

  • Have problem to convert MOV to AVI in QuickTime Pro 6.1

Have problem to convert MOV to AVI in QuickTime Pro 6.1 - I tried export (convert) MOV(18MB) to AVI format, and got just 253KB AVI file in output. I even can no play it. What is wrong? What Export options(quality) should be selected? I used default (medium), should I use 'high' or 'best'?

I am assuming you already are able to open the movie
in QT Player. Use Export in the File menu, choose
Movie to Avi in the drop-down Export Menu and then
click on Options to choose one of the pre-loaded avi
codecs for the compression. You may also want to
search for and install one of the newer codecs, such
as 3ivx or divx since the preinstalled codecs are all
    rather old.

Thanks for the help. It worked, but the quality of the video is poor. Is there anything I can do about this?

  • No sound from .avi movies in QuickTime

Hi -- I have two questions, really:
    1. Why no audio from .avi movies played in QuickTime?
    2. How do I install audio codecs?
    Thanks!

The AVI container (invented and abandoned by its creator Microsoft) has been abused to no end by poorly informed users and its use should just die and go away as Microsoft intended when they introduced WMP.
Use the Movie Info window of QuickTime Player to discover the audio codec used in the file.
Use a Google search (codec name +Mac) to find a version that works on your OS. Most include an installer.

  • Quicktime player for .avi movies

    Hello,
I have downloaded the latest QT version pro and i can't play the avi movies i have. QT always ask me to instal component for quicktime. I have installed divx codec and xvid to... no difference.
the only movie i can play is a small avi movie made from a camera.
    thanks for helping me

There is no single codec for movies that have .avi extensions. AVI is a container format, not a specific type of file. An AVI movie may use one of the Indeo codecs or one of the various flavors of DivX, among other possibilities. You'll have to find out what codec was used for the movies you want to view to determine what you need. Note that not all codecs for the various .avi movies are available for QuickTime.
If you can identify the codec used (if QuickTime's Movie Inspector won't list the codec, another player such as VLC Media Player probably will), you can post that information here and someone may be able to point you to the appropriate codec or confirm that a QuickTime-compatible codec doesn't exist.
    Regards.

  • No Quicktime (and other player) audio in AVI movies and no Quicktime on web

Audio and video playback works fine with CDs, DVDs, etc.
AVI movies downloaded with Torrent play excellent video but no audio. When the movie starts I am informed that a Quicktime component is missing and I am directed to a website that offers many 3rd quicktime components. I have installed all of the free plugins. No go.
Websites show the quicktime logo dimmed with a "?" mark in the center. I have downloaded and installed all of the 3rd party Quicktime plugins that I can find.
I have also changed Safari and Quicktime player to open with Rosetta (as suggested by Shockwave). No joy.

20" Intel iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1.5 gig of RAM

Open one of the "no sound" files in QuickTime Player.
Open the Movie Info (Window menu) and note the audio codec used in the file.
Do a Google search for "codec name" +Mac and find a version compatible with your OS and computer model.

  • After last uppgrade, Quicktime Pro will not play audio on my avi movies.

After last update, I will not get the audio on my old .avi movies. Does Anyone else have the same problem?

That actually did the trick. Well played. It would be nice if that were in *any* of the support documentation for AirPlay.
    Many thanks.

  • How do I rotate an AVI movie?

This is a weird one, but here goes.
I'm using a Canon SD550, which makes AVI movies. I've got a couple of such movies where the camera was held vertically rather than horizontally. They don't display correctly in iPhoto or Quicktime.
My solution is to use QT Pro, open the properties window and change the visual settings for the video track.
Then I save as, which creates an MOV file. Then I import the new file back into iPhoto and copy the the time and date from the old, unrotated file and then finally, delete the old file.
The problem is that in one case the "poster frame" comes in garbled, no matter what I do. This is not the Quicktime poster frame -- it's the still frame that iPhoto shows you in the iPhoto library. It seems to have been taken from the first frame of the file, but it's all jumbled up and looks like a mess.
Does anybody know whether this is a serious problem? Does it mean the video is messed up somehow (it seems to play fine)? And does anybody know how to fix it?
Thanks very much to anyone who can help.
    Steve

    Steve,
I haven't tried rotating with QT Pro, but I do have a suggestion for you. My Canon came with ImageBrowser. I don't normally use it because iPhoto is superior. However, if you select a video clip in IB you can open it inside the Video Edit task. It has several functions to edit the clip, including actually rotating it. (By actually I mean that it's not just a display setting.) If you have this app, you could rotate the video clip before importing into iPhoto. I would expect that iPhoto would have no problem creating the poster frame and thumbnail correctly. I have used rotated clips in iMovie with no problems.
I thought QT pro could also properly rotate a video clip, without just changing the display settings. People on the QT forums or iMovie forums (esp QuickTime Kirk) would be able to advise you there.
    Regards.

