AVI trouble

Am trying to play AVI files in quicktime but I keep on getting told that I need to have the correct codec to play. I get rerouted to a site of codecs and have no idea which is the best one to go for to enable me to play my movie files.
Can anyone out there help me at all? Would really like a codec for quicktime so I may edit within this later.
Many thanks,
Stevie.

For editing purposes (and the Export dialog previews) the default frame is that currently selected in the timeline. Wherever the cursor position in the file timeline that image will show as the preview.
You can also use QT Pro to "create" a Poster Frame and it can be any frame in the file (View menu/Set Poster Frame. Again, the cursor position in the timeline determines what this image will be. This feature requires a "Save As" (to make a new file in the .mov container) or a "Save" to make this part of the current file.
This preview image will now "travel with" the file and becomes the default Finder image when navigating folders.
You can also use this image to help identify (custom icon) your movies when viewed in the FInder.
Position the cursor in the timeline on a frame of the file you wish to use. Command-C (copy). Switch to the Finder and do a "Get Info" on the file. Highlight the small Q (upper left of the Get Info window) and it will outline. Command-C (paste) and your new frame becomes a custom icon in the Finder.
Great way to help you pick the correct file from dozens of movies.
You're correct. I am a QuickTime Pro "genius" and even wrote a 300 page PDF that describes these tricks (and hundreds more). Click on my name (above and left) to learn some more about me.

  • IMovie saving as .avi trouble

I've got two projects that I need final editing done on a PC (can't help it, not in my control). I saved one as an .avi, and had no problems. The second and longer (19:33mins) project is giving me all kinds of problems.
I used the same settings, same compression, same aspect ration, same sound settings...the works. I don't get an error message. What I do get is only the first 41s as an .avi The point where it stops is not a scene change, or transistion.
Is there somewhere I can find an iMovie troubleshooting solution? I've looked all over the i-net for a solution or similar problem on mac-forums and the like. It seems many have problems playing or capturing .avi files, but not saving as them. Am I the only person with this problem?
Saving as .dv, .mpg, .mov is fine. But I need it in .avi to keep up the quality. The vids will go on my local public access tv station, if....

  • Trouble with .avi movies on newest MacBook Air

I am very happy with my macboorAir but have trouble viewing .avi movies. I downloaded DIVX Pro (paid) and some movies converted from .avi to dvix in the free version of the program. However, after installing the DIVX Pro, the converter states it has converted the film correctly, however it is not stored anywhere, not traceable. Any suggestions to solve this problem?

Your question is very confusing and messy.
Best I can recomend is to download Perian, which is free codec pack for QuickTime - http://perian.org/
    or/and
Download opensource VLC Player, which plays practicaly anything that can be played

  • Trouble with DV Type 2 AVI audio in Premiere Elements 11

Please see the two screen captures below.  G-Spot says my clip is DV Type 2 AVI which Premiere Elements 11 supposedly handles well.  G-Spot says both the appropriate audio and video codecs are available on my Windows 7 x64 PC.  Main Concept DV codec is installed.  The camera was a Sony Handycam vintage 2000 and the clip captured by Firewire.
When I load the clip into Elements 11, the audio is compressed in length relative to the video.  I get about 11 seconds of high pitched warbling and then no sound for the balance of my 67 second clip.  You can see the audio profile flatten after 11 seconds in the Timeline view.  I do notice that the audio preset for Elements is 48000 sample rate, and my clip is at 44100.  If this is an issue I do not know how to fix it in Elements.
The clip plays fine, audio and video properly synced, in Windows Media Player and AVS Video Creator.
I am able to use AVS Video Creator to strip the audio from the clip, output it as a .wav file, and use it to replace the audio track in Elements. However, I have hundreds of clips to edit; this method will cause substantial brain damage.
Is there something I can do to get Premiere Elements 11 to process the audio properly?

    Harmon,
    Great news!
Not sure why that other app. would Encode the Audio to MP3, as that is non-standard (though MP3 is a fairly common format/CODEC - just not in a DV-AVI).
Sorry to hear that you have that extra step, with those particular DV-AVI's, but at least you do have a workaround for them.
Not sure if you will be outputting to DV-AVI, but if you do, the Audio choice would be that of the DV-AVI files that do work - PCM/WAV @ 48KHz 16-bit. That will create files, that are about as "plain vanilla," as it gets with PrE.
    Good luck and happy editing,
    Hunt

  • Strange playback trouble with some avi files

I downloaded a whole season of a tv show in avi format (mpeg layer 3, 48khz, 29.97 fps). Most of the files play fine, but several of them seem corrupt in a way I've never seen before.
They don't generate an error message ... but they stop playing for several seconds at a time, the audio goes off or out of sync, and the entire picture comes and goes, in a way that I can only describe as a mix of pixelation, jpeg-like edge artifacts, and acid trip-like traces and afterimages. Needless to say, it's hard to watch.
I tried exporting the movies from QT pro. No help. And of course I restarted quicktime several times. Other movies continue to play fine.
Any thoughts? Is it possible to fix these files or are they gone?

