Avi straight to DVD

Hi, I am fairly new to both iDvd and Imovie. I have a .avi file 700 MB that I want to burn to dvd with iDvd so I can play it on my DVD player. When I try to import this file to a basic iDvd project I end up with a project over 8 Giga bytes, wich of course wont fit a 4.7 gb dvd disc. What can I do to burn this avi as a dvd disc?
Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the forums.
Files with the .avi extension are compressed to reduce the video file size, but the avi "container" doesn't specifically describe what compression process was used. If that internal process (called a codec) was DivX, for example, the video file would be very highly compressed... here's the rub.
A standalone DVD player expects a conventional DVD to contain video files in a very specific format (mpeg2), so if your file is being converted from one of the .avi container formats to mpeg2, the end file could easily be larger than the beginning file.
The best measure of how much will fit on a DVD with iDVD is the length of your production - under 60 min is an easy fit. Two hours is iDVD's max, but subtract some for menus, etc. How long is your production?

  • Any way to avoid FCP taking HNC150 (AVCHD) footage straight to DVD?

I have some footage shot on the HMC150, then transfered to HDD that I need to go straight to DVD with. Is there a decent way to go to DVDSP with this footage? I would like to avoid the FCP>ProRes>Compressor>DVDSP trip if possible. A client just needs the raw stuff, no editing.
    Thanks, K

Don't know if this pertinent to the AVCHD Files that the Panasonic makes, but using Toast 9, I mounted my Sony AVCHD camera to the desktop, opened the hard drive and dragged the folder BDMV into the Toast window for making a Video DVD. Because this folder contains files other than the video files, Toast automatically rejected those. The video files all loaded, with an interesting note that one long clip that is 29 minutes long loaded as bunch of smaller clips (the 2 gig limit, I assume).
If I were to go ahead a burn this, I it would create an SD DVD - in fact, what the heck, let me go ahead an burn the DVD and see how it comes out . . . . will report later.

  • Burning vhs straight to dvd

I have some old family movies that I want to burn straight to dvd. I have a sony hc96 camcorder and am able to import through the camera into imovie but not straight to idvd. Any ideas

You either need to buy a DVD video recorder OR import your video into iMovie and create one movie file of them all. Then you can use iDVD's OneStep DVD from a File method.
The direct to iDVD OneStep DVD approach only works when you have a miniDV tape with an unbroken time code.

  • Burning Avi's To DVD

I just bought my new 27" iMac. And I wanted to burn some avi movies I downloaded to dvd. I thought I could get iDVD to work. But it wouldn't show the preview of it. So I downloaded the DivX codec. And the avi's will open up in the program now. But I really wanna know is will it still be able to burn to dvd and is there a way I can add subtitles if needed.
And any suggestions on what program would work to do what I want. I used to use ConvertXtoDVD on my pc. But they don't make that for Mac. So all help will be appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
To determine where this problem is occurring, I suggest that, while in iDVD, you save your project as a disk image. Go to File>Save as disk image. This will create a file that can be viewed on your computer's DVD player. You will be able to see just how your project will work when viewed on a regular DVD player. You will be able to catch errors and correct them before burning and possibly wasting a disk. If the disk image plays correctly, then you know that the encoding is being done correctly. This would point to problems with the burn process. If there are problems with the disk image, then the issue is with encoding.
I tried burning the .avi files to DVD with my wife's laptop and they came out fine.

  • Burning AVI files to DVD

Can someone please recommend a freeware or open source program to burn AVI files to DVD?
Thanks in advance for any help!

    Credit BGreg for:
There are a number of ways to turn an avi into a DVD viewable on a normal DVD player. You need to convert, or render, the avi file to a DVD image and then burn it onto the DVD. Here are a few ways to do that:
Using included Apple iLife apps, you can import an avi file into iMovie, passing it on to iDVD for making the DVD, which includes menu's.
Commercial programs Popcorn 2 and Toast 7 from Roxio are good for converting different file types to DVD, and give you more options than the included Apple iLife programs.
You can use programs like MPEG streamclip, truly the video Swiss army knife for video stream conversion, and DVD imager to burn the image. Both are available through http://www.versiontracker.com/macosx
When you burn your DVD, using quality DVD's will maximize the chances that your DVD player will play them (I tend to use TDK when available on sale). Unless you have a pretty new external DVD player, you should probably stick with DVD-R or DVD+R disks. DVD-RW probably won't work in older DVD players. I've used both -R and +R's successfully.

