Awkward Pauses

I recently upgraded to iTunes 9 & Snow Leopard 10.6.1. I've noticed some disturbing behavior while watching podcasts in iTunes. Randomly there with be a system wide pause, not sure if this is an iTunes issue or a Snow Leopard issue, I've just noticed it more when watching podcasts.
The podcast is local, not on an external drive, and is being played back at 200%. The video will pause, the cursor spins, eventually all Apple Core Apps pause and when its finally over, the video has jumped in time as if it were playing the entire time. This is annoying because I then have to drag to rewind to watch the segment over again. I've noticed that if a segment pauses, its highly susceptible to repeat pausing when I replay it.
I noticed this issue on my PC, but attributed it to the fact that my PC's iTunes library resides on the backup partition of my TimeMachine.
Its rather frustrating and is slowing down my work flow as I have to wait for the pause to resolve before I can continue work.
Thanks
-John

I've just finished this game and I really like what is is trying to do. The lore is fantastic it could really blossom into and excellent series with a bit of a shaky start if they're allowed to give it another try. The big thing I'd like to be changed and maybe added to the current game via a patch is the listening to tapes on the move similar to the way in which Kilzone Shadow fall did it using the controllers speaker. I'd also like the sequel to kick straight on with what's next for Galahad AND ABSOLUTELY NOT A PREQUEL!  I do hope they get another shot at polishing up what could be once of PlayStations stand out franchieses.

  • Encore CS4's Slideshow component= WORTHLESS

    Hi,
When I create slideshows in Adobe Encore CS4 and then build them, they look "fine" when played on a computer DVD player.
However, when playing the authored DVD on an actual DVD player attached to a TV, the playback is cropped, images come out extremely dark, and each song flickers at the start of the slideshow.
I've done a lot more testing of building slideshows in Adobe Encore CS4, before I came to this realization:
ADOBE ENCORE CS4 IS FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR WAYS OFF FROM BEING READY FOR PRODUCTION USE FOR SLIDESHOWS. DO NOT USE ADOBE ENCORE CS4 FOR ANY SORT OF ACTUAL PRODUCTION USE FOR SLIDESHOWS.
I am extremely frustrated how obvious that there was absolutely no quality assurance testing with Adobe Encore CS4. When you use Adobe Encore CS4, the whole feel of using the software is that it was totally rushed out the door at about 55% complete.
    My top complaints:
-When importing multiple images to the Encore library, occasional images do not get imported at all(WTF???????????????)
-images that are imported to the Encore library occasionally LOSE THEIR ORIGINAL ASSET when saving, closing, then re-opening a project.
-Encore CS4 slows down literally, exponentially, as you add a lot of images to the library. At about 500 images of about 3-4 megs each, my Core 2 Quad with 6 gigs of ram slows to a crawl.
-when in the slow state, Adobe Encore CS4 crashes randomly (and this slow state is when most of the slideshow editing needs to get done)
    -authored playback is cropped
-authored playback comes out extremely dark on DVD players
-99 slide limit, which is overcome by dividing the slideshow into two slideshows, but.. there is a long and awkward pause when shifting between two slideshows during playback
Using Adobe Encore CS4 for slideshows is gauranteed to leave an extremely bad user experience and some loss of respect for Adobe.
I have no choice but to learn what other DVD slideshow building software is out there. So far, Nero, and even Windows Movie Maker, which comes free with windows seems better than Adobe Encore CS4, in terms of building slideshows.

