.avi won't view in PSE 8

I am running PSE 8 on a windows 7 home premium machine and the .avi files recorded off my point and shoot digital cameras will not view in PSE 8, but work perfectly in the windows picture viewer when I double click on them in the windows folder. to be clear - they thumbnail appears fine and when I double click on the thumbnail from within PSE 8, the video view launches and when I hit play the time bar scrolls and the audio works, but the video is just a black screen.
Thoughts? any help is appreciated

How can i export with best quality AVI for PC viewing. HAS to be AVI. I use the expert settings with keyframe of 10 and 100 kb/sec max, and it is very "blocky".. How to improve the quality.

basically, use "expert settings" "movie to AVI" "options" "settings" "cinepak" "millions of colors" "high" "30 fps" "key frame every 300 frames" "limit data to 400kbytes/sec"
following the above instruction, i was able to export a movie to a decent size avi file that plays on wmp on a pc. (i didn't use sound cuz i didn't have any but there is instruction for sound on the pdf file)
i use a mac but have to create videos that can be viewed on any computer and can be used on a powerpoint presentation. i was so happy when i found a way to make good quality (actually i used "best" rather than "high" under quality), not choppy video for pc and mac viewing.

Full screen view in PSE 10 crashes under both W7 32 and W7 64

I am testing PSE 10 (I have PSE 6) and have installed PSE 10 under both WIndows 7 64 bit and WIndows 7 32 bit. Both installations are fully updated. The hardware is the same for all three of my regular XP (PSE 6) and these PSE 10 installs. The catalogs and images are on a separate large drive (one directory set for PSE 10, one directory set for PSE 6).
I have found that PSE 10 crashes after a period of time when showing images in full screen mode (the slide show mode). It is hard to say how long it will take, but somwhere around after diplaying 100-200 images PSE 10 crashes. Worst case was after about the fourth (it might even have been the second). Sound is 'none', captions are disabled, update rate is 2 seconds.
I have put PSE 6 on the W7 32 bit install and it runs perfectly. (I am only using the PSE 10 organizer, I haven't tried the editor in any dpeth as yet). PSE 6 ran for hours in slide show mode with not a hitch.
I have rebuilt and optimized the catalog (but the PSE 10 Organizer will run without trouble for hours if I am not in full screen slide show mode), so I don't think the catalog is damaged.
I have switched off all those background features (from the preferences). I have run in XP compatibility mode.
This is a fresh W7 install and has no problems reported in it (AV etc). There are no disk errors for example. The PC has 8GB RAM (~3.6 available under W7 32 bit). There is a lot of free space on both the C: drive and the data drive (100s of GB).
The Microsoft support for the crash is 'no support available' from the event viewer (or the W7 system health report accessed from the control panel).
Google search on the crash shows no useful light either, basically the Organizer just crashes.
Neither Adobe's search or a Google search on the forum seem to find a suitable similar experience.
All images are jpegs and are roughly the same size, very approximatly 4MB each.
Any other suggestions I can try?

I’ve found a work-round.
This is embarrassing (for Adobe), as the work-round is to set the CPU affinity to single cpu mode. With that PSE 10 has been running in slide show mode for 3 hours now. Looking good!
On a temporary basis, from the task manager, show the ‘processes’ tab, right click on the PhotoshopElementsOrganizer.exe *32 process, choose ‘Set Affinity …’ unselect ‘All’ and select (check) any one CPU. (Under W7 32 bit I guess you won’t get the *32)
For a more permanent fix, using the start command with the affinity option is needed. This is not compatible with the PSE 10 launcher though, if you use the launcher you will need to set the affinity as shown above.
To use the start command, from a command prompt type start /? for the syntax..
Try a google search of “how to set the processor affinity” for further advice.
Now, should Adobe be reading this thread I have some advice for them:
“It is NOT POSSIBLE to conduct a reliability test of a program using a virtualized environment”.
I made the error of assuming that after the PSE 6 fiasco in a multi-cpu environment Adobe would not make the same mistake again. Well, they have. Perhaps this time they will conduct a root cause analysis of what they are doing wrong with their test plans and FIX IT, because I object to doing their testing for them, again.

Full-screen view in PSE 12?

