Awful troubles with fonts

http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/4900/wtfny8.png
Here's a screenshot of how my firefox (and most other programs, excluding terminals) look now. Text appear and hides again randomly
If I try to select some text - it becomes visible, it may stay visible some time after unselecting or may hide again. In QT apps there are no text in menus at all, but in GTK same fonts are visible, but they also may appear and disappear.
I did "pacman -Q | grep font" and reinstalled all packages listed - no matter. How can it be solved?  :?
Thanks...

Make sure you are running nvidia-legacy-1.0-7184 for xorg-7.1 support.  nvidias had a lot of issues with font rendering in xorg-7.1, and I'm not convinced they fixed it all.  If you are running 7184, try rolling back to xorg-7.0, that will probably fix it.

  • Troubles with fonts, graphics in firefox

I just rebooted my machine. I was trying to test a manually written grub.cfg with grub2. I screwed this up. Initially, I managed to get to a rescue shell by editing the kernel command line. I'm not sure what the correct term is - not the grub2 shell or rescue shell, I don't think, but ramfs with a sort of mini filesystem. Anyway, I replaced my backup grub.cfg and then found I didn't know how to reboot. I tried "reboot" but that did nothing and I guess there are no manuals in this shell. In experimenting, I managed to cause a kernel panic. (I think I accidentally killed init.) So I did a cold reboot. Everything now went smoothly, the system restored from the ext4 journal for the root filesystem and everything seems fine.
I am having a couple of problems. One very minor one is that Kile no longer seems to recognise .dat files as tex or latex source. I am sure I can fix this. I just mention it in case it is important to something else.
The bigger problem is that I'm seeing a lot of graphics corruption in Firefox. I've seen some of this before but it is now much worse. Also, before, it seemed tied to particular areas of a particular virtual desktop and nothing affected it. But this is tied to Firefox specifically and it changes all the time. I've never seen the location and search bar go through so many colour changes. If I reload the wiki pages, I may get ordinary coloured text or it may be rainbow coloured. I'm also getting fuzzy areas. I'm seeing a bit of this in KDE menus, too, but it seems much worse in Firefox.
More weirdly, fonts in Firefox are screwed up.
I'm not sure what font the wiki uses for ordinary text. It seems to be the same as on the forums and in this text box. In any case, all occurrences of 's' are replaced by squiggles. I am assuming my 's's will appear correctly to those reading this but in case I've mistyped or something, I am referring to the first letter of words such as 'school', 'schlep' and 'slippery slivers of silver sardines swimming surprisingly slowly'. This makes reading the wiki rather difficult. (There are a lot of 's's in it!) I was trying to find out how to reboot cleanly from the ramfs in case I end up there again.
EDIT: In Firefox, the 's' in 'fonts' in the post title (once posted) is fine. So is the 's' in 'Forums' at the top of the page. Below this text box, the 'S' in 'Smilies' is fine but the 's' is not. The 's' in 'Options' is also OK but the option appears as 'Never ~how ~milie~ a~ icon~ for thi~ po~t'!
Suggestions for the font issue would be very gratefully received. I looked through the last updates I did (today) and didn't see anything obvious but I then realised I wasn't sure what quite to look for. Here are the log entries from today:

I am booting the standard kernel, not the lts, so the upgrade hasn't affected the kernel. I wasn't sure what libupnp did but judging by the package descriptions resulting from a pacman -Ss upnp, it doesn't seem likely to have anything to do with fonts but rather networking.
I checked ~/.xsession-errors in case Firefox was logging any errors there but I can't see anything relevant - all the errors seem to be KDE's usual prolific output.
Should I look further back? I probably didn't reboot after every previous system upgrade. Or did my messing with grub and causing a panic do some sort of damage which might be causing this? (I thought that was fairly unlikely but maybe I'm just being unduly optimistic.)
EDIT: When people post code, the 's's are OK but the 'a's and 'm's are squiggles instead.
I'm using the infinality freetype, fontconfig etc. Could that have anything to do with the problem? I didn't just install them or make any changes but might some other package have changed in a way that is incompatible with these? Or which requires some tweaking I'm not aware of?

Er... my 's's have magically returned? But I have no idea why. I didn't even restart Firefox. (I'd already tried that and it made no difference.)
Would really like to know why...
EDIT: I still don't have 'm's etc. in code listings, though.

