Avoid modified and original folders

Hello,
I started to sort my pictures thanks to the roll rather than thanks to the albums. This way, I save times when archiving: no need to export all your albums, you can directly copy the sorted roll folders from your Iphoto library. Those folder can be directly open and your pictures viewed with any kind of software. My problem is the modified and original automatic folders, Because, I need to move the content of the modified pictures into the originals ones and replace the duplicate. It is the way I have found to merge the original and modified pictures of the same roll. Is there a way to avoid the creation of the modified folder. I would like to have all the picture of one roll in the same folder in my photo library. I could make duplicate of the picture I want to keep the original but with all the pictures in the same folder.
Thanks in advance.

Hi, ohdelyne. What you are trying to do is substitute your own photo organizing scheme for the one that iPhoto imposes, and that enables iPhoto to function. If you do that, iPhoto won't function.
If you want the benefits that iPhoto offers, you must leave the contents of your iPhoto Library folder exactly as iPhoto has arrranged them. If you arrange them differently, you won't be able to use iPhoto at all, and you shouldn't try. Instead, use a different photo viewing application and do all your organizing manually.
Some Mac users find iPhoto's inflexible organizing scheme annoying or inconvenient for some purposes and perfectly acceptable for others. Such users (and I'm one) import some photos into iPhoto and let it organize them, and keep other photos in folder hierarchies they've created in the Finder, and use other applications to view, edit and manage them. This can be a fine alternative to handling all one's photos the same way. I have about 100,000 photos on my hard drives, and only about 20,000 of them have been imported into any of my ten iPhoto libraries.
Maintaining multiple iPhoto libraries for diffferent purposes or categories of pictures can also be very helpful in overcoming the disadvantages of not being able to alter the structure of a single all-encompassing iPhoto Library.

  • Removed photo's still in the Modified and Originals folders

I removed all pictures from my Library (iPhoto '08). There still remains more than 1 GB of space. I see a lot of photo's I removed in the "Modified" and "Originals" folders. Can I remove them without destroying the Library? (I need the library because of the keywords etc.) Or is there another solution to make the Library minimal again?

Have you empied the iPhoto trash - iPhoto menu ==> empty trash?
When I duplicate the library and remove from both libraries the part I need in the other library, you don't get all free space, the removal of pictures would suggest. So the two Libraries together use much more space than the original library.
This is a different question that you originally ask
TO split a library I would recommend using iPhoto library manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/
It will move photos and keep their attibutes - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/Help/preserving%20photo%20attributes.html

  • Why does iPhoto 11 show both modified and original photo files for items I've never modified?

I have been looking through some recent photos and noticed that File > Reveal in Finder displays a modified and an original file for images I've never modified.  The originals are in subdirectory iphoto > Masters and the Modified files are in subdir iphoto > previews.  This appears to happen strictly with photos taken on my iphone.  Any ideas?  It's eating up a fair amount of HD space, for no reason as far as I can tell.

#1 is patently untrue; I go in there all the time via File > Reveal in Finder so that I can grab images to pull into other applications, mail clients etc.
Actually it is patently true - what you are doing is not supported, is not necessary and is dangerous - you should only access the photos using the supported methods
#2 - I thought maybe that was it too but it's on images both vertical as well as horizontal.  There's even images in there that are just still frames of videos taken on iphone.
2 - the most common cause of un-expected "modified" versions is having the autorotate feature set on your camera - this causes a rotate flag to be set so that when yu import iPhoto does that and as always keeps the original and keeps the rotated version as mopdified
Given that you provided no information about your work flow one can only guess at common reasons
The jpeg preview of each video is also a modified version - as to why both vertical (portrait) and horizonal (Landscape) photos would have modified versions more information would be needed - the most likely cause is that you have made changes of some sort to them

