Avid to IDVD compression issues

I've been cutting on an Avid then exporting quicktimes to burn dvds in IDVD for it's cool preset menus. I've got everything working, but I'm not satisfied with my picture quality. There seems to be a lot of artifacts and scan type lines that cut horizontally. I've been using H264 compression out of the Avid. My piece is 4min long and it's too large to burn a dvd umcompressed, it comes out to around 5 gigs.
What is the best compression setting for IDVD?

Don't compress out of the Avid. Create a QuickTime Reference Movie and send that to iDVD, assuming that QuickTime can play the .OMF's okay. All my stuff is DV and that works fine. If you absolutely must compress, then use DV. But create a reference movie first and see if QuickTime can play it properly (the aspect ratio will be wrong because it will be 720x480 if DV, 720x486 if 601, and QuickTime will display with square pixels). If QuickTime can play it, iDVD can convert it to MPEG-2 for the DVD. Or so they claim. 8-)
Advice over on the Avid forums seems to be to NOT use the Avid DV codec when transferring to iDVD because of color-space issues (601 vs. RGB or something like that). Also, if you have options for field dominance (I don't remember off hand if you do when setting up a reference movie), go with lower field first.

  • GZIP Compression Issue in Weblogic 8.1

Has anyone experienced issues with gzip compression filtering in 8.1?
After about 2 months of dev. and testing with the filter, a bug has been found
in our portal, and I have traced it back to the filter that I downloaded from
    dev2dev code and utilities.
It is strange. The only time I see an issue is when a user clicks the "back button"
in the browser itself to go back to a previous page, AND then clicks a link (for
example) in a portlet that is tied to an action in a jpf for that portlet. The
error only happens for actions in a portlet that are local to that portlet (no
forwarding to other portlets or anything fancy)...just pure "local internal forwards."
If you do this, USING THE BACK BUTTON to get back to this page with the portlet,
when you click the action, you are actually taken to the page where you were when
    you clicked the back button.
I have re-created this is simple portals that have no content, so I know it is
    not something else I introduced.
Any ideas? Maybe it is the filter-mapping pattern I am using??? I am currently
mapping on *.portal, but this is the only situation that seems to break.

For those interested, I have some updates on this subject and someone out there sent me a mail asking if I ever found anything out.
Basically, when I encountered this issue the first time, I was working on a SP2 Portal. We were having numerous small bugs like this one with SP2 that centered around the back button or refresh button. BEA gave us a "super patch" back in July or so that when applied to our SP2 project, fixed our issue. I have sense moved onto SP3, and I did not see the compression issue (so I think SP3 must have the patches correctly setup...like I would assume it would).

It is possible to autenticate to a proxy server, but the question is what tye of authentication your proxy is carrying out . "Basic" or "digest".If it is Basic then you can use Base64 authentication scheme. You have to first set the System property variable to find proxy server (like port and IP Address)

  • IDVD Quality Issues

Hello, I have been using IDVD to finalize and burn my Final Cut Pro and Adobe projects for a while now I have recently run into a problem I had not noticed before. I created a 9 min and 4 second video project using Adobe Premiere Pro CS 5.5. I exported as a Quicktime file, resolution 1920x1280. I have done this numerous times before, but usually around 5 minute long videos. With other projects I have noticed a quality drop when burning, but not this specific problem I am currently having. When the project is exported from Adobe, I make sure to encode at the highest render quality. When it is finished exporting, it is about a 1.86gb file. When I import the project into IDVD, it automatically compresses it to about 376MB using Professional Quality. After burning and playing back on the just burned DVD-R+ 4.7gb disc, I am faced with a distorted image. Whenever the camera moves, there is an etchiness to film, one that makes it look as if it has not been rendered correctly. It is definitely a lower quailty aswell, which is expected, but with this project it is unbearable. So to make this short and sweet, I am positive the problem is with IDVD, specifically when it compresses. So I am wondering if there is an option to stop IDVD from compressing at all to ensure maximum quality or if i would be better off learning to use DVD Studio Pro or Creating my own menu sequences with Adobe and usinge Adobe Encore for my burning. Thank You in advance for any help at all!

    Hi
.mov files - is no file format or video codec - it is a Container and can hold material iDVD can use or Not.
Open it with QuickTime Player and then open Inspector and read - Video format/codec: nnnnnnnn
    What does it read ?

