Avid....

Hi,
I'm soon to be purchasing a Macbook Pro for video editing purposes. I'm currently using Avid Xpress on a PC, but am interested in learning the ways of Final Cut and am considering purchasing a Macbook Pro. I was informed that you can get Avid for the Mac but obviously there's no Final Cut for the PC.
Sooo does anyone know about the compatibility of the current Mac version of Avid Xpress with the new Macbook Pros?
Any help would be appreciated!
Ta, Paul

You may want to hold off buying that MacBook for a month or 2.
1. AvidXpress not out yet.
2. Issues with Macbook being fixed by Apple in future revisions (see http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=1584)
3. Still a lot of software is not UB (intel optimized), although Final Cut is.
4. "Easy-to-use" Installer to put Windows XP onto MacBook being worked on, but not yet out. Current version complicated. lacks video drivers. (but when XP on Mac proj is complete this would allow you to boot into windows and use your current version of Avid Xpress). (http://www.onmac.net/ )
Give it a month or 2 and all issues will be resolved and you'll be able to get right to work on your new MacBook with less hassle. Just my 2 cents. For what its worth, I didn't follow my own advice and already bought my MacBook and I think its great.

  • How do I use my third computer with cloud. I am rendering a project in Avid Media composer

How do I get my third computer to work with when I am rendering Avid project on the other two computers computers

    Hi,
Running creative cloud on third machine will prompt you for the deactivation from last 2 machines. As per EULA for Creative cloud you can only install and work on 2 machines only, be it MAC-MAC, MAC-windows and windows-windows.
working on third machine without deactivation from previous machines is not possible.
    Hope this helps.

  • Importing Avid MXF Files to short in Premiere CC

    Hi there,
We are importing AVID Media Files MXF from MXF Folder into Premiere Pro CC 2014 and the longer clips are to short. All the long clips ends at 4min. 55 sec.
We were exporting the Files from AVID 8.3.0 as AFF, then importing in Premiere CC 2014 and linking the video files to the MXF Folder of AVID.
We tried also to consolidate all the clips from AVID again into a special folder, make a new AFF export and then import and link all again. But it gives us the same result.
Would be great if anybody knows a solution. The problem seems to be the import of the MFX Files into Premiere CC. The Export from Avid seems to be OK.

As Apple Inc.’s desktop and server operating system for Macintosh computers, OS X Mountain Lion (version 10.8) is the ninth major release of OS X. It’s quick, familiar, cheap, and drenched in iOS goodness. However, after updated and installed Mountain Lion on Mac, many Final Cut Pro (mainly FCP X and FCP 7) users found they could not import mts, mxf, ect files into FCP anymore.
You can try to redownload and reinstall the FCPX. If not, you can contact after-sales service to get a free way to solve the problem.
You also can ignore the problem and download and insatll a MXF Converter to convert MXF to FCP's antive format ProRes before importing. I have been using Brorsoft MXF Converter for Mac, it work fast and it can keep the original video quality for editing. Besides, the conversion process will help you to save the rendering time. The most important is that it has five types of Apple prores codecs for choosing.

Are there any dialog boxes popping up behind your Yahoo screen?
I have intermittent problems attaching files in Yahoo mail and this is usually the reason.  I'm also using an iMac (10.7.3) and this is likely the problem.
It is generally a Yahoo issue rather than a Mac problem.

  • Export project from final cut pro to Avid

What are my options to create a workflow that implies doing my last trims on Avid (Adrenaline and Nitris?)
My idea is to create almost ended videos on Final cut Pro 5 by myself and expend a last day or two on an Avid Nitris to do the final touches, mixing audio and output the stuff...
the videos are industrial video and small budget commercials that requires more effects that Final Cut can offer me...
    THANKS IN ADVANCE

First off, you'll need PRO EXPORT FCP>AVID from www.automaticduck.com.
Then you'll need to recapture all the footage used in the sequence into the Avid, since FCP and Avid capture media differently.

