AW6 on a G3/B&W/350 OS9.2.2

After I use AW6 I always get three "dummy" files in a rescued items folder in the trash after reboot (DummyWP.cwk, DummySS.cwk, DummySS.cwk
Is there a way to prevent this?

They are temp files that are supposed to be auto-deleted but sometimes aren't. You probably could write an AppleScript, but you'd have to find out where they are before they show up in the Trash. You might be able to find a script to empty the Trash with a Google search. I'd set it to run at start up rather than shut down.

  • Networking between iMac 350 OS9 & G3 450 OSX?

    Hello,
I recently acquired a used iMac 350mhz 7gb 128mb which currently has OS9.2, I've just tried networking between the iMac and my G3 450mhz which is running OSX tiger, not working.
Q- Can I upgrade the iMac to OSX tiger? If so how? I'm sure then my router will acknowledge the iMac.
    Thanks.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Officially the iMac 350MHz will only support OS X up to 10.3.9. The iMac 350MHz only has a CD-ROM drive and as Tiger comes on DVD by default this is another hurdle. Panther comes on CD.
Before you install any version of OS X it is vital to update the firmware: 4.1.9 (link).
128Mb is the bare minimum for OS X and really needs more. Sticking a 512Mb DIMM with one of the 64Mb ones would be ample.
7Gb is not a large drive for Panther so you'd want to de-select the 'Languages' and 'Printer Drivers' options during the install to save a little more space.
Subsequent networking would be far far simpler.
    regards

  • Deleted photos

After downloading photos from my camera to iPhoto I go through them and move them to their proper albums.
After that when I delete them from the "last roll" they are also deleted from the albums to which I moved them.
    Thanks.

Yes, this is correct. Delete from a roll, and you delete from your library...gone forever. Delete from an album, and it remains in your library. Except that deleting from a Smart Album also deletes from your library.
Solution - don't delete from Last Roll.

  • Expose "all windows" Annoying problem

I spent an hour and could not find another post on this problem. I am running the latest version of tiger and I have an imac g5 pre intel. I love expose and have a different command in all four corners. My problem is that the "all windows" feature continues to pop up when I don't ask for it. It usually happens when I have a few things going on but it should not happen unless I put my mouse in the corner that I specify. I am not even coming close to that corner and it just pops up all of the time and is probably one of the most annoying things I have encountered on a computer. Once it gets started it seems to pick up steam and do it even more. If anybody has some advice I would really appreciate it.
    Thanks

I had this problem right after I bought this machine. Apple replaced the mouse - same thing. It seemed to be fixed for a while - by a system update?, but has recently reoccured. Unplugging and reconnecting the mouse USB from the keyboard will work for a while. So will disabling the expose option in the mouse preferences but, no expose, it doesn't fix the bug. In my case it seems to happen at the end of the day after the computer has been running for hours(?).
This appears to me to be a software problem that Apple has yet to address.

  • Aironet 350 in Mac OS9: 128-bit WEP possible?

Aftermarket-like, I have acquired a lovely Aironet PCM-352 card complete with the drivers on CD. I installed them with apparent success on my PowerBook G3 which runs OS 9 (OS X no-go due to FireWire issues), but it doesn't allow more than 16 hex digits for the WEP key (40bits). 128 bit is what I need. Cisco.com won't let me download new drivers, apparently since I don't have a TAC contract. Surely there are wiser places than here to post these questions, but:
    - Is it possible, with newer drivers, to do 128-bit WEP keys with this model of Aironet card?
    - Where to get those drivers, absent spending a grillion dollars for an otherwise useless tech support contract?

PCMCIA adapter firmware version is V4.25.30 which supports 128 bit encrytpion.

  • Partition external hard drive and install OS9

I have a Lacie external hard drive, 350 GB, and would like to partition it and install OS9 in one of the partitions so that I can run some of the applications I have that won't run in OSX. What do I need to do. How much space should I partition the volumes into, and how many. Do the applications need to be in the same volume as OS9. I also want a volume for backup using "Time Machine" of OSx (leopard) which is in my internal drive in my iMac G5 with 80 GB., and another for backup of files that are in my internal hard drive.

    Hi, falcontech -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions -
    Bad news, perhaps.
Your G5 is not OS 9 bootable; no G5 is.
In addition, Leopard (OSX 10.5) does not support Classic (OS 9 used as a program while the machine is booted to OSX).
In order to make use of OS 9 as Classic, you would need to also install a bootable version of OSX 10.4 (Tiger) or 10.3 (Panther), boot the machine to that and then use Classic. Depending on which model it is, your iMac G5 model originally came with a version of either OSX 10.3 or OSX 10.4; its original disk set also can install Classic.
As far as partition sizes go, I would allow at least 20GB for the OSX/Classic partition. Although Classic (OS 9) is not fussy about whether its programs are on the same volume as OS 9 is, it would make little sense to have them elsewhere. Among other things, having the OS 9 programs on the same volume as OS 9 would make responses a bit faster since seeking would be restricted to just one volume.
As far as the remainder goes, your needs would best determine the partition sizes.

  • Mac-mini, Tiger, and OS9

I currently am running a G3/350 (blue and white) and want to upgrade to a Mac Mini (this will be a secondary computer - main one is an iMac G5). The problem is that the Apple store says the new Mini's ship with Tiger only. I have some software that runs only on OS9 that can't be upgraded to OSX.
So, if I get the Mini, can I load OS9 from Panther undeneath Tiger and continue running my exisitng software?

Personally, I have never encountered a machine specific copy of OS X.
The new line of iBook G4s are shipping with a machine-specific version of Mac OS X 10.4.2 (build 8D37). Another copy of Mac OS X 10.4.2 (the retail version is build 8C46) from any other computer will not boot them.
New (legal) copies of OS 9 can still be had all over the web.
Why would anyone need to get another copy of Mac OS 9 besides the copy that came with their computer? Every computer that Apple makes is still shipping with a copy of Mac OS 9. I suppose, if you've lost your original install disk(s), then you might need to do a search. AppleCare Support can get you a replacement set. If your Mac is out of warranty, you may be charged though.
If your computer shipped with a copy of Mac OS X up to version 10.1.5, your computer would have come with a separate Mac OS 9 install CD. These installs are almost all machine-specific.
If your computer shipped with Mac OS X 10.2 or later, you will have to install Mac OS 9 for "Classic" support from your install/restore disks whether or nor you computer can actually boot into OS 9.
The Mac mini and all the other Macs currently being shipped do not come with Mac OS 9 for Classic support installed by default. However, you can install it from your install/restore DVD.

  • Problem with ibook g3 OS9 showing in a small 640x480 window

Using a quantity of G3 ibooks in a school with OS9, the problem of a small OS9 window drove me crazy until, out of frustration, I tried installing an OS9 eMac disc, and the problem was solved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! there are a few eMac OS9 installer discs available on ebay. Hope this works for others...

The best bet is to use the discs that originally came with the exact iBook model you're using.
I got this same problem when I installed a version of Mac OS 9 that came with an iMac G3 350 MHz on my iMac G3 500 MHz.

  • I have a digital performer file created on os9 that wont open in OSX the file looks like a unix file.

Is there a way to convert old os9 files so OSX can use them? The only apps that will open it is Text edit and Terminal.
    jimi

Many document types created in OS 9 apps are openeable in OS X, depending on the OS X version.
For example, AppleWorks 6 documents are usable directly in OS X by using the OS X version of AppleWorks 6 (runs in all versions of OS X except Lion). In addition, AW6 text docs and spreadsheet docs can be opened in Pages and Numbers, respectively, in all versions of OS X.
Image files from OS 9 (jpeg, tiff, etc.) are openable by most image-capable apps in OS X.
As for a Digital Performer file, its format is probably proprietary; if that's the case, you'll need to acquire the OS X version of that app in order to open/use it in OS X.
If it's the program itself you talking about, rather than a document created by it -
No OS 9 app can be used directly in OS X, and such an app will often be reported by OS X as being a Unix executable.
In some versions of OS X (OS X 10.4 and earlier) OS 9 (9.1 minimum, 9.2.x is best) can be used as Classic in order to provide an environment in which many (but not all) OS 9 programs can be used. OS X 10.5 and later do not support Classic.

  • Trimming OS9 to minimum and still run Classic + 10.3.9?

    Hello all,
I've read many topics concerning deleting OS9 completely but have had difficulty finding info concerning what actually can be deleted from the OS9 system folder and OS9 applications folder and still be able to run Classic. I have an older version of Adobe Photoshop that I need to run (5.0) and a few games still that I wish to be able to run.
What exactly can be deleted and still safely run Classic?
I know that OS9 takes up a small amount of space but running 10.3.9 on my old iMac G3 350 with only a 7GB HD is at the minimum so I thought trimming OS9 might help some. Or should I just leave well enough alone?
Any thoughts and tips very much appreciated,

  • IMac 350 OS upgrade

    Greetings:
A member of our Mac club has a iMac G3 350 500+Mhz ram, I forget HD size, and would like to upgrade to Panther. Is it possible and feasible? Pros and Cons if available.
    John

    Hi John,
Upgrading the machine to Panther is possible, though perhaps not ideal as Kappy has pointed out...but....I have had a relatively good experience running Panther on the same machine.
My only thought that might help additionally is that Panther retail install disks can be purchase rather inexpensively, perhaps $30-$50 for a retail boxed set on ebay, so it certainly might be worth the upgrade if the user cannot afford to purchase a new computer.
Our installed RAM is somewhat similar though mine is 640MB I would assume it would run similar with those amounts though they could upgrade that too for probably not much more but I am not sure it would be necessary unless they intend to use the machine for very cpu intensive applications.
The machine's HD size is 7GB which is the bare minimum for installing Panther.
Most important, if the machine is running OS9 at the moment they will need to update to at least 9.1 or preferably 9.2 and then apply the iMac (Slot Loading) iMac Firmware Update 4.1.9 before upgrading to OSX 10.3. Once you have the retail 10.3 installation completed and you are connected to the internet you can use Software Updater to apply the Mac OS X Combined Update 10.3.9.
One thing I have had to do of late to use 10.3.9 is to update the browser to Camino 1.6.1 which is still being supported by its developer Mozilla. Safari, 1.3.2 still functions fairly well on 10.3.9 but is not supported by sites such as Google Maps and a few others which is why you might wish to use Camino. Camino can be customized to feel and look very similar to Safari.
Post back if you have any further questions or comments,
    littleshoulders
edit: I just realized that you only stated that it is a 350Mhz iMac so there are a couple of considerations that you would have to take into account. There is a 350Mhz Blueberry model that is only a 6Gb HD as opposed to the iMac indigo model that came with a 7Gb HD. My post above relates to the 350 indigo model. Checking everymac.com may prove very helpful in detemining specs for your model.

  • I've wiped hard drive and need to start in OS9: Disk Install won't let me

I've just erased my hard drive according to the instructions at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=152060
Now I'm looking at Choose Startup Disk and the option is Network Startup and Mac OSX 10/3/5 from the install disc.
I want the iMac to run on OS9 and I have the original Software Install and Software Restore disks. What do I do now

Towards the end of the OS9 install I get "An error has stopped the installation process. Some software has not been installed. What do you want to do?
Try to install Mac OS Runtime for Java again
Skip installing Mac OS Runtime for Java
    Stop the entire installation process"

  • Fastest possible disk access in os9

    hi there
as the topic says im interested in achieving the best possible disk speeds in os9 for use with old media programs.
i have resurrected an old g4 450mhz sawtooth that im using to run some old music production programs
im pretty sure that the disk speed is the biggest bottleneck on this machine.
Ive been looking into the following ACARD devices ive provided links to newegg
simple for the images + reference

    features booting into os9
my question is can anyone reccomend to me any other cards that i might find cheaply + available
    that provide the following criteria:
    a) bootable into os9
    b) supporting SATA hard drive (so i can buy new hard drives in the future IDE are no longer available for purchase at my local shop)
    c) hardware raid
    d) supporting HFS volume visible to both os9 + osx
    e) hardware raid dip-switchable from RAID0/RAID1 (RAID0+1 would be the ultimate)
    f) PCI interface and compatible with all G3/G4 and also pci/pci-x based G5's
the 6890M seems like the perfect option for me but i have found that these items are now unavailable + sold out.
is there any other product that i can try to find under a diferent brand name ? i have read that acard did cards for sonnet/miglia/SIIG
that were rebranded... Im hoping someones already done their homework on all this stuff and can point me in the rigth direction
so i can get to using my programs + os to do what i love to do and stop worrying about technical headaches..
again obv this isnt my only computer but i like to use os9 for some programs + also its unique GUI environment!
    fingers crossed

