AVI saved to avi

Hi-
I am using MPEG Streamclip to trim home movies. When I save my .AVI clip in "Save As" it creates a .avi clip, and when in my MOVIES folder in my Finder, I do not see a thumbnail of the clip anymore, just a clip with the same title, but a lowercase ".avi" not the original ".AVI" uppercase letters.
I am a novice, so I am not sure which forum was correct to ask this question. I thought this forum might have some expertise in this subject. Eventually I want to take the trimmed clips and put them into iMovie to create a finished product. So, after I trim the movie, does it matter to iMovie if the clip is lowercase .avi or uppercase .AVI? and What happened to the thumbnail image. I just get a stock QT image as the thumbnail. Thanks for any help or ideas. I have the upgrade for iLife08 so I will be working with iMovie 08. Have a nice day, Tim

Goozzie,
No problem.
In Adobe parlance, Save is the process of actually Saving the PREL/Project file. In PrE parlance, the terms for outputting to an AV file would be Export (prior to version 7), Share (versions 7 - 10), and Publish+Share for PrE 11.
For a bit more background on the PREL, and on the Save functions (there are basically three versions, plus AutoSave), see this article: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3392837#3392837
When working in the Project (and especially with larger, more intricate Projects), I use all three versions of Save, depending on what I need to do.
Good luck,

  • Can't change extension avi.download  to avi while downloading?

    anyone have idea?
ever since i upgade to mountain lion, the downloading file become grey, I can't change the avi.download to avi, anyone knows how to change that?

After some Googling, it does appear that Flip4Mac is causing the problem. It appears that once installed it assumes control over the codecs 'msmpeg4v1.component' and 'msmpeg4v2.component' which were probably decoding the VCM before F4M.
The solution should be to remove F4M and install those codecs. Do you have those codecs installed? Look in Library/QuickTime, see what codecs are installed and list them here. Select all the contents of Library/QuickTime, do a copy, and paste them in the 'Post Message: Reply' Window here.
    You could try installing this codec pack;
    http://www.cs.pdx.edu/~feelgood/opengl/codecs/FFusion.dmg
with the Flip4Mac codecs uninstalled and see if that helps. This codec pack includes the 'msmpeg4v1.component' and 'msmpeg4v2.component' codecs. Basically, you want to go back to the codecs you had installed before Flip4Mac. And you might want to restart the machine after making those changes.
Or you could use ffmpegX to convert the VCM AVI into a high bit rate MPEG4 AVI and then use QT to convert to DV. That appears to be what other people on this forum did in your situation. Do a search for 'VCM Image Codec' on this board and see what you find.
And you might want to Google "-Your Camera make/model- and Macintosh" and see what you find.

  • Merged overlay not saving to AVI

    LV2013/Vision 2013
In a loop, I am grabbing images from a camera using the Vision Acquisition express vi.  To the output image, I add a text overlay of the system time (e.g., 11:23:56.489).  The overlay is pure white text on a pure black background.  I then send this resultant image through the Merge Overlay.vi to destructively place the overlay onto the image.  I then save this image as a frame in an AVI file with IMAQ AVI2 Write Frame.vi.  On the LV front panel image indicator, the image shows the timestamp.  However, the saved AVI file does not.  The AVI file shows the frames as if the overlay was never there.  It's as if the Merge Overlay.vi didn't actually do a destructive merge and the IMAQ AVI2 Write Frame.vi just threw it out.  Anybody have any idea why the overlay isn't showing up in the AVI?
    Thanks,
    Dave

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

That did it - thanks.  It had worked before with the old version of AVI Write Frame, but not the new one.  Creating a new RGB32 IMAQ image and wiring that to the ImgDst terminal solved the issue.

