Avoiding preview stuttering problems

I am creating a new post here as I marked the last one I posted on this subject as answered.
In that post I asked would a new graphics card help to eliminate the severe stuttering caused by my windows xp machine (2 intel P4 processors 3.2) failing to decompress the MP4 files from my Sony NEX-5 quickly enough? The answer was an unequivocal NO as it was the processors, not the card.
Since then I have been doing some experimentation:
I downloaded trial versions of Cyberlink Power Director and Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10. The latter stuttered worse than PE but the Cyberlink app had almost faultless previews - no stuttering. Unfortunately it is a pretty horrible programme otherwise, and any case I am used to Premiere having use an early version of PP for years, so I experimented some more:
In PE I created a project with a project setting of PAL-AVCHD-HD 1081i25, loaded some MP4 clips taken with theNEX 5 on the MP4 1440 x 1080 setting and then burnt the project to DVD.
I then saved the movie as an AVI, removed the original MP4 clips and imported the AVI file I had just made. The project asked me if I wanted to change the project settings to match the clip and and I said yes. I then burned this to a DVD.
I then deleted the AVI clip and imported the original MP4 clips (into what is now effectively a PAL-DV-Widescreen 48KHz project setting I imagine). This time I was not asked if I wanted to change the settings but a red line appeared above the clips indicating they needed rendering. I rendered them and  - voila! No stuttering - perfectly smooth preview of the MP4 clips. I then burned this to DVD.
Next I compared the DVDs on a Sony 42inch HD TV. No difference! All three of very good quality, at least to my eyes..
So what is happening here? When I rendered the clips in the PAL DV project was it turning them into  AVI files because of the project settings? And is it that the first DVD (with the MP4 clips straight from the camera), which I would have expected to be of better quality than the other two, was not actually producing a HD DVD inspite of the camera and project setting?
Is the only way I am going to get true HD to set the camera to AVCHD and burn to Blu-Ray?
If any one has knowledge of these things I would love to hear from you as while I seem to have found an answer to the stuttering I would love to know what is going on and if I am fooling myself. Many thanks.

Thanks for the reply.
I have not explained myself very well.
There is no problem with the DVDs - whatever settings I use to edit, the DVDs play very well, smooth and reasonably high quality in my estimation..
And as far as I know there is no interlacing going on as I am not using the camera's highest avchd setting (which is interlaced), only the 1440x1080 MP4.
The problem is with the editing previews, which when I open an HD project and import my MP4 camera files is very jerky to the point of being almost unusable at times, with long waits during operations. A look in Window Task Manager shows both CPUs maxing out all the time. According to the reply I had from an earlier post, this is because my CPUs are not up to the job of decompressing the MP4 files on the fly.
What I have found is that if I import my MP4 files into a project with DV settings, I get a red line above the timeline. If I then render the clips, the editing improves dramatically - no stuttering at all and no long waits after mouse clicks or key presses and the CPUs only working at about 50%. Of course it can take a while to render a number of clips, but I can go and do something else while that is happening and when I return the editing goes like clockwork.
My question is - what is happening to the quality of the video? I cannot see any difference in output (DVDs) whatever project settings I use, they all seem equally good. So hopefully I have found an answer to the preview stuttering problem. But I suspect I am not getting real HD from any of them. To do this I imagine I need to set the camera to AVCHD rather than 1440x1080 MP4 and burn to Blu-ray. This I have not tried yet as I do not have a Blu-Ray burner.
My problem is my ignorance of what PE is doing to the MP4 files when it renders them. And why, if I set the project settings to HD 1080i25 instead of PAL DV and work directly on the unrendered MP4 clips (and put up with the stuttering) do I not see a visible increase in quality when I burn the DVD? Is there some sort of levelling going on during the DVD coding?

I have read plenty of the posts on the subject and it seems that deleting the "3ivx" fixed the problem.  I looked at the detaied reports and see where it says "

On my report it says "/Library/Application Support/iLifeMediaBrowser/*/iLMBiPhoto8Plugin".  Does this help with an answer?