I've been using Adobe Encore CS4 to author Blu-Ray discs with slideshows on my iMac.  I've found a solution that seems to work well.  But I don't use the Encore slideshow editor for this purpose.
When I import high-quality 16:9 JPEG photos directly into Encore and build a slideshow using the Encore slideshow editor, the results are terrible when viewed on a big-screen HDTV connected to a Blu-Ray player.  The colors seem off, and the resolution is horrible.  There are all sorts of jagged edges and other artifacts.  A slideshow on a standard-definition DVD built using iPhoto and iDVD looks much better than a "high-definition" Blu-Ray slideshow built using the Encore CS4 slideshow feature.
A better solution is to simply build the slideshow in iPhoto, cropping the individual photos to 16:9 (or using the 16:9 setting on your digital still camera, if it has one), and export the iPhoto slideshow as a high-definition QuickTime movie file (*.mov).  You will have to play around a bit to find the option in iPhoto that allows custom export settings, but once you find it you can encode the entire slideshow using the H.264 codec with full 1920 x 1080 resolution.  Then you can import the resulting *.mov file into Encore as an asset, then create a timeline for it.  You basically treat it like a movie in Encore.  The final result looks great on my 1080p TV.  Breathtaking, in fact.
Encore CS4 for Mac seems to have lots of bugs in it.  For example, I just downloaded the latest update yesterday (I think it was 4.0.1).  Now, whenever I try to build a Blu-Ray project, I get an error message, no matter what I do.  Even if I start a new project from scratch.  So I had to use Apple Time Machine to restore the previous version of Encore (4.0.0.258), which works fine.
Another bug is that you can't change the title of an HD menu in Encore.  Encore has a very limited number of HD menus.  If you want to change the title of an HD menu from the generic one provided ("Our Travel Diaries", for example) to your own title ("Our 2009 Summer Vacation", for example), you can't do it in Encore.  Well, maybe YOU can.  But I can't figure out how to do it.  So I export the menu to Photoshop Elements, change the text there, and re-import it into Encore.  You can change the titles of buttons directly in Encore.  But not the actual menu title.
Also, Encore has caused trouble for me when I try burning Blu-Ray rewritable discs.  So I simply use Encore to create a *.iso image file, then burn it using Roxio Toast 10 Titanium.
Anyway, with these various workarounds, I'm finally able to create high-quality Blu-Ray discs with movies and slideshows that look great on my 60-inch Sony SXRD 1080p TV.
It's a shame that somebody doesn't produce a simple interlocking suite of consumer-grade Mac-compatible tools that can be used for the entire HD workflow from camera to Blu-Ray disc, similar to the way in which iMovie, iPhoto, and iDVD work for standard-definition DVDs.  Apparently, the latest version of Adobe Premiere Elements for Windows does this sort of thing.  But there's nothing equivalent for the Mac.  And Apple still seems to be dragging its feet with regard to Blu-Ray.
Some people have expressed the opinion that it's OK for Encore CS4 to include a slideshow editor that's essentially useless.  I tend to disagree.  Any significant feature that gets added to a piece of software and that's advertised as being useful ought to work at least reasonably well.  But then my background is in the hardware industry, not the software industry.  In hardware, even a minor glitch can cost a company millions of dollars in lost revenue, recalls, loss of customer confidence, etc.  Software designers, by contrast, seem to be able to get away with a degree of sloppiness that would quickly bankrupt a company in the hardware world.
However, I'm at least grateful that by using Encore CS4 in conjunction with Final Cut Pro, Compressor, iPhoto, Photoshop Elements, and Toast, I'm able to produce a very nice Blu-Ray disc that provides jaw-dropping picture and sound quality for movies and slideshows.

  • IOS Default.png and the 6sec Black Screen

    Greetings fellow scripters!
I'm at the 99% point with my app and have hit this terrible final snag.  Everything runs great.  Art looks crisp, sound is a nice fidelity, and the whole app is only 32mb in its .ipa form.  This is all fine, but I can't seem to get rid of this long black screen.
The Default.png loads and unloads in less than a second, then there is a long awkward pause before the .swf finally adds to the display list.
    Things I've tried:
-Using a tiny loader .swf and loading in the big .swf.  Much of it contains AS, so it just loads in the stage and bugs.
-Optimization.  I brought it from 112 to 32mb, and that's the best I can do without losing too much quality.
-The iPad simulator.  It loads fine there.  Loader class works and everything.
I'm surprised that I haven't seen tons of people complaining about this, but I'm definitely open to the possibility that I'm doing something weird.  If anyone has overcome this hurdle and would like to offer some expert advice, I would be greatful.
    Thanks!
    Blake

I tried that and had no luck.  I've even tried having no code running or symbols loaded and putting a different stage color to check when the loading is complete. I get the same 6 second load followed by the stage color showing.  So it definitely seems it is just the loading of the .swf that is causing this long pause.
Has anyone successfully published an iPad app that did not have the long black pause?