  • IDVD 704 issues: chapters, save-as crashes, theme elements getting "lost"

I'm using iDVD 7.0.4 on a mid-2010 13" MBP with 6Gb of RAM, running OSX 10.6.5 . I created a new project, and applied an old theme I created in iDVD 5 or 6. The theme is basically empty, apart from a single backdrop image and a few font specifications. (I like things simple...)
I then imported a QT movie created with Final Cut Express HD 3.5.1 from 16:9 (anamorphic) PAL DV material. The movie contains about 9 chapter markers and was corrected back from 720x576 to 1024x576 in QuickTime Player 7.
The movie imported correctly, but chapter titles with accented characters were lost (issue 1)
Issue 2: Doing a Save-As of an open project provokes a crash - immediately if I use the keyboard shortcut, delayed if I use the menu. Yet it has worked a single time.
Issue 3: After finalising the project, I decided to do a final edit on the chapter title text colour. Impossible to consolidate that to disk: if I save a project changed in this manner, it will no longer open correctly. iDVD will complain about missing theme elements, and force the default theme on me.
I tried rebooting, but that didn't resolve issues 2 & 3 (didn't check issue 1 but that one seems a true bug or omission).
Any ideas? A quick peek on here didn't serve any similar stories, so am I the only one experiencing this?

  • Why is iDVD compressing images in my menu template?

    Hi All
I am compiling a movie in iDVD ver 6.0.3 on Mac Pro using the "Lines" template from 5.0 Themes for my DVD menu. This template let's you drop in some photos that scroll across the screen.
So, I dragged & dropped some high resolution images into the various drop zones on the template. They look nice and sharp. I click the play button to test the menu animation on my 23" cinema display and the images look good and sharp, scrolling along the screen and in freeze frame (see link to comparison image below). Then, as I continue working, all the images suddenly become compressed and full of artifacts.
Anyone know why iDVD is doing this and how to prevent it? If I try to drag the image back in, it doesn't go back to sharp. But what's interesting is if I change the name of the source file and drag it back into the template again, it will go sharp again, but eventually it will compress again.
    Any thoughts gang?

hi there, thanks for the reply. I'll admit I'm somewhat new to the DVD world. I had iDVD set to "Best Quality". I'll experiment with the settings you recommended. I'm also working with 720x480 footage in NTSC Video mode.
I did burn a test DVD and, on my tube television, the images look more or less fine, as does the video. When I popped the DVD into my computer and entered full screen mode on my 23" Apple Cinema Display (1920x1200), that's when the menu images and the video as well revealed all it's gnarlies -- but I suppose that is normal yes?

  • Avid codec pink/green issue in After Effects CC

    Hi there.
We're in the process of upgrading to CC at work and are running an Avid based edit to graphics pipeline. Currently our editors export to Avid mpeg 50 which works without any issues in AE CS5 - when we bring the same footage into AE CC it comes in garbled, split into pink/green colours, squashed to half screen and in the wrong aspect ratio. It's like the metadata in the file is not being interpreted correctly and telling AE to do weird things.
I am still in the process of testing at my end to find out if other avid based codecs are affected.
I've attached a screenshot to demonstrate what is happening:
We're running OSX 10.8.3 on Mac Pros.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as its preventing us from rolling out CC at the moment.
    Thanks,
    Ben

Thanks for the info Rick, Do you have any details of what version of the Avid codec is required? I'm also wondering if the codec would need to be upgraded on the Avid export end as well as the After Effects machine end.

  • Cube compression issue

    Hello Gurus,
we have some strange behaviours with cube compression.
All requests are compressed, but in F table we still have some records.
The same records are stored in E table too, but with BEx query execution we can see correct result.
If we execute query in debug on RSRT, with SQL code display, the query reads only from F table or aggregates.
    How it is possible?
We just provide to insert the COMPNOMERGE object in RSADMIN table, but only after the first compression. Do you think thath with a initialization of cube and a new compression with COMPNOMERGE object could solve our problem?
    Could you help us?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards.

    >
Well, but that's the whole point - the request ID!
That's why we do compression for at all - to merge together the data for the same key figures if they exist in both tables.
It's completely normal to have this situation.
    > I - If we execute query in debug on RSRT, with SQL code display, the query reads only from F table or aggregates. How it is possible?
    > You - Easy - you're statement about all requests being compressed is not true and/or it reads the necessary data from the aggregates.
    >
    > I executed with RSRT one of record which is in both tables.
Well, obviously there was some other implicit restriction that lead to the selections made by OLAP.
Maybe the request read from the F-Facttable was neither rolled up nor compressed.
    > Very helpful, thanks.
    > Any others suggestions?
I'd check exactly the status of the requests and where they can be read from.
You may also try out to disable the aggregate usage in RSRT to see whether or not the data is also read from the E-facttable and check the result of the query.

