Avoid putting images in Aperture-specific "silo"?

I have nearly 5,000 images, Photoshop CS6 user on PC, recent Macbook Pro 2.6G 1Tb.  I'm considering Aperture for the Macbook.
Does Aperture insist (like iPhoto) on importing RAW/JPEG files into an internal app structure before I can work on them?  Does it require that images be exported from that structure to standard files before they can be available to other non-Aperture-aware applications (including PC applications under Parallels)?
Aperture will be right for me only if it can work on standard RAW/jpeg files "in place" in their locations of my choosing without the in-app import/export effort (like Photoshop does).  In searching this forum I see mention of importing "by reference", and of a "no duplicates" instruction.  Will these things let me "import" as I need?
If so, can I subsequently save edited images with a simple "save as" in a standard file and location of my choice, or is it more complicated?

Short answer:  look elsewhere.
Long answer:
Aperture handles files the way it does for a reason.  It is deliberately, specifically, and elegantly designed to _not_ work the way users now expect (you load a file, you make changes to the file, you Save or Save As and either over-write the loaded file or create a second file.  There are two primary benefits of this newer way of working with data.  First, it allows a non-destructive workflow.  Aperture _never_ alters the files you import.  Your "digital negatives" remain untouched, and are always available for new processing, either by Aperture or by another program.  Second, it requires _much_ less storage space.  If those, and the other benefits the program provides (some due to this structured workflow, others inherent in the tools the software supplies), are not valuable to you, then you should not use it.
1.  Yes, you must import your image-format files into Aperture in order to access them from Aperture.  Aperture is a database.  When you import a file, Aperture creates a record for that file.  As a convenience, you can also have Aperture move that file into Aperture's database.  The database is called (stupidly, imho) a Library.  The Library holds hundreds to millions of files, but it shows in Finder as a single file with the extension ".aplibrary".  Moving the imported file into the Library, to be stored alongside its record in the database, is the default behavior.  But Aperture doesn't care where you store these files, which, once they are imported, are called "Originals".  They can be anywhere Aperture can access them.  Locally-mounted storage is recommended.  Aperture provides robust tools for relocating your Originals, anywhere, inside or outside your Library package, at any time.  Aperture even allows you to make changes to the metadata of your Image (which is based on, but is not your Original) when your Originals are off-line (that is, not accessible by Aperture).
2.  Yes, it does.  This is a feature.  You don't create, or store (and pay for storage) a _file_ of your Image until you need it for printing, sharing, or using in another program.  You create image-format _files_ of your Images by exporting.  You can export any Image at any time.  (Additionally, Aperture provides large thumbnails, called Previews (you set the size of your Previews) to other programs via the OS X Media Browser.  These are available all the time.)
3.  You can leave your files in the current locations and still import them into your Aperture Library.  When you import them this way, Aperture creates a record in your database, and stores the location of your file.  Again, Aperture doesn't care where you keep your Originals (as long as they are accessible).  Once you commit a file to your Aperture Library, however, you must not make any changes to it by Finder or any other application.  If you change the file outside of Aperture, you risk corrupting your Library.
4. I'm not sure exactly what you're asking here.  Aperture provides an impressive latitude in the settings for the files you create when you export your Images.  You determine the size, the file format, the compression ratio (if applicable), the file name, whether to watermark the file, etc.  In general though -- and this takes us back to the bit about Aperture's workflow differing from what user's currently think of as "correct" -- you don't create a share-able image-format file from any of the Images in your Library/database until you need to share it or use it.  When you do, you make it and send it on its way.  One of the benefits of using Aperture is that you don't ever create and save files you work on.  You work on your Images, any adjustments or changes to the metadata are saved automatically (in small text files, actually), and you leave the internal file management to Aperture.  I like to think of it as an _image manager_, different from a file manager.  I think it is brilliant, and exceptionally useful.  But you have to relax your grip on files and file management if you are going to get much from it.

    Have you checked your "Import" settings for "Raw&Jpeg" pairs in the "Import" panel?
    You can set Aperture to import raw, jpeg, or raw&jpeg.
    If you imported Raw&Jpeg, but have set Aperture to use the Jpeg as original, you will see the imported image as Jpeg image, not as a raw image, even if the raw has also been imported. You can switch between Raw and Jpeg originals for selected images from the Photos menu:
    Photos > Use Raw as original.