  • Why does iPhoto 6 imports all photos in two folders: modified and original

I upgraded from iPhoto 5 to 6. Now I have all my photos in the order and with the name I have given to the rolls. Great!
However, everytime I import new photos from my compact flash card iPhoto automatically modifies the photos by reducing the size and adjusting the orientation. These photos are on average 25-50% of the original size and are saved under the folder: pictures /iPhoto library /modified.
At the same time iPhoto saves the original photos to the folder: pictures/iPhoto library / originals.
The problem is that having more then 6GB of photos this set-up starts to fill my harddisk (presently an additional 2 GB).
How can I change or cancel this feature. Does anybody have an idea or similiar expierence.
    thanks, Baguette

How can I change or cancel this feature
    You can't.
Does anybody have an idea or similiar expierence.
    Everybody does.
iPhoto is not just an image viewer, but is a Database with a built-in image viewer, version control and lightweight editing.
A Note about the iPhoto Library Folder:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way. This also includes photos that have been auto-rotated by your camera.
This allows the Photos -> Revert to Original command - very useful if you don't like the changes you've made.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
So each element is there for a reason and there is no actual duplication.
The notion of version control (the ability to revert to an Original) is central to the philosophy of the application, and if you don't want the feature, then the application may not be for you. There are many image viewers available.

  • Modified and Originals folders in iPhoto

As I understand it, once a picture is in iphoto, if it has to be rotated, which iPhoto does automatically, the rotated picture is stored in the Modified folder. The 'unrotated' picture is in the Originals folder. How do I go about erasing all the ones in the Originals folder without having to go in one by one, because it is taking up approximately 3.8 GB of space?

    flaquitonice:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I'd be very careful using iPhoto Diet. Just tried the remove unrotated originals option and it did what it said. It copied the rotated files into the originals folder replacing the unrotated versions. But the roll was removed from the library. I did a rebuild of the library selecting all of the options. That did not bring those files back into the library.
Here's how I would do that. But, be sure to make a backup copy of the iPhoto Library folder beforehand. If you have a number of regular edited modified files in the library you'll have to be able to separate them from the auto-rotated modified files. One way would be to do a global Revert to Original in the library and then wait a minute. The auto-rotated files will get recreated. Then try the following:
1 - copy the Modified folder to the Desktop
2 - open the Originals folder in the Finder
3 - move the contents of each Modified subfolder into the corresponding subfolder in the Originals folder, replacing the files.
4 - launch iPhoto and do another global Revert to Original.
This process places the modified version in both the Originals and Modified folders. The revert to original then removes the copy in the Modified folder leaving the copy in the Originals folder (which also is the modified copy).
iPhoto Diet went as far as Step 3 but removed the folder containing my test files entirely. So I don't recommend you using it for this purpose.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Moving photos, some modified and some original to external hard drive

I have about 3000 photos that I would like to move either to my external hard drive or DVD to free up some space. My dilemma is that I would like only to have one of each picture. What I mean by this is that if I have modified a photo it seems that both the modified and the original are copied. I don't need duplicates. But if I haven't modified the picture I would need the orignal to copy. Thoughts? Thanks.

Hi, bows4474. If you select pictures in your library and Export them to a folder on your desktop or elsewhere on your hard drive — being sure to select Original Size in the Export dialog box — then that folder will contain the modified versions of pictures you've modified and the original versions of pictures you haven't modified. It won't contain the originals of pictures you've modified. It also won't be an iPhoto Library database folder, so it won't contain any thumbnails, albums, film rolls, books, slideshows, etc. that were created in iPhoto — it will simply be a folder full of image files. You can then burn it to CD or DVD, and you won't need iPhoto to access and open the files on any Mac or PC. But they won't be organized as you organized them in iPhoto, and if any of them have the same names, you won't be able to put same-named images in the same folder without one of them replacing the other(s).
To get all the pictures back into iPhoto at any later time, you'd probably want to create a brand new iPhoto Library and import them into it. Importing them back into the same library you exported them from would duplicate every one there, creating real havoc.

  • 'Info' file count varies between original and copied folders

Unlike Snow Leopard, Lion and Mountain Lion 'Info' counts hidden files in folders (usually .DS files).  However copied folders, often to different locations, computers, etc, do not count to the same total as the original folder.  How can I stop 'Info' counting hidden files in a folder, so that I can check acturately folder contents between original and copied folders.  I do not want to have to open each folder and check the count at the bottom of the window, this is very time consuming when dealing with many folders
I hope there is an easy answer ??

