Avoid AMD at all costs! Get intel&Nvidia!

My brand new GX70 cant keep up my buddy's Samsung S7 gtx660m. The reason why....AMD's Enduro in combination with their A10 apu. You can google it, more than two years and they still haven't fixed the issues. In-fact AMD forced companies to removed posts about the issues. CoH2 Beta, Battlefield 3, Borderlands 2, and Guild Wars 2, all have the same problem. They can not fully utilize the gpu on low, med, or high settings. After tracking down some modified 13.6 beta drivers on a Japanese website, I managed to get Borderlands 2 to run between 13 FPS-98fps AVG 28fps on High/Ultra settings w/no PhysX . Guild Wars 2 is unplayable in populated areas even on low settings I average 12fps in the main cities. The integrated GPU actually outperforms the 8970m due to the low gpu usage. I've done clean installs of the 12.1, 12.3, 12.7, 13.1, 13.4 catalyst drivers along with MacHater's Enduro DX9 hotfix to no avail. Tweaked every known setting in CCC and nothing. After scouring the internet for about two days I found out that I am not the only one. Its a known problem that AMD has not addressed. It is also the reason why many of the boutique and other manufacturers have dropped AMD gpus all together. Also MSI locked the bios so you can not disable AMD Enduro with out voiding warranty by flashing custom bios. You have all been warned.

i would also like to add and ssd, something cheap like a 250GB mx100 but, I don't really like the idea of having to buy a retail copy of win 8.1. I mean my machine came with windows and j could try to clone the oem version but my os is corrupted.. I'm pretty sure this is due to the crappy HHD it has.. but windows still works. I'm a little torn about what to do about it.

No you dont need to buy new windows 8.1 or so just use burnrecovery tool in msi laptop create your USB recovery stick and a .iso version incase you wanna formate usb in future then you can atleast burn .iso's into dvd's then when you bought new SSD just run usb and it will restore your os back to new ssd , also 4700HQ goes to 3.4GHz max and 4710HQ has turbo to 3.5GHz max so depends on which i7 you got.

Having QuickTime installed won't hurt anything if you don't choose to use it.
Having QuickTime installed is necessary to import several kinds of .mov files (though Premiere Pro can handle some natively, as in the example that Colin gave)---so, if you are going to use .mov files as source media, you need QuickTime installed.
Exporting to QuickTime is sometimes required by some clients. Though you may try to dissuade them, the client is (usually) the boss.
If you have a choice, and you care about color fidelity, don't export to QuickTime. QuickTime has a jumbled, half-implemented way of kinda-sorta doing color management. This method doesn't even work reliably within Apple software, meaning that people can't roundtrip media just within Apple applications with consistent color in some circumstances. This absolutely bedevils us, as we keep trying to hit this moving target. Any time someone tells me that our color management system isn't working, I _know_ (well, strongly suspect, anyway, with a very high rate of being right) that they're using QuickTime media.
Because QuickTime is a 32-bit software component, we had to create our own intermediate process (QT32 Server) to communicate between QuickTime and the 64-bit Adobe video applications. This component can diminish performance but, more to the point, it can be the source of some other problems. The one that springs immediately to mind is the fact that aggressive firewall programs seem to hate QT32 Server, as described here:

Avoid Skype at all cost.

I had been using Skype for over 12 years, and just decided to delete my account (if possible!). My account was illegally accessed and my entire balance used to make calls to Cameroon. For two weeks, I have been trying to get Skype to simply tell me how my account was accessed (whether there were repeated tries at guessing my password or whether the person logged in on their first try, or whether they hacked their way into their systems some other way). The process has been infuriating to say the least. IMPOSSIBLE to get an answer, their constant reply : "We are sorry for the inconvenience, however, Skype takes our customers' privacy and confidentiality very seriously, and therefore we cannot disclose this information due to our Skype Privacy Statement. This is the reason why we advised you to contact a member of the law enforcement agency with regards to your request." Can anyone else see the irony? ...And contacting the law enforcement to know whether someone illegally accessed my account on their first try? Seriously?

Try and avoid BT at all costs

I have now been without internet (dont care about the telephone) for 2 weeks. BT took one week to send out a technician to see where the problem was and he discovered that it was under the road, so maybe another few weeks tp dig the road up and fix the problem. Meanwhile I am spending at least 15 pounds a day in mobile internet. Cant get to speak to anyone that knows anything about when this might get fixed...crazy! If Virgin had fibre optic here in Combe Down Bath I would never had contracted BT for internet.

I have reinstalled Mac OSX 10.6.3 and done the updates from there.
I have reinstalled ilife 11 from disk and done the updates.
I have deleted all the suggested files and then redone install and updates.
I have tried just reinstalling iphoto and doing updates.

How to get OpenGL 4 on an intel/nvidia laptop

I have the following setup:
A lenovo T430 with intel/nvidia graphics.
I managed to get the nvidia driver and bumblebee installed. So far I am able to run games such as L4D on my machine.
However, Metro 2033, requires OpenGL4. Right now I have the mesa-10.3.5 implementation of OpenGL, which provides OpenGL 3.0.
Can anybody give me some hints.

NVIDIA's proprietary graphic card driver doesn't depends on mesa anyhow, Mesa is used with Intel driver on your laptop.
You have Nvidia NVS 5000M Series videocard (NV5x).