    Lars

  • From Avid to iDVD

Can I export a Quicktime from a PC based Avid Express Pro HD to work on iDVD? I can't make a Quicktime Reference as i will be using two seperate machines.
I need it to be full size and full quality.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Don't see why not. Be sure the export settings are for DV and not some other codec. Another option could be to just export back to tape and capture that tape with say iMovie. That may work better depending on your timeline... one-hour of DV is 13 gigs!

  • IMovie to iDVD sharing issues on a MacBook

I just purchased a MacBook and am quite familiar with the iMovie and iDVD working relationship. I have been attempting to share a iMovie file (using iSight on one attempt, and then .jpeg pictures on another attempt) with iDVD and keep getting an error message, (Error 0) to be exact. However, if I open up iDVD and import the iMovie file, there are no problems. With starting up the computer I have updated all the software that was available for this Mac. The version of iMovie and iDVD is 6.0.2 for both.
Any and all thoughts, ideas, similiar problems, or recomendations will be considered. How do I resolve this issue or is this an application issue?
    Thanks
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hello James,
I do not have an answer for your problem, but would in any case recommend that you do not use the "Share to iDVD" option in iMovie, but save and quit iMovie then open iDVD and drag in your movie from the media pane or choose File > Import > Video.
    This has two advantages:
    a. Only one app is open
    b. It avoids a bug present in iMovie concerning photos/slides described by Karl Petersen in this thread:

  • IMovie/iDVD Compression

I will have 10 4~6 minute movies in two weeks as I have made a movie per game for my son's first season of Soccer.
I'd like to get all the movies onto a single DVD so I can give them out to the rest of the team as well.
When I post them to iDisk they are (of course) rather small. However, at fullsize (for Quicktime) they run into the 2GB range. Clearly I won't be able to get many movies on a DVD at that rate.
What is the compression for iDVD? Is it likely I will be able to jam ~50 minutes of Audio/Video on one Disc?

As the others have said, don't worry about the compression etc. etc. iDVD will handle it.
I suggest you load iDVD select a very simple theme like Portfolio Color in the 3.0 Themes set and import the iMovie projects one at a time.
To make a really good job. Go to customize > Settings and Drop a still of a team photo into background. Then under the screen click Folder and label up two folders as you can only get 6 movies on a screen. Double click on one of the folders and put in 1-6 movies etc. etc. I'm sure I've made this look harder than it is.
Good luck, keep in touch here or on the iDVD discussions.

  • MPEG-2 Compression issue!!

I’m getting a very a annoying issue when using compressor.
I have a 04:80 second apple pro res export form final cut, which I am then importing into compressor and applying the SD DVD: best quality 90 mins template so I can burn to a DVD.
The compression goes through successfully, however when I play the mpeg file through quicktime it takes about 10 seconds to play and says the duration is 2 hours long. The video IS there in the first 5 minutes but it keeps going with a black screen for 2 hours. If I try to burn this to disc any other video before it plays fine but when the track with this file comes it does nothing and restarts.
I’m using the default DVD settings in compressor and have tried high bit rate and lower but still does the same issue. The apple pro res file seems to have nothing wrong with it. Also, if I cut a fragment of the video and export using FCP and compress that it seems to work fine with the correct duration.
Not sure what the problem is, any help asap would be great?

There may be a clip or two somewhere down the Timeline that you're not aware of.  In FCP, with the Timeline window active, set an IN and OUT point for the part you want to export ... then export.   If that doesn't work, try exporting a self-contained movie (File->Export->QuickTime Movie) and see if that plays OK in QuickTime Player 7.  If it does, use that file in Compressor.

  • Bizarre Sound Distortion on Export - Not Newbie Compression issue

I'm trying out the Flash CS3 demo - OSX. (Using OSX 10.4.10.)
I've got a slightly complicated timeline with about 8 layers
and some things alpha fading in and out, and a bunch of sound
samples being used as timeline sound effects (forget the term, but
attached to frames not streaming). No scripting.
The sounds are mostly too long for the amount of time
allotted to them in the timeline, and cut previous sounds off. I'm
speculating this might be a possible issue. That is, I have say a 5
second sound, which has only 3 seconds of time to play, before
another sound interrupts it in the same timeline layer.
There are two separate layers of sound playing at the same
    time.
All the original sounds are imported into the movie as
44.1/16bit AIFFs. They are mono files (might be another possible
    issue).
I'm trying to export with quality of 128k MP3. I've been
    trying different variations:
    - setting the compression for the audio files in the
Library/setting movie export settings to use Library settings
    - setting audio files in the Library to use "default
compression", and specifying the correct 128k MP3 setting in the
    export settings
    - or both of these (set individually in library, then
    overridden in export settings).
I've tried with and without the "use mono" setting (both in
Library files and export settings). (This is a question for me:
what should be the correct setting for that when the original file
    already is mono?)
Sometimes everything's great. I test or export the movie and
    the sound is fine.
Other times I test or export the movie -- with exactly the
same audio settings as the last time when it worked -- and now get
unbearably hideous hissing/cracking instead of the correct sound.
Most dangerously -- I think but haven't quite convinced
myself -- the same flash export file may sometimes play fine, and
sometimes play with the distortion. So I'm not sure if this is an
export issue, Flash player issue, or combination of export doing
something semi-weird that the player only sometimes chokes on. A
"bad" export is distorted both in the desktop Flash player that
comes with the Flash demo, and in a browser with Flash plugin 9 r45
    (OSX).
    GUH!
And this is the $800 product which is little more than a
basic text editor for scripting and an animation timeline that
hasn't gotten updated functionality since 1999.