  • Trouble with fonts/lines weight

    Hello everyone,
I am coming to you because I have a problem for which i cannot see any solution... I am not specialized in indesign, but yet I used it for a long time and this problem looks really strange for me. I will directly show you a picture :
Here are also diret links to bigger pictures :
    http://i83.servimg.com/u/f83/10/05/57/17/bold10.jpg
    http://www.servimg.com/u/f83/10/05/57/17/light10.jpg
(right click > open in new tab, then switch between tabs to see the problem)
As you can see, the weight of text and lines change between the documents. The problem is, there are supposed to be exactly the same, as they come from the same master. (these pictures are just an example, i have the same problem for about half of my pages). When I unlink both from the master with ctrl+shift+click, then i delete the light one and try to copy the bold one, the problem remains, showing it is not an object issue but more a page issue. Problem is, I created those pages by dupplicating them when needed... so they really should be the same.
Of course, i thought at the beginning it was an indesign problem, but when I export it to pdf, the problem remains. And the worst is, it is still there after print, making the light one almost unreadable.
When i export to eps and put it in adobe distiller, the problem is fixed for texts! But it remains on any non-text object, like the scissors and scissors-lines.
I don't really know what I can do, and my timeline is getting really close. Thanks in advance for reading, and thanks alot to anyone who can give me an idea of what to look for.
Please note that i use indesign cs6.
    Regards,
    Antoine

Yeah this is something i've done, because the text above we don't see here is bigger. But it sure isn't because of this, as I have said I have the same probleme on lots of pages, and it does it for the whole content of the page, including master's elements or unique elements. Only objetcs where there isn't problem is on imported photos... Also, please note that i see the problem on high quality offset industrial printers, the one which will be used to print the thousand of pages in a few days.
Ok i just tried a lot of things to upload the pages here. I went through modifications and all, to send you two fake pages. At the end of modifications the problem was gone... So by watching every step of the modifications i made i identified the problem :
The lines and fonts get thin when i put pictures on the spread (it gets thin if i put pictures on the facing page also) and it's getting back in bold when i delete them. Now that i know this, i can see that indeed every pages with pictures are the pages with thin lines... the thing is, i will have to put pictures on every pages.
Pictures are psd in CMYK japan coated if this can help.
I'll let you know if i find the solution, in the meantime thank you if you have any tip
If i don't find anything i may just make the font a bit bolder, but I don't really like this solution because text placement is really precise in some pages.
Thanks a lot for your answers!

i recently installed new fonts on my macbook (os x 10.5.7) and
after that something messed up something with Arial font

    Open up Font Book application.
Visually check all your fonts to see one that looks like the culprit.
When you see it, delete it.

For iPhone, digital camera, etc, you always do a backup for situation like this, your iPhone or digital camera are not backup devices.
If you do have a backup, you can restore from that backup. If you don't it is gone.

  • Trouble with Trajan Pro in Flash CS4

    Hi there
I have been having trouble with fonts on my Macmini PPC. I downloaded FontNuke to delete the font caches, which worked to an extent, but no matter what I try, Trajan Pro just will not show up in the fonts list in Flash. Trajan Pro is installed on my system in /Library/Fonts and ~/Library/Fonts and still it won't show up in the fonts list. Isn't Trajan Pro an Adobe font after all?
Has anyone else had this problem? How did you solve it? I would appreciate any help.

  • Trouble with PDF fonts - fields only

We're having trouble with our PDFs once the data is merged into the PDF template. All of the merged data appears cut in half in the form fields so only the top half of the letters are shown; the rest of the document is fine. We think this could be due to a font issue, but loading different fonts haven't seemed to make any difference. Could this be caused by anything besides the fonts?
    Thanks!

Pdf is designed for presenting information graphically to reduce the file size. This reduction is achieved by making it an uneditable - something that comes in handy if you don't want people to alter your content.
You can (using a pdf writter) create pdf forms where information can be added in to a text field or box. However if you want to edit the content from a pdf file then you could select the text and copy and paste it in to a document like Pages or Word and then re-export when you're finished.
But I'm affraid you can't edit pdf as such - this is the case on Macs and PCs. If you need to edit documents on different platforms then you'll need to find a common editor. There's Office for Mac (student teacher versions) or you could try OpenOffice Org - it's free, works on both Macs and PCs, and will convert most Word documents provided there's not too many tables or a complex layout format.
    Hope this helps

Help! @I'm having trouble with how the font/font size appears once its in InDesign. It looks good in Word, then I make my PDF, place it and it suddenly looks different. It's frustrating because not all of the documents look that way, creating a very inconsistent look. What am I doing wrong?

Sure. The first screen shot is the PDF after it's placed in InDesign. The second one is the PDF.

  • Dictionary has trouble with one of its fonts... How to solve?