  • How can i play an avi movie on my mac using 10.10.3

I'm using Macbook Pro Version 10.10.3
I'm trying to play an .AVI movie I downloaded and can't get it to open. I saw a solution online named VLC, but am not sure if I should trust it. The other question is if I did use it would it interfere with normal QuickTime usage?

    Why?

    No, it won't.
An .avi doesn't tell the full story. .avi, .mpg, .wav, .mp3, ...etc. are just wrappers. The content is encoded with a Codec. The codec that encodes the media is the part that matters wrt whether it will play natively.
VLC will decode a multitude of codecs.

  • Can't Play AVI movie with QT 7.1

I am unable to run this particular avi movie, Rendezvous, which I downloaded to my G5. All I get is a white background and a very intermittent/jerky sound. Also the total time of the movie gets doubled with QT Player which may account for the screwy sound.
When first launched the following notification comes up:
Some necessary QuickTime software is missing. It may be available on the QuickTime Web Site. .......
The referenced site has a lot of codecs but I have no idea which one I need.
It plays just fine with VLC.
What do I need to add to QT 7.1 in order to play that particular movie? I have QT Pro 7.1 and the mpeg2 update.
    G5 Dual-core 2GHz, 2G RAM, 250G HD, 22" Display, Mac OS X [10.4.6], 200/160GB FW, QT 7.0.4 Pro, Canon S400, i850 & LIDE 50, Epson R200, iVMP 3.0.2

Oddly enough, prior to downloading the video in question, I had just done a clean install of my OS, so no components were in the Quicktime Folder of my Library.
I downloaded DivX 6 from here:
    http://www.divxmovies.com/codec/
Now, the only components in my Quicktime Folder (HD > Library > Quicktime) are the DivX6 Encoder and Decoder components.
I just relaunched Quicktime after the components were installed and the video plays fine in Quicktime. Using the converter is not necessary.

  • Burning AVI movie files to DVD, whats the trick in iDVD?

I have AVI movie files that I want to burn to a DVD. I am able to "import" the file and do all the extras with iDVD but I am unable to select chapters and when I try to preview the movie its just a blank screen. What am I missing?!

    Hi
.avi is no Video Format/Codec - it is a container and can hold Codecs that iDVD can use or NOT
    • Open it in QuickTime Player
    • then open Inspector (cmd+I)
    • read - Video Format/Codec: nnnnnnnnn
    What does it read ?

  • How to play AVI movies with Qtime?

I have some .avi movies and was prompted(by QTime) to go to 3rd party download site to find an "add on" for adapting it to work. Non avi players / codecs / anything on the website. Please suggest alternatives. thx.

AVI files play perfectly using QuickTime Player on all three of my Macs. Either you didn't install Perian correctly, or you have some faulty QuickTime software, or you have one particular AVI file that is corrupt. Try another AVI file. What is the message you get from QuickTime when you use QT to open the file?
Also, my VLC (you have written VLI, but surely you have VLC???) plays AVI files perfectly... well, as perfectly as VLC can.

  • Playing AVI movie files??

Help. I have 3 Macs: G4 Flat Panel, Imac G5- which play AVI movie files just fine. Mac Mini (specs below) which does not. Been at it for hours. The two older ones are non-intel, the mini is intel, this is the only difference I can see. I have the same software and plug-ins installed; (quicktime pro, flip for mac, windows media player, divx plug-in, xvid) All of them are running 10.4.11. When I put in a movie encoded in AVI in the mini I get a prompt that says roughly 'additional software plugin might be needed', can't think of anything else to do. Any info appreciated. Thank you.

If anyone else has this problem with an intel based mac here is link that solved my problem.