  • Pre8 crashes when saving as AVI

    Hello,
I've have a couple of MiniDV tapes of HD video that I need to convert to SD. I've tried putting them in the timeline - 1 clip at a time, and saving them as an AVI.  I can get 22% finished or so, and the computer will either crash, or I'll get a blue screen.  I'm trying Pre7 now to see if maybe it'll work better.  My disks are defragged, my drivers are up-to-date, and I've done performance tests on my PC, to see if maybe it was a hardware issue - no answers yet.
    Any ideas??
    Thanks,
    Shama

A BSOD is almost always a sign of hardware issues. The main ones are:
1.) heat buildup affecting the CPU, the RAM or the HDD's
    2.) RAM going bad
3.) Power Supply Unit going bad, not capable of handling the load or not configured properly to supply adequate voltage to the system components.
    4.) MoBo going bad

  • Importing DV footage saved as AVI

    Hi Guys,
I've spent four years working on a project using Premiere Pro on a Windows machine. <ducking> During that time I've captured hundreds of hours worth of footage from DV cams that were saved in the AVI format. Now I'm being asked to provide that footage to another party who edits on a Mac using FCP.
I know (assume) that FCP can work with native DV footage although I don't know if it can use DV footage in an AVI wrapper. Can it? If not, and assuming I don't want to recompress since the DV data itself should be FCP compatible, is there a workaround to make these files FCP compatible?
    Thanks

AVI files that use the DV codec will playback in Final Cut Pro without re-rendering.
Just for fun, I tested this a few minutes ago with such a clip on my G4 (worst case scenario).
    It was fine.

  • Prel saved to avi

    Hi,

  • Problems saveing to avi but not swf

hey all! I did a search around the forum but i dont believe i
saw a previous thread like this but im sure i missed it. so a
pre-emptive sorry. anyways onto the reason for this post.
My husband and i just got cs3. And I was playing around
trying to find out how to green screen. I found a tutorial on
youtube but it doesnt cover saveing. Anyways i went to export it
but the only thing that works is .swf . If i export it as avi or
mov neither save it correctly. they both seem to just save the
image and not the animation ontop of it. And unfortunately
youtube.com doesn't accept swf to upload. I was hopeing you all
would know what im doing wrong and how to save it to a youtube
friendly file. for the most part avi or mov.
To make the movie. I used keylight in after effects to get
the green screen then saved as a flv then opend it in flash
and imported the picture. then layed down the playable movie
file and then tried to export it. dunno why nothing else is working
but swf. but im a complete newb so im not surprised this baffles
me. anyways thanks so very much to anyone who can help!!!!!!! or if
im makeing it wrong can you point me in the right direction to edit
green screens. but ive been working on this for about 3 days trying
persistantly to make it work or convert it but nada. anyways ty in
    advance

You'll have to use 3rd party woftware to either convert from
swf to flv, or swf to avi. I don't know of any freeware that does
    this though.
    Total
Video Converter can do swf to flv and costs $41.
    WinAVI
Video Converter can do swf to avi (and other video formats like
    mpg) and costs $30.

  • Saving in AVI - does it preserve HDV format or default to DV?

I have two movies I have saved - one 40 min and one 1.5 hours.  Both are in High Definition format from HDV Tape.  I want to combine them, and understand that if I save them both in AVI format, I can recall one, and then combine the other one into it.
BUT- will this retain teh HDV (High Definition)  format or go to regular DV?

No. If you want to export both for a hi-def project use Share/Personal Computer/MPEG using the 1440x1080 preset.
As I say in my books, this will output a hi-def video that will import right into a project using the HDV settings.
This is apparently a follow-up to your other thread. Please don't create a new thread when we're finishing up the discussion on the first thread.

  • IMovie saving as .avi trouble

I've got two projects that I need final editing done on a PC (can't help it, not in my control). I saved one as an .avi, and had no problems. The second and longer (19:33mins) project is giving me all kinds of problems.
I used the same settings, same compression, same aspect ration, same sound settings...the works. I don't get an error message. What I do get is only the first 41s as an .avi The point where it stops is not a scene change, or transistion.
Is there somewhere I can find an iMovie troubleshooting solution? I've looked all over the i-net for a solution or similar problem on mac-forums and the like. It seems many have problems playing or capturing .avi files, but not saving as them. Am I the only person with this problem?
Saving as .dv, .mpg, .mov is fine. But I need it in .avi to keep up the quality. The vids will go on my local public access tv station, if....