  • Why is it that Itunes 7 makes Skip Shuffling in Artists Folders!?

iTunes 7 is so stupid and horrible, but I think teh worst part is they made it to any song you have clicked as "skip when shuffling" now skip when your in it's actual album or artists folder!! That is an outrage, now I can have no songs clicked as "skip when shuffling" because it ruins it in my folders, but then again it ruins it when I shufflke all songs at once.. Anyone know a way around this, and to get it back to the way it use to be before the iTunes 7 upgrade???
Also what does "Part of a gapless album" mean because I have it clicked on numerous songs and the album still has gapped songs in albums because of the stupid "skip when shuffling" being effetive everywhere now!
    thanks!
    Dimension 3000   Windows XP

Can you clarify yourself I'm having a hard time following what you are trying to say.
"Skip when shuffling" just means that iTunes will not consider that song when shuffling your songs for a playlist. It doesn't actually cause a skip in your songs.
"Part of a gapless album" means that iTunes will not insert a pause in between songs. This allows songs that are part of a non-stop album to continuously flow from one song to another without an awkward pause in between songs.

  • The Order 1886's Sequel. Suggestions for improvements.

If there is going to be a Sequel to The Order 1886,those changes need to happen:
1.)Black bars should be optional, it's a game not a movie. If I take a coverI want to be able to see what's happening behind it. It's as simple as that. 2.)Character movement restrictions should disappear. You should be ableto choose when to run, to stealth, to walk or to take a cover at any given time.Dont dictate the player how to play the game.Look at The Last of Us from Naughty Dog, that's how it's done right. 3.)Auto cover function aka "sticky back" should also disappear from the game. It's annoying! 4.)Instead add "quick turn". 5.)Ability to acces my inventory at any given time. Why would you restrictme from checking my inventory?! 6.)Don't take my guns away. There are situations where you are forced touse for example sniper riffle? That would be ok, only if my previousgun wouldn't suddenly disappear. 7.)Don't make interacive objects with shiny reflections, like guns on theground, with cheap reflections running acros them. It takes away fromthe immersion, ruins the atmosphere. 8.)Most important thing: how cutscenes are melted into the gameplay isannoying. Don't do them like this: 5 seconds is gameplay, 5 seconds iscut scene, repeat.Because there are those awkward pauses where your character is kindof preparing to end his movement at the end of every cutscene.Such transitions are annoying. And because there are a lot of such transitions you aren't sure when tostart moving your character. Better, you group all small cutscenes together.I hope you understand what I mean. 9.)Drink potion faster and no QTE for it. Again it is annoying. There is nothingbetter than lying on the ground while enemy is shooting at you, and youcan't do s**t because you are busy with potion drinking. That's fun!PS: if you are playing on Hard difficulty those potions are pretty uselessbecause as soon as you hit the ground after beeing hit, there is no timefor QTE to recover. 10.)Non lethal kills. Give us the ability to just stun the enemy. There are times where you have to kill guards just because theyare in the way. Why? 11.)Ability to listen to the tapes on the go. To be able to press play while youare running around.Because otherwise nobody cares. Only small amount of players will goto the menu and listen to them there. And this tapes should containsomehow useful information. 12.)Bring the interaction to the world. The world as it is, looks dull and sterile. There is nothing you can interact with but those goddamn photos andfrying pans. Make levels more destructible. More room to explore.More collectables, which will tell you more about the story. 13.)Away with "heavy breathing". It is annoying as hell. Especially at thebeginning of the game. 14.)Fights with small werewolves, which are running like dogs, aren't funat all, there is no variety to the gameplay. And overall, every encounterwith them feels "copy paste".
15.)Bossfights are a joke. Give them freedom to move, give them AI.They should be scary, but they are not.Guy with a gun is scarier than a werewolf, that's not right.Or do better job at QTE, more variety, more movement.Take a look at God of War as an example.  16.)As many players noticed, game is a bit short. It would not hurt to make a sequel longer. 17.)Improve the AI of enemies. It isn't bad, just that it could be better. It does not look right when some guy is standing there and shootingall the time, it's weird. All the ammunition wasting?  18.)Bring customisation to the guns. It would be awesome to modifyyour guns in Tesla's laboratory. This will add greatly to the wariety of the gameplay. 19.)Instant death QTE, really? REALLYYYY?
I really hope someone from "Ready at Dawn" will come acrossthis list and will consider at least some of those suggestions.
What you guys, gals think about this list, do you agree, disagree?Do you have any other suggestions?

  • Poor battery - MBA 2013 i7 8GB RAM 128GB SSD

    Hi,
I have been using my 11 inch MacBook Air 2013 model for just over three weeks now and I am not getting anywhere close to the 9 hour benchmark obtained via 'light browsing with Safari'.
So we are on the same page, here are the applications I have installed since the date of purchase:
    - MS Office suite
    - Chrome
That's it! No DropBox, no dedicated Flash Player plugin, nothing more than what I have listed above in addition to default array of applications that come preinstalled with Mountain Lion.
I recived only 5 hours by running the following basic test:
    - Screen brightness at 5 bars
    - Only default applications running in the background after a clean restart (Activity monitor shows that the CPU is on average idle 97% of the time)
    - Set the display option for dimming to Never via the Energy Saver panel.
I just left the computer on my desk and monitored it intermittendely until it died. It took 5 hours for the battery to completely drain.
Here is the information for the battery as reported by the System Information utility:
    Battery Information:
      Model Information:
      Serial Number:          C0132250CUNF90G43
      Manufacturer:          DP
      Device Name:          bq20z451
      Pack Lot Code:          0
      PCB Lot Code:          0
      Firmware Version:          511
      Hardware Revision:          000a
      Cell Revision:          1198
      Charge Information:
      Charge Remaining (mAh):          4481
      Fully Charged:          No
      Charging:          No
      Full Charge Capacity (mAh):          5116
      Health Information:
      Cycle Count:          21
      Condition:          Normal
      Battery Installed:          Yes
      Amperage (mA):          -383
      Voltage (mV):          8300
Feedback given to me by Apple support:
"Everything seems normal [long awkward pause]"
Feedback given to me when I talked to a Genius at my local Apple store:
"Monitor your Activity Monitor for CPU hogging applications, everything seems normal"
I am disappointed to say the least since I am only getting 5 hours when I am not interacting with my computer at all. The official benchmarks give me the right to expect more.

Thank you for your response, PlotinusVeritas:
However, as I mentioned I was not running any other applications asides from what comes pre-installed with Mountain Lion.  The CPU is on average 98% idle.  Apple claims the 11 inch model is able to last approximately 9 hours with basic web browsing. I was getting less than 5 under IDLE conditions (i.e. not using the computer at all - CPU idle). The difference between the i7 and i5 is insignificant in terms of power consumption.
    Very disappointed by this.
I would refund the product if I could, but Apple Care told me it takes at least several cycles before the battery gets fully calibrated. I laid my trust on their 'expertise' and my 14 day return period has expired.
To potential customers, I would advise you on waiting out a bit longer as more computers will soon adopt the Haswell architecture which will consequently provide you with much cheaper alternatives.
Performance wise the device is what you would expect from any computer with an SSD drive with tons of RAM and a UNIX OS.
I would appreciate if they could at least try replacing my battery as other individuals with the same setup as me are getting far greater benchmarks.

  • In My car, the music won't pause for phone call in iOS 8.3

I'm having a strange and potentially awkward new bug when I have my iPhone 5S connected to my car via Bluetooth. I just upgraded to iOS 8.3, and all of a sudden my music won't pause for an incoming phone call. Is anyone else experiencing this?

