AVI vs DV file format

I got great assitance last time, so I'll try another question.
What is the difference between capturing DV footage to a PC which would be an AVI file, and capturing to a Mac in FCP which would be a QT file.
Is there any compression, or are these completely uncompressed files? And, if there is compression, how much of a difference?
Also, if I export out as a DV stream or AVI how much difference between these two formats?
I've tried to googling, but the language in the information I am finding is starting to get a little confusing, and I am not sure I am finding the right information.
Thanks!

sorry, but i don't understand why the video needs to go through the Windows Media Encoder? shouldn't a university be hosting their streaming video in something standard like MPEG-4?
there would be a distinct advantage to using Compressor to encode directly from the FCP timeline to a streaming MPEG-4 preset. FCP tells Compressor where all of your edits are and creates keyframes at the edits so there is no pixelation across edits. Windows Media Encoder won't have this advantage.
you should probably do an MPEG-4 encoding and compare the subjective "quality" with the output of the Windows Media Encoder, given the fact that they're all starting with original DV sources. my bets would be on the fact that the tight coupling of FCP/Compressor would win in most cases. i've seen a lot of WMV on the web and the quality is really poor, quite frankly.
there's all that and the fact that more people on more different platforms would be able to watch it!

  • HT3775 will my mac play .avi file formats?

    Hi
I have a new mac and not sure on opening this format. The help section lists AVI and the file format is .avi bit it wont open.
    Any ideas?

In addition to the VLC player that mende1 mentions, you can use a tool like Handbrake to transcode such formats to an MP4 that will play in quicktime. These can be found here:

  • All video file formats won't run on my machine.

This includes mov, avi, mp3, mp4 file formats. I tested using the following software: Quicktime 7 Pro, x, all browsers, iTunes, and mpeg streamclip. Quicktime gives me the following error, "The movie could not be opened. The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error -50.)". I can't locate the associated error listing to suggest where to look next.
I can only get wmv files to run in windows media player. I deleted quicktime preferences from my library, and rebooted my system, to no avail. Any other suggestions?

    Cmasillon:
Thank you for the good advice on the Update Combo.  I've been running Snow Leopard since it was relatively new.  As of recently, I had been unable to open any .mov files with my Quicktime 7 Pro and was getting the "OSStatus error -50" error message whenever I tried to do so.  I don't know when and why that problem/conflict arose, but I had downloaded and installed Microsoft Office 2011 for mac about a month ago and this was the first time that I'd seen that error message.  Can't really blame it on MS, but if it walks like a duck...
Given that fact, I tried to use my Quicktime 10 to trim those videos.  They opened and played in QT 10, but after I'd trimmed them and tried to Save them - whoops, the "OSStatus error -50" message again.  It wouldn't let me save my chages.  (QT 10 would first tell me that I couldn't save under that filename, prompting me to try to change the name, to no avail.
Previously, the only problem I'd experienced was that my Quicktime 7 Pro would crash if I clicked to open a media file in the Finder without first having opened QT 7 Pro.  My make-do solution for that was simply to keep in mind that I needed to open the ap first.   When I had previously tried to download and re-install QT 7, the machine wouldn't let me do it, saying that QT 7 was already installed.  - Frustration galore -
Anyway, I was recently able to download and install Quicktime 7 version 7.6.6, which is acceptable to Snow Leopard.  I also saw your post about having resolved your problem by downloading Combo Update 10.6.7 for OSX Snow Leopard and immediately clicked on "Software Update" the combo update included 10.6.8 update for Snow Leopard, so I downloaded and installed.  Boom! my problems are all gone.  Quicktime 7 Pro and Quicktime 10 both work as they should, and I don't even have to pre-open 7 anymore, so I can simply double click on QT 7 files in the finder.
Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.

  • HT3775 Hi, my mac which is on 10.7.5 osx. but when ever i insert any mpeg/avi video cd it shows the file format not recognized. i am fed up of this. plz somebody help me. what should i do now.

    hi,
i am using 10.7.5 lion there are a lot of problems in this OS.
like most of the programs quit's unexpectedly. some programs does not work on it. like adobe cs5 is not working. everytime time when i do click on adobe cs 5 icon it shows a message "To open “Adobe Photoshop CS5,” you need to install a Java SE 6 runtime, but you are not connected to the Internet. To install a Java SE 6 runtime later, open “Adobe Photoshop CS5” again" while i always remain connected on the net.
    2. when ever i insert an avi or mpeg video disk it shows the file format not recognized. to **** with this macbook pro n its 10.7.5 lion. the same disk works/runs on windows on windows systems.
plz somebody help me what should i do now.
    [email protected]

it sounds like a fualty installation of Lion, this may happen from time to time.
The best thing to do in this situation is to reinstall Lion. You will not loose anything doing this, but you should always keep back ups of your information.
    http://www.apple.com/osx/recovery/
    basically hold Cmd+R on boot..
first go to disk utility, verify and repair your disks and permissions. Exit out of Disk utility and then go directly to "reinstall Lion"
choose that and let it reinstall.
Adobe CS6 does need Java to run.
To play your movies you might need to get an application called VLC. VLC is a free app and will play most videos and music files you throw into it.

you have a 64bit intel mac, so get the one for that.

  • Is microsoft avi the highest quality format to export an avi file in premiere pro cs4?

    Hello,
I exported an avi file in premiere pro cs4 in media encoder using Microsoft avi format but the quality turned out poor on dvd, what's the highest quality format I can use?
    Please help
    Thanks
    Elio

    Elio,
As has been stated, DV-AVI is not the format FOR a DVD-Video. However, it can be used (and often is) as a transport medium into a DVD authoring program, like Encore.
Can you please outline your workflow from PrPro to the final DVD, and is it a DVD-Video (will contain MPEG-2 material in VOB "containers"), or a DVD-Data, that is then played on a computer with something like Windows Media Player, VLC, MediaPlayer Classic HC, etc.?
Good luck, and please let us know exactly what you are doing, and the programs used.

  • .AVI file format question

Upgrading from CS2 to Photoshop CS5
I found out after the fact that in order to edit video you need CS5 Extended.
So, I then went and returned regular and upgraded to Photoshop CS5 extended.
(See my other thread for details, but installing the 12.01 patch is not an option at this time.)
Try to use file open to open a .AVI file from one of my cameras and get a message of "unrecognized file format".
Was able to import the 7 second video into layers.
Checked support issues, and installed Quicktime 7.6.8
Also, due to 12.01 issues, reinstalled Photoshop CS5 Extended AFTER upgraded Quicktime to 7.6.8
Machine specs:  Toshiba Satellite P30  Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.60 GHZ (Hyperthreading Dual Core) 2GB RAM ATI Mobility Radeon X600 Win XP Professional SP3 About 12 GB disk space available at install time.
Note that Quicktime will open the .AVI file in question with no problems, as well as Roxio software (trying to get rid of that with CS5)

I talked to support via phone and it appears the the problem is in installation.  The install of CS5 extended did not take over the regular install.  So, I need to start by completely uninstalling AGAIN and installed extended from scratch AGAIN.
I did try the program mention GSPOT as well.  It says AVI codecs are installed on the machine inquestion.  I will get more informaiton tonight afte rI do the re-install and see what happens.

  • Quicktime 10 .avi file format

I can view the .avi movie, but have no sound... any suggestions on what to do to listen?

any suggestions on what to do to listen?
The normal solution when a file loads but does not play either the audio or video portion of the content is to determine what codec is not being supported, locate a Mac component version of that component, and install it on you system. In the case of AVI files, the Perian (free) component package will play most "common" audio/video format combinations currently in use on Windows platforms. However, be advised that this file format is old (i.e., the developer dropped official support for it a decade ago) and there are several codecs that have never been transcoded for use on the Mac or may only be available for OS 9 and/or non-Intel systems. In addition, if you already have Perian installed and then upgraded to Snow Leopard, it may be necessary to re-install the package to properly re-link the components for QT X.

    Ken Selvidge ([email protected])

I am not a computer savy person.  I just need to plug in and have the machine do what it should do.
Not a problem, but that indicates you have a lot to learn.
File extensions like mpeg, mp4., avi, wmv, etc. are just wrappers. It is like a box the audio or video content is placed inside. The audio and video content must be encoded with a codec before it is placed in the box. There are thousands of codecs. Not all are installed on your Mac. You must have the same codec installed that encoded the video in order to play it. So, while Quicktime does support mpeg wrapper, it may not have the codecs to decode the internal video.
Some programs have lots of the codecs available to them, like VLC, Niceplayer, MPlayerX, etc.
You can also get "plug-ins" for Quicktime that add codecs to Quicktime, like Perian. Although it is no longer being developed, Perian still works well.
Why is it so difficult? Probably because they are always working on ways to compress the video to get better playback.

  • How do i convert my imovie trailer for the iphone 4 to other file formats?

I'm due to make a comical presentation in 2 days, and i downloaded iMovie for the iphone 4, and would like to use the trailers created as part of the presentation.
I'm on windows xp, and have sent the file to itunes, gone into the file sharing part, added it, saved it, and even synched the flipping thing and yet it wont even play in itunes??? thats driving me mad as it is??
Not really bothered about that....My real main concern is wanting to play the movie file in an AVI/MOV/MP4 etc format, and have even downloaded various video conversion packages to try an convert and playback my results, but once again, and a few hours wasted, I find myself facing another brick wall.
Is it even possible to playback the imovie trailers created in a more generic video format for others to see??
    I really do hope so!!!!
If not, then apple, i want my £2.99 (about $5.50) back, coz that would be as pointless as a paper ashtray.
I hope ive not had my pants pulled down and wasted my money an time on this.
Please someone help me, or put me out of my misery.

Actually, scrap that one girls. Ive figured it out. For those who have a similar prob, just make sure you have quicktime installed. plug ur iphone into ur pc as normal, and choose the camera an scanner options that appears auto on ur window. select the trailer u wish after the usual wizard talk through and then "ok" or "apply" or whatever the button is called. select your destination folder, and walaa. its all done, and converted into .MOV format.
NOTE:  When saving ur trailer on ur phone, and it asks what file size, chose the Medium one, or it takes ages to open.....unless ur comp is super fast, and not like my craptop.

  • Is there a way to play flv & mkv file formats through media element in windows 8.1 app ?

i am trying to develop a video player so i just thought Is there a way to play flv & mkv file formats through media element in windows 8.1 app ? , coz when i tried media element it is supporting only mp4 & avi formats.

Here is a list of Media Foundation codecs
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/dd757927(v=vs.85).aspx
For the rest of the formats you have you write your own MFT-based codec and ship the codec with your app. See also
    implementing a Codec MFT (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/dd757274(v=vs.85).aspx)
    Media extensions sample (https://code.msdn.microsoft.com/windowsapps/Media-extensions-sample-7b466096)
MKV and FLV are just container formats, though, you need to survey some video files to see what video codecs are actually in streams and support them one by one. Supporting some proprietary video formats may involve licensing costs from patent holders.

  • Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 classroom in a book lesson files "file format not supported" error message

Hey y'all. I have the creative Suite cloud membership and am learning Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 and have the latest update. I have an iMac, version 10.8.2 and have been going through the lessons 1-8 so far from the 'Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 Classroom in a book' with no problems. So far so good. Then, when I opened Lesson 9 project today, I realized that certain media was off line (see pic below-videos and maps) even though I had been able to open the project. I tried to see if it was a link issue but was unable to select the 'Link Media' option and the system did not give me the option to link media when opening a new project. The strange thing is that I am now able to open some lessons with everything working fine but when I try to open other lessons such as lesson 9 or 10 or 11 I notice media files offline after getting the "file format not supported" pop-up error message when attempting to open a project. It's random as some lessons I had opened previously now give this error message of file format not supported when they didn't in the past whilst others work. I have deleted all the lesson files from my hard drive and reinstalled them from the cd onto my hardrive but the issue persists. Any idea as to why all of a sudden Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 is giving the error message "File format not supported"??? when opening the lessons. I have not changed any preferences. I've included some screenshots though I don't know how much help they will be... Is anyone else running into this issue??? Can anyone help???
NEVERMIND. I FOUND OUT ON MY OWN WHAT THE ISSUE WAS AND IS NOW FIXED. YAY!