The format of file you gave is just for audio part, you didn't give us what kind of codec the .avi file have?
And it's nothing to do with QuickTime Pro I cam assume you that.
It probably has broken inside the .avi file somewhere.

  • Trouble encoding AVI file into proper FLV. *Please Help*

I have a small AVI file with uncompressed video.
CS3 converts it perfectly to an FLV accept for the fact that
    I can't output to 16:9
CS4 can and does convert it and keeps the 16:9 aspect ratio.
The problem is CS4 adds all kinds of metadata crap which I
    want completely removed.
How can i go about doing this????
    onXMPData
    liveXML
    <?xpacket
that junk. it's ruining my video.
CS3 would have been absolutely perfect if not for the 4:3
    constraint.

You can modify the preset to not export the XMP metadata.
If you have the export settings panel open - there will be a
little icon to the right of Filter, Format, Video, Audio and
Others. Click on that icon and un-check Include Source XMP
    Metadata.

  • Importing .avi file troubles

Ok, I have only three more videos that I need to import to imovie HD 6, but they refuse to import. I get 'The File Cannot be Imported: Unknown Error' and the only difference in these clips to the ones I've already imported is that they're 350 MB compared to the others which were 175 MB. Any knowledge on this problem would be appreciated.

Yeah, AVI is not a movie format. It is actually a container. There are a few options depending on the software you have. For best results use something like 'Visual Hub' to convert the files to DV format, however, you will need a lot of disc space to do this. I hour of DV is around 15-20GB. You can also use Quicktime Pro (if you have it) to convert it MOV, but the quality is not as good and Quicktime is slooooow. Neither of these options are free. Another free option is ffmpegX.

  • Having trouble with .avi files

I use quicktime 7.0.3. I noticed that I cannot watch .avi files. everytime i try playing .avi files, quicktime brings me to an internet site where i can download fifferent addons or softwares to play the .avi files. i tried downloading two of them but nothing happened. why is this so? what specific codec or software shoud i download. please advise. i use a panther ibook g4. thanks.
    mike

.AVI is a 'wrapper' for a variety of encoding methods - not all of which are supported under QT 7.
If you just want to view the files, I suggest you try the VLC Media Player at http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

  • Having trouble opening avi files

Hi I just got loads of avi movies from a friend but they won't open, he's an XP user and the files are mainly .avi
When I try to launch one it gives me the error message that some software is missing and takes me to the QT w/s where there are many options although it doesn't tell me which update I need.
If I try to open the files in real player it opens a white screen with no picture or sound.
    Does anybody have any idea?

You gents need to download some of the more common codecs to allow QT to play those AVI files.
DivX and XviD for video; perhaps AC3 for audio. All for intel. Search this forum or google it. This question has been dealt with numerous times.
As AVI is an all-in-one container, there are exceptions, but DivX alone will give you playability for a large majority of those files.

  • Adobe Premiere Elements 9 AVI file trouble

I recently had to re-install Adobe Premiere Elements 9.0 to my new hard drive.
All of a sudden I am no longer able to import AVI files.
I have done this literally thousands of times in the past and now I am prevented from doing so.
There is probably a simple fix and I'm not sure about Codecs nor do I need to learn about them,
I just want to import some simple AVI clips. help. HELP. HELP ME PLEASE before I go mad
    (I am a windows user)

Thanks for getting back to us on this issue.
Based on what you just wrote, let explore the following direction for the troubleshooting. If this approach works, great; if not, we think about this some more.
If you say that these untouched .avi files are from the Canon Powershot, I am guessing that they probably are MotionJPEG.avi. That MotionJPEG video compression can be a nuisance to deal with at times. Sometimes it appears that the matter is more the availability of this video codec to the project rather than its absence in the system.
Did the Canon Powershot come with a utility that you had installed on the old hard drive? And, did you reinstall that utility after the hard drive replacement? If not, that is a consideration. Some believe use of the camera's utllity is a way around the Premiere Elements MotionJPEG issue when it pops up.
Another approach would be to download and install the tryout Morgan MotionJPEG codec (for now for troubleshooting purposes) so that we can rule that aspect of the issue in or out.
    http://www.afterdawn.com/software/audio_video/codecs/morgan_m-jpeg_codec.cfm
We will be watching for your follow up when you get a chance.
By the way, did you remember to reinstall the 9.0.1 Update for version 9?