You can do this simply in Terminal with the command
    ls [directory] wc -l
This will only count the files and folders at the top level (i.e., not the contents of folders within it) and it won't count hidden files.
    Examples:
if you want to count how many files are in your home user folder
    ls -1 ~/ | wc -l
If you want to count how many files are in your desktop folder
    ls -1 ~/Desktop | wc -l
If you want to count how many files are in a folder called 'Temp' on your Desktop:
    ls -1 ~/Desktop/Temp | wc -l
If you want to count how many files are in your Trash:
    ls -1 ~/.Trash | wc -l
If you want more sophisticated counts, such as subdirectories, type
    man ls
into Terminal to read the manual on the various options you can use with the 'ls' command.

I lost the original folders and files for my website. I have new files to upload to the site but when I synch, the website still shows the original files. How do I get rid of the old and replace with the updated website files?

    1.  Are you sure that you are uploading to the proper folder on the remote site?
(have to ask as some people don't realise that the files need to go into a specific folder as specified by their host).

the problem is that we have a lot of pen drive, portable external harddisk using in the office..
is there 1 Microsoft patch to solve this issue once and for all... to prevent the autorun to activate?
This is just because of infection is propagated.. As a result files are hidden..  attrib is great as it is suggested by S Guna . May be you can make a batch file or something like that? But there is a chance of reinfection if you don't clean your infected
systems as well as your pendrives..
Plug your infected flash drive and
Use one scanner at a time
Download hitman pro 3.7 (shareware and can be activated for 30 days free)and have a full system scan including your pendrive.. http://www.surfright.nl/en
    And/or
use malwarebyte have a full system including your pendrivescan http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/
    And/or
Use Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool  downloaded from uninfected pc and transfer to you pc and install and have a full system scan
    http://www.kaspersky.com/antivirus-removal-tool?form=1
If everything fails, you can use offline bootable resccue cd and do a full system scan...
    https://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/rescuedisk
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-defender-offline-faq
    or hitman kickstart bootable pendrive
     http://www.surfright.nl/en/kickstart
    Then
(1)Check whether your files are hidden.. Most of the time files and folders are hidden as a result of pen drive malware infection..
It will change the attributes of the files/folders.
In that case u can use attrib command and
    attrib -s -h -a -r
This is how it is used.. attrib method is common for windows

  • Deleted files from the Original and Data folders - help?

    Hello,
I imported my fiance's iphoto library to try to recover photos that I lost from when my hard drive crashed. They first were not importing into iphoto (while the files were on the harddrive), so I placed them in my Originals/Data iphoto folders. Now I have 6-8 versions of files that I don't even necessarily need, mostly thumbnails and a few of the original files.
I know I have made a lot of mistakes... so at this point what do I do- I've stopped manually deleting folders from these categories, but I do not want to lose what precious pictures I had from before the harddrive failure, and how do I get back to a iphoto library without duplicates?
    Please advise!!! Thank you!

My library still opens within iPhoto- will it continue to do so? Do I need to do anything now (since I have already messed with the Originals and Data folders?)
In addition, iPhoto now shows me blanks for some pictures/events, is there a way to have iPhoto scan the entire computer and realize files are missing and to ignore them?
Therefore it is not a fully functioning iPhoto library - it is corrupted
3 - if you do not have a fully functioning iPhoto library then quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library to the desktop, launch iPhoto and create a new library and then open the bad iPhoto library on the desktop and open the originals folder and drag each folder from it onto the iPhoto icon in the dock (or the iPhoto event window) to create events with all of your photos, then back up and run duplicate annihilator
Since you have corrupted your library you can do anything you want to it before you create a new one from the remaining photos

  • How do I stop iTunes from creating duplicate entries and sub-folders?????