I am also having this crashing problem. I am running lion on a 2010 mac mini. My iPhoto library is kept on an external drive. • Stuttering problem after update to 6.0.6

I'm getting that annoying stuttering problem for the first time. Whenever the playhead gets close to the end of a clip, it freezes up and then picks up a few frames after the start of the next one.
I've tried everything, including cleaning up my hard disk, tinkering with playback preferences. Oddly, this seems to have appeared after the update to 6.0.6. Before that, everything was working brilliantly. Am I missing something?

No way to revert back as far as I know.
I believe I was able to correct the problem. I'm not exactly sure how but this is what I did. I went through and cleaned up every project and all stray FCP files that were no longer in use. I then loaded a project off an external drive with a very large project on it, and what do you know, everything worked fine.
I went back to the projects I was having trouble with and completely deleted them. The only thing I saved was the raw footage I had pulled off a DVD. I started a new session, imported the footage and everything worked.
I don't know if perhaps the format of the footage was the issue but I seem to be back in business.
    Good luck Elliott.

  • The stuttering problem is solved, I think, I hope, Oh I hope so!

Thanks to a lot of help form people on this forum and an Apple specilist on iMovie here is what I have done.
I spent over an hour hours on the phone with a specialist on iMovie today. We ran tests to try to see what was causing the stuttering. He suggested that I try setting up another account and try to duplicated the problem in the test account. I found that impractical because I could not get to any of my sounds or movies that I had made in my profile.
Here is what I am going to try to do. I logged back into my profile and opened a movie that is stuttering. I deleated the music that I had in the lower sound track. that did not stop the stuttering. Next I opened a new movie and copied half of my voice narration into the upper sound track in the new movie. No stuttering. I copied the other half into the upper sound track, the stuttering is back. Discouraged.
Next I deleated the second half of the narration and no stuttering. I copied and pasted all but the last 9 clips of the narration and no stuttering. I saved the movie and quit iMovie. I reopened the file and NO STUTTERING. Next I will copy and paste the 59 photographs. Everything is working great, NO STUTTERS. I also copied some narration from another movie and still NO STUTTERS.
Karl Perersen described how to copy music files to a disk in the AIFF format and I have done that. I am going to finish the movie pictures, effects and narration before I put the music into my movie. And you can bet I will rename the file and make a backup.

I am making several movies of old family pictures that I will use to make a DVD. I have been working on this project for about a year and a half so I have used several versions of iLife. This current movie is only about 7 minutes long, it has about 60 photos and just over 100 clips of narration. the narration is my voice using the iSight camera as a mic.
I am trying to keep good records of the problems that I have experienced making these movies. Maybe this will help someone else. There have been several posts to this forum of other people having similar problems. I had no problems until I updated to iLife 6.0.2. Once I started trying to use iMovie 6.0.2 everything fell apart. The first thing that happened was that I got a dialog box as iMovie is loading that tells me that one of my video cards is not "Quartz Extreme" compatible.
My computer is one of the first Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5's that were sold. I don't remember the year. It has 2 GB of memory. I have two internal hard-drives, the 150 GB that came in the machine and I installed another 250 GB internal hard-drive. I also have a 115 GB and a 400 GB hard-drive, these are external drives. I have used three monitors since well before I bought the G5. The video card that Apple installed is a Radeon 9600 Pro, it is Quartz Extreme compatible. I had a Radeon VGA added when I bought the computer, it is not Quartz Extreme compatible. iMovie would run but the effects would not work properly.
The first problem that I had to deal with was the problem with the non-Quartz Extreme compatible video card. I called Apple, explained my computer system to a "specialist" upon his recommendation I bought another Radeon 9600 Pro video card only to find out that the board only fits in the AGP. There is only one AGP slot in the G5, all of us users should know that "Right" ? I called Apple back, got another "Specialist", he tells me he knows all about a Mac because he is a "Specialist", he says get a Radeon 9200. I will fit into one of the PCI slots and it is Quartz Compatible. I got the video card and installed the card, same problem, it is not Quartz Extreme compatible. I am a bit irritated at this point so I call Apple back and get another "Specialist". After explaining the problem he tells me that Apple does not test any of the video cards to see what will or will not work. He suggests that I call Radeon and nVIDIA since they make most of the video cards for the Mac. I learned nothing from them. Some one on the forum suggested that I disconnect the monitor cable from my third monitor. I did not think that it would work but it did. Now I can use iMovie and the effects do work. However, I am short one monitor. Once you use three you are spoiled with all of the monitor space.
Once I got the hardware to work I opened one of the movies that I had not completed before upgrading to 6.0.2. It had the "Stutters" so bad that I could no longer work on it. I opened a movie that I had completed before the upgrade, it stuttered also. I opened several others and they all stuttered. They will all burn to DVD and play just fine but I could do no more editing on them because of the stuttering.
If you have read the first posts in this discussion you know that I think that I have found a work-a-round to the stuttering problem. I hope that Apple will correct the software problem with an update before I have to redo all of my movies.
I had to start over this morning on the movie that I was working on yesterday, my narration was all out of sync with my pictures. But, it will be a good test to see if I can repeat the process and not have the stutters. For some reason if I copy and paste all of the narration at one time it has a slight stutter. So I had to copy in about thirds.