When I am editing a photograph in PSE 12, I would like to be able to expand the photo I'm working on periodically while I'm working on it, such that I can see, full screen, what the actual results of my manipulations in the picture will be. I can't find any way to [easily] get Photoshop Elements 12 to go to a full-screen view (and then to go right back into the working, image-adjusting views to continue with the various processings). Any way to do this right within PSE 12, without leaving PSE to look at the emerging image in another program??

I'm using Windows 7 (on PC), so I *can* do the procedure you described (and have tried it just now)...
I do like this "floating window" setting, for several reasons, and think it will be quite useful, so I thank you very much for your reply!
But... While doing this does indeed eliminate the outside-the-image clutter and therefore makes the image-in-progress somewhat easier to assess, it doesn't really do anything to make the image fill the entire monitor screen (as I can easily do with most other photo viewers). I'm getting the feeling that an entire-screen image isn't doable in PSE 12 at all (why the heck wouldn't they put that in??), so probably doing the floating-window-maximized thing is about as close as I'm going to get to what I really want to do. Better than nothing, I suppose, but I really don't understand why they (Adobe) would leave out such an obviously useful/important option.

Why am I getting sharper printouts from Windows Photo Viewer than PSE 7? This was not always the case. has something in my settings changed? I have tried all obvious solutions but no change. How can i get the best image print outs from PSE?

I prefer to print from PSE as this allows me to set picture dimensions. Windows photo viewer does not give this flexibility. I am using the same PC, the same printer and the same print file, yet the outcome from each software option is significantly different. WPV is sharp and bright whereas PSE is softer. Can any one help me?

My Photos won't open with PSE 12!!

I cannot get my photos to open!! I select a photo from the viewer and from PSE itself, NOTHING!! It had worked before, but suddenly...nothing. I uninstalled and reinstalled...nothing!

What do you do? Start by providing detailed information
what version of iPhoto>|? Of the OS? what ahs recently changed? why do you think this might have happened? where is your iPhoto library located? Do you have a good, current backup (you should is yoru phoots have any value to you)

Unerased .avi won't play

I moved some AVI video clips to the trash and then emptied the trash. Then I realized I needed the clips. I used Norton Utilities 8.0 to "Unerase" the clips back onto my hard drive succesfully. Now quicktime won't play the clips and just gives the message "Error opening the movie" "The movie could not be opened."
I tried using several different players including VLC and they still won't open.
Any suggestions?

Converting RAW files to view in PSE 6

I recently purchsed an Olympus pen PL-1 and I am unable to view the RAW (.ORF) files in PSE v6 - any ideas?

I think the latest version of the camera raw plugin for pse 6 is 5.6,
which does not support your camera.
To be able to open your raw files in pse 6, you could try the DNG 6.1
converter.

How can I view/edit pse files in CS5?

When I try to view files created in Elements 7, I get the PSE file logo, but it will not open or display the picture. What is wrong?

What kinds of files? Are they .psd files?
And you're using File - Open from Photoshop to view them?
What operating system are you running? There's a known issue with 64 bit OSs that .psd files don't show thumbnails nor work with the Windows Previewer.

DV7-1232nr LT smartcard reader sees but won't view/copy files despite admin/login; MS SW.

Despite being logged as admin, even sharing drive/folder, taking ownership, command prompt xcopy & in Vista Hm Prem, nothing will view or copy files to my PC! I've wasted 6 hours trying today, & the driver download is same as driver on LT, so that's no help--I had hoped to find an updated driver to fix this! The card is a Sandisk Micro-SD 2GB with adapter, fits & reads fine, but "access denied" for every attempt! I even changed ownership on each file, but it didn't change the access denied problem. I rebooted, tried diagnostic startup (in case of conflicts), tried shutting user acct. control off, etc. Since it's NOT sdhc (2gb & < qualifies), why won't the reader allow access to my files??? Do I need to use a different card reader through USB??? Then what good is the card reader installed?
BTW, 2 files that weren't in the image folder were able to be copied, but not viewed, after changing ownership. However, none of the others could be copied to the image folder on SD card, never mind onto PC. My LT is <2yrs old, am having all sorts of problems, not happy with HP so-called support after 1 yr, no help on expensive purchase like this? The Windows upgrade expired after 1 yr too, plus I bought this in 2010, yet its full of 2008 devices & SW?! (Brand new special ordered through Staples locally). What's with the Office 60-day TRIAL, can't uninstall that without windows/boot probs & sound issues. I have free full Open Source Office installed instead & had to keep the other MS crap (Office & Works) to keep LT working!!!
I got so tired of this LT always needing fixing I shut it down for 6 mo.'s, come back & still spend more time fixing it than using it--and I'm an IT professional 20+ yrs. Linux &/or MAC sounding better everyday!