  • P.Pro 1.5 - Losing quality in AVI/MPEG to DVD conversion

    Hi, everyone.
Is my first time in Adobe forums and my english isn't certainly the best, so excuse me for something I'll possibly make wrong :-)
    This is my problem:
I edit a lot of videos (holidays, weddings, karting, ...) from Mini-DV tapes. No problem on edit work, neither on export to AVI or MPEG. And at this point (after export) I don't think I had lost some video quality or if had that would be slight. But when I finished the next step (convert the resulting file to DVD format) I realize that video suffers from a substantial quality lost, mainly a distortion on whites (they get much brighter and, of course, lose some of its texture). Also, not always, is noticeable a kind of yellow and red thin lines along the "objects" shape (mainly on human faces).
At first I thought that was noting about Premiere and all about the conversion from AVI/MPEG to DVD because it's when the problem occurs, but after I had experimented all kind of converting software and the problem happens all times (sometimes more, sometimes less), I become to think the problem may be in Premiere exporting settings.
So, these are my Premiere exporting settings:
Export to AVI: File -> Export -> Movie
    Some important settings:

I also thought the problem could be on the hardware but a few months ago I made an upgrade on my computer and changed CPU, Motherboard, RAM and Graphics card (had an AMD Sempron 2800+, 2 GB DDR and an ATI 9600 Pro 128MB) and the problem still remains...
Actually I think it match all the needs:
CPU: DualCore Intel Core 2 Duo E6300
Motherboard: ASRock 4CoreDual-Sata2 (chipset: VIA Apollo PT880 Pro)
    RAM: 2x 1GB DDR2
    Graphics card: Asus EAH2600 512MB
    Windows XP Pro with SP2
I don't care about time CPU will spend to do the task - before the upgrade it tooks aprox. 5 hours to convert a video and now it tooks only 1h30m :-). What is really important is obtaining the most quality DVD video can be possible. Can you help me?
Perhaps someone already asked for something like my problem. If so, please excuse me and give me the link to that question.
Many thanks to all of you in advance.

    Dag Norum:
First of all, thank you for your quicly reply ;-)
Second, I'm very sorry to make a reply almost a month after your answer. The reason is that I went on holidays without an opportunity to test your tip.
I used Harm's link and than reached to a Bitrate of 8.0000 for all three fields (Min., Target and Max.) and that makes all the difference. Now I have a video with very good quality.
But I haven't tested your tip yet to see if that improves the video final quality.
I want to work always with the maximum quality, no matter what time is needed to convert the video and no matter the length (GB) it costs.
Do you think I can export to an uncompressed file (avi for windows and compressor set to none) and than make the Menus with Encore? It wouldn't be better work on Encore with an MPEG2 file? The DV compressor is MPEG2, isn´t it?
And why you suggested to not have the "Optimize stills" checked? This is to optimize the frames without movement, isn´t it? Many times I use photos inserted in the movie. This option isn't good for that?
Your last suggestion, to go directly from timeline to the end target (MPEG2) is much different than that I use (DV compressor)?
If you could answer my questions I would appreciate.
    Many thanks!
(sorry if my english isn't the better)

Sorry, I'd made a mistake.  When I answer to you I didn't realise that your sugestions was to AVI exportation and not to MPEG2.
Of course you are absolutely right: for an intermediate file, no compression is always better than some compression :-)
But my question about not have the "Optimize stills" checked remains. What does it makes, really?

  • Using ENCORE to burn straight to DVD without creating a menue.

An Adobe on-line training video said that a user could use Encore to burn an Adobe Premier CS4 project straight to DVD without creating a menue.  It said just go to FILE>EXPORT in PREMIER and click on EXPORT TO ENCORE.  However, that option does not show up when I click on file export.  Does anyone know why?

  • How to burn AVI on a DVD using iDVD

    Hello folks,
I have a number of old movies in AVI format. I can play these without any problems in QT on my Mac - I have Perian installed and Flip4Mac.
I open iDVD, then create a new project, add the AVI file, then iDVD starts crunching the file for a while (about one hour or so, depending on how long the movie is), then, when it's about to start burning it on the disk it quits with an error message saying something about 'error at multiplexing'.
I even tried to convert my AVI file into MOV (with this: http://www.macxdvd.com/mac-video-converter-pro/?run.mxconverter ) but I still have the same issue.
I know that I can burn it directly to a DVD using other programs (like Toast) but I am not willing to spend some more money for it. Ont he other hand, I want to add chapters and a simple menu, so that I can skip back and forth when needed.
To be noted that other projects coming from my camcorder are OK.
Any idea on how can this be acomplished?
Many thanks in advance for your help.
    L

Assuming the movie is not copy protected, you might have better luck with this free download from apple's web site before adding the file to iDvd:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
An AVI is a container, not a format; no single component or method will work for all AVIs
If you need help using mpegstream clip then simply use the search field on the upper right corner of this page.
Hope it helps but if not just come on back.

  • Workflow question - fastest workflow from AVI files to DVD?

I have recently purchased my first Mac (it is fantastic!). I am currently experimenting with both '08 and '06 iMovie.
Right now my main priority is creating individual DVD's of each of my tapes that I have previously captured via WinDV on an XP system. Those tapes are stored, each clip separately, via AVI files on external hard disks.
Now I would like to, as quickly as possible, use either version of iMovie to burn a DVD that simply includes all the clips from a given tape capture. The plan is that these will be simply playable versions (a playable backup, if you will) of all the clips on each tape - I'll come back later and do edits to create "finished" DVD's.
Any suggestions as to the most efficient and quickest way to create the DVD's? (I've downloaded Streamclip also, but am not sure whether that will help me out at this point or not)
    Thanks in advance.