I've spent over 6 hours troubleshooting this issue with Apple,  AT&T Advanced Business Technical Support,  and I just got back from another 2 hour session with a top Apple Genius expert at my local Apple Store a few minutes ago.
There does not seem to be any resolution with the 8.3 iOS software on my iPhone 6 Plus!  They gave me a brand new phone and it still exhibited the problem - Call forwarding does not work. They tried to push the issue off on AT&T, but then they could not produce a single phone at the Apple store running iOS 8.3 that showed call forwarding working.
I hope Apple releases a fix of this soon!  It's critical to my daily business as I need to turn call forwarding off/on several times a day due to poor coverage or no coverage depending on my physical location.
If someone has any suggestions please help!

  • Play/Pause/Next/Previous functionality doesn't work using keyboard/remote

I have recently upgraded my 24'' iMac to a 27'' i5 iMac and migrated my information via the Migration Assistant using a gigabit peer-to-peer (crossover cable) ethernet connection. Since then or shortly after the play, pause, next and forward buttons on the keyboard stopped working (or they never worked, I am unsure).
Moreover, the same functionalities when accessed using the Apple remote also does not work, note that the volume up and down buttons do work from the Apple remote.
I am also having difficulty getting my digital camera identified using the USB interface but that is another show. The camera is not even seen by the Image Capture tool in the Utilities, note that I succeeded once in getting it identified but not since then. The only change I can remember was installing the MouseWizard tool for extending gestures of the magical mouse, which is probably the finest thing I have got from the whole upgrade (the most easily appreciable). Please ignore the matter of my digital camera, for me mentioning it only for the slight possibility that it may be connected. To this humble users they are two things that are not working at all. Some of the applications I have installed is Parallels Desktop 4.0, which seems to identify the camera once connected but not the Mac OS X system.
Thanks in advance for your generous help.

Today I made a brave international call to Apple in the USA, realising that less than 90 days has passed since I purchased my new iMac. The phone call lasted for 62 minutes and was utterly embarrassing and genuinely awkward for me as it was totally unhelpful and very, very costly. The guy on the other side was very unable to provide any meaningful help and it was not easy for me to tell him that he was not, so I had to go on with the costly call which was mostly filled with moments of silence and contemplation (and forgetting -for the thousandth time, that my keyboard is wireless, telling me one time after the other to try to unplug it from the USB and connect it again).
Anyway, I am delighted to have discovered the problem myself, which is amazingly simple, and unbelievably responsible of both of the two (seemingly unconnected) problems I was having (the problem with the functional keys on the keyboard and the identification of my digital camera).
The problem was simply solved by deleting a textual file from the root of the home folder which is the file called ".CFUserTextEncoding". I have no idea what this textual file stores (a string of the form "X:XX") and how could the four bytes in it be of so much annoyance in my case, but deleting it can bring the media control keys back to life and make the digital camera identify effortlessly. Quite puzzling I would say.

  • My animated gif keeps pausing in captivate and flash

Hi guys, thanks for your help.
I made an animated gif in Photoshop CS4 and inserted it as an animation into captivate 6. The animation works (I played it several times by opening it with internet explorer and safari). But when I open it in Captivate the animation goes black for a split second-several times, before it reappears-several times. It gives it almost a "reloading" or pause look when I play it. The same in flash, but in Adobe Flash CS4 Professional the timeline shows black dots once in a while, as you can see in the screen shot below.
See those black dots? I will insert a picture of what happens, when the player lands on one of those black dots:
It's the same animation, but only shows a little. Like I said, it plays fine when I open it with an internet browser, it plays fine when I play it in photoshop, but it just won't work with flash or captivate.
Any thoughts? Thanks so much!! I really appreciate your help guys!
    Nat

No problem. Building a simple animation in Flash isn't that bad. You could save each "frame" as an image from PhotoShop and then import these into Flash and place one frame at the time on a keyframe in the flash timeline (press F6 to insert a keyframe).
If you want your animation to loop then you don't have to do anything as this is the default behavior. If you want it to stop at the last frame you insert a command in ActionScript to stop it. Select the last keyframe and hit F9 and type stop() in the ActionScript window.
    Good luck!

