AWOL FireWire Bus can cause performance problems

This is a tip for anyone who may be having undiagnosed performance problems. Use System Profiler and look at the FireWire entry. If there is no information other than the title FireWire Bus that may be the cause of the problem.
See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88338 for information. I was able to fix my performance problems by disconnecting my iMac from power and everything except mouse and keyboard.
I've written a small AppleScript which run System Profiler each day and will alert me to a missing FireWire Bus. I hope it never happens again.

Yup, resetting the NVRAM seems to fix a lot of
HD/firewire problems.
I am not even using firewire so I didn't have any firewire problems (as such). My problems seemed primarily to be performance related ... I assume the OS was spending a lot of cycles trying to check the status of the Firewire Bus.

    I cannot control the sensor on my Mac, it moves by itself, and opens different pages. What can cause this problem? please help me.

    There are several possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps until it's resolved.
    1. Follow the instructions in this support article.
    2. Reset the System Management Controller.
    3. If you're using a Bluetooth trackpad, investigate potential sources of interference, including USB 3 devices.
    4. A swollen battery in a MacBook Pro or Air can impinge on the trackpad from below and cause erratic behavior. If you have trouble clicking the trackpad, this is likely the reason. The battery must be replaced.
    5. There's a report that a (possibly defective) Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter can cause the built in trackpad of a MacBook to  behave erratically. If you're using such an adapter, disconnect it and test.
    6. There's also a report of erratic cursor movements caused by an external display that was connected but not turned on.
    7. If none of the above applies, or if you have good reason to think your computer is being controlled remotely, remove it from the network by turning off Wi-Fi, disconnecting from a Bluetooth network link, and unplugging the Ethernet cable or USB modem, whichever is applicable. If the cursor movements stop immediately, you should suspect an intrusion.

  • Load balancing issue causes performance problems!

    Hi
    Can someone tell me if there is a way to find the list of users who are logging into the system directly (without using a logon group)? They are hitting the CI which is causing performance issues. Eventhough we've setup system messages and repeated emails its hard to track who aren't following it.
    Any ideas would be really appretiated rewarded with points.
    Thanks
    Arun

    easy:
    on the CI, change rdisp/gui_auto_logout to 60.
    if they login and there is no activity for 60 seconds, they will be logged out promptly. they will stop trying to login into the CI after awhile.
    and if they keep on trying, lock their account into SU01... they will get the message.
    another possibility is a user exit on the logon screen. check the ABAP forum for this.

  • RTMFMessaging causes performance problem

    Hi,
    We have a performance problem with the component:
    EP:KM:COLL:class com.sap.ip.collaboration.core.api.rtmf.core.RTMFMessaging.ReceiveJMSQueue
    This component according to the Request overview is executing literally billions of requests each day. It is also not closing many of the requests. I wondered if anyone could give some hints as to performance settings for RTMF in a load-balanced landscape that would prevent this behaviour?
    We have a Central Instance with 3 nodes, each running a web dispatcher and 4 application servers in a load-balanced environment - so it's meant to be a high availability Portal until this problem makes it fall over!
    The symptoms are also that the performance degrades over time as the RTMF requests are not always closed, until they consume enough resources that the system stops responding.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks, Marc

    Hi
    As one of the authors has mentioned previously this is not a problem but the way RTMF framework works.  It has a polling mechanism that polls the server for messages.
    By default this polling mechnism is set to Constant Interval which is set to 3 seconds.  So the RTMF will poll the server for messages every 3 seconds.  However, depending on the number of users etc this polling mechanism can be changed to Linear Interval or maximum HPS (see SAP Help for further information).
    This can be changed under: System Admin > System Config > KM Content > Collaboration > RTC > RTC Engine > Polling Policy
    You can certainly look at changing these!  If you have changed this already and still having problems with the requests get back to SDN.

  • List versions causing performance problems

    We have a List - not Library - List - with about 100 columns (Yes. We know that's a lot and have verified that one Item wraps to two DB rows), none of which is indexed.  An InfoPath form is used to enter and
    view the List Items. Versioning is on for auditing purposes. Versioning appears to be causing a significant performance issue - the more versions a record has, the longer it takes for the IP form to open.  Generally, each version adds one second to the
    time it takes for the IP form to open. So if a list item has 30 versions, it takes about 30 seconds from the time the user clicks the Title link until the IP form opens. Obviously having to wait 30 seconds or more for a form to open is a problem.
    The performance is similar when we open the Version History window for any one Item. We also tried using PowerShell to load a List Item's Versions and it, too, behaves the same...about 1s delay for each version an
    Item has.
    Any suggestions on how we can configure the list or SP to prevent versions from slowing performance?