  • Trying to record Stereo Mix with a monitor through my headphones.  Using Screenium to record Audio and Video, using Avid MBox Mini with MXL 909 Microphone for the audio through the interface.

Basically, what I am trying to do is this:
Record my screen through Screeenium, record my voice as audio through an Avid MBox Mini (interface) with a MXL 909 microphone to pick up the audio.  I have all that figured out.  I'm able to efficiently record my audio and screenplay through these instruments and programs.  What I am having trouble with is the stereo mix.  I am running into a slew of problems here... My goal: Add on the audio of a game that I am playing (for example, Amneisia) so that the audio for my game will be picked up internally, and not through the speakers to be recorded through the microphone.  I want there to be no external sound except me talking into my microphone.  I also want to be able to HEAR the audio of the game through my headphones (and if possible, myself as well, through a monitor maybe?)
Problems I have run into so far:
-Haven't gotten it to pick up in game audio at all while using headphone.  Can't figure this out
-Downloaded soundflower, have the output as soundflower.  Not picking up anything, will put all my sound and midi settings at the end.
-When I do record through my microphone, it is only picking up a single channel (left earpiece only, no right channel)
-I have figured out it is NOT the equipment, I use Pro Tools and am able to pick up both channels with my mic, recorded a few tests. It's settings and I can't      figure it out
-Trying not to run 16 million programs while running the game, will cause lag.
    Summed up:
    Trying to record:
-Audio from gameplay of any game I am playing through alternative route of speakers (do NOT want to record game audio through speakers, internally)
-Record voice through Avid MBox Mini and MXL 909 microphone.
    -Record screen gameplay through Screenium
I followed a guide that told me to achieve "stereo mix'' I need to download soundflower and follow "X" steps.  That is done and these are my current settings:
Audio Midi Setup - Stereo Mix custom Aggregate Device, Soundflower (2ch) selected, Avid Mbox Mini selected, Soundflower Output #1 has 2 channels (1-2), using Avid MBox mini for "Input" in order to record.  Using Soundflower AND Avid MBox mini as "Output" in order to hear the sounds and replay game sounds (could be the problem? Maybe?)
Sound Settings - Output Stereo Mix (custom channel)  Input Avid MBox Mini (recording)
I'm hoping this isn't too hard to understand.. I'm VERY bad at explaining information regarding computers.. It's hard becuase I don't understand it.  I can clarify anything that I am able to, so any help on finding certain things would be greatly appreciated.
My computer: Macbook Pro MAC OS X Lion (11G63) 10.7.5  2.4 GHz Intel Core i7 4GB 13333 MGz DDR3  (If any of this is imporant)

    Hey guys,
I tried to do some research and it looks like you need to have an external device and its drivers, such as an external microphone, installed on the computer to record audio that can be saved as a sound file. Another Suggestion is to try an auxiliary spliter for your headphones and external speakers?
What software are you using to record your game?
If anyone knows anything different, please let me know.

  • Help needed with Avid AAF to Premiere Pro CC (w/wo/AE in the loop)

    Folks,
I am taking over a feature film edit to finish in Premiere Pro. I want to use AE's Pro Importer to convert the Avid edit (AAF export) to an AE session and then export to PP CC.
The 1st editor was cutting with Avid Media Composer. All the source footage is Sony AVCHD camera creating .MTS files. The Avid made .MXF proxies using Avid media DNx36.
Here are the reasons for my problems (don't laugh):
    1. There are 20 days of footage in 20 folders. Inside each folder are X number of shots, the highest volume has 91.
    2. each day's footage starts with shot# "00000.MTS" which means there are 20 files named "00000.MTS" in this project.
    3. none of the source .MTS footage has any of the metadata filled out. Using an EDL an manually re-linking every single shot is a ROYAL PAIN, having to hunt for the right shot# 00041.MTS, example.
    4. The script supervisor's End of Day reports are riddled with mistakes of which scenes were shot on which days - says scene 8 was Day 13 but no Scene 8 footage in the Day 13 folder.
    5. Avid editor NEVER uses AAF export for Video, only audio. Everytime he tries, the AAF files either copy and link to the .MXF proxies in a new Custom folder OR are Offline/Missing on AE Pro Import looking at the AAF folder instead of my AVCHD folder contain all of the original footage.
Can one of you MegaMinds help me help the Avid Editor (MAC-based) in AVID MC
    a. take his existing edit and re-link media to the original files
    b. export said edit to a NEW AAF with the original source footage files linked to the timeline
    c. get Pro Importer (AE) OR Premiere Pro to correctly import the AAF data with the original pathways (folder structure) for re-linking footage on my (PC-based) RAID
-FYI-  Premiere Pro CC currently hangs up on import of his current AAF files.
Help me Obi-wan Adobe, you're my only hope!

