AVI vs MPEG-2?

Hi everyone,
Can anyone tell me which Container/Format(AVI or MPEG-2) gives better video and sound quality after it's converted (encoded) to watch on a regular standalone DVD player?
Rio.

AVI is a container format, and can contain any number of compression formats (mpeg, DivX, DV, etc). You can make an AVI file with mpeg2 compression should you choose.
However, the extension used for mpeg2 files when authoring a DVD is .m2v (audio should be separate AIFF or AAC file), and you should stick with that. It should also be noted that AVI is primarily a Windows format, and that OS X tends to use Quicktime for all its video needs.
As far as quality is concerned, that depends entirely on your compression settings for mpeg2.

  • Covert VHS tape to avi or mpeg or wmv

I need to convert VHS tapes into files, not a DVD!
What is the way to turn the captured VHS footage on the PE7 timeline into an avi or mpeg or wmv and have it not fuzzy and the file small enough for one DVD?
My customer wants to edit the files using another software so can't use the DVD files I normally produce by just burning the DVD.
They said they need the files to be one of these:
    .asf
    .avi
    .dib
    .fpx
    .mov
    .mp2
    .mp3
    .mpeg
    .mpg
    .pct
    .pcx
    ,.png
    .ras
    .stv
    .tga
    .wav
    .wma
    .wmv
the avi was GIGANTIC I tied, the wmv was grainy

For editing, you may not have both small size and high quality
DV AVI Type 2 with 16bit 48khz sound is the best there is for conversion from VHS for editing
Anything else is HIGHLY compress and designed for playback only, not for editing
Tell your customer to provide you with a hard drive to store and ship the files

  • Could someone please recommend the best program to convert AVI and MPEG files for use (and exporting) into IMovie 11?

Hi - I understand I need to convert AVI and MPEG files for use within IMovie 11. I have one particular file that has a watermark stating "Created with Flip4Mac WMV Demo". Can someone please recommend the best program for a novice?  Thanks!

    Hi Susan,
It is no simpler converting vobs to mp4 than mpg (mpeg2).
There is *always* a loss of quality converting video from one lossy-compressed format to another, e.g. mpeg2 to mp4.
So, if you want to not lose any quality, then converting vobs to mpeg2 (mpg) is the thing to do (since there will be no video/audio re-compression), assuming Lr5 will accept them (sorry, but I do not know). example commands:
    Mac: ffmpeg -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mpg
    Win: ffmbc -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mpg
If Lr5 won't accept them, then you can convert to mp4 with minimal quality loss using a command like:
    Mac: ffmpeg -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mp4
    Win: ffmbc -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mp4
You may need variations of these commands depending on encoding of vob.
Note: -i means -input-file; -sameq means -same-quality, as much as possible.
ffm... is smart enough to avoid re-encoding, if possible, when -sameq is used, and makes reasonable choices for audio/video codecs based on extension of output file.
Of course, you'll need to download/install ffm... program if not already on your machine, and execute commands in a terminal or command window.
Do keep us posted please .
    Cheers,
    Rob

  • Convert quicktime to avi or mpeg 2

I have made a short movie with FCE. The client wants it on disc in either AVI or MPEG 1 or 2. Have tried exporting to quicktime and then saving as AVI, but it saves as .mov What am I doing wrong?
    Any help much appreciated

Hi again, I have now managed to change it from .mov to .avi by simply going to the hard drive, selecting it and changing the extension.
I have one other problem though, my file is 15 seconds long - 28.3 MB and so quality is not brilliant. The client will allow the file to get up to 600MB. How can I increase the size, and therefore quality of my video?
Do I have to go back to FCE?
    Thanks in advance

QuickTime supports many different file types & codecs, but not all.   In many cases you can lookup, download & install specific codecs if you need them.

    just drops .
what do i do wrong ?