    Hi everyone,
My problem is the following: the OS X Dictionary app has severe trouble displaying one of the fonts it uses, I assume it should be Baskerville Italic (Bold Italic gets displayed correctly). See the following screenshot:
I have pretty much tried everything: resetting system fonts via Font Book, manually de- and reactivating the fonts Dictionary uses (Baskerville, Helvetica Neue, and Hiragino Mincho Pro W3; they're all active now) and checking whether I have other fonts that OS X could possibly confuse with one of the system fonts (I have a large font library with many duplicates from art school). Nothing helped.
Anybody had a similar problem and found a solution for this?
On a related, but less important note: when I reset all system fonts with Font Book (which should throw all fonts that are not included in OSX in a separate folder and deactivate them, as far as I understood it), nothing happened, except that he told me all my system fonts are fine. Could it be that installing new versions of OSX over older ones confuses the system about which are system fonts and which aren't?
And: I cannot find Baskerville in the system font folder at /System/Library/Fonts. Isn't it supposed to be there if Dictionary uses it?
    Thanks for any help!

    mentalmenthol wrote:
In addition to those I had separate font files called e.g. "Cyrillic A Upright", "Greek Inclined" etc. that would apparently only include the respective character sets (counting around 200-250 characters each). These are the ones I deactivated entirely
Thanks for the explanation!  Those separate font files are what I meant by "junk", but that is not really a good term in this case, they are just using a non-standard encoding which is potentially incompatible with the Unicode standard used by OS X.  Lion's expanded Baskerville is the Unicode replacement for them.
It is quite common for OS X to get confused by fonts like that which map symbols to Latin instead of their correct Unicode assignments.  Helvetica Fractions and Times Phonetic have caused similar problems for many users in the past.

  • Problem with font in terminal.app

    Hello all
I tried to use the font Inconsolata (downloadable from http://www.levien.com/type/myfonts/inconsolata.html) with the terminal.app. Prior to the update to snow leopard everything was alright. But now this font doesn't render anymore in the terminal.app (although it worked once till the next restart also under snow leopard!). Strange thing is, the font works absolutely normal in all other apps (e.g. macvim oder texteditor). So the font seems to be ok. But why does the font not work any more in the terminal.app? Is there a special font-cache for the terminal? I already tried to delete the user and the system font cache.
A picture might help to understand the problem:
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11881979/Bildschirmfoto%202010-09-27%20um%2021.54.47.png
Some hints on how to remedy this problem?
    Greetings
    Jerri

That is very strange. OpenType was the format that had the least issues as Apple worked out the early bugs in the complete 64 bit rewrite of the font engine in Snow Leopard. Type 1 PostScript was where the majority of the trouble was.
As I noted above, I had no trouble with the font, so can only assume there's some sort of issue with your system. At least the TrueType version works.
The only thing not done was reinstalling the OS. If you want to take the time to try that, back up the drive and run the OS X installer from the desktop. That will put a fresh copy of OS X on the drive while keeping all of your third party apps, preferences and such intact. Then apply all available updates.

You have your image in the 'body editable region' wrapped in <p></p> tags (paragraph tags). <p> tags have padding and margin set on them by default.
    <p><img src="/images/aboutus2.jpg" width="675" height="300" /></p>
You can either just remove the <p></p> tags or you can zero out the padding and margin:
    p {
    padding: 0;
    margin: 0;
Unfortuanately the above will target every paragraph on your page which might not be desirable so I would just remove the <p> tags as it is not necessary to wrap an image in them.
If you do want to keep the <p> tags then use some inline css to specifically remove the padding and margin on that particular one:
    <p style="padding: 0; margin: 0;"><img src="/images/aboutus2.jpg" width="675" height="300" /></p>

I'm not sure how to post a message. I hope this might interest someone. The situation; 3 floors,I am having trouble with an an Airport Extreme, 802.11n on the top floor and a Mac Pro 3.1 on the bottom floor. Not always but often it has trouble seeing the Airport and making a connection. I have an older Airport Express, would it help to install it? would it work best if it was installed in the same room? should it be installed half way in between? Get another Extreme? The Mac Book Pro on the middle floor can see 11 networks in the neighbourhood if that might be causing a problem or would if I installed the Express. Thank for your consideration.

Thanks for your time ... I appologize for the font and colour, I compossed the question in pages and failed to notice the font colour as grey ... there are a variety of computers of various ages so I think it is using a setting that allows both 5G and 2.4 ... the connection to the Airport is thru a cable modem and cable does run throuhout the house ... maybe those hard wires would be a place to look at ... do you think that putting the 'Express' on the second floor might help ... thanks again ...
