AVI Support for FCP

I am a film major and I have been trying for weeks to edit an AVI file in FCP but it keeps telling me that there was an unknown file type. My friend has absolutely no problem editing AVIs in FCP. I can't figure it out. Is it because I have regular QuickTime? He doesn't think he has QuickTime Pro, so what am I doing wrong?
I tried to use Compressor to make the AVI into an H264, an mpeg-2, a DVNTSC... no luck with any of them. I've tried different types to make sure it's not an AVI, too. It keeps telling me that it can't convert. I don't understand why not, but it doesn't even seem to try once I submit. It just says that it can't convert within 10 seconds of submitting. I've tried everything I can think of, even AVI to mpeg and mov converters, but none of them work.
How do you get an AVI into FCP?

How do you get an AVI into FCP?
AVI is a container, not a format, and some formats can't be used in Mac OS X through any means. Installing Perian and MPEG Streamclip may enable its import or conversion to a format Final Cut Pro can handle.
QuickTime Pro doesn't add support for any additional movie formats; it provides editing capabilities.

  • TechSmith Ensharpen AVI support in FCP

I spoke with the support folks at TechSmith, and they told me that in previous versions of FCP (pre-7), there was support for exporting to AVI using the Ensharpen encoder (currently, you can only go to QT). He made it sound like the support issue was on Apple's side - something changed in FCP7?
    Any corrorboration on this?
Any idea if Apple might through this back into FCP on an update?

There is no FCP 7 (until maybe 2008)...are you sure
    you don't mean QT 7?
I've not used it, but I've got AVI export on FCP

Yeah, oops. I meant in the most recent FC. 5.1, I think? I've got the AVI export option, but the TechSmith Ensharpen codec doesn't show up as an option.
I've gone with Flip4Mac instead, and it's been working very well.

  • Support for FCP 4.1 on iMac (Latest)

I have successfully loaded FCP 4.1 but when I go to start it it tells me "AGP graphics card" is missing. Do I have to upgrade FCP? I hope not as my pocket is empty just now.

The man in the apple store quite explicitly stated that my machine was the right one for FCP so heads are going to roll.
Just to check, did you tell him that you wanted to run Final Cut Pro 4? Or did you just ask about "Final Cut Pro" without specifying a version? I ask because your iMac will indeed run Final Cut Pro 5.1 or the new Final Cut Pro 6 (from Final Cut Studio 2), but FCP 5.0 and earlier are not supported on the Intel-based Macs at all. If you did indeed say FCP 4 when you asked, then you have a legitimate beef with the guy in the Store. But if you just asked about "Final Cut", then what he told you was correct, if not covering all possible cases.

  • Has Apple completely dropped support for FCP 7 ?

My search of the Pro Software "support" already suggests the answer, but maybe I'm just too incredulous to believe it. OK, I get that they really like FCP X and want everyone to migrate to it, but man, have they even been reading their press?? So they are trying to force us to a very poor alpha release of the new world order, but what about the extensive community of users who've faithfully hung in with them through the development of the earlier versions?
Look, I really don't want to turn this into one of many rants about FCP x (lower case intended). I expect a lot of the problems we're reading about will eventually get fixed and when they do, I for one feel like I'll like it and will make the leap once they do.
What about all the demos, instructional videos, how-to advise and legacy community blog stuff for the substantial community who are waiting to see before jumping into a yet to be tested and proven new platform. If they wanted to bail on the pro community, they should have just admitted it and done so. I would have respected them for that. But this is just insulting...
Am I missing the FCP 7 Suite support or have I just encountered a big poke in the eye?

First, I guess I really did sound like a rant on FCP X - Sorry...
Second, I'm referring to the community discussions and application tutorials for FCS stuff to get through a basic use of a tool such as Motion, Color and to a much lesser extent, FCP 7. I'll check the link...
I only do rough cuts on bigger projects that I hand off to a real editor for finish out. I also do a lot of work for non-profits so where there is little budget available, they are stuck with me for cheap editing (lol)
thanks for your comments all, but Jason was most on target.

  • Converting uncompressed AVI files for FCP?

I recently had 30 reels of old 8mm film footage from the 50's and 60's converted to digital and I now have a hard drive with all of the footage converted to uncompressed AVI files.  These are extremley large files as one 2 minute and 38 second clip is 4.45 gigs.
I want to bring them into Final Cut Pro to edit them but retain as much quality and picture as I can.  I am going to use Mpeg Streamclip to convert the AVI files to quicktime Mov. files but what compression setting and frame size should I use when converting them to Mov. files for best results?  As far as frame size, should I use 648 X 486 4:3 aspect ratio or 720 X 486 unscaled?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Given the material, standard ProRes or even ProRes LT (if you have FCP v7) is fine.
ProRes HQ is intended for 35mm film out and/or 2k video. It is a waste of file space and processing overhead for your purposes.

  • I get the error message in QuickTime "operation stopped the operation is not supported for this media" most times when I try and export an .AVI file as something else (.m4v). I have not touched the file in any way (no trimming, clipping or other editing)

I get the error message in QuickTime "operation stopped the operation is not supported for this media" most times when I try and export an .AVI file as something else (e.g. .m4v). I have not touched the file in any way (no trimming, clipping or other editing), all I want QuickTime to do is export the file in a compressed format. Bizzarely, if I shutdown and open QuickTime many times I can occasionally export a clip as another format (maybe one in 10 times). I have seen that other users have had a similar problem after clipping files in QuickTime but this seems to be a slightly different bug in that all I do is open the file and then try and export the file as is - either way, this is a very annoying bug

@Z_B-B, thank you for taking the time to respond to my cry for help. However, the link you supplied does not address the problem: I am not trying to export from Final Cut Pro to QuickTime, I am trying to export from QuickTime to the rest of the world (like people's iPhones and Ipads) in .m4v format (so I am not emailing my freinds such huge files).
If I were to spend hundreds of Dollars on a copy of Final Pro I could export directly from there and not have to bother with QuickTime, but I do not take enough video clips to justify the cost. I must say that I never had any of these problems before I decided to switch from Snow Leopard to Mountai Lion.

  • No support for avi video files in symbian belle

well, the os is super impressive and the video player too.. But there is a problem while playing avi files. There is no preinstalled support for this type of file. While mp4 works fine without any problems. (i'm talking about nokia 600,603,700,701,n8,,etc)

Yeah, there are some issues for some codecs. But you should be fine for aac/xvid files. I can run them without any problem. Also i can run .mkv files.

  • FCP support for DVCPRO 720p50 ??

After weeks of research into the Panasonic HVX200, I finally bought one -
Fabulous camera - but what a pity one of the most important codecs (for me) isn't supported by FCP.
I had no idea any interval footage I shot would come out as 720p50 even if the camera's set up for 720p25.
(I see 720p60 is fully supported).
In August, Shane was under the impression it would be out "VERY soon"

Well, it's December now, does anyone have any idea how long soon could be?
It's a bit like buying a car and then finding there's no reverse gear!
Maybe it's my fault for not making certain every codec on the HVX is supported by FCP!
Any helpful suggestions will be appreciated - and if anyone has any experience of P2 Log (or similar) I'd love to hear from them.

There was a FCP Supermeet at IBC in Amsterdam last September.
Apple representatives were at the meet, and indicated somewhat vaguely that native editing would be supported.
Whether that will be done or not remains to be seen, as well as when and if the revised version of FCS will be released.
There is a video of the presentations at LAFCPUG.org that you can view.

Actually, I prefer working in pro res HQ due to its 10-bit and better color space capabilities.
    HDD space is cheap.
But it's your call, and remember that if it is supported, expect to get the fast CPU you can. It just won't work on anything but.

  • Macally drops support for Post-Op/iMedia FCP Keyboard on Intels

Though I doubt you can buy one anymore, and Post-Op the company I paid $180.00 to, no longer sells them, I thought I would post this info for those using it now, or finding an old one on e-bay.
PRODUCT: Post-Op EZ keyboard is just a repackaged Macally iMedia Key keyboard. You used the Macally iMedia software to program the custom button along the top, and you could program an eject button, which the new Mac Pros need, (though F12 would work for one optical bay). While the keys still work for input, without updated software you can't program the buttons now on Intel Tiger or Intel Leopard. I wrote them and this was the Christmas cheer message I received.
    Dear Customer,
    Thank you for contacting us.
I am sorry that we'll not have Intel Mac driver support for this keyboard.
For Eject, you may press and hold the F12 key for 1 second to open/close the CD tray.
If you have any question, please let me know. Wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,

  • Import 32 GB of AVI files into FCP X?

Hello, I need to import 32 GB of AVI files into FCP X. It seems iMOVIE has no problem accepting AVI's, but FCP X says they are not "importable" (as I believe AVI is not a supported format in FCP X).
Can someone please recommend the best way for me to import 32GB of AVI into FCP X? With brief research, I believe Mpeg Stream Clip (?) would be an option, but I want something efficient and will be able mass convert if necessary (don't want to convert each individual clip).
Also what would be the best filetype to convert the AVI's into?
Any prompt insight would really be appreciated, thanks in advance.
    GSI

Well, I've got time if thats what it takes.
My goal is to convert the 32gb of "AVI files" into something compatible in FCP X without reducing the video quality. I don't know a specific file type, I just imported them from MINI DV into Sony Vegas (and then just dragged the files from Vegas onto an external and now just want them to get into FCP X)
I just downloaded Stream Clip, added 100 clips (4gb) of avi clips to batch list, but am having trouble converting. I tried converting to DV or Quicktime and the response is "Error: Can't create the MOV file"

  • Support for RAW Video and Image Sequences

Being a stills photographer who moved into video some years back, I'm very interested in the direction Lightroom is going with regards to video support. I haven't tried it yet but I wondered if LR4 supports Red R3D files? And would it perhaps support other future RAW video formats from the likes of Canon and Sony? It would seem like the perfect application, perhaps intergrating with Premiere in a similar way to RedCine with FCP. Be great to be able to log footage, orginize it into bins and do basic colour correction in LR, edit the project in Premiere and re-touch in After Effects.
Another task LR would seem ideally suited to is combining image sequences into timelapse video. Shooting timelapse as an image sequence on a DSLR is pretty much standard practice these days; and I've used LR to colour correct, crop and scale my sequences (before fitting them together in Quicktime) for years now. It would be fantastic to be able to preview the clip and export the video (as DPX, ProRes or DNxHD) from within Lightroom.
These are obviously fairly long term wishes. In the short term though, the video features are pretty much useless to me without support for exporting ProRes and DNxHD files. With this LR becomes a powerful asset manager that could be used to collect together footage from multiple sources/codecs and transcode it all for editing. As mentioned in a previous thred, XML support would make it even more useful in this context. There is definitly a gap in the market for an application than can handle this kind of task well.
With other manufactures floundering or neglecting their professional user base, Adobe would seem poised to take the video post crown. I wonder if Lightroom could be part of the takeover?

As I understand it Andy, its intention is to remain a photographers program, not a videographers program.  The basic video features are available for lightweight management of videos coming from digital cameras, but it's not going too much further than that at this point in time.  Of course that may change in the future, but we'll all have to wait and see on that one.

  • How to build a plug-in for FCP

I want to build an export plug-in for FCP. It is a little similar to Automatic duck export plug-in. I want to export sequence in my own format.
The version of Final Cut Pro is 6.0.
I downloaded FxPlug SDK, but it is only about video effect, not what i want.
And I didn’t find any other documents about how to build an export plug-in for FCP.
Who has some related documents or can support me on this?
I will pay for the help if i can afford it.

I don't own Automatic Duck so I don't know how that particular application goes about doing this, but the only way I can think of doing it is through a QuickTime Export Component.

dpreview.com has a compare cameras feature that lets you compare up to 20 models at once. You just could load a bunch in and see if it gives you what you want.

  • CS 5.5.2 and still no GTX480 support for Mecury Engine? What are you guys smoking when supporting 470

Never buying a Adobe product again. I'm in supporting for death of Flash. This is gone too far. I'm pissed to the core with Adobe. I would rather have FCP do the job than this crap where i don't get support.

    Meetajhu,
MPE with GPU acceleration does indeed speed up both renders and encoding (when exporting from Premiere Pro 5/5.5) by a factor of generally between 1.5 and 1.8. See the following thread to better understand what I mean by this:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3459631?tstart=0
I just ran a test with all files on a single drive and to export 7.25 minutes of AVCHD to MPEG2-DVD (NTSC, progressive, wide, HQ) and comparing HW assisted vs. SW only I get:
    w/ GTX 580 = 90% CPU + 54% GPU (takes 1:21)
    software only = 98% CPU + 0% GPU (takes 2:00)
As you and others point out, when using MPE w/ GPU can speed up the time required for "Timeline Rendering" by up to a factor of infinity, but that can be useless if only doing a "render effects in timeline" (Enter key) is not enough rendering for your hardware to provide smooth playback from the timeline!
For example, if you have a timeline that show fully "red", as the AVCHD example above does on my PC, then PPro will force a partial render before it will even play back the clip (even though on my PC it plays flawlessly by simply pressing the spacebar). Then, when I shift over to "MPE with GPU accelaration" the whole timeline shows a yellow bar indicating that it is ready for playback without any rendering.
Finally, try to give PPro a chance; FCP had years of being at the top, but it is PPro's time now!
    Regards,
    Jim