  • At a Genius Bar appointment yesterday, we determined that I needed to go to Mountain Lion from Lion.  I purchased Mountain Lion at the Bar, and paused the install so that I could resume from home.  Now I can't find it to resume. Not in Downloads. ?????

When I upgraded to Lion, my Parallels stopped working and I got a Bootcamp error message.  It had worked fine for the prior year.  I upgraded to Parallels 7.  No luck. At the Genius Bar, the Genius uninstalled Bootcamp.  No luck.  I still get "The Boot Camp partition /dev/diskOs4 used by Hard Drive 1 is missing."
Another Genius suggested upgrading to Mountain Lion.  While at the Bar, I purchased Mountain Lion and then we paused the install so that I could resume it at home.  Once I got home, I can't find the Mountain Lion installer to resume.  It's not in the Downloads file.  Any clue?
My business programs all run on Windows, so I have to get it operating.  The Genius Bar isn't much help.  Does anyone know how to get Mountain Lion installed?  How to get Parallels working?

The "Geniuses" (and I use that word in sarcasm) at the Bar are lying to you. Upgrading from Lion to Mt Lion will not fix whatever problems you are having. In fact it will most likely make them worse.
If you want to try installing Mt Lion to fix the problems you are having you will need to open the Mac App Store link in your Dock, Login to your Apple ID account for the MAS and go to your Purchases area. Mt Lion should be in there and you will be able to do a proper download. Once you either set your Mac into sleep or shut down and then left the internet connection at the Bar all record of that download was lost. So you will need to restart it again from the beginning, like described above.
    Good Luck

Everything works on ITunes except play function.I can select as song I want but cannot get it off "pause."I tried going to controls and instructing it to play(no go) and clicking again and again on play arrow(which flips it to pause...).Any ideas for a very old, very frustrated non-tech guy???
    Please!! Thnaks!!!

Replying to myself. Kept trying different areas of the ipod this evening, clicking various buttons, including some I'd never used before. All of a sudden I could see my Nano in iTunes. I quickly clicked on Restore before iTunes changed its mind about recognizing the iPod. Moved some songs onto it and it appears to be back to normal.  Keeping my fingers crossed.

If you'll notice your encoding in AME, it normally maxes out all your CPU cores.  It does mine.  This is awesome!
But, if you want to edit, you need those cores, especially with Long-GOP footage that relies on CPU for real-time decompression.  So, in effect, you're telling your computer to let Pr take over the CPU when you start editing in Pr.
It's a pretty smart way that Adobe enabled this behavior, if you ask me.

  • Adobe Media Encoder pausing rendering while working in Premiere Pro

    Hello everyone,
So I am redering a video in Adobe Media Encoder and at the same time I am editing a new one in Premiere Pro.
I noticed that AME is constantly pausing the rendering and did not know why. It turns out that while I'm editing a video in Premiere Pro, I am constantly pressing the space bar to start/pause the video I'm editing. While I do that, AME keeps pausing/unpausing the rendering. Somehow, pressing the space bar in PP has an effect in AME.
I have no clue why it does that because the Premiere Pro window has the focus, not the AME one.
    Has anyone ever seen that?
I use Windows 8 and Adobe CC.

    Hi Rallymax,
Yes I do queue footage by having an Autowatch set up on the directories where the video is written to.  I rarely do a direct export unless testing new settings.
Don't take this as gospel but I too had a feeling that GPU acceleration didn't happen with AME, only direct export.  Not sure where that came from, I did watch some of the recent Adobe TV Web Seminar's about new features of CC products etc, so maybe on one of those?
I found this while trying to find out where I had seen it but it is from AMD site not Adobe so whether it's fully 100% correct I dunno:
    Adobe Media Encoder
The Adobe Media Encoder (AME), with support for OpenCL™ and GPU acceleration, automates the production of multiple encoded versions of source files, sequences, and compositions in Premiere Pro CC. With the GPU-accelerated AME and AMD graphics technology, editors can quickly encode projects and output files for virtually any destination. AMD GPUs handle the heavy lifting, freeing the system’s CPU to perform other functions.
I will try the same test as Jason, if I can find any AVHCD video and see what the results are.  Will be interesting.
