Avi won't play in mountain lion

hi, community!
I'm having trouble playing avi files.  downloaded latest flip4mac for OS 10.8.2 and still no .avi.   It loads the movie, shows the correct time, looks like it's playing it, but the screen is black.  To get that I have to open it from WITHIN flip4mac.  If I try and open it by double clicking I get an erroro message about not having the right codec.
Any help greatly appreciated.
thanks,

is it with any avi file?
If just this one, it might be that some exotic codec is used that you do not have...
Try MPlayerX from app store, it is free and I have no problems of playing various video files on it.
Personaly me, I do not like VLC, it does not look like it belongs to Mac... as well it has less features.

  • HT1338 Quicktime Player no longer plays under Mountain Lion

Quicktime Player no longer plays under Mountain Lion.  It loads, I can see the video but it does not move when clicked on to advance. It does move page by page mannually with the arrow buttons but does not play when clicked on the video advance button.

    Is this a known problem?
Yes, if you mean that the MOV file may contain data that is not supported by the QT X AV Foundation, Modernizer, and Convert 64-bit QT X structures embedded in the Mavericks and Yosemite operating systems but still supported by the 32-bit QT 7 structure still included in these operating systems and/or supported by the "open" codec configuration accessible by QT 7.
Has the format of mov files been changed?
I don't believe the file container format has changed but security updates and/or Mavericks/Yosemite codec support limitations may fail to recognize or support a particular file container/data compression format combination. Since you have not provided any information regarding the data actually contained in the MOV file, it is impossible to be more specific here. However, in most cases it is possible to use any of the available FFmpegX based transcoding utilities to manually convert unsupported data to file/compression combinations that are compatible with both QT X and QT 7 based apps under any current Mac OS X systems.

  • My Word, Excel, and powerpoint won't work with mountain lion

My Word, Excel, and powerpoint won't work with mountain lion.
Just upgraded, and my icons are question marks.

Is the upgrade free? That depends, if you have a more recent version of Word, Excel and Powerpoint, then probably yes, but if not, nope, it'll cost you. Try M$ (micro$oft for that). However, might I suggest, humbly, that you try OpenOffice or NeoOffice. I used it to open up a powerpoint presentation and it did fine, plus the price is right

  • I need help getting minecraft demo to play on Mountain Lion.

I have tried many many times to get the demo for minecraft to play on my computer and keep getting the same error report. I switched over to windows and it worked just fine there so I'm pretty sure the problem is Mountain Lion and not the whole computer. I've been looking all over the place for a solution and keep seeing that I need to go to system preferences and security and privacy and go tell it to open stuff from anywhere, and I've tried that, three times, and it still won't work. So now I'm going to post the crash report here and see if anyone can give me a different solution because that one, which seems to work for absolutely everyone else, does diddly-squat for me. Thank you in advance if you can help me fix this.

I believe you will have to "convert" the movie to H264 or something like that. A free program such as HandBrake will do this job. Or you can let iTunes convert it for you. However, you should be warned that iTunes takes a LONG time to convert a movie. A fast convert will probably take all night and then some. I would go with HandBrake

  • Sony EX1 .mp4 files will not play in Mountain Lion

I have .mp4 files from a Sony Ex1 camera.  They are in the correct file structure in the BPAV folder.  They will open and play in Quicktime 7 but not Quicktime 10.2. (Black screen, no audio.)  They will not preview (black screen, no audio)   They will play in the Sony viewer.  Of course they will not import into a NLE.
This is what Quicktime 10.2 inspector says:
    MPEG-4, 1,920 x 1,080
Linear PCM, 16 bit big-endian signed integer, 2 channels, 48000 Hz
All the files worked fine till I "upgraded" to Mountain Lion
I can play .mp4 files I compressed myself.

Perian was installed when my Mac Pro was running OS 10.6 Snow Leopard; but I removed it after installing OS 10.8 Mountain Lion since Perian is not compatible with the new OS.
    >> Are you sure the audio in those files isn't AC-3? Perian won't play AC-3 in Mountain Lion. <<
VLC will play the AAC audio files. It reports the following as their codec:  MPEG AAC Audio (mp4a) 48 kHz
Incidentally, I get the same results (no audio) when attempting to play the QuickTime audio files on a MacBook Air that is also running 10.8 Mountain Lion. When I boot into 10.6 Snow Leopard on the same computer, the files do play properly in QuickTime Player.

  • Macbook Pro won't start after Mountain Lion download.

Downloaded Mountain Lion for my 2007-08 Macbook Pro. Internet was painfully slow (60kb/sec, usually 15 mgb/sec). After not using it a week while vacationing, I started it up, and it was working fine until it randomly shut down and brought up an error screen (hence the reason it shut down) and asked if I wanted to boot normally. I powered it down; now it won't start at all. Power button doesn't work, demounting the battery for a minute and remounting doesn't work, nothing works. I have a genius bar appointment soon, but am wondering if anyone has some advice.

Close problem - I believe the problem is RAM is storing your last data, and not releasing it, so you cannot boot it. Trying removing RAM fully, then starting.

  • Unerased .avi won't play

I moved some AVI video clips to the trash and then emptied the trash. Then I realized I needed the clips. I used Norton Utilities 8.0 to "Unerase" the clips back onto my hard drive succesfully. Now quicktime won't play the clips and just gives the message "Error opening the movie" "The movie could not be opened."
I tried using several different players including VLC and they still won't open.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,

  • MS Office 2011 won't install under Mountain Lion

Today I upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion. However, my MS Office 2011 refused to run, didn't even start so I couldn't check for updates manually. I had it set to check for updates automatically by the way.
So I uninstalled MS Office and then reinstalled from the installation disk. But my iMac won't install it; it starts up the installation most of the times (although it sometimes spits out the disk without even trying) but after several tries it keeps telling me that the installation failed because there is no software to install.
    So frustrating!
How can I install it anyway? I really need it since all my documents are MS Office.