    Command(⌘)-9 is no longer listed in the list of default keyword shortcuts, and it has no effect.
    I wrote a little Automator service to bring the Command(⌘)-9 back.

    This service uses three actions:
    Aperture: Get selected images
    Export Masters
    Finder: Set the Desktop Picture
    To install it, open the workflow in Automator and save it as service.
    To use it, select any image in Aperture, then activate the service from the Aperture menu -> Services, and it will set the master of the selected image as Desktop picture.
    If you like, you can assign the Command(⌘)-9 key to the service (in the System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Keyboard Shortcuts Panel) and then  turn any image you selected into Desktop wallpaper by simply pressing (⌘)-9.
    @Frank Caggiano, if you are still following this thread: for some reason this workflow succeeds with exporting the master, but I could not get it to work with the versions instead. Any ideas?
    Caution: this service will clutter the Desktop with the exported images. If you want to avoid that, change the export action to export the image to a different folder.

  • Place images to a specific spot in a template

    I am trying to create an action that will drop images into a specific spot in another document and save it with a certain file name. After the first image is dropped in and saved, I want my next image to do the same and so on. I have all my images cropped to the correct ratio and being pulled from a folder on my desktop. I have my template open in Photoshop where I want my images from that folder to be dropped into. Is this possible?

    What you want to do can be done but it is complex and actions have some limitations and can not use logic without using a script or two. File saving  can be tricky for an action will always save the same file name or use the current document name saved either overwriting the file or saving it to some other particular folder. Action that populate a template can be created but it will always populate the same number of images because an action can not use logic to find out how many spots there are to populate. There are different ways to drop an image into the active document you can paste into an area or just past in the image in as a new layer.  You can also Place images in as smart objects. Each method has some advantages and disadvantages. Layers can also be aligned with selections and layers can be transformed in size.  Your best off creating rule for creating a template and have a plan as to how your going to populate these templates that follow your rules. To protect the template from alteration you may want to dupe the template close the original and work on the duped version. When you dupe the template you can give the dupe a name if you do not name it the new document will have the same name with copy appended.
    Scripting is more powerful then Action but they are programs that are written in a scripting language. Photoshop supports three languages. VBS, Applescript and Javascript. Only Javascript is supported on both the MAC and PC platforms.  Even using Javascript you may need to code the script to work on both platforms for I'm sure there are some differences in the OS and file system the may need special handling to work on both platform.  From you description of you work-flow it is hard to tell exactly what you are doing.   If you trying simple create a photo Collage.  You may want to have a look at my free Package for Photoshop called "Photo Collage Toolkit" . I have been told this package works on a MAC but I created it and tested it on widows and got it To work with CS2, CS3, CS4 and CS5.

    Photoshop scripting is powerful and I believe this package demonstrates this.

Rags's has given me permission to include a modified version of his script in my package. The modification converts Rags's layered image template document into a flattened template compatible with Photoshop "Photo Collage Toolkit" package. There is also an option that will instead create a layered image stack like Rags's templates are these are also produced if you attempt to create a template with more then 53 images.
    Photoshop only supports up to 53 Alpha channels therefore with its design the Photo Collage Toolkit can only support collages with 1 to 53 images. I do not feel this is a big limitation for if you put 53 3:2 aspect ratio images on a large 16" x 20" paper they would need to be less then 1.9" x 2.86" in size if you wanted a frame around each and less then .95" x 1.43" on a 8" x 10" year book page size.
    While the maximum number of images in a collage is 53 you can actually create larger collages by populating a large number of images into several collages and then populate yet an other collage template with these populated collages. Each will be placed into the collage of collages as a single smart object layer. You may want to save the populates PSD file as Jpeg files first to cut down on the overhead of having large PSD file smart object layers in the collage of collages.

    A watermark is a visible graphic overlay that is applied to an image. Photographers often use watermarks to indicate that images are protected by a copyright and discourage others from inappropriately using their images.
    You can import a graphics file and add it to your images as a watermark.
    To add a watermark image to your exported images:
    1 Select the images you want to export.
    2 Choose File > Export > Versions (or press Command-Shift-E).
    3 In the dialog that appears, choose Edit from the Export Preset pop-up menu.
    4 In the Export Presets dialog, select the export preset you want to use to export your images.
    5 Select the Show Watermark checkbox.
    6 Click the Choose Image button.
    7 Select the image you want to use as a watermark, then click Choose.