Why were you trying to link a file in the project to the project file itself? Shouldn't it be a video file or something? Like .mov .wav .avi .mp4 and not .prproj

  • Mp3 wont'play on 6111 - file format not supported

    hi
i've just uploaded an mp3 file in the gallery of my 6111 phone.
i wanted to use it as ringtone, but when i try to open it, it complains "file format not supported".
the manual says my phone can play mp3 and aac, so what kind of mp3 will it play? i searched through the manual and the internet but i found nothing.
the file i've uploaded is an "ordinary" mp3, size 4,3 MB, bit-rate 192 kbps, stereo, 44,100 kHz and tag Id3 v2.4
maybe the problem could be the bit-rate?or id3 tag?
    anyone knows more about it?
    thanks everyone

    Hi
I recommend formatting the USB memory stick and other devices connected to the TV using the option provided in the TV settings.
Usually such recorded files can be played only on the TV.
Also take a look to user manual page 70.
    http://www.mytoshiba.com.au/file/product/manual/5187/55VL900A.pdf
There is a list of supported file formats.
According to the Toshiba User manual following formats are supported:
    Avi, mpeg-2 PS, MPEG-2TS, MPEG-2 VOB, mov, mp4, asf

  • Verity and New File Formats

I've searched the help files, KB, and forums and don't see an
answer to this question: Are there ever updates to the Verity
search functionality in ColdFusion to accomodate new file formats,
such as the newer versions of Word, PDF v7.0 and 8.0, etc? While
the search functionality of CF is great, it's somewhat limiting if
it can't be updated to index the latest file formats.
So does anyone know if it's possible to update Verity
(without waiting for major version upgrades in CF)?

You are asking an excellent question, Jos!
Converting all of the videos to DV-AVIs before combining them in the same project is an excellent idea. Because you are using a Mac, however, you should use the DV-MOV as your common video format. To do this you should use Share/Computer/MOV using the PAL-DV preset. (There are many types of MOVs. A DV-MOV is a specific type of MOV that is used when shooting and editing video on a computer.)

  • Rendering file formats problem (non-issue in premier)

    hello all,
so i'm new to final cut and baffled at the unusual render issues i've encountered from the get go.
i recorded some video using the canon fs-10 / fs-20, a lowend digital camcorder.
the camera outputs the format to .mod which i then converted to .mpeg4.
without any editing in FC, a single clip needs to render just to view it in the canvas but plays ok in the viewer. does this make any sense?
i've even tried to convert to .mov and .avi.
when i used a different camera that automatically records in .mov, final cut plays back in the canvas just fine without rendering.
    so,
    1. what exactly determines when FC renders if not the file format?
    2. why does it need to render at all if i'm just playing back? it plays back in the viewer but not the canvas. baffling.
would be a real shame if FC couldn't handle simple editing with these basic files.
    thanks!

Just grabbing software, and throwing video files at it, without taking the time to read or learn HOW this said application works, isn't wise. FCP isn't Premiere...FCP doesn't just take in any old QT file and then work with it. No. It needs to be converted to a format that FCP works with. What you see in the EASY SETUP list is what FCP works with.
If you don't bother to learn the basics of the application, then things won't go smoothly. If you just want to grab QT files and throw them into an application to start editing, then use Premiere.
    1. what exactly determines when FC renders if not the file format?
If it isn't in the Easy Setup list...FCP will want to render it. If you mix two or more codecs in a sequence, then FCP will render the footage that differs from the main footage you are editing with.
    2. why does it need to render at all if i'm just playing back?
Because It is viewable in the Viewer...that's just a window to the QT file. But the canvas is where things are put together. And that is where settings are determined.
would be a real shame if FC couldn't handle simple editing with these basic files.
Basic files that aren't in editable codecs. At least ones that FCP (and Avid) work with. If you want an app that just works with stuff you throw at it, Premiere and Vegas are for you.