I am SOOO SICK AND TIRED of iTunes deciding to create sub-folders all the time. I just want to have one big folder and throw all my music into it. I have now spent several weeks trying to re-create my music library after my hard drive crashed, and iTunes keeps messing everything up.
If I let iTunes do what it wants, I end up with two or three copies of each song. If I try to consolidate my files by deleting extra copies of songs, suddenly iTunes can't "find" anything.
When I go looking for the "missing" songs, iTunes creates endless fractal layers of folders within folders.
    I AM SICK OF THIS!
I AM ABOUT TO ABANDON ITUNES AND GO BACK TO WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER.

    CodeVII wrote:
Why when you have a large number of files it is better to have them in sub-folders???
Unchecking both those options still doesn't stop Itunes from putting files in Artist and Album folders..
The problem I see with putting music files in folders is if you want to move them or change the file properties with just the Operating System they take longer to access. So quicktime seems like something I'd try but....
I'd like to have the option to have my files in one Folder/Directory.
iTunes really wants you to use iTunes to manage the iTunes library. If you use the operating system or third party tools to modify tags, iTunes won't detect the change until it has some reason to access the tag, e.g. during playback. In contrast WMP will sniff out changes in your tags and update itself automatically.
Once you've got your media in iTunes why do you need to access it again at the folder level? As it happens I'm quite obsesive over the structure of my files both logical and physical (see grouping & scripts) but I strongly recommend others to avoid the temptation to waste too much time over the physical layout and leave iTunes to get on with it...
Many other programs have offered choices for folder structure, invalid character replacement etc. over many years without iTunes joining in. I suspect that the developers of iTunes have long since decided that extra choice in this area isn't necessary since "it just works", though by all means drop a line to iTunes Feedback.

  • Aperture 3.3 Bug? Dragging to external editor can modify the original

As a follow-up to the thread below I explored the role of the previews in Aperture:
Edited image appears then quickly reverts to original?
The problem: When dragging images from the Browser to Photoshop (supposedly passing along a preview of the image) the original image file in Aperture could be overwritten.
Experimenting with this I found that the result depended on the size of the image, for the following reasons:
If the Preview size was set to a larger value than the actual image size, then Aperture would not generate a preview for images without a preview, but pass the original image to Photoshop. Saving back the changes in Photoshop would modify the original master image file in the Aperture 3.3. For images larger than the Preview size, Aperture 3.3 would pass a new quasi master to Photoshop - rather wasteful, since this quasi master is not linked to a version and this not accessable in Aperture.
Experimenting showed, that the same happens with dragging to GraphicConverter, but the changes to the original are only visible after quitting and relaunching Aperture.
I would be grateful if someone could check out these observations:
Do you also see, that no previews are generated in Aperture 3.3, if the original image is smaller than  the preview size set in the preferences?
Can you confirm, that Photoshop modifies the original image files, if the image does not have a preview image, and if the image is passed by dragging from the browser?
I tested the same in Aperture 3.2.4: Here it seems to be impossible to drag an imageto Photoshop and GraphicConverter, if it does not have a preview image - very sensible.

  • ICE-transport resets modified and modified by properties

I am using ICE to transport content between portals during a reinstall/upgrade. For one of my content areas / folder structures the property values for modified and modified by are reset in target portal on import. The modified property is set to todays date, and the modified by property is set to the user who is doing the import (package upload in ICE).
All other areas / folder structures seem to be behaving nicely, keeping values set in portal from where the export is done.
The folder structure holds XML-form published items / news.
    Any hints or tips?
    Henning Strand

    Carsten
For all other repositories than the one mentioned, the original property values are transferred to the new portal. My experience now is that in most cases all properties are indeed transferred, but:
    Scenario:
We are installing new environments rather than upgrading existing portals. Thereby we have to transfer all of our repositories and content - which we are doing by creating ICE packages which then are uploaded to the new portal 7.
It was during the initial transfer, when checking through all repositories on our new portal, I saw that this specific folder structure had not been transferred with data for properties modified and modified by.
Instead of the original property values, the content was presented with modified = import date and modified by = whoever was doing the import.
Now, interestingly enough, after doing multiple exports and imports of the same folder structure, it seems that the original property values have been transferred.
I don't like this uncertainty as It's quite critical that all property values are transferred through ICE. Therefore all hints and tips will still be very welcome.