For GeForce 8000/9000 and 100-300 series cards [NV5x, NV8x, NV9x and NVAx] from around 2006-2010, install the nvidia-340xx or nvidia-340xx-lts package, available in the official repositories.
If you are on 64-bit and also need 32-bit OpenGL support, you must also install the equivalent lib32 package from the multilib repository (e.g. lib32-nvidia-libgl, lib32-nvidia-340xx-libgl or lib32-nvidia-304xx-libgl).
Reboot. The nvidia package contains a file which blacklists the nouveau module, so rebooting is necessary.
Be sure noveau deleted from /etc/mkinitcpio.conf if you had it, I suggest you don't need it for now.

Oh S_it, my intel iMac 2008 wont boot, flashing question mark is all I get.

Bought a friends' intel duo iMac 2008 which was working just find until a couple of day's ago and now when I try to boot it up all I get is a flashing question mark. I unplugged all components, including the electric cord and that worked the first time but now nothing. I don't have the startup or recovery disks. Must I have these...what's a girl to do? HELP!!!

You don't need those discs, unless you need to test for Hardware, or reinstall the original operating system.
But you should get them anyway. Any software they installed on your machine, you should have the discs for as they are not their's to give away copies because of licensing restrictions.
The first step to try is zapping the PRAM:

Sounds like the new drive is not being recognized. Could be it's a SATA3 drive with a 6Gb/s transfer rate and needs to be jumpered down to 3. But if the 2007 is 1.5, it may not work at all, even if jumpered down. Other possibility is a not properly secured cable or a cable that's come loose from the logic board.
What is the model of the 2007 Mac? What's the new drive? Did you do the installation or was it done by a shop?

Bought a refurbished Macbook without operating system. Trying to get an OS installed but all I get is a white screen?? HELP!

I purchased a refurbished Macbook pro without operating system.
This is my first Mac, but have heard they are very simple and much more intuitive than Windows,
I've had the machine for three weeks now, and it's been nothing more than a paperweight!!
A friend said he had his old install disks, which happened to be exactly what google said I needed to start out as: version 10.5
When I boot holding the OPTION button down, I get two options. Windows (with an up arrow below it) and Mac OS x Install Disk 1 (with an up arrow below it).
I can move the mouse, and move the cursor with my arrow keys, to select either Windows or Mac OS install. The problem is - if I select the Mac OS install,
the disk starts up (I can hear it), but it never does anything. I can no longer move the mouse / cursor after selecting it. It will stay for hours like this with no progress.
On the disk itself, it says MAC OS version 10.5. This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not be sold separately.
It also says: to start up from Mac OS x, hold down the C key as the computer starts up. When I do that, all I get is a gray screen.
I've also tried the shift key when starting up (supposed to be safe mode?) but same thing - gray screen.
The only way to even eject the disk (scared the heck out of me) is to start up holding the OPTION button.
If I select WINDOWS after using the OPTION button, I get an IBM message:

I assume this is what they used to wipe the hard drive before sending...
Obviously I am Apple-illiterate, but I've spent days going through chat rooms, etc. and came up with nothing.
At this point, I suspect either:
1) The machine is junk and needs to be returned OR
2) The disks are bad and/or can't be used for a clean install
I don't want to waste money buying a brand new OS, only to find out that the machine is bad.

That model originally shipped with a special Intel version of Tiger. You should be able to install any retail version of Leopard or later. I would recommend you start with Snow Leopard. Snow Leopard requires a minimum of 1 GB of RAM. If you have 2 GBs of RAM then you could install Lion or Mountain Lion.

After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.

Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.

6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

I just moved a machine from debian to archlinux due to the newer packages. Anyways, since yesterday I have been trying to get the nvidia module to work but haven't had no luck. Basically I get a black screen once I run startx and afterwards I can't switch back to any of the consoles. The system doesn't hang because I can SSH into it from another machine and do whatever. Killing all the x-related processes doesn't recover the screen, only restarting the computer gets the ttys back.
I have tried several different nvidia module versions include 1.0-7664, 1.0-7174 and 1.0-6229. I have also the stock 2.6.11.10 kernel and a custom compiled 2.6.11.11 kernel. If that wasn't enough I have tried the xorg generated xorg.conf file and the hwd generated xorg.conf file. Below is what I am running.

just to be sure we are singing from the same hymnbook, have you:
-- followed the wiki info as your logs show the DRI section still intact (bottom of xorg.conf)
and from wiki,
-- installed nvidia via pacman, with X server shut down. and then modified xorg.conf accordingly.

other tidbits
maybe try backing up xorg.conf first and then removing redundant lines #'s etc to make your config file more readable, and 1, 4, 15 bit resolution entries too.
The last time i had the blackscreen was in Fedora, it was mentioned that a kernel patch by fedora, was fouling the nvidia drivers. So i blamed fedora, chipsets, patches, drivers, witchcraft etc. Swapped to arch , followed the WIKI destructions and all worked ok. so im sure it can be solved here too.
FWIW my xorg.conf can be found here if you want something to refer to. in the interests of jurisprudence, copy/modify at your own risk. i cant/wont pay for fried monitors
incidentally nv in the Section did work for me instead of nvidia but was no real solution as i wanted to use GL and it wouldnt work with it, just runs a generic vga driver and not the nvidia one.