  • Audio stuttering problems with certain exported MP4 files

I'm currently running Captivate 6.1.0.319 on my old and decrepit Pentium 4 machine that has 4GB of RAM and is running Windows 7 SP1. I'm developing an online training course on RoboHelp 10 for Udemy, and they require all lecture files to be in MP4 format. Unfortunately, some of the MP4 files I generate from Captivate have audio stuttering starting a few seconds into the generated video and nothing I try fixes the problem.
All the videos are being recorded with video dimensions of 1360 x 978 pixels. I import the .cptc file I recorded into the .cptx file, and then I import an MP4 audio file into the .cptx file. When I finish editing the .cptx file, I publish it to an MP4 file using the highest video settings and the highest variable bitrate audio settings.
I have tried the following to try to fix the problem:
    Turned off SWF compression.
Created a new .cptx file and copied the slide from the problem .cptx file into the new one, and published that new .cptx file.
Disabled all software operating in the foreground and the background.
Tried generating the MP4 file on my laptop; the laptop runs the same version of Captivate on Windows 8.
As I said, Captivate generates some MP4 files perfectly without any stuttering, and others have the stuttering problem. If this problem sounds familiar, it's because I wrote a couple of messages about this a few months ago and despite some good suggestions, I wasn't able to solve the problem. I've spent my time during the past few months trying to find another program that will convert SWF files to one of the formats Udemy supports -- MP4, MOV, or FLV -- without success. Captivate exports to SWF and HTML5 format files without any trouble at all. But MP4 generation is spotty and I need to get this resolved so I can get this project off my plate and start making money off it.
If you have any further questions, please let me know. I look forward to hearing your suggestions.
    Thanks,
    Eric Butow

    Hi,
I am having the same issue and cannot figure out what is causing it, as it occurs randomly - but fairly frequently  - when I publish to mp4. And it is not tied to the project - seems to be something happening during the publishing. The issue might occur one time when pubishing a project and if republished again it may or may not occur again. I would be very interested in finding exactly what is causing this and any step that are tested and proven for getting away from the problem.

  • Any stuttering problems in FCE like there is in iMovie6?

There are several people experiencing severe stuttering problem in iMovie HD 6.x -- jerky video and stuttering audio during playback in iMovie. It's so bad, that it makes editing impossible. (See the iMovie HD forum and a topic heading called "Lousy iMovie HD ....."). This has nothing to do with HD video, but seems to be triggered by too many extracted audio clips in the edited movie. There may be other triggers that may cause the stuttering.
As a result, I think some of us are glancing towards FCE for salvation. For many amateurs, FCE may be overkill, but it's very frustrating not knowing when (or if) Apple will fix this problem. They've been informed of it through feedback.
Are any FCE users experiencing similar stuttering problems?_____
(I've seen a couple of instances -- of jerky motion -- in this forum, but those problems seemed to have been resolved).
I'm also concerned by a comment made within this FCE forum about common problems importing iMovie projects into FCE. Is this really a problem?____

I don't think anyone can give a definitive answer to using iMovie projects in FCE.
Some people may get away with it but to use it on a regular basis would be tempting fate.
So the answer to this question is a rather unsatisfactory "yes and no".
Regarding stuttering in FCE - this is not a common problem and I suspect that whenever it occurs it is down to user-error - either doing something wrong or using unsuitable equipment.
I am assuming that your references to stuttering are NOT due to interlacing problems. If they are , FCE has several quite efficient Deinterlace and Flicker Filters.