    Having similar issues.
Premiere CC 2014 seems to have fixed AAF import hanging up.
Avid "updated" the info contained in AAF relating to AMA linked material beginning with MC 6.5 and as a result AAF comes in with blank sequence.
Avid says adobe needs to update AAF input.
The workaround I have been using is to copy filename to clipname in MC relink to DNX media export AAF import into premiere and manually relink.
    Hoping Adobe will address issue.
    Thanks

  • Error message with Avid Media Composer 6

I have installed a free trial of Avid Media Composer 6.  I had it on my computer and it was working fine, but I thought there was an issue so I unistalled it, and then reinstalled it.  Now I am getting an error message whenever I attempt to open a project.  It reads..."Segmentation fault" in thread "MainThread", at address      0x0 ... and then the Avid Media Composer shuts down.  I have read that it is necessary to unistall any existing software first which is exactly what I did.  Im using lion on a 2 ghz i7 macbook pro.

    You should contact Avid support.

  • Avid MC Transport Control Surface now working in CS 5.5

Not sure if anyone is interested, but because Adobe doesn't have a EUCON integrated support, it greatly limits the control surfaces that can be used with it.
I googled a bunch of different things but in the end it seems like the general conclusion was that the MC Transport doesn't work with Premiere Pro, not a big deal if you don't have one, but really sucks if you do have one and use Premiere for a lot of your work.
However, following the age-old adage of "never say die" I finally figured out a work-around that has my Avid MC Transport working pretty darn good with Adobe Premiere CS 5.5 on my Mac.
I posted it here: on creative cow where you can see the whole thread: http://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/3/911511
    Hi Andree,
I had the same problem but figured it out, you can see it here http://wp.me/p1hbRg-e
or I'll paste it here for you as well:
I recently made the switch from PC to MAC for the long-form documentary  I'm making. A decision that so far, I definitely regret. But more on  that later.
For the moment I thought I'd start posting notes about problems I've run  into and solutions to them that I've found in case any one else runs  into these same problems.
I purchased the Avid/Euphonix MC Transport for use in my editing as having a jog/shuttle definitely speeds things up remarkably once you are accustomed to them.
However I didn't notice that Adobe Premiere was not supported and this  is my editing program of choice although I do have FCP and  Media Composer 5.52.
I googled around and even contacted Euphonix/Avid support and no one seemed to have a solution.
In frustration I then ordered a Contour Shuttle Pro v2 (which is sort of  like downsizing from a Porche to a Honda. Both great cars, but which  one would you kick out of bed first? Exactly.)
So while waiting for international shipping I tried a bit of a wild idea  and I installed the drivers for both the Bella Pro Premiere keyboard  (which I don't have) and the Contour Shuttle (which I don't have either) and then began customizing  the MC Transport commands to match the command keys in Adobe Premiere.
As a note; you might not need to do this on your system. I'm using a Mac  12 core and this workaround only worked once I installed those drivers  but logically speaking you shouldn't need to do it.
    And hey! It works!!!!
Some things aren't as perfect as they are in Avid or FCP such as the  shuttle wheel shifting to different speeds smoothly. But damn! The jog  wheel works perfectly.
Customizing the Soft Keys just involves ensuring that Adobe Premiere Pro  CS 5.5 is open and then choosing the soft key around the wheel and once  it is highlighted in the EUCON controller, then assigning a KEY  command.
For example your center three keys above the jog wheel should have J, K, and L assigned accordingly.
And however you wish to customize it after that. I use for cutting at  timeline (CTRL + K), next edit (page down), previous edit (page up) and  it is working like a charm.
All the other soft keys including shift command respond the same.
To program the jog wheel. Select it and choose Command, select Wheel  from the drop down, then select jog right and choose special command and  pick "right arrow" and then repeat for select jog left and choose  special command and choose "left arrow."
The shuttle you have to choose the shuttle and again add a wheel command  and then in choose shuttle and create a new shuttle wheel command. Then  from shuttle drop down, choose for Section 0 add key and set it to K  (stop), then for Shuttle Section 1 add L key once and for each shuttle  section add one more L key. Shuttle section 7 has LLLLLLL assigned to  it.
For the shuttle -1 Section choose J and for each minus section following that add one more J.
It's not perfect but it certainly does what I need it to do!
Hope that helps anyone else out there.
    Best,
    Darius