  • Mailbox move from 2007 to 2010 causes performance problems on the 2007 box AFTER the move

    I'm having a problem where moving a mailbox from our 2007 Exchange server to our 2010 Exchange server is causing clients that are still on the 2007 server to lock up, sometimes for up to 20 minutes.  This all happens maybe 5 minutes *after* the mailbox
    move has completed - during the move we see no problems.
    I start seeing events 5015, 5016, and then 10025 on the 2007 box and that's when users start complaining of Outlook locking up and emails going to Outbox.
    If I do this off-hours like at night or on weekends I don't see the problem, which I'm sure is because there are far fewer clients connected.  We do not use cached exchange mode for a variety of reasons but mainly because our document management software
    doesn't play nicely with it.
    I am leaning toward the disk structure of our 2007 server.  They are fast (15k SAS) but arranged in a RAID-5 which isn't ideal, but which keeps up fine in all other cases.  What is happening post-move that makes for so much disk activity?  I
    thought maybe if I moved a good chunk of users off the 2007 box off-hours it might make daytime moves more possible, but I just tried again and it all locked up just the same.
    The details:
    Exchange 2007 SP3 (15k SAS disks, 2x quad core Xeon E5345, 16GB RAM)
    Exchange 2010 (VMware with 4 virtual cores, 16GB RAM, storage on EqualLogic SAN)
    Clients are almost exclusively Outlook 2010 on Win7, though a handful of 2007 users remain.
    We have about 240 users total, about 100 of which have moved to the 2010 system.
    Thanks for any suggestions.  I am stumped at this point.

  • "blued" process causing performance problems (98% CPU use)

    I have a friend who's MacBook fan is spinning at hi RPM's almost constantly. I took at look at her Activity Monitor and there's a process running called "blued" that seems to be the source of the problem. It runs nearly constantly at 90%+ CPU useage, with frequent spikes into the 96-100% range, which is what I assume is causing the cooling fan to go spinning out of control. Does anyone know what this is? I've Googled it to no avail, and am hesitant to just kill it before I know what it is. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Evan,
    I found this in the Apple Developer area: http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man8/blued.8. html
    I would just kill that process from the Activity Monitor.
    Also, Run the hardware tests from your Install DVD (hold down d at Boot) and see if it reports any SNS (Temperature Sensor) errors - if one has failed or the leads have become disconnected then the fans will run at maximums revs by default and should go in for service.

  • JSP causes serious performance problem in my EP

    I have a native JSP application and running it on the EP. This application accessing a Oracle db (using oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver driver).
    When this db not running, my EP doesn't open any page. The EP try to connect with this db, but not get success.
    I modify this application with TRY and CATCH to treat the application problem, but the EP problem continues.
    In the EP Thread Overview (System Adm -> Monitoring -> Portal -> Thread Overview), I see threads (locked) about this application. To unlock this threads, I delete the par file from the Portal and re-deploy it.
    When this threads is deleted, the application treat the problem (display a error message in the iView container) and EP work normally.
    My questions:
    1) Exists some way that the problem with this application does not cause performance problems with the EP (via code or property)?
    2) Exists some property in the Config Tool where I configure the connection timeout for access the external DB?
    3) Exists some way to liberate these (locked) threads of the EP (I see the page Clearing the Portal Runtime Cache - http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/d2/a216e1bd7b431c82fa5ff105187112/frameset.htm - but I don't know if I can use it for this)

  • Can MDAC installation cause navigation problems within the portal?

    Hello,
    I have a client who having problems loading page links in our second level navigation.  Evertime time she clicks on node to expand the tree of links, she gets a "loading" message.  I see this all the time but this message doesn't go away. She also gets a javascript error on the page stating it cannot find the specify module.  She notice the problem around the time of her MDAC file installation.  Do anyone know if this can cause a problem for navigation on the portal?
    Thank you,
    Francis

    You made this bed by over complicating your site. Simple solution, take your pages out of sub-folders.  Nobody but you cares about the .html extensions. IMO, it's a very poor reason for using sub-folders.
    About linking & navigation:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/dreamweaver/cs/using/WScbb6b82af5544594822510a94ae8d65-7c44a.h tml
    Presently, you must be using document relative link paths.  Either switch to Site Root Relative links which will likely work on your remote server but fail to test locally.  Or use absolute URLs (http://).  The downside with this is that DW won't be able to manage links for you.