  • Trouble Importing MPG and Transcoding AVI

I have read all the posts in this sub-forum but can not find the solution to my problem.
I have edited a movie in PPro. It's about one and a half hour long. When I export it via MPG, non muxed, I can not import the M2V into Encore. The WAV file imports OK. The import dialog box shows up and the progress bar moves to about 80% and then sloooows done to a crawl and finally flashes back to 80% and continues this loop forever, no error message.
So I try exporting from PPro with the AVI (movie) option. This file imports immediately into Encore. I have tried several transcode settings to transcode the file before I try to burn a file or disk. However none of these settings have been successful. The progress bar takes it's time to go to the end, it then disappears but no transcoding takes place no matter how long I let it go befor hitting stop.
The MPG file was exported from PPro with VBR 2 pass 8 mbps PCM audio. I don't have Roxio or Nero. I ran reg1staid several times. My disks are defraged.
My machine is : Pentium 4, 2.8 ghrz, with 2 Gigs memory.
I hope somebody has some insight into this and can help me solve this frustrating problem. If not I guess I will spend the $39 and see what the "expert" at Adobe has to say.

tryptych: I tried AVS. I'm not sure what you were coverting from and to. I used AVS coverter to convert AVI file, produced with Adobe Prem Pro, to MPEG 2. It loaded into Encore alright but Encore wants to transcode it. Apparently Encore considers it non-complying DVD. I don't know if it's the AVS converter or Encore that is FOS. Be that as it may, Encore will not transcode the file anyhow.
By the way, you said that the only way you could get your "files to import at all was as an AVI, and then Encore wants to transcode them again". It is my understanding that AVI files NEED to be transcoded since they are not DVD compliant. However my copy of Encore will not transcode the AVI file even though no error message comes up. Is this not the case with you?
I'm beginning to think I have a faulty copy of Encore. I have been back to using Sonic DVDiT, but when I have the time and energy for combat with Adobe I will contact them.

  • Trouble playing .avi and .mpg files

I'm about ready to throw my Panasonic HDC-TM15 out the window.
I used the camera memory to shoot video files and then uploaded those files onto my work computer, which is an HP. The files came in as .m2ts which would only play in the Panasonic video-editing software. Through this software I was able to convert the files to .mpg.
I decided I wanted to use my new Mac Book Pro to edit the video files so I moved all the files (both .mpg and .m2ts) to an external hard drive and then plugged that into my MacBook. However, the files will not play through quicktime at all. I tried opening some old .avi files and that won't play either.
I'm really fed up and I don't understand why these files (.mpg, .m2ts, .avi) will not play on my macbook. Any suggestions?

Both MTS and MPG files are variations of MPEG; .mts is typically an MPEG-2 Transport Stream while .mpg is typically an MPEG-2 Program Stream (but not always). So you're essentially converting from one MPEG format into another and obviously that doesn't help.
As Jeremy Hansen already suggested, try using MPEG Streamclip (freeware) along with Apple's QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component ($19.99 USD) to convert the original MTS files into a codec that your system can play/work with.
Jeremy is also correct about .avi files. AVI is merely a container; the audio and video streams contained within could have been made from any number of codecs, not all are available for a Mac. You could try downloading Perian ( http://perian.org/ ) to see if the added codecs from that package will let you play and/or convert some of the AVI files.

  • Troubles playing certain AVI files on Intel Mac

I have an Archos 604 WiFi and previously an Archos AV500. On my old PPC machines, the AVI files created by the Archos played just fine in Quicktime. However, I recently upgraded to all Intel-based Macs and I can no longer play the files. Here's the info for one of the files I can't play:
    Type: AVI
    Duration: 47'00"
    Video: [MPG4], Resolution: 640x480
    Bitrate: 1516kb/s, 29FPS
    Audio: [ADPCM], 257kb/s, 32000Hz, Stereo
I have the latest Divx 6 and Flip4Mac codecs installed. The only thing I don't have is 3ivx which doesn't have an Intel version available currently.
When I attempted to play one of these files, the video seems OK, but the audio is nothing but a little static for the first few seconds and then nothing is audible.
I also have the latest MPlayer 2 and VLC and I'm not getting any better results with those players.
Any idea what codec for Quicktime I can try? I haven't tried Perian yet, but it's on my To-Do list for tonight. If there's nothing I can use until 3ivx 5.0 is released, is there an easy Windows application I can run in Parallels to reencode the audio to MP3 or AAC or something else that'll work with Qt/Divx/Flip4Mac?
    Thanks

  • Trouble importing cinepro avi video

Hi.  I have a bit of a newbie question.
I've created some video with the Cinepro codec in .avi form (with Vmix video switching software).  Recording at 1080/60i.
Trying to import it into Premiere Pro CC (Trial) for editing, I'm getting lots of green frames flashing, and it seems impossible to edit this codec.  It works everywhere else I try to play it including the crappy windows movie maker software.
Anyone give me advice how to get my cinepro .avi's to work in Premiere Pro?
(The files are recorded in 10 minute chunks and are about 6 GB's a piece)

I've run MediaInfo (Good program by the way), and this is the information I got:
