Awful lot of Kernel Panics after 10.5.2 Update
I have been getting an awful lot of kernel panics on my macbook when doing intensive stuff. It seems to have started after the 10.5.2 update. It usually happens when importing photos into iPhoto, playing BASIC, (i mean really basic, like iSpy) Games, working in iMovie, or scrolling through photos in full screen. What could be causing this? It seems like a few seconds before it panics stuff slows down, becomes laggy, and CPU usage goes to around 60%. Temp is between 130* and 160*F. I do not think it is normal for the 'puter to panic when it slows down, but I may be wrong. I am having around 2-3 per week. Any help will be appreciated and awarded points.
Thanks,
KANE
That's a really nice list.
Sounds like something is screwing around with memory and that's causing the panic. See what's running. Though modern memory management is much better, there are still problems when programs hold memory, don't release memory, try to claim unavailable memory, etc.

Kernel panic after 10.5.6 update
Hi all,
A few hours after updating to Mac OS X 10.5.6 yesterday, I got a kernel panic (trace below). If I recall correctly, only Mail and Safari were open at the time.
This is my 2nd kernel panic in the one month since own a new Macbook. What worries me is that the report links the panic to the CPU Powermanagement driver. Is there any way to check this or other likely causes?
Thanks in advance, regards,
Toon

Kernel Panic after 10.6.8 update and iHome KeyBoard
I have the iHome Wireless keyboard and mouse ( IH-K241LS-K). I updated my iMac to the newest system software 10.6.8. After restart, I received a kernel panic on my Mac. Unplugged the keyboard's USB "fob" on my Mac, restarted and no problem. Plug the keyboard's USB "fob" back in and get the same kernel panic. Sent a support request to iHome today also.
Back to my Apple wired keyboard for now. Any thoughts on how to resolve this issue?
Thank you! Before throwing money at the problem, consider this...
Also there is software called Hands Off causing similar commotion, so if this is installed you may wish to uninstall and update to a higher version of the program if you cannot get it to update otherwise. I believe iHome will get a working driver out soon as possible so am going to hold out on v10.6.7 until they do. I don't care for discomfort of typing on any laptop either due to head/neck injury, but mine is a 13" Air. Laptops aren't known for good ergonomics...lol Have mine hooked up to a 32" LCD TV with the lappy on the bedstand pull out board and iHome mouse and keyboard handy in a Belkin computer caddy nearby. When my laptop isn't mobile it's my too tired to get out of bed machine. ;-D -
Kernel Panic after 10.4.8 update
Used Software Update to update all the new software today. I had to leave the house before the OS X install finished so I pluged the computer in and left.
When I retunred I see an error telling me the installation failed and the package has been moved to the trash. The message also advises me to try running the package again from the Finder. Well I check out my trash can and I can't see a package.
At this point I should mention that my wireless network failed at some point so I don't know if that effected the download or not.
Software Update has a red exclaimation point next to OS X update and advises me to restart. So I restart. Kernel Panic. Multiple restarts later and I'm still getting the panic. Holding shift key down does not boot the Mac. I have been able to boot up with the install disk. I ran repair on the hard drive and no errors were found. I did not try repairing permissions. (Stupid, I know.) So, I am currently reinstalling OS X. (And I forgot to tell it to skip the friggin printer drivers...). I don't have access to another Mac nor a firewire drive to do a mirror boot.
Any help?I had the same problem. Repairing permissions, verifying the disk, safe mode boot, shift key down all failed to solve it.
So I reinstalled 10.4 from install disc that came with the Mac (archive and install while preserving users and netowrk info). Then downloaded (via software update; Update > Download Only) the 10.4.8 combo update for Intel and installed it.
iMac rebooted fine.
I applied all other updates via Software Update and things seem ok.
Hope this helps.

Kernel Panic after 10.4.6 Update
Hi all - my Mini was running great on 10.4.5, installed 10.4.6 per Software Update, got the double reboot per messages and article. On second reboot and since, I now get kernel panics (you need to press the power button in several languages) on boot with or without shift key down.
Any thoughts? Fatuous comments about reverting to my non-existent backup will be given the contempt they deserve. I will take care of giving myself the contempt I deserve for not having a backup.
I am willing to bet it's the Double Command kext I have installed. Is there a way to kill that file from a boot CD?
Much love to the Mac faithful from this PC-based dabbler...
---- Andrew
Mac Mini G4 Mac OS X (10.4.5) 1GB RAMI've had kernel panics on a 350MHz Power Mac G4 under 10.4.6. I get the same "You must reboot your computer" (in multiple languages) screen. A reboot only yeilds kernel panics. So for the time being, it has rendered the system unusable! I do not use "Double Command" (referred to in this thread), and haven't installed any such software...
In restoring from a backup, I am able to get the system back to 10.4.5, but with some inconvenience. The same thing happened with the 10.4.3 Update on this Power Mac G4 350Mhz system. I have a newer Mac Mini that is running 10.4.6 with no problems at home. Is Apple leaving its older systems behind (i.e. G3, G4), while still advertising compatibility for these older products?
Doesn't Apple need to include a function for backing out of Software Updates (whether through software update or through a standalone installation file downloaded from their web site) in to the operating system, in order to remain competitive in the marketplace? -
Kernel panics after 10.6.8 update
I installed 10.6.8 via software update on my MBP 17 2.6Ghz (2008? The model before unibody) and now I get kernel panic any time I plug in a mouse (wired or wireless) in the usb port or try and use a BT mouse.
It appears to only be a problem with mice as I can plugin and use an external usb hard drive for time machine.
Ideas anyone? I am at a loss and cannot do my work without a mouse.

Kernel panic after 10.5.8 Update
Hi,
I have the black intel Macbook which was bought slightly over a year ago. A few days ago I was prompted to do the 10.5.8 update. Software Update was doing its work and I left it running with the Macbook plugged in. About an hour later, I checked and it stated that the update failed and I have to restart. I restarted and was presented with a kernel panic and a message to restart. Restarting brings me back to the same kernel panic and restart message.
These are things that I have tried:
1) Reset PRAM.
2) Used Disk Utility off the install disk - I did a Disk Repair. It failed but gave me an option to Verify Disk. I verified the disk (by this time Repair Disk is greyed out) and got the "invalid node structure" and "Volume check failed" messages. Verified a few times and this is all I got. I tried to reinstall the OS but the installer does not see the hard disk.
3) Cmd-S for single user mode not accessible. So I can't run fcsk.
4) Tried to boot Disk Warrior CD but it went into a booting loop (chime-blue screen-blank screen-chime).
5) Used my iBook G4 800 (also running Leopard) as host with the Macbook as the firewire target. The Macbook harddisk did not mount. Disk Utility can see the harddisk but cannot access it.
6) Used Disk Warrior from the iBook through firewire target mode. Disk Warrior came back with "Directory cannot be rebuilt due to disk hardware failure (-36, 2268)".
7) Used Disk Utility off the install disk again - at first it shows SMART was ok, the number of files on the harddisk and how much space is used. Once I did a Verify Disk (the only option available), I get the "invalid node structure" error and the status on SMART, number of files and space went blank.
8) I ran Apple Hardware Test and it says everything is ok but it didn't show that a test was performed on the hard disk.
The biggest problem I have here is that I need files from that harddisk. I have no backup of those files. No Time Machine or any other form of backup. Anybody has any idea for me to try before I send it to the Apple Store people?
Thanks in advance.Hi--
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Sorry to hear about your troubles.
3) Cmd-S for single user mode not accessible. So I can't run fcsk.
Do you get any error messages when you try to boot to single user mode? What happens if you just try to boot into with the verbose option (cmd-V)? Does that give you any text on the screen?
4) Tried to boot Disk Warrior CD but it went into a booting loop (chime-blue screen-blank screen-chime).
Look closely at your DiskWarrior CD and make sure it's capable of booting your Macbook. If you've had the CD, it may be too old to boot your Macbook. Check at DiskWarrior's web site (Alsoft is the company name). They used to have a pretty good listing of what version of the DW CD will boot what computer.
Steps 5,6, and 7 make me suspect a hardware failure of some kind, not just a bad upgrade.
8) I ran Apple Hardware Test and it says everything is ok but it didn't show that a test was performed on the hard disk.
The Apple Hardware Test doesn't do extensive disk testing. I suspect it just checks the controller to see if the disk is there is about all. I'm pretty sure MicroMat's TechTool Pro will perform more extensive scans on hard drives, including a surface scan. But I don't think you should do any surface scans until you get files off the drive: if you have bad blocks, a surface scan could just spread the problem across more blocks.
The biggest problem I have here is that I need files from that harddisk. I have no backup of those files. No Time Machine or any other form of backup.
In the past I had good luck with Data Rescue on an iMac whose drive failed with symptoms similar to yours:
http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
It was able to get all of the files I wanted off the drive before they swapped it out (there were a whole section that couldn't be rescued, but luckily they were audio loops installed from a DVD, so they could be restored easily enough). It didn't seem to matter that the partition wouldn't mount, either. They have a demo you can download that will tell you if it can recover any files before you pay for it.
As for backing up, trust me, there's no better feeling than being able to tell the Apple Genius that it doesn't matter what they do, you can just restore from a backup.

Kernel Panic after 10.5.7 update--can't reboot.
Hi,
I updated to 10.5.7 the other day. Since then, I had 3 Kernel Panics that were recovered from. However, now I can no longer boot from the internal drive, an external drive or the Leopard install DVD since a Kernel Panic that happened while emptying the trash. My computer begins to boot up as I see the gray screen, but part way through the process, I get the Kernel Panic screen. Resetting the SMC/PRAM and NVRAM, disconnecting devices, unplugging the computer for awhile and re-seated the RAM didn't help. I'm not sure what to do next. Thanks in advance for your help. You probably had some issues with your system before the update and did not know it. Updates have a way of bringing these things out.
Here's the most used site for Resolving Kernel Panics. Please do all the steps in order, even if you don't think you need to do a certain step.
Here's a great MacFixIt article.

Kernel panics after install of Security Update 2006-007
I also installed the security update, had a kernel panic when the install was 60% through the optimization. Tried to reboot and now only get the Apple logo screen which then goes to the following command lines:
init: can't exec /bin/sh for single user: Exec format error
init: can't exec /bin/sh for singer user: Exec format error
init: can't exec /bin/sh for /etc/rc: Exec format error
I booted from the OSX 10.3 disk, ran disk repair which found no problems. Tried repair disk permissions which hung up 1/3 the way through saying "Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue."
I tried to reinstall 10.3 but get the message I cannot install on my hard drive since it says it could not find an earlier version of OS X (I had since updated to 10.3.9). I have about 3 months of photos in iPhoto I haven't backed up (my bad)and would rather not reformat and reinstall the entire operating system. Any suggestions? Thanks
G5, 1.8 GHz Mac OS X (10.3.9)
G5 Mac OS X (10.3.9)Hi Larry
First off, Dr. Smoke has some good advice regarding kernel panics here:
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
but It could be that your system is screwed at a fundamental level. If you can't do an archive and install from your system CD, then your HD may need formatting as a last resort. Do you have 2 macs, or a mate with a mac book? If so, you can connect them up using a firewire cable, and start you mac holding down the 'T' key to restart your mac in target disk mode. You'll see the firewire icon on your screen when it starts, and the other mac will get your HD pop up on it's desktop.
This gives you the ability to remove the data files you need (like all your photos) BEFORE formatting your HD.

Unfortunately not good at reading panic logs, see if anything at http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html is helpful.

Kernel panics after upgrading to OS 10.8.5
I installed the 10.8.5 update on my early 20098 model Mac Pro. I thought it strange that I had to restart the computer twice after the update. But everything initially seemed to work fine after the update. But while I was updating the OS on my Macbook Pro, leaving my Mac Pro unattended for about 45 minutes, I came back to the Mac Pro and discovered that there was a kernal panic warning on the screen to the effect that the computer shut down because of a problem. I was given the option to restart the computer and it seemed to work normally for the next few hours. But when I checked on it the next morning, the same kernel panic message was displayed. I tried starting up in Safe Mode. As far as I can tell everything works well in safe mode, at least for the 3 or 4 hours I left it in that mode. Back in standard boot the kernel alerts started back again. This happens so far only when I am not actively using the computer but when it is left unattended. The computer is set to sleep after 1 hour.
An internet search suggested that there might be a conflict with a .kext file. There are only 5 .kext files loaded at startup that are non-Apple ones. I removed three of them since they were not critical for the use of my computer. But two of the .kext files are necessary for the proper function of the Mac Pro as it is configured. There is an "Accelsior.kext" file that is required for my OWC Mercury Accelsior PCI Express SSD card and two .kext files necessary for my CalDigit USB 3.0 Host Adapter (CalDigitFastIO.kext and CalDigitUSBxHCI.kext). Removing all but the CalDigit .kext files and the Accelsior file did not correct the problem. Next I simply re-installed the 10.8.5 updater. This did not correct the problem. I think I will go ahead and remove the CalDigit .kext files as a trial since I can operate the computer without USB 3.0 for a while. But beyond this I don't know what I should do next.
Here is a copy of the kernel report in Console that was generated with the last kernel panic:

Thanks for any input or help. Unless there is a simple fix I think I will have to revert back to my pre-update backup copy of 10.8.4
JohnGlenn,
Since you do not have the CalDigit USB 3 card installed and we have the exact same inducible kernel panics after update to 10.8.5, I think we can rule out a role for the CalDigit card in this matter. Apparently, according to Larry at OWC, he and other users are not experiencing problems with the Accelsior card after the update. This suggests it is not a universal problem but it affects only Mac Pros running certain software or hardware add-ons. It would be interesting to know in what other regards your system resembles mine in some unique fashion that might explain this problem.
You have the MacPro 5,1 while I have the MacPro 4,1 so we know that it is not isolated to just one model of the Mac Pro. I have 20GB RAM installed with a module in each of the slots. I have SuperDrives installed in both bays. I have all 4 internal HD bays occupied. The Rember app indicates that there are no problems with my RAM. I have multiple external FW HDs, a Zoom USB modem, and 2 monitors attached to the Mac. It is hard to imagine any of these features as being related to the problem at hand. I might try removing all attached devices to see if this makes a difference. Meanwhile I'll await a follow up report from OWC.

Kernel panic after 10.5.3 install - can't get to desktop
When 10.5.3 came out I ran Software Update, and it installed itself and then asked me to restart my system. So I did. But before my MBP finished restarting, a gray curtain came down and told me that I had to... restart... my... system. (It looked like a kernel panic screen.)
I restarted and the same thing happened. After a couple of iterations of this I realized that something was broken and it wasn't going to fix itself, so I booted up in Safe Mode. That worked OK. It's what I'm using right now. Things seem to work normally except that certain functions, like playing audio, are disabled.
How do I troubleshoot this? Thanks.OK, here's the panic log for the first kernel panic after the 10.5.3 download. Does this help?

Kernel Panics after Waking from Sleep
Hey everyone, having some problems with my iMac I'm hoping you could help with:
I'm running a 2o" G5 iMac 1.8 GHz, 1 GB RAM, with OS X 1o.4.7.
What is happening is that if I put my iMac to sleep, and then wake it after a few hours, I get Kernel Panics and have to restart 1-3 times(this has been going on for about a month). I'm also having programs unexpectedly close on me after being able to restart it(mainly Mail & iTunes). This doesn't happen if I only leave my iMac asleep for a 1-2 hours or so.
So I get 3 types of errors, the kernel panic with the different languages after waking the iMac. The kernel panic that displays white text on black bars running down the left side of my screen, after being able to reboot(randomly). And unexpected program shut downs, primarily when using Mail or iTunes.
What I've done:
-Reset the PRAM
-Removed all external hardware except mouse/keyboard.
-Ran the hardware disc check which determined I had a bad stick of RAM, so I removed it, and left the stick provided by Apple in.
-Deleted the plists Powermanagement & autoawake, deleted the cache files(per Apple support).
-Safe boot(still got the panics)
-Erase & Install after backing everything up.
When I re-tested using the clean boot for about a day, I didn't get the errors. However, when I reloaded my initial setup from by backup disk, I started getting the kernel panics after a few hours of sleep again.
I think the fact that I didn't get the panics running the clean boot has hopefully ruled out a hardware problem, so am I looking at some software that could be the culprit? Is there any easy way to narrow down what it might be, or if it's another issue altogether?
Thanks for any help provided, and let me know if I need to provide any further info!
20" iMac G5/15" PowerBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.7)Thanks for all the helpful ideas everyone(Miriam especially).
I tried logging in as another (new) user, and experienced the same problems. Nothing showing on the activity monitor that I can see as the problem either.
Looks like I'll be heading back down to the Apple store to see what can be done. I had taken it down before, but it was after I had done a clean install, and they couldn't recreate it after 1 hour of sleep, and I didn't want to pay $75 to keep it over night. But I have my crash logs now, and hopefully they'll be a little more receptive the second time around.
Thanks again!
