AVI to DVD

Issue: No tool seems to convert the
Tina avi-file in the right way.
My goal is to soon cool down and burn
that avi to a DVD and watch it
smoothly on the telly. Yes, the
Philips DVP5500S-player deals with
MPEG2, MPEG1 and MPEG4. The footage is
done in real 16:3 with a 3CCD cam.
Plan A is to use Adobe Premiere CS3
(AP) and export Tina to Adobe Encore
(EN) for rendering/conversion and
DVD-burning. There are no menus in
the edited film. During the build
process EN gives up and leaves a PGC
error message well known and mentioned
in several posts in Adobe´s forums.
Plan B must be to convert one or two
files and burn them to a dvd disk.
Well, AP/EN produces two files
Tina.M2V (mpeg)560 MB and Tina.WAV 215
MB. Question 1: Can those two files be
of any help in achieving my goal?
In AP I export Tina as Movie with DV
PAL compressor, Microsoft DV AVI, Bit
Depth: Using project setting, Optimize
Stills, Uncompressed audio.
After rendering this brought forth
19:36 minutes and 3,68 GB Tina.AVI,
1536 kbit/sec, compression MC_DVD,
video sampling 24 bits. I simply
burned this file to a 4,7 GB DVD,
naively hoping it should play, but it
did not. Question 2: Why?
During the last week I have tested
Tina.AVI together with more than a
dussin AVI to DVD tools, Avi2DvD, AVS,
Cucusoft, Debut, DVD Flick, DVDforger,
FormatFActory, X2DVD, Win AVI, you name
them.
The worst result is when nothing at
all happens when I insert the disk,
not even a loading sign appears on the
t eve screen. The best is with WinAVI
when Tina loads and starts playing but
slows down and freezes after 20
seconds.
I have also (in AP) exported Tina to
Adobe Media Encoder using those
settings
No filters, Video codec: MainConcept
MPEG Video, PAL, 720*576, 25 fps,
Field order: Lower, Quality 3, Wide
16:9
VBR, 1 pass, Min 1,50, Target 4,00,
Max 7,00 Mbps
Audio: 48 kHz, 16 bit, Codec: PCM
Audio Multiplexor: None
This generates four new Tina files
XMP, M2V.XMPSES, WAV and M2V, the
first two are some Adobe metadata.
Question 3: Can those files be of any
use for me?
In previous versions of AP one could
rather easily produce working dvd:s
The file structure on those is the one
with video_ts and audio_ts under the
root and then bup, iso and vob-files.
Question 4: How does this nice working
_ts structure relates to the type of
conversion and settings made in
different converters?

G4 and burning .avi to DVD No Can Do HELP Before Christmas

I have a G4/500mhz and I bought a OWC Mercury 1.2ghz processor upgrade and also bought 2x's 512 ram = 1gig(maxed out)
I'm a Virgin @ making movies from .avi files need help bad!
Now I tried to burn a .avi using Toast it would start to Encode and everytime the encoding would get towards the end Toast would crash, when I put the .avi into iDVD it said it was to large to fit onto a DVD as I stated above this is all new to me.
I even made a seperate Account for burning the .avi to DVD thinking that it was using a lot of Ram and Processor and if anything came up example: Software Update, System Optimizer, any tool my Mac would give me a kernal panic and I would let my Mac run overnight so no one would try to use the Mac,
my main question is what can I do or is there anything that I can I do so I can burn .avi's to DVD using my system?
I talked to a friend of mine he has a PB G4-133mhz and does this all the time

iDVD will not work with PC-based .avi media; you would need to convert it to dv I(f that is possible) in order for iDVD to work with it.
You may want to post in the iDVD forum; I could not begin to tell you whether or what you would need to convert it, or if indeed to is possible without substantial loss of quality.
If you can open the file in iMovie, you may be able to export it to iDVD.
If you friend does exactly this, I would suggest you ask him/her the precise software/procedure being used.

what makes you thinking that?
avi is just a media-container, a 'wrapper', no format, no codec.
depending on what codec(s) are in use, iDVD or other DVD-creator-apps can transcode 'out of the box'.
teaching the Quicktime-engine new codecs is done by the free tool www.perian.org
if your files need conversion, the free tool Mpeg Streamclip is highly recommended.
paying licences is only needed, when wmv is in use - Microsoft likes to get paid, if you use its proprietary codecs outside Windows (flip4mac is a MS-owned company).
most $$ converters on the market are based upon the free ffmpeg-library, so you pay for a nice GUI, some one-click-convenience. but the free tools, mentioned above, do same ...

Fastest Avi to Dvd burner?

Hi all, first of all I'm a first timer here and I apologize if this is the wrong area for this topic (So many categories and I don't know where to post this, so I went for a place which has the most recent post activity)
I'm a new mac user and have been researching for the best, most importantly, fastest avi to dvd movie burner. I have a new mac pro 3.0ghz and would really love to take advantage of this by using the best software available. As I'm typing this, I'm testing Xilisoft DVD Creator trial (yes, I dl'd the intelmac version) and it's been running for 45minutes now with 68% done so far. Now, I'm not completely sure if this is slow, average, or fast for my system. This is where (hopefully) some of you guys can help me out with suggestions, advice, etc. So many software out there that I'd rather hear from you guys.
Also, the avi that's currently burning is only 2000mb.
Any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks a bunch.

