Avid editor straches head...subclips again

This is maybe a logging q/workflow q/
...Let me start by saying, as an AVID fan and editor of nearly a decade, FCP5 HD is amazing in so many ways. Pick up in the UK is hopfully improving with the BBC and others investing.
I used FCP last year on a HD 50 min US Discovery Channel doc and I had a love/hate relationship. Certain aspects of the app were just so good (timeline editing, composting, etc). Some however were woeful. I am not going to try and compare Avid with FCP but I must admit to maybe having a legacy workflow that doesn't always translate. I am sure that as FCP works its way into the pro end of the market there will be many other Avid editors scratching their heads. Now I'm on another (my 2nd) FCP project and I'm concerned...
One of the issues that KILLS me is subclips, and PLEASE DON"T SAY THAT YOU SHOULD CAPTURE YOUR CLIPS LOGGED ALREADY. We don't capture our clips, assistants load the tape and we view when its all in , maybe a week later if there's 25 tapes, whatever.
There's no way that they're gonna pay your edit rate to sit in a suite with a director and view tapes, spool, capture, etc. if there's hours of footage. And a director who's worked on Avid for years isn't going to give exact clip info to the digitiser, it'll be like, 'go in there and out 25 mins later')
So now thats out the way, let's see if you can help me out.
Say we have a 30 min clip with GVs, IVs, and CA.
Normally I subclip each q/a in the IV, each GV and each CA, etc.
Then I may stick them in multiple bins, or not. Depends on the project. Some time later I come back , and edit them into a sequence and the director says, there's a great shot a few minutes up tape of that shot on the timeline. So I want to reference the original clip. I matchframe (f) the timeline clip, the viewer loads the subclip. Then I reveal master clip (SHIFT f), an option that is sometimes greyed out for various confusing reasons. That shows me the subclip in the assigned bin. But how do i track back to the the original clip without using the Find command?
In Avid its Matchframe twice and you've loaded the original clip. It always relates back. Not so in FCP.
Lets say also that I want to trim a subclip beyond its in or out, I have to remove subclip limits. Next time I load that subclip, its the entire clip. so the subclip is redundant, its just a renamed version of the original clip. Is there another way to trim the subclip beyond its limits WITHOUT blowing the subclip i/o points? Same applies to adding a dissolve, etc, or anything that needs to reference media beyond the original subclip i/o points.
I think I posted about this before and I had replies suggesting that I had to be more careful choosing i/o points for subclips. Well, i thought this was non linear, random access, non destructive editing. I can do this basic editing technique in Avid versions going back as long as I can remember, why not on FCP 5? Or does FCP really need me to modify my workflow?

This must be Euro-Avid-speak. My fault. I have never used Avid and never learned anything besides high school Spanish, so translation is necessary.

Then you may need to face the unfortunate prospect that you simply will not be able to use FCP in your work. Or you adapt; FCP will never work like your old Avid.
I do have one—possibly helpful—suggestion (besides asking that you purchase the "FCP for ex-Avid users" books that are on the market). Comparing FCP to Avid gets you two things around here: Views from other Avid users (a decidedly small minority around here) and active avoidance. You might get some help from a larger body of the forum's participants by asking about subclips instead of telling us why they blow. We know that part, subclips in FCP are poorly implemented. That's why I try to never use them.

  • AVID editor needs help

    Hi,
    New to FCP and just trying to work my way around, but struggling to find a couple of things I'm used to.
    Firstly, in AVID I have a 'lock all' shortcut mapped to the keyboard which allows me to lock tracks in the timeline, clips in bins, effects, subclips and most especially sequences so that they can't easily be deleted. I know in FCP I can lock tracks, but I can't find how to lock anything else. I'm sure it's right there in front of me, but you know how it is...
    Also, what is FCP's equivalent of 'sync lock' in the timeline ?