This is a peer-to-peer public forum - if you demand
individual and undivided attention to your issue
then you can use the official adobe tech support.
As for your issue...let's go step by step:
[*The sounds are mostly too long for the amount of time
    allotted to them in the
timeline, and cut previous sounds off. I'm speculating this
    might be a possible
issue. That is, I have say a 5 second sound, which has only 3
    seconds of time
to play, before another sound interrupts it in the same
    timeline layer.*]
Is this intended? You are having an issue with 5 second
sounds being cut off after 3 seconds...why
not place them on different layers to avoid this? I don't
    understand the workflow here.
[*There are two separate layers of sound playing at the same
    time.*]
Ok - that makes more sense, so you have 2 layers both
containing sounds that cut each other off?
[*All the original sounds are imported into the movie as
    44.1/16bit AIFFs. They
are mono files (might be another possible issue).*]
Mono shouldn't matter - but the quality of the original will
matter - specifically the levels, if
the overall level is originally too high (or "hot"), then
clipping will occur once compressed from
    Flash (in some cases).
[Sometimes everything's great. I test or export the movie
    and the sound is fine.]
    Can you provide the FLA?
[Other times I test or export the movie -- with exactly the
    same audio settings
as the last time when it worked -- and now get unbearably
    hideous
hissing/cracking instead of the correct sound.]
Never heard of this before - need to see the FLA.
[And this is the $800 product which is little more than a
    basic text editor for
scripting and an animation timeline that hasn't gotten
    updated functionality
    since 1999.]
You may take exception to this but it sounds very much like
user error or something beyond Flash
(like an issue with the source audio files). Your opinion is
subjective but AS3, Flash, Flex is
hardly "little more than a text editor". True the timeline
hasn't changed much over the years but
funny that it is still the king when it comes to animation
across so many mediums - why fix what
ain't broken and works so very well for so many worldwide?

  • FCE - iDVD Chapter issues...

    Hi iDVD users...
I've got some school concerts edited in FCE.
Now i'm having a few chapter issues ...I've followed Ken Stone's instructions to the letter (and the posted suggestions here) and export to Quicktime, choose chapters etc, and when i open the file in QT it sees the chapters.
    iDVD preferences have chapters checked.
Disc one is 50 mins long, 6 chapters. But they don't show !
I'm really sure i'm doing all the right stuff....am I?
When i put the disc into the DVD player, i didn't even get the 'front page' from iDVD, it went straight to play.
I UN-CHECKED auto play in the first place !
I use OS 10.4.5, FCE HD 3, iDVD 6.o.1 and FWIW I have Toast 7.0.2
I'm coming under pressure from work, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
If it comes to it, I'll import to iMovie and do it that way, but I am loath to do that....
    cheers all...

You don't see the chapters in iDVD?
I'm really sure i'm doing all the right stuff....am I?
You are selecting only chapter markers when you export? Not all markers?
    http://www.fcpbook.com/Misc3.html
Finally, export using File>Export>QuickTime Movie. If the DVD is to be built on the same computer that has the media, uncheck Make Self-Contained yo create a reference movie. If you're moving the file to another machine, check Make Self-Contained. In either case from the Markers popup select Chapter Markers.

  • Audio compression issues in iBooks Author

Hi - I am having quality issues with audio compression. I have a voice only file. It is fine in the original recording. I have saved to aiff and m4a and dropped both into iBooks widget. The widget "optimizes" it and the resulting sound is full of echo and sounds like repeats of first and last consonants of words. I even thought that my stereo channels might be out of sync, so mixed down to mono. Same sound problems in iBooks.

Found the root of the problem and a fix
    1. Your audio file is at 48hz
    2. Convert to 44.1 hz in Logic or any other Digital Audio Workstations
    3. Export to a labeled folder with settings  AIFF or Wave 16bit
    4. From the folder drag and drop audio files in iBooks Author
IBook Author auto 'opitimizing' can handle that with no glitches or dropouts