Thanks Pepe, seems to be a quick workaround! (FWIW in Logic 7.1, the command I see is Logic→Preferences→Control Surfaces→Rebuild Defaults. I assume that's what you're referring to.)
It'd be great if Apple/Tascam fixed this, but it only takes a second to rebuild the devices, so it's no biggie.

  • Adobe Customer Service vs Avid's

I recently upgraded my Adobe and Avid software suites and was able to make a better comparison between both companies customer service. First, I want to make clear that except for the Creative Cloud membership, I always buy my software from authorized resellers like Videoguys and B&H, and not directly from the manufacturers (Avid, Adobe...).
After a year using Creative Cloud for $29.99 a month, I decided not to renew my membership and save me $49.99 a month until I really needed the latest versions of the software I use the most. Right now I'm using Avid Media Composer for editing so all I need to complete my workflow is, Photoshop, After Effects and Adobe Media Encoder, and those are pretty good in CS5.5.  The following version, CS6, brought major improvements to Premiere Pro (GUI and under the hood) and the introduction of Prelude. It was hard, having to use Premiere Pro CS5.5 after using CS6, so I decided to upgrade to Production Premium CS6 perpetual license. These upgrades are sold only as Electronic Software Downloads (ESD, LIC). So I purchased the upgrade through the Videoguys website and that same day I received a confirmation e-mail from Adobe about my new Adobe License. So I click on the link provided and enter my Adobe ID. I was welcomed by a very intimidating screen with information about End User Organization, Deploy-to-contact and categories for different kind of licenses. I just wanted to install my software, so I went ahead and downloaded the installation image and got my serial key.
While visiting one of my daily forums I heard about the $19.99 a month, one year subscription to Creative Cloud full for CS6 users. Coming from paying $29.99 a month, I thought it was a good deal, so I decided to act, since the offer was good only until August the 31st. To my surprise, the system did not let me select the $19.99 option because my CS6 is a "Volume License". It was Friday night so both, Adobe and Videoguys were closed and since it was a holiday weekend, I have to wait until Tuesday to call. By that time, that offer was already over.
So today I called Videoguys and explained to them what happened. They told me to call Adobe since the problem was on their end. I then called Adobe and talked to a representative named Dolores. She said that they can't honor the special offer of a one year subscription to Creative Cloud (full) for $19.99 a month, because I have a "Volume License" and that was something that my vendor would have to fix. I told her that resellers only sell Licenses for ESD. She asked some questions that made me realize that she had no clue of how the process works when buying from an authorized reseller; (they are trained to handle only issues with their own ordering system). Then she said that there is nothing they can do since I did not purchased the upgrade directly from Adobe. So I called my vendor back and apparently I'm not the only one having that licensing issue with the upgrades.
How does that compare to Avid? They are also doing the Electronic Software Download only thing. I am going to miss the fancy boxes but this seems to be the industry trend. Anyways, what I really care about is to be able to use the software I already paid for until I decide it is time to upgrade. I had a Media Composer 5.5 and a Symphony 6 that I wanted to upgrade to version 6.5 with the option to later upgrade to version 7 for free. The problem is that the free upgrade to 7 offer was already over. So I called Videoguys and they told me that the offer was still good while supplies last. Just to be sure I contacted Avid through the User Forum and a famous Avid's Customer Advocate replied and told me to contact her privately. We exchanged e-mails and she even personally called me, (sometimes after office hours), during the whole process and after my problem was resolved, just to make sure I was 100 percent satisfied. They not just only solved my problem but also made me feel like a was a very important client with a large account.
I am not an Avid or Adobe fan boy. I like Avid products but love Adobe products even more. Premiere Pro CS6/CC is my favorite NLE, but in my market I can get more freelance gigs or a better staff position if I know Media Composer.  Just wanted to share my experience in case you are planning to upgrade your Creative Suite or need to contact Customer Service.