    Avids are different from fcp but you'll make the transition just fine. I did.
    Don't think you can lock sequences, but why not duplicate your sequence (which I do at least once a day) and lock all the tracks on the duplicate if you're worried about it. My workflow is to duplicate my sequence each day when I start working. I don't ever(unless I've had a few beers at lunch) make changes to the duplicates. Just so you have an idea of how I work, I name my first sequence, Asembly 1. the next day, I highlight the sequence in the bin and hit option-d which creates a sequence called assembly 1copy. I then rename assembly 1, assembly 2 and start working on it.
    FCP by default locks synch in the timeline. It will not allow you to throw things out of synch without warning you unless you lock a track. It took me a while to get used to it, but after a while, it's not a problem.
    It seem to remember that there is a book for avid editors making the transition to fcp. Someone will hopefully pipe up with the name. Or you might google the subject.
    Good luck and post back with any specific questions. This is a great resource and you'll find a lot of help with a minimum of attitude (although some may disagree on this). There are many experienced fcp editors here who started out on Avids.

  • Export a QT file to give to an AVID editor. What codec?

    I have searched the forums but have really not found the answer I am looking for. I have an XDCAM HD sequence and want to export a file to upload to my FTP site so an AVID editor can use it. What should I export it as? A friend of mine said I could download an AVID codec and export it using that. I have no idea how to download the proper codec from AVID if that is the workflow I should use. Any help will be appreciated.

    Go to AVID.COM and download the Avid LE codecs. Then convert your XDCAM export (that any machine without FCP will NOT be able to see) to Avid DNxHD 145.

    hello, please excuse my ignorance, but i have a pretty basic question.
    im am interested in purchasing a mac pro, and i have heard that there are no "universal" versions of certain programs, ie photoshop, after effects, and avid. my question is if i were to buy a mac pro would i be able to use my old versions of photoshop, illustartor, after effects, final cut pro 4, final cut studio and avid? if yes i believe i would not fully utilize the power of the mac pro, right?

    i guess more spacifically what im asking is, do i need 2 video cards, one for each operating system? a freind of mine had told me that avid only runs with an nvidia grafik card, is that true? i had hoped to buy the radeon card...and i am assuming that i need multiple hard drives, one for each system, is that true. what is this stripe business, should i do that, what is it actually, could i upgrade to it later when i can afford it more comfortably? and how much hard drive space should i have to be safe?
    the truth is im a rookie freelance editor that is just getting into the game so to speak and i could use some good advice. iv either done small dv projects on my fcp 4 from my aptartment or worked in a professional editors suit where it was loaded with all the goodies so im not too familiar with certian things. i have recently become more work and need to "professionalize" my system by step out of the middle ages of dv and into hd and so on...
    sorry to unload all this on you, but i live in berlin and getting straight forward answers to technical questions isnt easy in german, its either over my head as far as the language or im uncertain if people try to sell me too much...
    on a side note, i learned editing on FCP, and i have always preferred it to the avid. but during the last couple years here in germany i had to learn avid and i have slowly begun to appreciate it, but still feel i will always try to edit with FCP when i can get away with it...

  • Elements eleven editor won't install again. Help

    After accidentally deleting my elements eleven editor it won't reinstall again.  Despite me having the disc, serial number and the fact organiser is still working.
    My mac pro says it 'installation encountered errors'.  But it only says that right after the whole installation process and serial number input.  So far I have tried reinstalling it multiple times, verifying the disc with disc utility and there seems to be no problem there.  But it won't work anymore.  So frustrating this is, I have wasted my weekend trying to resolve this, can anyone help?

    The issue is, unfortunately, more likely with your Mac than with the program (assuming that the disc itself isn't damaged). Have you tried just downloading the program from Adobe's site (assuming it's version 13)?
    Otherwise, you may want to open your Mac's Disk Utility and run some diagnostics on your system to ensure something on your Mac is not failing.

  • Help for Avid Editor: Cutting In defaults to Canvas

    When I cut into a timeline from the Preview window, FCP automatically jumps to the Canvas(Record) window, so that I have to hit Q to switch back to Preview window to keep watching dailies.
    Is there an option to leave the focus/control in the Preview window? (what Avid does).
    It is only 1 extra keystroke, but it's one keystroke I have to hit thousands of times a day.
    It could be easily solved with a check box in the preferences somewhere. (Feature request if it isn't already there)

    Don't know how much this helps, but by default the "Q" key toggles between the canvas and the viewer. That may be a quicker way than clicking.

  • ISO BOOK "FCP for AVID editors (3rd ed)" by Diana Weynand!!! PLEASE HELP!!!

    This book doesn't seem to exist within the whole expanse of the internet, even though I know it was printed and a number of people own it. I've tried 5 different websites and noone has a copy or lies that they do and then send me a refund a week later...crazy!
    Does anyone out there actually own this book and is willing to sell it to me and ship it to me. I'm willing to pay top dollar for this to happen within the next day or so! Please help! If you have a printable ebook file that would be fine too!