    G@dgetgirl wrote:
Thanks Eric, but I'd already found that procedure and this is exactly what I did. Didn't work, alas. Or rather, it worked alright since I've got no traces of MS OFfice on my Mac anymore. But it still won't install from the installation disk. Below is the error message, in Dutch. It says the installation failed due to an error in the installation program and that I should contact Microsoft.
    Pfff.
Everything worked fine under Lion. Should I give up on Mountain Lion and revert back to Lion?
    What did Microsoft say?

  • ITunes doesn't play after Mountain Lion upgrade

I just upgraded from Snow Leopard, installed Mountain Lion, 10.7.3, and with it the recommended iTunes upgrade 10.6.1. It seems to have broken things.
If I click to play a song I can get the play window, but it'll be frozen at 0:00. Starting, stopping, dragging the cursor: nothing will make the time advance or music play. This happens with samples of music, purchased songs, video samples. The Console isn't showing any error messages.
I've logged out, and back in. I've shut down completely and rebooted. I've check that stuff still plays OK on my iPad.
What next? This is pretty disappointing.

I'd be interested to know if you resolved your issue. I have the same one, and have had an open case number on it for 6 weeks with no resolution from Apple Care support staff including fairly senior ones.  Any song or podcast synced to an iPod Classic w/ OS 10.7.4 via iTunes 10.6.1 will not play normally--it starts and stops randomly and skips to other tracks, even when locked in the off position.  The laptop is 9 weeks old, the classic is 3 weeks old, and the same happens w/ an iPad 1 and iPod Touch. All devices and the laptop work normally in all other respects. If I download a song or podcast directly via wifi on the Touch it works somewhat better, although there are problems there too perhaps related to the glitchy Voice Control software.  I am doing this while temporarily residing in Berlin but I don't think its local wifi protocols since everything plays normally directly on the laptop.  I have been using Apple products on a daily basis for 20 years and have never had this kind of a ridiculous problem, not even with crap OSs like 8.1 and 8.5 . . .  Apple Care hasn't cut it at on on this one

  • Macbook Pro won't boot after Mountain lion upgrade

I bought the Mountian Lion upgrade and it installed fine on my MacBook Pro, and the machine worked fine yesterday.  I performed a normal shutdown, and today it won't boot up.  The Apple logo and the spinning pinwheel is all I get.  Is there a known issue?

  • Adobe flash player 2014 won't install on Mountain Lion

Suddenly last week flash player stopped working on my MacBook Pro - Mountain Lion.  I tried downloading the new version but it kept timing out and ending with an error message.  Even when I unlocked my my security settings to allow downloads from anywhere.  I was able to download some version of Adobe Flashplayer via an alternate site - softpedia, but only some videos  will work with that and with others I continue to get the alert to upgrade.  I tried calling Apple, but of course they wanted me to pay to have them help me solve what is essentially THEIR problem as I see it.  Only as a last resort.
    C.

I've have this problem come and go, and come back again.
FIX: The best fix so far for me is to go back to Flash Version 13. The say Flash Player Version 13 is in "extended release". I am on Mac osx 10.7.5 the last version of mac operating system for my machine.
Find it here: for browsers, it may have the strange name "plug in content debugger", I think the word "plug in" matters for browsers. The other "projector" versions I don't know about. The "plug in debugger version 13" fixed my safari problems.
    https://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html
Fix 2: You must disregard the constant signaling to update to version 15 if you are getting it. The update to version 15 may load a broken version in the browser, then you have to uninstall it with their special utility and reinstall version 13. Get the uninstall download here (or search for adobe flash uninstall on the web):
    http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-mac-os.html#main_u ninstall
More Possible Explanation: Apparently the weird name "debugger" means they have debugged common problems with it. Essentially you are going back to the previous version since the new one has problems loading/working (keeps getting identified as out-of-date so it won't work) but they don't want to pull the new version off the market, can you imagine that mess. Thanks Adobe for the extended release we depend on it!
Here is adobe's comment on it:
EXTENDED SUPPORT RELEASE - FLASH PLAYER
What is the extended support release?
Adobe makes available a version of Flash Player called the "Extended Support Release" (ESR) to organizations that prefer Flash Player stability over new functionality. We have created a branch of the Flash Player code that we keep up to date with all of the latest security updates, but none of the new features or bug fixes available in our current release branch. This allows organizations to certify and stay secure on Flash Player with minimal effort.
10/14/2014 - Updated debugger and standalone versions of Flash Player. These players contain fixes for critical vulnerabilities identified in Security Bulletin APSB14-22. The latest version is 13.0.0.250 (Win and Mac). All users are encouraged to update to these latest versions.

  • Cannot install Mountain Lion - my iPhoto won't quit and Mountain Lion won't let me do a force quit

I'm trying to upgrade to Mountain Lion but when it ries to quit all programmes to install my iPhoto won't quit as albums are being sync'd.  I try to stop and quit but it won't.  I then try to force a quit and Mountain Lion won't let it.  help!

if you don't mind interrupting the album sync, you can do a hard shutdown of the mac by pressing and holding the power button down for 10 seconds to make sure it's all the way off.
you can then do SMC reset which is described in the following article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
after doing this turn on the mac, click on the black apple then force quit and make sure all apps are closed
open app store and try again to install the mountain lion