    Bill,
I understand your frustration. The whole situation sucks, but rest assured that Beverly and Adobe will take care of your problem. I am currently enjoying Adobe CC at a discounted price for one more year, thanks to their prompt response. I am disappointed that they couldn't change my volume license for a “single license”.  I’m afraid this is going to haunt me, since individuals always get the best deals. I learned a few things with this experience...All CS6 upgrades purchased from the resellers are now "Volume licenses". If you want a single license, you have to buy it directly from Adobe. Apparently Videoguys did not know that, since they blamed Adobe for the misunderstanding. I have purchased pretty much all my pro video software and hardware from Videoguys and always thought they were the top reseller in this market, but just noticed that they are not included in the Adobe Partner list. Which is very strange. I wonder if they lost their status as Adobe Authorized reseller.
I love the CC products and I see myself using at least CS6 for a long time, but I am a little apprehensive about my future business with this Company, due to their new strategies and the resent “hackers” attack. I was one of the many customers that received the scary notification and had to change my password.

I run a studio here in Atlanta.  YEster day morning I called an Apple store to see if I could buy a copy of Mavericks.  They forwarded me to Apple Care.  Apple Care tech and myself could not find Mavericks anywhere on the app store.  Avid does not support Yosemiteam yet, so I had no other choice but to purchase Mountain Lion.  It has been over 24 hours waI ting on Apple to "ship" / email me a code to download from the app store.  I read a lot of horror stories from when they rolled out Mountain Lion in 2012 about it taking 72 hours to receive the codes.  I hope that maybe it doesn't take that l9ng this time because I am losing money by the minute.  Microsoft would have had a code to me in minutes.  This is just crazy.  I have used Apple products for years, but this is very disappointing.  Anyone else ordered Mountain Lion recently?  How long dI'd it take Apple to "ship" you your code via email?  Thanks

From what I've read on these forums over the past few months, it hasn't gotten any better. An electronic order from any company shouldn't take more than 12 hours for a system to respond to, but people have been waiting up to a week for their redemption code email to arrive. It makes no sense to me why it would take that long.

Macs with a FireWire port will also boot happily from an External drive. You don't even need to open the MacBook.
Some users buy a drive they would like to have as a future Internal drive, and also buy an external enclosure. They get the External set up the way they want it, then swap with the Internal drive.

  • Media Encoder CS6 Avid DNxHD video codec settings do not update in video settings tab

I want to encode a file to Avid DNxHD, but I am unable to change the resolution in the codec settings. I am choosing Avid DNxHD codec within the video codec tab, then clicking on codec settings and choosing a resolution from the resolutions pulldown menu. It will let me choose different resolutions from that menu, but after I hit okay, it has no effect on changing the video settings the way it's supposed to. For instance, if I try to encode a file that is 1280x720 with a source frame rate of 23.98, and I choose 1080i/59.94 DNxHD 145 8-bit, the frame size and frame rate does not change in the video settings tab. I am running Media Encoder CS6.0.2 on a Mac with OS 10.8.4. I am using Avid quicktime codecs v.2.3.7, because my system is running Avid Symphony 6.0.2.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

No one ever responded unfortunately and I never figured out a work around.
In Media Encoder CC there is a system preset for DNxHD MXF which I've used
to yield Avid files. The weird thing is that the CC version does the exact
same thing as the CS6 if you choose quicktime, DNxHD codec, and try to
change the codec settings. None of the settings update. If you find out
anything more about this I'd appreciate getting an update. Thanks!