Any suggestions as to the most efficient and quickest way to create the DVD's?
The most efficient work flow in terms of application use would likely be iMovie HD here. Assuming your AVI files are "playback" and "conversion" compatible with QT, then they will be automatically converted during file level import for use in whatever project compression format you create for editing. In addition, this work flow offers more in the way of "effects" if desired and allows you to chapter files for iDVD use internally rather than having to go through GarageBand. On the other hand, if you are working with very short source files requiring little or no editing and a minimum of titles, transitions and/or chaptering, then iMovie '08 may be faster in terms of actual editing speed. Both applications have their own strengths and weaknesses and you should probably try a test project with both so that in the future you can select the proper one according to the needs of any given project.

  • AVI Files in DVD Studio Pro come out with no sound

I tried putting some AVI files through compressor and then into DVD Studio Pro only...no sound. I've been told I should convert the files but I was wondering if there was any other way I could go about making DVDs out of these AVIs that would play on any player. Why is there no sound? How I make sure there is sound? Totally lost in this instance and any help would be appreciated. Thank you all.

My guess is that you may have the sound files, but not spotted them...
When you encode your video with Compressor it splits out the sound form the video, making 'elementary' streams for DVDSP. This is perfectly normal. In compressor, if you apply a standard preset for encoding you get to choose what sort of audio you want. If you didn't set up your audio encode then you may only have the video after all.
If so, go back to compressor and re-encode and make sure you get the audio out - in AC3 format. Bring that into DVDSP and all will be well.

  • How to burn 23 AVI files onto DVD?

I am trying to figure out how to make a DVD of a tv show season which has 23 episodes for my kids.
How can I make a DVD with all these?
Do i have to convert them first or create a project and drag the AVI files in?
    Thanks
    Patrick

    Hi RIPNHL2005
Welcome to apple discussions. If you find that the avi file/s will not work within iDvd directly (and some will not since avi is simply a container format) then the best way I find is to first convert them with an app like Mpeg streamclip. There are at least two web locations where you can download this freeware and they are shown below.
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
Assuming your episodes do not exceed 120 mins. per single layer dvd (or about twice that for dual layer media) then you can use iDvd thereafter.
However I do have an alternate suggestion also. I use software from Elgato / EyeTV3 in combination with EyeTV products to capture directly to my Hdd and then I can use Toast to burn them to Dvd thereafter. Works rather well and especially if I need to exceed 120 mins per dvd. Toast offers a fit to dvd option that you can't find within iDvd.

  • 2 avi files to DVD

    Hi
I need to transfer two large avi files to a DVD. I want the dvd to be able to play back on a DVD player, including my computer. If it helps, I have ffmpegx.
    Thanks!

I would try using iDVD. To make those two clips play without using a menu, do the following:
    1. Create a new iDVD project.
    2. Click on the "Map" Button.
    3. Drag both clips into the box that says "Drag clips here to play when the DVD is inserted"
If you want to go ahead and create a menu, then by all means, create a menu, and to add the clips to the DVD, just drag them into the iDVD window. Make sure not to drag them into the "Drop Zones". Those are reserved for pictures or small video clips (several seconds long) to add to the design of the theme.
If your clips total between 1 and 2 hours in length, then make sure to go to into iDVD preferences under the iDVD menu, and select "Best Quality". Under the setting "Best Performance", you can only burn up to 1 hour of video to a single-layer DVD.
    Hope this Helps

  • Putting .avi files onto DVD

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum for this question (and I can't seem to find any other threads about it), but I have a bunch of TV Shows in .avi format on my computer. I'd like to be able to place them on a DVD where I can simply watch them on my TV or through a DVD drive. Is there a way to do that with iDVD or is it iMovie that I need? Thanks for any help!

I might be able to help...
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2091550&#2091550
a post discussing playing .avi files. Download the divx component to enable Quicktime to play majority of .avi files. Anything that Quicktime still can't play can be played in VLC.
I had 3 .avi movies, one widescreen, and couldn't burn them in iDVD. They previewed, tho, so I converted the widescreen into .mov using Quicktime (Pro only?). Quality was still good. Without converting the other 2 .avi files, I easily burned all 3 (1 .mov and 2 .avi) using iDVD.
My theory is that iDVD can burn .avi files, just as long as 1)they play perfectly in Quicktime and 2)at least one .mov file is included in the burning.
But I've no idea why this worked, and it was the only time I tried it, so it might not work. Although the 3 .avi files were exact same format (DivX 6.0)
You can use an iPod converter, like iSquint, to convert any .avi file into iPod format, which obviously plays in quicktime. Just make sure H.264 is unchecked, since it degrades quality for TV viewing.
oh yeah, iDVD burning and Quicktime converting takes really long! I had to leave my iMac on overnight once for each.
    Hope this helped
