AVI Video 'studdering' when played over local wireless network

Here's the setup...
.AVI movie resides on an external USB drive connected to a white Intel iMac which connects wirelessly to Linksys hub (WRT54G). I then try watching the video on an IBM Thinkpad with Windows Media Player v12. The Thinkpad connects wirelessly to the Linksys hub.
When playing the video, every 7 min or so, it will start to studder for lack of a better way of describing it. I thought it was the anti-virus software on the Thinkpad, which I uninstalled and it didn't really help.
There are no other machines connect to the linksys hub.
This is a bit obscure, but it's driving me nuts!!! Any suggestions?

Hi Stephen,
You could try your Energy Saver preferences pane on the iMac. If it is set put hard discs to sleep when possible, it may be getting in the way if your iMac is not doing anything else.

  • Use ipads over local wireless network to view a webpage hosted on a mac book pro?

My only experience of Apple products is my much loved iphone 4.
I am an event  photographer currently using windows laptops  at events. My staff download my images to a powerful host laptop, select those for use and build a webpage stored in a shared folder on the host laptop. This laptop is hard wired to a wireless router, and 3 or 4 further laptops ( much lower spec as web browsing is all that is required)  connect to the network and access the webpage allowing potenital customers to view the images on site at the event. It all works very well. After the event  an online web gallery with ecart is created and added to my website.
There are a couple of problems with my 5 yr old host laptop - battery is dead and now the screen backlight has died- so I need a new one, and am for the first time I am considering a Mac. Probably a top spec  mac book pro 15 inch for portability - the current one is 17 inch with a power supply the size of  a house brick (and heavier an than a brick!)  and I am trying to reduce the weight and physical volume of kit I am carrying to events.
Can I replicate my windows set up using ipads and a macbook pro?  Is so, would  first generation ipads (which  I could pick up second hand on a well known auction site perhaps?) suffice or would it need to second gen?
Thanks for your time people, if anyone can help it would be great!

I'm not getting a clear picture at all of what problems you're seeing. If you are seeing online accounts have their passwords changed, those accounts are being hacked. Someone may already have access to some account and is using that access to reset passwords on other accounts. Change the password on EVERY online account you have. Be sure to use a strong password, and don't use the same password on more than one site.
If you are seeing changes to your bookmarks and browser history, your Apple ID may be one of the accounts that has been hacked. After changing the password on your Apple ID, you need to lock it down with two-factor authentication:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5570
Beyond that, we will need additional details about what specific symptoms you're seeing in order to help further. One thing I can say, though, is that these problems are very unlikely to be due to any kind of malware. See my Mac Malware Guide to learn more on that topic.

  • 720P 30 H.264 videos stutter when played back on Windows

720P 30 H.264 videos stutter when played back on Windows
I have an interesting problem that I am hoping someone can help me with.
I have several short videos (2-4 minutes) in 1080i HDV that I have edited in FCP. When output to 720P 30 H.264 in Compressor at either 10 or 6 MB they look just drop dead gorgeous when played back on either of my dual processor Macs.
However when played back on a Windows machine with QuickTime 7, they stutter to the point that playback locks up. This happens on 1.5 GHz to 3.2 GHz P4 class machines with 512 MB to 1 GB of RAM and 64 to 128 MB video cards. On the 3.2 GHz P4, the processor utilization peaks at 100%. The interesting thing is that all of these same Windows machines have no problem playing back 720p 24 trailers at 6 MB.
    Thanks all.

First a correction. I am using the latest version of FCP – 5.
Regarding the encoding, I have tried going from native HDV MPEG-2 to H.264 at 720P from 10 to 4 MB at 24, 30 and 29.97. The Mac seems to play everything back very well, but most PCs (the latest IBM T 40 – 43 series laptops) a couple of Dell desk tops (2.6 GHZ with 64 and 128 MB graphic cards) and a 3.2 GHz Shuttle PC with a 128 MB graphic card (that we routinely use to decode four MPEG-4, 4CIF images simultaneously and display on a 42” ED Plasma) choke/stutter to varying degrees with processor utilization hitting 100%.
So, the real issue here is what is the difference between a 720p trailer that I can download from Apple and what I can output using Compressor 2 at a similar data rate – other than the frame rate?
And why does the Compressor output stutter on most PCs?