    thanks

I suspect your mpeg-4 bitrates are too high.
Files need to conform to the following specs:
    ===========================================================
    Video formats supported
    * H.264 and protected H.264 (from iTunes Store): Up to 5 Mbps, Progressive Main Profile (CAVLC) with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution: 1280 by 720 pixels at 24 fps, 960 by 540 pixels at 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats
    * iTunes Store purchased video: 320 by 240 pixels or 640 by 480 pixels
    * MPEG-4: Up to 3 Mbps, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution: 720 by 432 pixels at 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats
    Audio formats supported
    * AAC (16 to 320 Kbps); protected AAC (from iTunes Store); MP3 (16 to 320 Kbps); MP3 VBR; Apple Lossless; AIFF; WAV
    ===========================================================
You may be able to right or ctrl click on the problem file in iTunes and choose Convert to AppleTV format - trouble is it will re-encode the 'incompatible file' again and probably further reduce quality.
What are you currently using to convert the AVIs?

  • Recommended Video Conversion program (AVI to MPEG-4) and Settings?

I'm looking for a good AVI to MPEG-4 video converter and wondering what settings I should be using when converting? I notice that some programs have a dummified "best quality" setting but not all of them.
Also, is MPEG-4 the best quality format to use? I saw a format called h264 which seemed like it might be higher quality?

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
Unfortunately AVI is a container type and not a video codec, so we can't really guarantee that any particular software will work for you. You might want to give mpegstreamclip a try, or better still tell us which codecs are used in your files. See This to learn how to find this information.
Mpeg 4 is the only format that you can use, although h264, otherwise known as AVC or mpeg 4 part 10, is also a form of mpeg 4. You will be much better off using h264.

  • AVI to MPEG-2 converter

Does anybody know of a good AVI to MPEG-2 converter for Linux?  I need to convert an AVI to MPEG-2 so that I can burn it as a DVD video.

Absolutely correct, of course, but if you want to make it just a little easier, try tovid, or the anytovcd.sh script that comes with mjpegtools,  which, despite its name, defaults to DVD-friendly format. If you go for for anytovcd, you'll need bfr and y4mscaler from the AUR.

  • Distortion/Crackling during Macromedia, avi, or mpeg playb

    Hello,
I have an SB Audigy 2 ZS. A few months ago, I began to notice a very loud distortion/crackling noise during playback of Macromedia flash, avi, or mpeg files. The distortion is present when using speakers or headphones, and only accompanies sound in the files (ie a silent period in the mpeg has no distortion/crackling). Mp3 and aac files work fine, as does audio from cds and dvds. The problem began around the same time that I struggled to install correct drivers for my new TV tuner card, so the TV tuner drivers may have caused the problem.
Since then, I have removed the TV tuner from my system and uninstalled all associtated drivers. I have also tried reinstalling the Audigy drivers numerous times, including a "cleansweep" reinstall. The distortion is present even during a clean boot of windows.
    Here's my system:

The next step will be a hard dri've format and windows reinstall, but I'd really like to avoid this. Can anyone give me some suggestions please?

SB0358 - Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS - DELL (OEM).
Maybe you need to install Dell bundled drivers for your card to get 00% compatibility 'back'.
    Also, maybe
    - updating/reinstalling directx, audio/video codecs, etc. common components
    - switching into another device driver mode (DS/MME/WDM/ASIO)
    - checking the audio HW acceleration and SRC quality settings (needs to be set MAX for best possible quality)
    - disabling devices/controllers not needed like Modem, onboard audio/game/MIDI, etc. (from BIOS)
    - trying some other settings w/ SATA controller
    hel

  • Convert avi to mpeg

I would like to convert films from.AVI to MPEG. Is there a good easy program?

Yes! They are few of them. I use handbrake ( http://handbrake.fr/ ). Its free program with built in presets for apple products, subtitles support and good online comunity if help needed.  Other programs I know pople use are EM Total Video Converter and AVS Video Converter, but they are payd software. Some people use itunes/quicktimes for making ipod versions of avi movies but hanbrake works best for me.

