.AVI unsupported format

The DV .AVI files I copy from my Sony HVR-DR60 hard drive to my computer will not import into PP CS6. CS6 claims the files are an unsupported format or damaged files. This happens whether I use the media browser or CTRL I. I cannot preview the files in the Source window or see a thumbnail in the media browser.
These files open fine with PP CS4 using the media browser or CTRL I.  I have always dragged and dropped files from the Sony hard drive to my project folder with no issues. In searching for a solution, I tried importing files form the Sony hard drive to my computer using the Sony Recording Unit Utility, but with no difference: PP CS6 still will not use the .AVI files. The files are less than 4GB.
If I knew how to find out, I would share the codec. All I can find is that it is AVI Type 1 when it records to the Sony hard drive.  The Sony manual is not helpful in this way.
My video camera is tape based: a Sony HVR-V1U. This is the only bright light of the whole situation: at least I have back up on tape. Otherwise this is a major problem to my work flow.
I use PP CS6, from the Creative Cloud. This is an upgrade from CS4. Brand new this week.
I use a PC running Windows 7 Professional.
I've seen some similar problems mentioned, but those involved media recorded to CF cards or other tapeless systems.
Also worth mentioning: I do not have control of installations, etc., which may be why I seem a bit clueless. IT is control of such things, though I want to learn.
Please help.
thanks

To check the codec info further you could download media info. http://download.cnet.com/MediaInfo-64-bit/3000-2169_4-75335736.html
Or if you can download KMPlayer (However when downloading this click the "direct link thats below the secure installer because it will use cnet's stupid installer otherwise)
http://download.cnet.com/KMPlayer/3000-13632_4-10659939.html
and then you can open the file with that media player and click "alt+j" and that will show you all the codec information along with color space, frame rate, frame size, encoding profile, pretty much every single thing you would need to know. However according to this list avi type 1 is supposed to be supported by premiere so I don't think that is the issue.
http://www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/products/premiere/cs6/pdfs/compatibiltiy-list-pr emiere-pro-cs6-only-hw-compatibility.pdf
Please get the rest of the codec info so we can see that.

  • "File Import Failure Unsupported format or damaged file" in CS6 but fine in CS5.5

    Hello All.
Recording in Pal DV AVI from Sony Z5U with MRC1K compact flash recorder.
Imported files to computer using the Sony utility, and also tried dragging and dropping.
Some files import to Premiere Pro CS6.03, but others give "File Import Failure: Unsupported format or damaged file,".
The files that do import show up as 4:3 and I have to modify /  interpret footage to get them to show as 16:9,
However, these same files play back just fine in Windows Media Player.
Intriguingly these files import just fine to Premiere Pro CS5.5, and also show up correctly as 16:9.
I can't figure out why some files import into CS6 and others don't....
Anyone else seen this kind of behavior?
(Normally I record in HDV and I've never had problems importing from MRC1K into Premiere, but the client specifically requested DV files for their ease of editing...)
    Cheers
    Mark
PS When I use the DV recoverer utility on these files they import just fine into CS6....

    Hi Jim,
OK, here's the video that imports OK into CS6.03 but that Premiere CS6.03 sees as 4:3:
And here's the one that won't import into CS6.03 but is happily opened by CS5.5 and correctly seen as 16:9:
Can you spot the difference? Thanks for having a look at this.
    Cheers

  • Video unsupported format problem after installing OS 6

I had two videos saved on my Sprint Curve 9330 that played with OS 5.  After installing OS 6, I now get an error message that states, "The video portion of the media being played uses an unsupported format."  The sound from the video plays, but, the video does not.  The videos have an mp4 file extention.  I tried deleting the videos and reloading them from my computer with Blackberry Desktop Manager.  I tried a battery pull.  I checked to make sure no encryption of the media card was turned on.  Nothing seems to fix the problem.  Does any one have some advice or a fix for this issue?  Thanks!

Update:  I got it to work today.  I had to convert the video file from AVI to mpeg4 myself, then download it without "optimizing" it as is.  For whatever reason, when I let BB Desktop Manager try to convert the file, it failed to successfully create a mpeg4 file that could be played on my phone, even though, the file has an mpeg4 file extension.  Hopefully this helps others who might experience a similar problem.

  • Unsupported Format Error

I am getting this error when trying to import an .avi file
into Flash 8 Professional on a Windows 2000 machine:
    quote:
The source file stock_1.avi contains video in an unsupported
    format and cannot be encoded.
On another machine, the same video imports fine in Flash 8
Professional (though it's an XP Pro machine).
I had tried uninstalling Flash 8 and Flash Video Encoder, but
    get the same results.
    Thank you,
    Joshua Cane

I opened Flash Pro 8, created a new Flash document, then
    Imported a Video.
On the XP, I select the .avi file and go through the steps to
encode the video to a .flv file. No trouble.
However, on the Win 2000 machine, I get the above error after
selecting the video and clicking Next.
I also tried just opening Flash Video Encoder and adding the
file to the queue. When I start the queue, I get this error:
    quote:
The instruction at "0x00000008" referenced memory at
"0x00000008". The memory could not be "read".

  • PE4 Unsupported format/damaged file

I get this message 'Unsupported format/damaged file. One of the necessary components may not be installed.'
I use an Hitachi HDD video camera. It came with image mixer 3 software that I use to import the video onto my PC. It saves the files as mpeg 2 and then in PE4 I can import the media into my project to make videos with.
This has always worked and I just made 6 small videos the other day in this manner. Now I just tried doing this today and I get that error message and the mpegs are unrecognized by PE4. I tried it with the mpegs that I used just 3 days ago and I have the same problem.
I have uninstalled and then reinstalled PE4, I used gspot to make sure I have the proper codecs for the mpegs, quicktime is up to date. I'm not sure what else to try.
Anyone have any ideas? I have some clips that I need to get made.
    Thanks

Any solution is a good solution, djeeper.
MPEGs and video from hard disk cameras can be a bit iffy in programs like Premiere Elements. If it works, great! But sometimes they do work and sometimes they don't. (You can increase the odds they will work by downloading and installing the K-Lite Codec Pack -- but even that's no guaranteed solution.)
If you want a solution that works every time all the time, you'll want to convert any MPEGs into DV-AVIs before you bring them into Premiere Elements, per our FAQs at the top of this forum.

  • ERROR MESSAGE - The media being played is of an unsupported format...ERROR MESSAGE - HELP

I recently download an app to watch movies on my phone from blackberrymovemachine.com.  I successfully downloaded this app and when I go to play movies it starts the download and then I get the error message: The media being played is of an unsupported format.  I have gotten this message too when trying to play some videos on you tube.  Any suggestions or help would be great?  Do I need to download another app to support this type of media?

  • Cannot open corrupted .mov file - error 2048 unsupported format

    Hi all,
I have an important corrupted video file and I have tried every way I can think of to open it, but to no avail...
When I open it with Quicktime, an "error 2048 unsupported format" shows up, even though other videos I took are fine.
I can't open this video with ANY softwares including VLC and friends (trust me, I tried LOADS of them)..
After doing MUCH research I understand that either the header/closing part of the file is messed up.
Is anyone able to teach me how to fix those parts?
I'm really at the end of my wits and I'm a just beginner to hex-editing @.@ Better still, if you are able to take a look at this video for me...
I'll be very glad if anyone can help me out with this as I really wish to recover the video, this is for an important friend, thanks in advance!
P.s. the video is about 120mb in size

    Hi
Im using the tool called SUPER.
Its free and you can convert any file format to any other file format
Maybe it would be possible to convert his faulty file to another format and ten you could try to open it again using VLC player or other application.

  • Strange "unsupported format" error with jpegs

I'm trying to help a friend who is running the most recent version of Aperture 3 (all updates installed). When we import a single jpeg from her hard drive, it comes into Aperture with the "unsupported format" icon and an exclamation mark where the preview should be. Double clicking the thumbnail opens the same error in the viewer, so it's not just an issue of the preview. The files themselves are fine and are named with the proper extension.
If we import 2 images at the same time, one comes in okay, and one does not. Importing 3 at a time yeilds 2 good, one bad. So, essentially, there is always just one image that is bad. It will successfully import the very same file that it rejected moments before as long as it is not the only file being imported. Make sense?
This is not a RAM or hard drive space issue. The only thing I think it may be is that she is running 10.6.7 (on a quad core Mac Pro). I'm wondering if the OS update to 10.6.8 resolves this particular issue. I will definitely update it as soon as I can, but I need to know if it could be something else. (I'm not with the machine now, and I need to bring the solution with me because she is not at a location where she can download the update herself.) Has anyone else seen this behavior before?
Thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions. This has me stumped!

Upgrade and then see.  10.6.8 is the current minimum requirement.

It might be kind of late, but i ran into this problem tody as well. To fix it, i went to the memory card screen, clicked the menu button and clicked 'safely remove media card'. I took it out, waited a few seconds, put it back in, and all my videos were working again.
    Hope this helps.

  • Long Capture unsupported format damaged file

Im capturing long videos and from time to time, when i hit the stop button for end the capture proccess, i dont get the window asking for the final filename. The main capture window stays still some time and then it shows itself as ready to capture again as if i putted the filename. The thing is the file is created, but when i try to import it it says damaged or unsupported format. Some other times (the most) this filename window does apperar and when i define the name and hit ok, i can see in Finder that the file that was beeing created generates a thumb, that de "corrupt" file doesnt ever get to generate because i think its not "closed", but i dont understand the inner proccess so its just a guess.
So the thing is, is there a way to fix this file? its 2hr capturing and its not the first time it happens, so id be very grateful if you can help me.
    Thanks in advance

    Capture: Sharp HI8 camera > AVT-8710 > Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle Thunderbolt > Premiere CS6 > JPEG Compression

Did you ever find a solution to this?  I'm having the same issue and really need to try and repair my files.  I captured 2 files each over 200 GB in HD 720p, jpg, mov file using an ultrastudio mini recorder via thunderbolt on a mac.  The capture went perfect until the end.  On one the box to name the file never appeared.  On the other I named the file.  But both cannot be opened by Adobe Premiere, Qucktime, VLC, or any other program I've tried.  The shorter test clips I did beforehand worked fine.  Any thoughts?  Did you get this figured out?

  • Unsupported format or damaged files message?

On importing files into CS5 I get the "Unsupported format or damaged files" message. I assume I need the correct Codec?  I am on a PC windows 8.1. Anyone know how to solve this?

    Hi,
You haven't mentioned the file type. Are you importing through the media browser?
Rename the parent folder that contains the files or try to move the files to a different location and see if that helps.
    Thanks,