  • Sending Video over the wireless network

I am considering capturing images from a IEEE 1394 camera and sending it over the Wireless network to another computer.  The reason we want to do that is to make the
camera device light and portable by connecting it to a portable tablet computer.
What kind of protocol is the best way to transfer the image. The TCP or UDP in labview convert data into string before the transmission which are very inefficient. I just want to streaming the raw image data, maybe with some protocol overhead.  Did National Instrument has any package to do that or any other software packages available?
There might be another solution is to use the Ethernet cameras instead of 1394 cameras.
Would it be possible for the Labview application on a remote desktop computer to acquire the Ethernet camera over a WiFi wireless connnetction in between ?
    Thanks
    Cindy

    Hello Cindy,
If you want to transfer data across a
network, TCP would be the most efficient method (wireless is typically not as
successful as Ethernet due to the overhead).  There is actually a very useful knowledgebase
document that discusses the various methods used to transfer image data across
a network.  If you go to our main site http://www.ni.com and search using the keywords “Images
Over Network”, the first link is entitled Streaming
IMAQ Images Over a Network (or Internet) which gives brief descriptions if
you choose to use TCP/IP, Datasocket, LabVIEW web server, or ActiveX.  Another very informative document results in
that same search and is titled Transfer Images Over the Network
    which actually gives examples
illustrating different ways to send images.  I hope this helps.  Please let us know if you would like further
clarification or assistance regarding this issue.Vu D

  • Can I use airport express to create a local wireless network that my apple tv can connect to for AirPlay/mirroring in student halls/dorm without Internet connection

    Hi I was wondering :
Would I be able to make a local wireless network using airport express that my apple tv can connect to which in turn is connected to a projector with hdmi in so that I can mirror/AirPlay from iPhone pad and mac

will the Airport Express allow you to log onto a hotel wireless network, and broadcast a secure wireless network in your room for your wireless devices, like the Ipad, Iphone, etc.?
The bottom line with a single AirPort Express is no.
The AirPort Express can only "extend" a wireless network when the network is being provided by another Apple router.
As you might imagine, it is extremely unlikely that that the hotel network....which no doubt uses professional wireless access points provided by a manufacturer of commercial systems.....would be compatible with an AirPort Express.
In many years of travel domestically and internationally, I cannot recall a time when a single AirPort Express would "extend" the signal provided by a hotel's wireless network.
However, if you had two AirPort Express devices handy, you might be able to configure one to "join" the hotel network and provide an Ethernet signal to the second AirPort Express, which would be configured to "create" your own "private"  wireless network.

  • Check Point VPN and local wireless network

I need to use Check Point VPN to access a client's remote network. Now I cannot access my wireless printer or AirPort base station, even when I have disconnected and shutdown the Check Point client. I have removed the Check Point startup items from LaunchAgents and LaunchDaemons in order to restart without Check Point loading at start up.
When I start in Safe Boot I can access the printer, but not with a normal start up. How can I find the other startup items that are interfering with my local wireless network?
    Am running Mountain Lion.

    Thanks for the reply.
I found an installer in the Library as suggested.
The installer did not install successfully.
I trashed the installer, repaired permissions, downloaded the software again and was able to install successfully.
I will not be able to test the connection until I am off the network but I am better off.

  • Apple tv and a local wireless network

i'm trying to set up my apple tv and my macbook pro, but i have no internet connection where i'm at currently. i assumed you could simply set up a local wireless network, so i hooked up my netgear router and my macbook recognizes and well...the apple tv kinda freak out when the wireless router is on. it doesn't always respond to the remote. when it does find the wireless signal, it frequently resets itself and then stalls out again....when i turn the router off, the apple tv functions normally....with no content from my macbook though of course......
    any thoughts?

atv2 does connect when wired directly, but behaves the same way, stalls out, freezes, resets, etc.
is there a better router to go with when trying to set up a local wireless network with no internet?
I use the Apple Airport Extreme. I love it, but many others like D-Link, Netgear..... I would look for an N router if your Netgear isn't. What is your Netgear hooked up to? That might be the problem. I also think that you might want to hook up the ATV2 wired and then restore it, and reenter all of the user and setup info afterward. It may not be the Netgear at all. If you restore the ATV2 and it still does it, then you can look at the Netgear and what it's hooked up to. No sense spending money if what you have works well. If you don't have Internet (I just noticed that statement above), I think you'll have issues with the ATV2. It has to have a way of connecting and phoning home to Apple, etc.

  • Can Wired Printers Print Over A Wireless Network Through USB Connection to the Router

I have been told by supposed experts that I can use older wired printers wirelessly through USB connections on a router and I have been told by other supposed experts  that it does not work.  This is what I have and what I am trying to do:
In my new home I have limited space and I dedicated an unneeded closet to office and computer stuff.  I rebuilt the closet with shelves and drawers and I added power outlets and phone and coax jacks.  I use a wireless HP Pavilion laptop (about a year old) running Vista anywhere in the house.  The computer closet has an HP C309 wireless printer, an HP D4260 wired printer, and an Epson Photo R280 printer.  I can't get cable or FIOS right now, so I am running the internet on DSL at 3.0MB.  That signal goes into a router supplied by Verizon and I jump it over to a Netgear RangeMax Wireless-N Gigabit Router with USB.
There is no particular reason to have the Netgear router in the lineup except that that two networking "experts" (their term -- I have no frame of reference to judge them) said I could connect the HP D4260 and the Epson printer via USB cables to the Netgear router and then send documents to them over the wireless network.  When I have these two older printers connected to the Netgear router, the network does "see" them and shows them as network printers.  However, no documents ever arrive at them.
As an author, I print thousands of pages a year in draft mode for review and I would prefer to use the HP D4260 as it is far cheaper to operate and it prints far faster and quieter than the HP C309.  Connecting it directly to the laptop is not convenient as it is nowhere near where I use the laptop.
Is there anyway to get at least the HP D4260, and preferably also the Epson R280, to print wirelessly via the network by connecting them to the USB port on the Netgear router?  If not, I will have to buy a cheap, fast wireless printer, something I really don't want to do.
    Thanks.

You did not give the model number of your Netgear, but I am sure that some Netgear routers with USB support USB hard drives and printers, where some models only support USB hard drives.
Either provide your model number or look at your documentation to see if your router actually supports printing.
Also, since you essentially have two routers in your home, make sure that ALL devices (printers and computers) are connected to the Netgear router, not to your DSL router.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • How to work on iMac files from a new Macbook over home wireless network

    Hi,
A quick question for anyone who can help. Most of the time I work on my iMac G5. But I've now also got a MacBook, and I want to be able to use that as much as possible (ie not having to be at my desk upstairs at all times).
What I need help with is file sharing. I know that I need to put files into the iMac's public folder for them to be accessible on the MacBook over my wireless network. What I'm not sure, and want to check before doing anything drastic in case I cause unintended problems, is whether there are limits of any sort on what can/should be put in the public folder.
For example, can I just drag my whole Documents folder (or my Work folder within it, about 0.5GB worth) into the Public folder? Would that then mean that I can access all my Work files from either machine?
Apologies if this is a non-query - if it is as simple as just dragging as much or as little as I want into the Public folder. I had just assumed that I'd be able to mark files/folders that I wanted to be visible/sharable over the network - and am a bit wary about shifting the locations on my iMac of huge numbers of my files.
A final follow-on query. I'd ilke to use the DVD burner on the MacBook to back-up my iTunes library (which, again, is on my iMac). Would this again be a matter of relocating the library (even temporarily) in the Public Folder so that the MacBook can see it and back it up?
Any responses would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance....