Visualhub (google it) is a nice converter app to get from avi to dvd structure. Then you can burn w/Disc Utility or Toast or... (Converting via Toast is a bit slower -at least on my machine.) Toast is a nice burner app (I use it consistantly, and never use my internal for anything other than copying disc to disc w/ Toast or doing reinstalls of the OS itself), and it will convert files, but Visualhub will do more in the conversion area. As far as the fastest burner, any Mac built-in is speed-controlled. I use a flashed external Pioneer which will run at a much higher speed than my internal, and also is able to read/work with discs from any zone. The Pioneer 111 needs a pc to flash it, but is a very good and fast burner, and fairly cheap to buy w/an enclosure. Also, use good media (I use Taiyo Yuden, but any high-end media should do) to avoid making coasters.

Well, DVDs use MPEG-2 video, so that's what you need to convert to. Unsurprisingly, you'll need software that specializes in DVD creation - Toast, Compressor, Adobe Encore are the three main active programs at this point. iDVD will do it if you can track down a copy.

AVI to DVD, is Toast the best video quality I can get?

I have a bunch of DIVX AVI's, DVD quality, to convert to DVD, I know it can be done in iMovie exported to iDVD. But that takes too long and I don't want a Menu. I've been using Toast on my MINI 1.25 but it takes forever to encode. I've seen encoding take up to, but not limited to 6hrs.
I am not as much worried about the time it takes as I usually do this as I go to bed, in the morning it's done. However, the picture quality is not as good as it was on my MAC, or the camera. I have all settings to best picture quality, taking the most time encoding.
What am I doing wrong if anything? Is toast the best I can get?
When I had a basement Windows Server, I used Roxio's Media Creator 7 and it had a DIVX AVI to DVD converter (also took hours to encode), but at least the picture quality was better if not the same as a DVD.
PLEASE HELP.

Bumping threads is considered very rude.
divx AVI's are highly compressed files and will take as long to uncompress them as it would to have made the divx avi in the first place.
It takes an imac G5 about 6 hours to rip and compress a DVD into an mp4, xvid or divx file.
It takes my 2ghz dual core intel imac approx 50 mins to rip and compress a DVD.
Unfortunately until Roxio bring out a intel native version of Toast you wont see speeds like that converting divx to dvd.
As far as quality goes you wont gain any quality at converting divx back into DVD. divx is lossy compression.
In my opinion it a waste of time and effort converting divx to dvd, it is easier to purchase a DVD player that can play all formats of movies. You can get dvd divx players in the UK for as little as £30.

Burn avi to dvd using idvd

i dont have idvd, i dont even have a mac so this may be a really stupid question, but is it possible to convert an avi file and then burn it to dvd using idvd?
for example if a had a film in avi could i put it on a dvd to watch on a dvd player?

It is possible to put an .avi video on DVD, but it has to be converted into DVD format (which is mpeg-2). Another wrinkle is that .avi is a so-called "container" format and it is more or less difficult to convert .avi files depending on the format (codec) inside the container.
iDVD is fairly limited in the types of video formats it can convert (the latest version is the most flexible). If you have a very specific video you're wanting to convert, and thinking about buying a Mac, you could take it to an Apple store and see if iDVD recognizes the format. Alternatively, try visiting a Mac user group and see if they can be of assistance.

AVI to DVD using iDVD cuts off sides of the movie

I have various avi movies and while trying to burn them to DVD using iDVD I have been experiencing the following problem: The left, right, top and bottom of the movie are cut off (imagine putting two layers of duct tape on you screen making your screen smaller and then watching a movie on it).
I have a widescreen TV and have tried both the widescreen and standard format with little success. The only difference in on the standard version I can see the entire menu (in the wide screen version, oddly enough, the screen is cut off).
Is there something on iDVD I can do to adjust the ratio to shrink the movie to fit the screen, or do I have to format the movie somehow before bringing it into iDVD.
I appreciate any advice or help anyone can offer.

The problem with that is the green screen I get if I add it to the slide show.
That's the first time I've heard of that. Thanks for the feedback. There's are two possible workarounds if you want to try them:
1 - open the movie in Quicktime Player and export as full quality DV and use that in the slideshow.
2 - if you've installed Perian on your Mac uninstall it, save the iDVD project as a disk image and see if the green is still there or not.
There's a third way, with Quicktime Pro and an Applescript, to mask the movie so that it will be in the TV Safe area. If you find you want to try post back.

Hi I would like to burn a playable dvd with a movie in .avi format.
avi is 1.7 GB large, once imported in idvd is larger than 9 GB. How can I shrink it to fit a single layer DVD?

soo, we're in trouble: iDVD just accept files of max 120min length....
iDVD is "just" an authoring app, creating from dv videos, stills and music some marvelous goodlooking video DVDs....
iM is an edit app.. not a shrinker...
I do own DVD2one, which IS a shrinker... but it expects a dvd or an .img of a dvd...
these "shared" music, video, dvds are not sooo popular on Macs... because, many people CREATING such stuff and livin' from do it on Mac...
there's a free tool called ffmpeg, but that is not a beginners toy... it allows to set bitrates manually to make even 12h fit on one dvd... ok, looks horrible, but possible....