Thumbnails from turtoials won't view in tree

Every time that I try to go to the next lesson in the tutorials for Shake , I go to load the script for the tutorials or the images, I will not get the thumbnail image. I get the tree and the noodles, but no image. Yet , if I load one of my own images or movies from, say the desktop, they will come fine. I copied the software tutorial disk to my hard drive and no luck on the tutorials.Help!

I have noticed that Shake likes to put the computer name in front of the image file name e.g. My Wonderful Computer/Users/User/Desktop/image.tif. The consequence of this is that if a project is created on another machine, you won't be able to view the FileIns, so I always delete the computer name at the beginning, press Enter and Shake will automatically fill in the name of my machine.
I don't think it is a problem with your Shake installation. Also note that sometimes the nodes will stay red even once they are reconnected even though everything is correct. This is a bug, but it doesn't happen very often.

Final Cut 3.5 Eport to .avi won't play on PC

I have recently purchased a Mac and am new to Final Cut Express being a PC user for many years. I have made a movie in FInal Cut Express and want to put it on my PC running After Effects to touch it up.
However, when I export the avi file it wont play on my PC??
I have hundreds of video codecs and have never been unable to play avi before. Additionally I have also tried the uncompressed export function using quicktime file type but that won't load on my PC either??
If some could help that would be great!!

I'm having the same problem. We are trying to export some short videos to play on a Tricaster Pro (XP based that reads AVI files) and all we get is a blank screen.
In my frustration I told my team, "There's no way Final Cut could not export an AVI file that couldn't be played on a PC (turning the triple negative into a positive, "Mac must be able to export an AVI file that plays on an XP."). I would completely lose faith in humanity if Mac failed me on this.

.flv and .avi won't play any more.

I had all the relevant codecs and was able to play .flv files in QuickTime and in VLC Player and also .avi files.
I reformatted my MacBook Pro for unrelated reasons, and now since installing all the same codecs etc. I can't play .flv files and also I have .avi movies which play with no sound in QuickTime, whereas they used to before reformatting.
I have installed:

XviD Codec 1.0
VLC Player 0.8.6i Janus (Intel)
Perian 1.1
Does anyone know why suddenly there is no sounds for .avi in QuickTime and .flv won't play at all in QuickTime, VLC or the DivX Media Player whenever it used to work fine? I don't want to have to install more media players.

despite what you say, Toronto..., I had the same codecs installed as described by Somhairie and it worked fine before I reinstalled all OSX.

Wmv and avi Won't play on new iMac

I used to be able to play wmv and avi on my old G4. I can't play either now. Technically an avi file will open and play on Real Player, but as it "plays" is has neither images nor sound. wmv won't play at all. When I try to open them in Quicktime I get a message that they're not movie files. I downloaded and installed applications called DivX and 3ivx, which apparently are supposed to play wmv or allow Quicktime to play them, but so far they don't.
When I try to drag a wmv file to the DivX converter, I get an error message with that says "The movie could not be converted. It contains no recognizable movie. (-2048). This happens with both new wmv files I download on my iMac, and old ones I transferred from my G4.d
When I drag an avi file to DivX, it says it has converted it, but then it "plays" the way it did on Real Player, with neither image nor sound.
Well it just "converted" an old wmv from 2001, and now it's "playing" without image or sound!
Well I THOUGHT I'd downloaded 3ivx, but it installs a 3ivx folder in my Applications file that doesn't contain the 3ivx application so far as I can tell. The two applications are Get 3ivx! and Uninstall 3ivx.
Can anyone help me out here?

Ok, with the AVI files that say "The movie could not be opened. The file is not a movie file." I can't do do that. With the file that gives me sound but not image, it says that the format is Indeo 3 (Perian). One that plays but has neither sound nor image says the same thing. Another that plays with neither sound nor image says IV31. Does that mean anything to you? Thanks.
I don't actually know what a codec is either.