  • Acrobat Goes a Bit Weird in the Head Bug [ again? :) ]

    Ok, then. I open a document. The colors are a bit off.
    Well, well.. here we go again.
    I open the Acrobat preferences to check them.
    They look ok, so I don't change them. However,
    after I close the prefs window the colors change[1].
    The thing is, there are two ways of closing the
    window[2]. If I hit escape, the colors change.
    If I click cancel they don't. Err... lol?
    And I know what it is. If I've changed my monitor
    profile, Acrobat doesn't sense it when it is run.
    It only seems to notice when I hit escape as above.
    Man, this program's had more bugs than an entomologist's
    rucksack. I'm still in recovery after the "simulate black
    ink" fiasco.
    [1] I also click the document window. I think Acrobat
    gets a bit sleepy, so you need to nudge it like this
    once in a while :)
    [2] Actually 3 if you include "Ok". But if I'm not
    changing anything, I get a bit nervous about clicking
    that. You know, just in case I inadvertently changed
    some setting.

    You can try two options... One is a reset of your phone. Since your phone connects to all other WiFi sources except at home, a problem with the phone can be ruled out. The other option is to reset your WiFi router. Mostly a reset button will be provided either on the back or underside of the router. Try resetting the router. You may have to key in your connection settings again. If that doesn't work, upgrade the firmware of your router. That might solve the problem.

  • Exporting video from Avid editor to MPEG-4

    HELP!!!! I have an internet film contest to enter by the end of this week. I have finished editing it on AVID XPRESS PRO and tried to export it as an MPEG-4(it was a requirment) AND a QT movie onto my desktop. When I play it out, there's audio, but the video is a snowy pink/green/white mess. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE someone explain to me in layman's english what I have to do to make it play right. I have invested almost $2,000 in my film and for it not to be shown because of this error will be VERY dissappointing.

    Do you have QT-Pro? If so, try exporting from the Avid as a QuickTime reference movie, then using QuickTime Pro to export the reference movie as an MPEG-4 QuickTime movie (or just as an MP4 file). It only takes a few seconds to create the reference movie (as that just references the Avid OMFs on your media drive) but I have found that QuickTime Pro's export features often work better than Avid's.
    That's particularly true when I use the 3ivx codec with 2-pass output...there isn't any way to do the second pass using Avid's export utility, but QT-Pro allows for it.

  • Exporting H264 from Adobe CC - Avid Editors can't import

    We have 5 Avid Suites with Symphony and an Adobe CC Maximus Suite. When we export H264 Files from Media Encoder/Premiere CC the Avid Suites can't import H264 or bring them in via AMA. Any known issues with Avid and Premiere and the H264 Codec?

    It was using the Format: H.264. However, I have since switched to Quicktime Format and choose the H264 Codec and that they can import no problem.  The Format: H.264 exports a multiplexed .mp4 and while everything else I have plays and imports the Avid's can't. So looks like I'll be going the Quicktime route.

    For instance, if you want to put a dissolve between every clip on your timeline,
    is there a way to do them all at once, or do you have to do each one at a time?

    ONE click...no. But a couple, sure. Mark IN and OUT where you want this to occur. Then highlight all the clips and drag them into the CANVAS window and choose OVERWRITE WITH TRANSITION. It will do the default 1 second dissolve.