  • Will Avid MC 6.5 run on Mac OS X 10.6.8?

I'm buying a student version of MC and have OS X 10.6.8.  Is it going to run on my computer?

    The system requirements:
    http://www.avid.com/US/products/media-composer
say that 6.5 requires Mac OS X 10.7 or later. If you need to stay with Mac OS X 10.6.8, you'll apparently need to use MC 5.5.

  • Final Cut Pro to Avid for broadcast

    Hi,
I use Final Cut Pro to produce 30 TV spots.
I dont own Beta or DVCPro50 decks so i burn QuickTime Uncompressed 8 bit files.
At the broadcast station, they drop the QuickTime movie into Avid media composer v.12.
We had 3 choices for import setting in Avid:
    1) RGB
    2) RGB Dither
    3) 601
601 gave us the more accurate image, better contrast that seemed quite the same as i saw in my FCP editing suite.
What are the best FCP export settings and best Avid import settings to avoid any shift in luma and chroma ?
QuickTime Uncompressed 8 bit is YUV ?
Is Avid able to read YUV ?
    thanks

There are currently 3 main television standards used throughout the world:
NTSC - National Television Standards Committee. The oldest existing standard, developed in the USA. First used in 1954. Consists of 525 horizontal lines of display and 60 vertical lines. Sometimes irreverently referred to as "Never Twice the Same Color." Only one type exists, known as NTSC M.
SECAM - Système Électronique pour Couleur avec Mémoire. Developed in France. First used in 1967. A 625-line vertical, 50-line horizontal display. Sometimes referred to by wags as "Something Essentially Contrary to the American Method" or SEcond Colour Always Magenta!" Different types use different video bandwidth and audio carrier specs. Types B and D usually used for VHF; types G, H, and K for UHF; types I, N, M, K1 and L for both VHF/UHF. Different types are generally not compatible.
PAL - Phase Alternating Line. Developed by German engineer Walter Bruch and the German electronic corporation Telefunken. Walter Bruch patented his invention 1963 and the first commercial application of the PAL system was in August 1967. Also a 625/50-line display and variant of NTSC. Proponents call it "Perfection At Last." Due to the cost of the enormous circuit complexity, critics often refer to it as "Pay A Lot". Different types use different video bandwidth and audio carrier specs. Common types are B, G and H; less common types include D, I, K, N and M. The different types are generally not compatible

  • AVCHD to Final Cut Pro to Avid - how?

I filmed AVCHD material using a Sony HDR-SR12E. First, I put the footage in Final Cut Pro via the special logging dialog (is there a way to adjust the codec FCP puts the footage in?). After editing the footage in FCP, I would like to export the material using a codec, Avid can read, because I need to get the material to my editing company, which uses Avid.
    My questions:
    1. What codec uses FCP to import AVCHD and is it possible to change that codec, for example to Avid MPEG 50 mbit?
    2. Which codec should I use to export the AVCHD footage out of FCP in order to import it to Avid again? I want to lose as little quality as possible, of course.
    3. Is AVCHD a MPEG codec, which I think it is (MPEG 4, right) and therefore a upper field first codec? Would it, in this case, be appropriate to export the footage with FCP using a Avid MPEG 50 mbit codec?
Just for info: After editing the AVCHD scenes with Final Cut Pro and exporting the stuff to an Avid codec, I want to import the footage to Avid in order to get the .mxf files which I want to deliver to my production company via external hard disk. Is there a better and easier way to transfer AVCHD footage to an Avid?
Thanks a lot for your kind help.

You won't be able to convert to MXF, but you can download the Avid Quicktime codecs from AVID.COM and then export to those. That will be the best you can do.