Expert coaster maker needs help! AVI plays - DVD issues??

The problem is that there seems to be a piece of footage that doesn't want to play right on the TV/DVD. It plays perfect in AVI format and through Encore preview (also Premiere).
Not all the video/audio is bad and stuttering - just a few parts. But, these parts pause/stop/start the playback.
History of the footage:
Four DV tapes imported Used Premiere (all products latest CS3 with latest updates) to edit video (multiple camera angles, etc)
Exported attempts: Microsoft DV AVI, Uncompressed Microsoft AVI and direct to Encore
I've even just worked with the problem section with same results.
Note: all footage plays perfectly within Premiere, Encore and Windows media player.
There is nothing different about this piece of footage - in fact it's within a large clip that plays right up to the problem.
Any ideas?
If there is other information I can offer please tell me what it is.

Try using RW - no coasters.
Is it the exact same section of footage that causes problems every time? Or are there minor variations?
Try different hardware/software DVD players.
Try different blank media.
Try burning at a slower speed.
Try building a disc image, then burning that through another program like
ImgBurn

Classic problem: .avi to dvd

hi guys, im sort of a newbie in macs and looking around the forums, i still can't find an understandable explanation about the problem with burning a .avi into a playable dvd.
i tried converting to DV, with a free app someone recommended here (MPEG streamclip) but the thing is the resulting archive was almost 8 GB and it took forever to get it converted...so that wont fit in a regular DVD i guess...
then i tried converting to .mov, which i did (and it also took a lot of time, about 7,8 hours) and once it had it (4 Gb file) , i added the file to my iDVD project. Once i burned the dvd(took a lot of time again), my custom-made dvd menu worked, so did the slideshow, but when i pressed play movie, the dvd player went crazy, made some noises, and nothing happened...sounded like when you put an mp3 cd on a non-mp3 player, unable to recognize the format. i must say though, the file was unable to be seen on the iDVD preview.i thought it might be a bit too heavy to preview it.
what is the matter??? im pretty sure im missing some information, but as i recall, doing this on a PC with nero was simple and quick...i refuse to believe doing it on my beautiful mac might just be a pain in the as*.
i would thank any reply, but please keep it relatively simple, im no expert im afraid.

* iDVD uses internal a format called "dv" (as on miniDV tapes); that is ~13Gb per hour...
* iDVD is an encoder:
it converts such files into another format, for videoDVDS, which is "mpeg2", which has ~2GB per hour....
* iDVD cares for length, not size...
stay under 120min project size, and you're done...
8GB video? easy... a 30GB iMproject fits on a 4.4GB disk...
* any conversion is a process of high computation; on my old and reliable Cube, I have to calculate with a factor of 8x - 10x of project length....
* .avi is just a container, as .mov in the Mac world;
a container can … ehm, contain many formats... you haven't told us, what is inside that .avi (your source could tell/QTpro offers in the Apple-J dialog in-depth info...)
* there's a new converter on the market (no personal hands-on experience!), claiming to convert with a single click avi>>DVD...
VisualHub, if you do need often a conversion avi>DVD on a Mac, give it a try....

Burning avi to dvd

I'm not sure where this question belongs..anyway, I've downloaded a 460MB avi file that has video but no audio. I downloaded the codec VLC and got sound. I'd like to burn this file to a dvd but when I do I get no sound. How can I get this avi file to burn to a dvd with sound? I'm using toast titanium to burn.

follow FShippey's advise and download Visual Hub, it is indeed very cheap and the capabilities of this program are great. I have managed to get 5 hours of very good quality film burned to one DVD which plays on a standard DVD player and TV.
As well as conversions from and to AVI, MP2, MP4, iPod, PSP, DV, DVD, WMV, Flash. The work is done quickly and sofar I have not had any failures.
This application is definitely one for every video workers toolbox!

Burning movies (.avi) to dvd

well what i need to do is burn a .avi movie onto a dvd so that i can watch it on my dvd player in my livingroom. i asume i need a conversion program to convert the .avi to some format of which i dunno. then what do i need to burn the movie onto a viewable dvd?

Is this a divx .avi?
If so, do you have the divx codec installed?

You might also check out divx doctor, which will "fix" or convert the file to a .mov which can be easily used in idvd.

can any off you recommend a good program like vso convertxtodvd on the mac ? i.e one that converts avi to be able to watch on dvd players on tv
its frustrating to convert then separately burn - especially now that idvd is not shipped with new macs !

Converting AVI to DvD

Please could someone tell how do you convert AVI so I can play it on my DvD player? I don't have DvD studio pro.

Use 'Toast' to burn your DVD. Choose 'Video' at the top of the window. Choose 'DVD-Video' at the left of the window. Drag your avi file into the panel. 'Toast' does all kinds of cool things.