  • Subclips in Red project

    I am cutting "Sucker," a feature film, in Premiere, shot on a Red Camera in 4K HD.  I have been editing for years on Avid, FCP, and many other systems, starting with film and a moviola.  I switched to Premiere for this film because of the incomparable R3D workflow, especially since I am dealing with a film with a lot of special effects, and being able to go in and out of AE is just to darn attractive.
    After about a 2 week learning curve, I am pretty happy with Premiere.  I sorely wish for some features from other systems, but I also find that Premiere has things that other don't, which I like.  On the whole, a workable way to cut a feature film.
    There is however, one feature lacking in Premiere that is vital in my opinion for a comprehensive Red/Premiere workflow.
    Since every Red film that I have worked with is shot with seperate picture and sound, part of the Red workflow includes syncing dailes.  No problem, stick all the clips in a timeline, sync up the sound, link the clips and rename them.  But I am unable to take the linked picture and sound and turn them into subclips.  I checked with Help and confirmed that this is not a supported feature.
    That means that I am condemned to cutting from a sync dailies timeline to a cut timeline, I cannot stick the clips in a bin and cut from there.  Overall, I don't mind too much, that is what I often do anyway.  But say for instance I have a piece of red video with no linked sound ( a reaction shot for example) that I have cut into my edit timeline, and I want to quickly match frame and see what other sync dialog is on that clip.  Even though on the timeline that clip has the take name and number name assigned to it by my assistant editor when syncing and linking, when I hit match frame, the name reverts to the original Red clip name, and there is no sync audio.  Bummer.  So now I have to find the dailies timeline for that scene, scroll through and find the shot I need.
    There are also times that I want to organize footage into bins instead of timelines, which is what most Avid editors do, and cut from the bin.
    So this is a long winded way of asking:  Any chance in the near future of being able to make subclips from sunk picture and track?

    I cut from sequence to sequence by choice, adapting techniques I used editing film on KEM editing machines, (KEM was German editing Equipment manufacturer)  We would prepare rolls for editing organized by scenes or sequences, and cut from source roll to edit rolls.  We called the source rolls KEM rolls.  If the dailies for a particular sequence where extensive, we would make KEM rolls for all the Wide shots, others KEM rolls for the close ups, inserts etc.
    I make KEM rolls in PrPro as well as FCP.  Unless the scene is huge, I put all the shots for a scene in one sequence, sunk together, linked and renamed to match the slate (scn 4-1, scn 4A-1 etc).  I make shortkeys in my keyboard customization - (M) for setting markers, and another (sift+M) for  going to next marker.  I add a marker after the director says 'action' for each shot.  Now, I can quickly go from shot to shot to compare takes by hitting shift+M.  If I want to go back, I have a shortkey for 'go to previous edit point' which takes me back to the beginning of the take.
    As progress with editing the scene I keep adding markers for each line or action I want to compare.  If for example, the dialog for scene 7 between Ben & Jerry is:
    BEN:  You like ice cream?
    JERRY:  Yes I do.
    In my KEM roll for scene 7, I will make a marker before Ben says his line in the 3 takes of the master, 2 takes of the OS and 3 takes of the CU.  I hit Shift+M repeatedly so that I can hear the 8 ways that Ben says "You like ice cream?"  When I find the line reading I want, I mark in and out and then hit the Lift key (;) then, I hit shift+3 to switch from the scene 7 sequence to the edit timeline.  Then I select which tracks I want the video and dialog to be on (shortkeys for that as well) and I hit paste (control or command V, or shift+V for Insert Paste).  I sometimes chekerboard my edit, putting Ben's "You like ice cream" on video 1 and audio 1, and Jerry "Yes I do" on video 2 and audio 2, that way I can play with dialog overlaps.
    I then hit shift+3 to get back to the scene 7 and work on the next line.  By the end of the edit for the scene, the scene timeline is littered with markers and gaps where I lifted cuts.
    I also use the shortkeys for track selection in my KEM rolls in the source sequence to just select a line of dialog, or just select a reaction shot without dialog.  that way I am getting just what I need.
    Shortkeys I set up for track selection:  control (Command on Mac)+1 (numeric pad) for video track 1, then control+2 for video 2 etc.  For audio, I use option+1 for audio  track 1, option+2 for audio 2 etc.

  • Help needed with Avid AAF to Premiere Pro CC (w/wo/AE in the loop)