  • .avi to .mpeg

How do I get my quicktime to read a avi file? I tried doing some of the thigns I saw on here and nothing worked...

How do I get my quicktime to read a avi file?
The normal procedure is to determine the specific audio and video codecs used to create the particular AVI file you which to play and then install the appropriate QT components if they are available. If that is to much trouble, try installing the Perian QT component. It contains a number of popular codecs which may or may not provide a quick solution to your problem. BTW: if you are trying to convert your AVI to MPEG as your topic title suggests, QT cannot do that. If all you want to do is view the AVI file, you can alternatively try viewing it in the VLC media player.

  • JMStudio won't play .avi files - mpeg-2 works fine

Why doesn't JMStudio play .avi files?
A small application that I created with JMF 2.1.1 has the same trouble.
My .avi files can be played successfully with mediaplayer and also zoom player but JMStudio chokes on them. Why?
I want to create a two-pane player for side-by-side video comparison with JMF but I don't want to start the effort if simple .avi playback is not possible.
Sun's JMF 'supported format' page shows that all forms of .avi are at least 'playable' - yet my files are not.
I have several mpeg-2 files that are playable in JMStudio and also in my simple app - so I know that the code is working.
There are several old threads on this forum that ask this question but none of the threads give a decent answer.
    Please help.
    Thanx,
    skigrinder

    Got it working.
Apparently, JMF can't handle type-1 .avi files but it can handle type-2 .avi files.
Nero and Sony-DvGate both create type-1 .avi files in the capture process from a DV camcorder.
    I found a (Windows) utility - DvConverter - that will convert a type-1 .avi file to type-2.
I'm now able to play these type-2 .avi files in JMFStudio and also in my own prototype player.
Surprisingly, the FramePositioningControl functions also work - skip() and seek() !!!
I'm currently working on eliminating the 'comb-teeth' effect that exists in both JMFStudio and my own player.
I've read that this effect is the result of interlacing artifacts but my experience has shown that it also has a lot to do with the codec that's running. In windows, installing, un-installing, and re-installing codecs has a tendancy to mess with the registry in unpleasant ways resulting in a lot of time wasted trying to get rid of this 'comb-tooth' effect.
Andrew, do you know of a foolproof way to solve this problem on windows?
    Thanx,
    skigrinder

  • No sound in avi files (MPEG Layer 3 format)

Ok. here's another take on this problem maybe someone can please help me with. overall objective is to convert avi files to "ipod ready" files using quicktime. at first when any of these files were opened in quicktime, i had no sound and a white screen while the file was "playing". it took me a very long time but finally found the necessary video codec so i now have the video.
however, i am still not getting anywhere with the sound problem. when i go to video properties in quicktime it says the audio track of the files are in MPEG Layer 3 format. so, naturally i began searching for this audio codec. when i found one on freecodecs from Fraunhofer, downloaded, and installed, nothing changed. unfortunately i cannot find any other version of this codec and cannot figure out how to get quicktime to use the codec from Fraunhofer.
    Please help!!!!

Hey. Thanks for the info. I have found the program and will give it a shot. In the meantime I have been using a program I found called Digital Media Converter which seems to be working great (a little slow but does the job). However, I was wondering if one of you who is most familiar with the Windows OS could answer a question. I have encountered an error when I tried converting video files in the past and with this new program. It seems to be internal to Windows. After a file is converted to an mp4 and I go to the conversion folder to look at the file...whenever I click on that mp4 file or go to use it the Windows Explorer crashes giving one of those report sender windows that Windows generates after a problem. Now what is really strange is that despite Explorer crashing, I can move that box out of the way, continue to work with the file (place it in iTunes), delete the original (as iTunes stores its own copy), reset the Explorer, and then it's like nothing ever happened.
Is it normal for the Explorer to crash under these circumstances? And, is there anything I can do to fix that?
I'll be trying the MPEG Streamclip program in the meantime. I have located it on the web but not installed just yet. I'll get back to you. Thanks for all the help guys!