  • Exporting Images With Only Specific Metadata

    How do I export images from Aperture with only specific metadata. Example: I want to export my images with only the copyright IPTC metadata (and maybe the keywords or contact info etc., but I don't want the world to see the EXIF data.
    Aperture manual (page 507 I think) says to do this I need to make a separate version with only the metadata I want to appear. Er right? How does one do that then Apple!? I know how to make another version by the way, but how can I switch off/strip the exif, but keep the IPTC? Surely the monment I tick the include metadata checkbox in the Export panel and hit go this EXIF data will be inserted as it is inherent with the file?

    Time to hit the Aperture feedback page. If you include metadata, you include the EXIF data.
    About all you could do is export with no metadata, import the new 'stripped' file and then lift-n-stamp the IPTC data onto it, then export that.

    We have several ways of geotagging images before they are transported into a Aperture library, but I would have liked a way of tagging already existing images and have already suggested that apple could include this in the Import Menu.
    Is it unlikely that Apple will have a look at ways to geocode images inside Aperture in the future?

    You can read the AppleScript dictionary in Script Editor.
    Assuming you would use IPTC tags for this, here is the relevant information:
    IPTC tag n : This class represents an IPTC tag of an image version.
    elements
    contained by image versions.
    properties
    name (string, r/o) : This is the name of the IPTC tag.
    value (string) : This is the value of the IPTC tag.
    So you could create a tag for geographic location and put GPS coordinates or whatever in there. Writing something to iterate through your photos and update this information based on name/value pairs wouldn't be THAT hard.
    Note Automator could also help here -- it has an action "Set IPTC Tags":

    This action will apply the chosen IPTC tags to the Aperture images passed from the previous action.
    Input: (Aperture Image)
    Options: You can tab between the various text fields in the Action View. Select the checkboxes next to the text fields whose value you wish to apply. Checkboxes will automatically be selected upon text entry into a field.
    Result: (Aperture Image)
    This is just building blocks -- don't expect me to guide you how to write it -- but with experimentation this shouldn't be too hard if you have AppleScript and/or Automator experience. The latter is more approachable for the novice. The former is more powerful.

    Images in Aperture cannot be used by other programs.  You export your Images in order to make a file you can use in other programs.  You use an other program to burn files to a DVD.  That program is Finder.

  • Savings images from Aperture to external hard drive

    I have a basic question about the file structure on Aperture and mac's. I'm an old pc user, so I have not had a chance to investigate the structures yet and hoped I could get some guidance on this.
    If I import several images from a camera SD card into Aperture, the images are deleted when the import has finished. How do I later copy the images from Aperture to say an external hard drive?

    Bjorn -- welcome to the forum.
    Aperture is an image database.  The Aperture database is called a Library.  The database consists of a list of Images, the files needed to create those Images, and a whole bunch of data associated with each Image.
    The files needed are the originally imported file, and the set of instructions Aperture uses to "adjust" the original to create your adjusted Image.  On import, the original file becomes a Master.  The Master is _never_ altered (this is the "non-destructive" advantage of this kind program).  Aperture doesn't care where the Master is stored, as long as it can find it (it should be a locally attached drive).  If you let Aperture store the file itself, it puts it inside the Library.  If you tell Aperture where you want to store it (other than than in the Library), Aperture makes note of this by storing a pointer to the location you choose.
    Masters stored in the Library are called "Managed Masters".  Masters stored outside the Library are called "Referenced Masters".
    (The file listing the Adjustments is the Version.  The Version is always stored in the Aperture Library.  Versions are small text files.  The cost in storage and read-time is so minimal it can be ignored.)
    So:
    - Library (presumably in your Pictures Finder-folder)
    - - Master
    - - Version
    or
    - Library (presumably in your Pictures Finder-folder)
    - - Pointer to Master
    - - Version
    - Master (wherever you specify)
    There is no connection between Aperture and any data files that are not imported into the Library.
    If you make copies of your photograph files prior to import (an excellent practice), there is no connection between Aperture and the copy you do not import.
    Here is a short guide I posted to the parts of Aperture every new user should know well.  Read through it, and ask questions as you move forward.
    Note that making backup copies of your originals, copying or moving your originals, and making them Managed or Referenced Masters are all options presented in the Import dialogs.

  • Archiving Images Using Aperture

    I keep a lot of images off line due to storage space. Most of the time I do not run the images through Aperture before they go onto DVD. What I'm wondering is I want to use Aperture to manage the images still keeping them off line. But each time I import the images it creates a new project, which I don't want. I want to put the images into a folder under a different project but Aperture will not let me.
    Am I going against the grain for Aperture. Does anyone have a better workflow suggestion or solution?