"Director,Finance - NAR"   wil not be split into two words.

    Hi Madhuri,
Best way to avoid such problem is to use TAB delimited file instead of comma separated data. Generally TAB does not appear in data.
If you are generating the file, use tab instead of comma.
If you cannot modify the format of file and data length in file is fixed character, you will need to define the structure and then move data in fixed length structure.

  • PDF and Preview related problems

    Hi:
A user in our office (MacBook Pro, v10.5.6) is having difficulty viewing and creating PDF files. To wit:
--Opening a PDF file results in a morass of symbols throughout.
--Opening a PDF file may show exclamation points substituted for tab characters.
Some other files appear to be just fine using Preview, and occasionally the latter of the two above will open and appear to be just fine and dandy. The files appear to be just fine on another Mac.
The two files appear correctly when viewed with Adobe Reader 9.0.
    Also:
--Creating a PDF file may result in exclamation points substituted for tab characters.
I tried a full system software archive and install...no luck.
I tried deleting the Adobe Reader and Preview preferences files...no luck.
I dragged and dropped a copy of Preview (v4.1) from my computer to hers...no luck.
I created a Second User, and the previously mangled PDF files open and appear to be just fine. I can also create PDF files that are true to their source document (no exclamation points for tab characters). I did only limited testing of this; however I did use the files above and created a new PDF file using the original source document. No problems.
I don't believe this is a missing font problem.
So that makes me think there's something wrong in the user's home directory with Preview and the PDF creation process. Some preference file or something.
Before I go ahead and move my data over to a new home directory...
    1. Has anyone seen this before?
    2. Has anyone fixed this before?
    3. How do I know which files to move to the new home directory and which (corrupted ones) to leave behind..if that indeed is the fix?
    4. How do I know that the creation problem doesn't extend beyond this user, and that I wasn't just lucky when Second User's PDF-created file was fine?
    TIA,
    mm

You need to resolve the conflict/corruption in the original account. This can be a laborious process, but is guaranteed to resolve the problem. While logged into the newly created account (if it's an admin account; otherwise create a new one), backup the bad account's folder (to another volume, partition, or disk), delete the bad account, selecting the save data option (which is stored in /Users/Deleted Users/ as a disk image), recreate the bad account using the same username/password combo, log out and back into the recreated original account. Run Preview and, If the problem's solved (which it should be), open the saved data dmg file in /Users/Deleted Users/, open the /Library/Preferences/ folder from the saved data, open the current /Users/restored account/Library/Preferences/ folder, and slowly copy plist files from the saved data folder to the current one that don't exist in it, keeping track of what you're moving to the new account so you can remove them if you encounter problems in the next step. Log out and back in to ensure there's no conflict and things still work correctly. Good luck.

  • Preview color problem in Bridge CS 5.5

I'm having the following problem with the thumbnails and previews in Bridge CS 5.5.
After I've scanned an image, the preview matches the colors I expect, with nice saturated colors.
After opening the image in Raw and making a few changes such as crop I press done and return to Bridge.
The preview I get is much less saturated then it was before.
When I reopen the image with Raw it first appears less saturated but shortly after, the saturated color returns.
Saving the image as a Jpeg gives the correct, saturated colors.
This problem first occurred after registering the product and receiving an update for Raw.
Extra info: I'm working with Nikon .nef files. Converting them to Adobe .dng format solves the problem.
    Message was edited by: Hazelnoot

You must have done a screen shot of the thumbnail as the enlarged version is same size.  But can still see difference.
I would revisit your thumbnail setting and make sure it is HQ Iif you want to see edits in thumbs, and  check the default ACR setting.  Don't assume they are the same as computer can do unexpected things.
Read the link I gave in post #1 as see if you have all the correct options selected.
When you click on thumb does the preveiw panel show the same dull image or a correct one?
It is possible the update fouled everything up, but seems like there would be more complaints.  I am still on ACR 6.4 however.  Am a slow adopter.