On the iMac - Turn on Personal File Sharing
On the MacBook - In the Finder, click on "Go", then "Connect to Server...", then type in the address of the iMac (you can find this at the bottom of the "Personal File Sharing" window on the iMac).
Click on "Connect" and enter your account name and password for the iMac.
You should get a list of available items to access, at a minimum your home directory (you don't have to use the Public shared folder). If you use Admin credentials, you can mount the hard drive and access the programs you have on the iMac and run them from the MacBook - not all programs will work this way but most of the ones I use work.

  • How to view channels used by other local wireless networks?

I use a wireless airport network in my office, with my Airport Express (802.11g) base station about 10 feet from my iMac. I get a lot of interference (from other networks or cordless phones) and despite interference robustness being on, my airport signal gets dropped fairly often -- and with it, I lose my Internet access and wireless printer.
There are about 15 other local wireless networks (owned by other businesses). I thought I might improve my interference robustness by switching my wireless channel to a channel used by the least number of other networks.
Now, I seem to remember running into an (Apple) app somewhere that showed these local wireless networks with their channels. But now I can't find it again, so I can't tell which channel is least used. I hope someone can help me find that app or functionality again!
    Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion; I checked it out and found some questionable reviews on VersionTracker for iStumbler so I'm hesitant to jump right in (does it still fill up the Console log?)
In any case, I seem to remember finding channel information using some other application or preferences pane or something already on my system, but now I can't remember where. Is there any app that comes with OS X that shows channels on local wireless networks? I can't find this feature in Airport Utility.
    Thanks for any assistance.

  • Video Freezes When Playing Locally

    Hello,
I just purchased a used 2012 Mac Mini i7 2.3GHz which has been upgraded to 16GB of RAM and has a 1TB HD and 500GB SSD, functioning as a fusion drive, and is running the most recent OS (10.10.2) with updates. While playing a video on the Fusion drive (desktop), I am experiencing random freezing where the computer is not usable and the mouse becomes the spinning wheel. The freezes last about 20-30 seconds and then the video resumes once the freeze ends. When I play videos from my connected external HD (connected via Thunderbolt or USB) I get no freezing at all, which makes me rule out the video card or processor.
    Is my fusion drive failing?
Was there possibly a cord that was damaged when the SSD installed?
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I paid top dollar for the Mac Mini and was very excited to get it. I am not worried that I may have purchased a system that has problems.
    Thank you in advance!

Open Activity monitor and set it for CP and then memory. Have it showing when yo are playing the video. When it freezes look at the CPU and Memory usase and see if something is using up those.
Also not the exact time of a freeze and that when OK open the Console app in Finder>Applications>utilities and look for log entries at the time. Post suspicious one here.

  • Youtube videos do not play over wifi in iOS 5.1

I am running a wireless network off an Airport Express (running the latest firmware) and after 5.1 my iPhone 4 as well as brand new iPad cannot play youtube videos. I just get an "unknown error" window popup. This is true for the YouTube app, as well as the mobile and desktop site in safari. However if I use 3G on my phone, or wireless hotspot and share the connection with my iPad, youtube works just fine. There's nothing crazy about my network and my phone never had any issues showing youtube videos till 5.1.
    HELP??

Actually, after two days of it not working and while I was on the phone waiting to talk to someone at AppleCare,, it started working. I have no idea why, the only thing that might changes I turned Bluetooth off on my iPad. However it started working on my iPhone again and Bluetooth is always on on that device. Either it was something really strange with the Wi-Fi sessions, or something got changed about how iOS devices access iPad that day.
Try cycling Bluetooth. It's my only guess.