    Folks,
    I am taking over a feature film edit to finish in Premiere Pro. I want to use AE's Pro Importer to convert the Avid edit (AAF export) to an AE session and then export to PP CC.
    The 1st editor was cutting with Avid Media Composer. All the source footage is Sony AVCHD camera creating .MTS files. The Avid made .MXF proxies using Avid media DNx36.
    Here are the reasons for my problems (don't laugh):
    1. There are 20 days of footage in 20 folders. Inside each folder are X number of shots, the highest volume has 91.
    2. each day's footage starts with shot# "00000.MTS" which means there are 20 files named "00000.MTS" in this project.
    3. none of the source .MTS footage has any of the metadata filled out. Using an EDL an manually re-linking every single shot is a ROYAL PAIN, having to hunt for the right shot# 00041.MTS, example.
    4. The script supervisor's End of Day reports are riddled with mistakes of which scenes were shot on which days - says scene 8 was Day 13 but no Scene 8 footage in the Day 13 folder.
    5. Avid editor NEVER uses AAF export for Video, only audio. Everytime he tries, the AAF files either copy and link to the .MXF proxies in a new Custom folder OR are Offline/Missing on AE Pro Import looking at the AAF folder instead of my AVCHD folder contain all of the original footage.
    Can one of you MegaMinds help me help the Avid Editor (MAC-based) in AVID MC
    a. take his existing edit and re-link media to the original files
    b. export said edit to a NEW AAF with the original source footage files linked to the timeline
    c. get Pro Importer (AE) OR Premiere Pro to correctly import the AAF data with the original pathways (folder structure) for re-linking footage on my (PC-based) RAID
        -FYI-  Premiere Pro CC currently hangs up on import of his current AAF files.
    Help me Obi-wan Adobe, you're my only hope!

    Having similar issues.
    Premiere CC 2014 seems to have fixed AAF import hanging up.
    Avid "updated" the info contained in AAF relating to AMA linked material beginning with MC 6.5 and as a result AAF comes in with blank sequence.
    Avid says adobe needs to update AAF input.
    The workaround I have been using is to copy filename to clipname in MC relink to DNX media export AAF import into premiere and manually relink.
    Hoping Adobe will address issue.

  • Printing from PSE8 Editor

    Can anyone help me with a problem I have printing from PSE 8 Editor.
    I keep my unedited photos in PSE8 Organiser. When I am trying to select the best photos from a group of, say, ten photos for printing I open all ten in PSE8 Editor. I now edit each photo in the Editor and examine them to see which are the best ones and I will wish to do a trial print of each of those. This is where I hit the problem.
    If I select one of the ten photos open in Editor and try to print it I will get a strip down the left side of the Editor screen showing all ten photos. If I want to print just the selected one of the ten I have to remove the other nine from this list or all ten will be printed. If the photos are all very similar it is difficult to select visually which ones to remove from the list because the list does not show their names.
    What I would like is to:
    a) eliminate this list feature altogether so that only the photo I have as the selected image in Editor is printed, or
    b) have the list show only those photos I have explicitly selected for printing from the ten I have open in the Editor, or
    c) have the list show the file names so that I can at least identify the ones I don't want to print in this instance so that I can remove them from the list.
    I explained all this previously to Adobe but I don't seem to be understood. To illustrate the issue please try this. Open ten similar photos in Editor. Select one of those ten and select print. You will get a strip showing all ten down the left of your screen. If you just continue with the printing all ten will be printed. To print just the one you want you will have to identify and remove the other nine photos from the list. Having done all that and printed that one photo now select another of the ten photos in Editor and again select print. You will again get a list of all ten photos open in the Editor and you will again have to identify and remove from the list the other nine. Repeat this for a few more photos and you will be (like me) screaming with fury at the stupid thing. So, am I doing something stupid or is there a way to get around this behaviour?

    I have PEv.8, and below the work space in Editor, there is the project bin. On the left there is the tool box, configurable as one column or two columns.
    Multiple open files are represented in the project bin as thumbnails. There are 2 dropdown boxes: (1) to show open files or files from organizer (2) re bin files. Which options are ticked on your machine?
    Please post a print screen representing what you see.

  • Elements 12 Editor Crashes Before Opening

    A few months ago I bought and downloaded Photoshop Elements 12 from Adobe's website due to my Elements 8 crashing before it opens. For about a month it worked fine, but when I clicked on the logo Elements 12 wouldn't open. I would right-click my images and try to open them in Elements 12 but a window would pop up saying "Photoshop Elements 12 Editor has stopped working" (I use Windows). Using Safe Mode I fixed Elements 12 so that the window appears where I can click between Organizer and Editor. Organizer works fine, but when I click editor the loading bar appears and the "Stopped Working" screen would appear again. Does anyone know how I can use Editor on Elements 12 again?

    Can you get into the welcome screen?  If so then it is a good idea to reset the settings file to see if corrects any errors automatically.  to do this you need to do this:
    1) Press CTRL+ALT+SHIFT with fingers on one left-hand
    2) With right hand click on the editor icon on the welcome screen
    3) Look for a small window that looks like this:
    4) click yes and see if this solves the problem.