  • After latest CC update in April 2014: Premiere (7.2.2) and After Effects (12.2.1.5) preview / render problems

I have both Pr and Ae previews/playback set to go through a canopus advc-100 feeding external ntsc monitors. After most recent CC update, AE no longer playbacks ram previews through the external monitor and often crashes. Premiere previews and renders only audio with video freezing on first frame in program playback and no playback on external monitors as well as no playhead movement on the timeline. Output-ed mp4 files playback fine with VLC or WMP. When I disable playback through the canopus, all problems go away. I would like to get my playback returned to my external monitors asap. I have completely wiped drives, reinstalled software, upgraded components, all with no luck. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. As a work around, I want to rollback the recent update to Pr 7.2.1 and Ae 12.2.1 to get back in working order until I am confident that Pr 7.2.2 and Ae 12.2.1.5 can once again output through my canopus.
Running a Dell XPS420 with 8gb RAM; Quadro 2000D. outputing to canopus with texas instruments 1394 OHCI controller.

  • Previewing HD problem.

I cant watch HD videos like 1080p trailer i downloaded through. frames keeps drops , infact almost not moving, even sound is droping. i have 5g of ram and my graphic card is GeForce 7800 GT. even i feel motion 3 is slow just preview not even rendering. i thought upgrading my graphic card might solve the problem. so what you think? i am thinking of GeForce 8800 GTX i heard its good one. but will it work on my Quad G5 or not and will it solve the problem.
    thanks for your help.

    Hi-
The Geforce 8800 won't work in your G5. Only for the MacPro machine. The only other option you have for graphics is the X1900XT, which is roughly the same performance as the 7800 GT.
What is your hard drive condition? One or two? How full?

    Hi,
you'll need at least XP Professional, as XP Home does not allow for different user groups than the predefined, and the installer creates additional groups, or fails, in case of XP Home

  • In Preview Permission problem

I've been using Preview in the past with no problem. I am the only user on this computer.
When I double click a picture and it open in Preview, I make changes and try to save--It says I don't have permission to do this!!
First I repaired permissions on the HD
    Did not help
I right clicked on a picture went to Get Indo and changed the permission to Read & Write.
Did not see away to save so closed it. (I did unlock at the beginning)
    Anyone help please.
    Larry B

Is this one picture or all pictures? If the picture is in your home/user folders, see below.
You may need to rebuild permissions on your user account. To do this, boot to your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting) and open Terminal from the Utilities menu. In Terminal, type:  ‘resetpassword’ (without the ’s), hit return, and select the admin user. You are not going to reset your password. Click on the icon for your Macs hard drive at the top. From the drop down below it select the user account which is having issues. At the bottom of the window, you'll see an area labeled Restore Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the reset button there. The process takes a few minutes. When complete, restart.

  • Selecting Multiple Objects with Output Preview Causing Problems

I'm trying to edit a PDF and need to select multiple objects. Without Output Preview open, I can easily select all the items I need using the shift key. With Output Preview open, whenever I try to select the second object, Output Preview creates a sticky note, instead of selecting the second object.
I am also using the PitStop Pro plug-in.
Any idea how to correct this problem? Thanks!

Unfortunately it seems that the new sticky note feature with the output preview in Acrobat XI uses the same keyboard shortcut as multiple selection tool in Pitstop (shift).
Closing the output preview is the easiest way to get around this issue.
We could consider changing the key for multiple selection in PitStop, but 'shift' is pretty much a default, so what could we change it too?
If anyone has any thoughts could they email me, I am the product manager responsible for Pitstop at Enfocus and my email is '[email protected]'
    All feedback gratefully received.