    You can only import into Projects or into Albums - Folders in Aperture are just for collecting together either Projects or Albums.
    I'd suggest creating Albums in the Project rather than Folders.

  • Can not view images in Aperture

    I  was editing images in Aperture 3.5.1 ( latest Mavericks / iMAC) and went to add  sharpening using CTRL + S when all the images dissappeared in the viewer.  
    I can still see the thumbnails - I can export original images etc - I just can't see anything in the viewer - it's grey and blank.
    There are NO filters / searches in place (the usual gotcha for hiding images).
    Initially I had the feeling I must have mis-queued the keystroke for sharpening and somehow hidden the images in the library. But now I find that all of my libraries have this problem.  Aperture will only display thumbnails and nothing in the viewer.
    Coudl this be a "delete plist"  scenario?  Any clues for further invesigation greatly appreacited as I'm stumped.

    Thank you for yur reply and sorry I have taken so oong to get back to you.  We just had a catergory 2 tropical cyclone cross the coast a few km away - been a little pre-occupied.
    That said - the problem has gone away.
    During the session where it arose I restarted the system twice and the systems persisted - so I am a little mystified.
    And again thank you for reminding of the "try new user account" wrinkle  - obviously the first step for serious troubleshooting.

    I just bought and started using Aperture, as I was hoping to get a better way to organize my images vs. iPhoto.  However, I'm not sure what is happening in Aperture, but everything is out of whack.  For example:
    1) Aperture is not sorting the images correctly by date (see iPhoto vs. Aperture) (not sure what its doing actually)

    Basically, nothing in Aperture is showing correctly.  How can that be possible?  Any suggestions?

    What is your Aperture version? If you just bought it, it will probably be Aperture 3.5.1, but then your profile signature " Mac OS X (10.5.6)" could not be right?
    Looking at the examples you posted, it looks to me, like Aperture's sorting by date is correct - at least the images are ordered by the numbers in the file names, and that strongly suggests, that the capture time in the exif tags is in that order.  I don't know any camera that would name the image files with sequence numbers other than ordered by capture time. Then iPhotos order would be out of sequence with respect to the capture time. Or have you adjusted the  "Dare & Time" in iphoto to deviate from the capture times? How did you transfer the photos from iPhoto to Aperture?

    If the thumbnails do not correspond to the actual image files, then rebuild the thumbnails of your photos in that project. Select all images in Aperture in the Browser, go to the "Photos" menu in the main menu bar,  and use the command "generate Thumbnails".
    After that, you should be better able to judge the ordering of the photos from the thumbnails in the browser.
    If receating the thumbnails does not suffice, repair your Aperture libry, and if necessary, rebuild it.
    Hold down the ⌥⌘-keys while launching Aperture, and keep holding them firmly, until you see the Aperture Library First Aid panel. Select "repair database"

  • How do I remove images from aperture?

    Totally new to apple and aperture so I apologise if this seems like a somewhat noob question but how do I remove images from aperture (using the latest version, 3.4.1)? Coming from a PC and using lightroom I'm used to being able to remove images in two ways:
    - removing the image from the "library", so that it no longer shows up in the program at all but is still on your hard drive (when I say removing it from the program entirely, I mean entirely, i.e. not sitting in a trash can or some other place where it's still taking up memory)
    - deleting the original image off the hard drive
    Is it possible to do either of these things in aperture, on both just a single image or a selection of multiple images, and if so how? I've tried googling this already and am getting a bunch of mixed solutions, none of which have really worked so far, so any answers would be appreciated. Thanks!

    The answer partially depends on whether you have a managed or referenced library. Since you're totally new to Aperture, I'm assuming you have a managed library since that's the default.
    FYI: Managed means Aperture handles image files and places them inside the library file. Referenced means you manage the image files and Aperture only points to (references) them.
    For a managed library, select an image you want to delete. Type command-delete. (That's the reverse delete key next to the "=" key). (You can also right-click an image and choose Delete Version) That will remove the images from their Project and place in the Aperture Trash. They're still taking up space in the Trash. If you really want them gone for good, right-click the Trash in the library pane and select Empty Trash. Poof.
    For a reference library, I forgot the exact details since I don't use this type of library, but you'll be asked (or can check a box) to delete the original file from the disk.