    @brody
i actually own one i have it on the desk sitting next to me right now. its a silicon images controller with custom firmware to provide the mac compatibility... works great... but only provides 2x sata150 ports.. which is great in and of itself.. but doesnt provide raid to os9.. doesnt alllow you to combine the speed of two drives together undre os9... to achieve a speed comparible of sata II (sata2 or sata300)
    @jon
yes i imagined that card would be the best bang for buck but again that card provides the ports for ide drives and doesnt provide the combination of more then one drive unless u were to use it under osx.. and then u could acheive this with softare raid from disk utility but wouldnt allow me to use two drives as one volume under os9
ive actually been in touch with acard and they said they are out of stock completely on the AEC-6890M which is the card that provides RAID with 2x Sata drives for os9. im looking for a similar product to this.. that has the raid controlled by the card and not the OS.. configurable between RAID0, RAID1 and possibly even RAID0+1(which would require 4 drives tho, instead of just 2)
ive just got a response back from a calssified ad i posted to but had almost given up on after not receiving a response. the guy was on vacation;) anyways hes got a AEC-6880M which is the raid capable IDE Card.. for a good price.. the only problem is.. the availability of IDE hard drives.. they are all dying and i dont think they are making IDE ATA133 drives anymore.. ? does anyone know?

  • Stumped!!! How do I install OS9 on a G4 QS 2002 with SCSI???

OK, this has got me beat! and I've been working with all manner of macs for 20 years! My experience of post-ADB, post-Serial Port, post-SCSI II, 'modern' macs of the 21st century is limited to powerbooks though [blush]
So, here's the quandary; In an earlier post I described how I'd purchased a G4 Dual 1Ghz Quicksilver 2002 with a Build-to-Order Apple SCSI option in order to run my Digidesign pro Tools gear in MacOS 9.2.2. Well, the boot drive is a 72GB Seagate Cheater attached to the factory installed UL3D ATTO card. I've installed OS X 10.4.4 successfully, but try as I might I cannot for the life of me figure out how I'm supposed to install OS9. When I insert the install CD and click on the installer it wants to load Classic, but doesn't find it! Duh! So no problem I think, I set the CD as my start-up volume and restart. This time I'm greeted by the OS9 desktop, but no bootup drive to install OS9 onto! Drive Setup can see the device, but says it cannot be mounted. Does is require ATTO drivers? That's crazy, I thought OS9 was built on SCSI. I can't find ATTO drivers online, or figure how I would install them before installing an OS.
So next problem, I restart and hold down Option, but the USB Apple keyboard doesn't seem to like key combinations because about 20 times in a row I keep rebooting back to the CD drive. My old ADB keyboard was never this unresponsive. Furthermore, how on earth do you force the CD to eject of these button-less towers? I finally managed it by holding the mouse down, but that only works in certain circumstances.
OK, so I figure I need to drag and drop an entire OS9 System Folder from my other G4 QS via an external drive over USB. That was successful, and now Startup Disk in the system sees an OS9 startup option as well as an OSX on the SCSI boot drive. so I figure I'm in business and select OS9 and restart. Now I'm in a whole world of pain! I'm greeted with the flashing '?' icon at boot up because clearly it cannot find the system. Well, you'd think that after a while it would just give up and start from OSX which is obviously sitting there waiting. Well NO! It just flashes forever. No amount of reboots will get it off this. I tried all sort of key combinations, but they don't seem to work, until cmd-x seemed to do it. However a couple of hours were wasted. It's also annoying not having a good old-fashioned restart button on my keyboard.
So anyway, how did Apple expect me to install OS 9 on this if their own installer CD doesn't even see their factory installed boot drive?

Well, I can confirm that that worked, however it was not as intuitive as it should have been, and can easily be overlooked.
Basically when you install Tiger and click on the Options box it allows you perform a 'Clean Install', and 'Erase Disk' etc where you are given only one option for formatting: Unix or HFS+ Journaling. At no point does it present you with an option to install OS9 drivers, and neither does it install them by default!
In order to install the OS9 compatibility you have to dismiss the OSX 10.4 installer script and open Disk Utility from the Utilities menu where you can perform the exact same task, but this time with an additional check box to install OS9 drivers! And irony or ironies, this time it's pre-selected by default! Talk about convoluted and counter-intuitive...
Anyway, thanks for the help Tom. That saved me another couple of nights

  • Highlighting Text Freezes OS9

When I highlight text in Quark or Simple Text in OS9, many times before I get to the end of the line, the computer freezes. Both Quark and Simple Text have been assigned much more memory than they need. I've run the system thru Disk Doctor and rebuilt the desktop and it still freezes when I highlight. Any suggestions?
    Thanks from Gina

Have you tried starting up with just the apple basic extensions? To see if there could be an extension conflict.
The only other thing that I could think of is it always the same font? Does it do it with other fonts? Possibly a corrupted font.
I am not familiar with this problem, but that would be a couple of ways to trouble shoot.