Welcome JoeArc10 to the  iMovie boards ...
.. The second and longer (19:33mins) project is giving me all kinds of problems.
and I assume, you try to save it on a 'PC formatted' drive, right?
fat32 (drive format) has a built-in barrier of 2GBs per file (that is a Windows 'standard', not a Mac problem) .. or, in dv-encoded material 19min-and-some-secs..
chop your export in two, try again..

  • Movie saved as AVI

I must save a short movie for a client so it will play on a PC without QuickTime and it will not be load on the corporations computers. It must also be under 50mg, it's only going to be a 30second movie. It will be e-mailed to employees. I can save it as a avi file but to get the best quality it is to big. Is there any way to change the dimensions so the image and the file size is smaller. Also what is the best compression to use.
    Thanks

    Hi Dave,
as an Apple user, you should make some "propaganda" for Quicktime-for-windows.... ;-)), hey, PC-users, and it's free!!!
    to get serious:
compressing video files is an art form, see what our iMovie expert Dan is writing on his excellent website about exporting: Dan's unofficial iM website (look at the point export)
you can play around with the settings: make it smaller, less frame rates (15 is in most cases enough), make it mono.....

  • Get associated avi file from avi file reference

For normal bytestream files, there is a "refum to path" function (under File I/O -> Advanced File Functions) that will give the associated file path for the input file reference.  This does not seem to work when an AVI file reference (opened using IMAQ's AVI functions) is wired ("refnum to path" returns <Not a Path>).  Is there a way to extract the AVI file path from an AVI file reference?

Thanks for your help.  The design of my program involves streaming video to disk (along with multiple other parallel functions, including DAQ interfacing and collection, playing back AVIs in mediaplayer, etc.).  Because of this, I have multiple "engine" loops running in parallel to the user interface loop.  In the UI loop, the target of the streaming video can be changed or even turned off, so I have a LV2 functional global holding the AVI file reference, which the video streaming engine checks for validity before proceeding through a loop iteration.  However, in the engine, certain decisions about extra data that needs to be saved with the streaming video is made by checking the directory of the file it is instructed to write to.  Therefore, a way to extract that file name from the reference in the LV2 global would be usefull.  The workaround I have to use now is to store the file path as well as the AVI file reference in the LV2 global and pass them around together.  This isn't that bad, but in the intrest of keeping block diagrams uncluttered with data I shouldn't need, I posted the question.

  • How DV-AVI is DV-AVI ?

I have a lot of old (from 1988 onwards) analog Video 8 tapes. The old Panasonic stopped functioning for a long time now, but I found a company that will digitize the footage. Because I want to edit it all in Prel, the format is going to be DV-AVI.
Now before I ask this to be done: does "DV-AVI" appear in various types? That would need a specific codec if I want Prel to import and handle the files? And if so, what codec(s) should I request this company to use?
Or is "DV-AVI" always the same DV-AVI, and is there nothing to worry about?
    Thanks for your comments
    Felix

DV is the codec (compression system) you want with your AVI. If you're getting a DV-AVI, you're getting what you need.
Now, there are two types of DV-AVIs (called Type 1 and Type 2, interestingly). They're virtually identical in content, and only a little Microsoft quirk separates them.
In fact, pretty much only Microsoft uses Type 1's.
All of which is more than you need to know.
So, yes. The short answer is a NTSC DV-AVI is an NTSC DV-AVI. If your digitizer is creating them from your old video, you're in.

  • Microsoft DV AVI or Microsoft AVI?

    Hey again guys.
When I export, I usually do the file type as Microsoft AVI, and the compressor Cinepak Codec by Radius.
Is it "better"(quality, time, size wise) to use Microsoft DV AVI with a different compressor such as DV NTSC or DV PAL?
    Thanks for your answers!

    > compressor Cinepak Codec by Radius
That's a horrible and ancient codec. Don't use it unless you have a specific requirement to use it.
    > Microsoft DV AVI with a different compressor such as DV NTSC or DV PAL?
Just about anything is better than Cinepak or Indeo 3.2 -- but the exact compressor/settings you choose usually depends on your sourcess and your intentions. What is this file going to be used for? What is your target platform? Do you live in North America or Japan (NTSC) or somewhere else (PAL)?