  • Java 1.4.2 swing (setBounds) performance problem

    Hi,
    We were having performance problems with swing ever since we moved to java 1.4.2 and we finally switched back to 1.4.1. However, we have now traced the problem to JVM and the following simple code demonstrates it.
    I would like to hear from others who faced or solved this.
    When the setBounds is called, there is visible delay in checking/unchecking boxes.
    Without it, the performance is good. The performance is good with 1.4.1 as well.
    Code sample for JComponentTest :
    import java.awt.event.ActionEvent;
    import java.awt.event.ActionListener;
    import java.awt.event.WindowAdapter;
    import java.awt.event.WindowEvent;
    import javax.swing.JButton;
    import javax.swing.JCheckBox;
    import javax.swing.JFrame;
    import javax.swing.JPanel;
    public class JComponentTest extends JFrame {
    public final static int MAX_JLBL = 50;
    private static double _clicked = 0.0;
    // pop up window
    private JPanel _configPanel = new JPanel();
    private JCheckBox[] _configArray = new JCheckBox[MAX_JLBL];
    private JButton _toggle = new JButton("update");
    public JComponentTest() {
    setTitle("JLabelTest");
    // setBounds causes performance problems
    setBounds(1278, 4, 203, 361);
    getContentPane().add(_configPanel);
    for(int i=0; i<_configArray.length; i++){
    _configArray[i] = new JCheckBox("cb"+i);
    configPanel.add(configArray);
    _configArray[i].addActionListener(new ConfigListener());
    configPanel.add(toggle);
    _toggle.addActionListener(new ConfigListener());
    setVisible(true);
    // listenres
    addWindowListener(new WindowAdapter() {
    public void windowClosing(WindowEvent e) {
    System.exit(1);
    } // end constructor
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    new JComponentTest();
    /** This class implements the ActionListener and being used for configuration
    * fields.
    private class ConfigListener implements ActionListener {
    public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent ae) {
    boolean selected = (_clicked%2 ==0);
    if (selected)
    for(int i=0; i<_configArray.length; i++)
    ((JCheckBox)_configArray[i]).setSelected(true);
    else
    for(int i=0; i<_configArray.length; i++)
    ((JCheckBox)_configArray[i]).setSelected(false);
    _clicked++;

    weebib
    We are using Windows XP , Nvidia graphics card, with Multiview. I hope the problem is not specific to the platform.
    It is reproducible with 1.4.2 and absent in 1.4.1

  • Performances Problem in XI using RFC

    Hi All,
    I have some doubts about XI performance:
    Does anybody knows if there is any
    performance restrictions to do RFC calls to XI ?
    What's the best performance Solution in XI ?
    iDoc Adpater or RFC Adapter, File Adapter or RFC Adapter ?
    Is it possible that something in Mapping
    causes performance problem ?
    Thanks

    Hi
    You need to create the Type H RFC in PI system pointing to ECC and reverse in ECC system pointing to PI.
    Create the RFC and test. When you test connection it will show error because of empty message but this will work fine for the Proxy with Data.
    Thanks

  • Performance problem with Function Group

    Hi All,
    when we call a FM .. all the function modules which are present in that function group will be copied into the Main memory .
    so how to solve the performance problems that occur..
    Regards,
    Sravan.

    you should analyse your problem more carefully before asking:
    + you can have performance problems related to the execution of function modules.
    + you can also have memory related performance problems by loading huge function groups (non standard).
    The fix for the second are smaller and welldefined function groups.
    The solutions for the second are constantly discussed here.

  • Problem with firewire bus

    working in final cut pro,  when i now plug drives into to frontside firewire 800 port they are running very slowly and when playing a clip fcp freezes up and i have to force quit. when i plug the drives into the backside fw port or use on my macbook pro they work fine so i'm pretty sure problem is wih frontside port. the device does show up on the system profiler. is there a way to tell from that there's a performance problem. are there any easy fixes for the port? is there a way to reset the bus. thanks.

    unplugging is not 100% reliable resetting the SMC.
    Hitting the power on button for 10 seconds while unplugged (and everything else too) may.
    The older models like 3,1 all had different directions when they came out (1,1 and 2,1 even have a physical SMC button yu can access and use).

  • Firewire: What's causing bus resets?

    I bought a 500GB LaCie d2 Big Disk Extreme to act as a back-up device, and in the week and a half I've had it, I've managed to back-up absolutely nothing. It copies files for a while, but eventually, all activity will slow, and cease. The system freezes, and the only recourse is to either: hard reset the Powerbook by holding down the power button, or pull the Firewire cable. Either activity will usually result in data loss and a massive waste of time.
    And the problem is not just when copying. I've tried repartioning and zeroing all the data on the disc and it even hangs doing that. It's gone into a freeze when trying to rebuild the directory with Disk Warrior! That's not good.
    I've looked at system logs and one thing stands out like a sore thumb. Everytime the drive activity has ceased, it's because something's caused a cascade of bus resets. Look at this:
    Aug 28 11:33:30 Powerbook kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) Apple ID 31 built-in: 992 bus resets in last minute.
    Aug 28 11:36:42 Powerbook kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) Apple ID 31 built-in: 312 bus resets in last minute.

    Aug 28 11:51:14 Powerbook kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) Apple ID 31 built-in: handleSelfIDInt - nodeID not valid (reset bus and retry 2)
    Aug 28 11:52:42 Powerbook kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) Apple ID 31 built-in: 1218 bus resets in last minute.
    Aug 28 11:55:54 Powerbook kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) Apple ID 31 built-in: 1494 bus resets in last minute.
    Aug 28 11:59:06 Powerbook kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) Apple ID 31 built-in: 2005 bus resets in last minute.
    Aug 28 12:02:18 Powerbook kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) Apple ID 31 built-in: 1842 bus resets in last minute.

    Aug 28 12:05:30 Powerbook kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) Apple ID 31 built-in: 6518 bus resets in last minute.
    Thousands of resets a minute, every three minutes! Why? Why? What is doing this to me? It's driving me crazy.
    It could only be the HD, the Firewire cable, the OS, or my Powerbook. I could spend all day trying to narrow it down to one of the four, but if anyone can offer any help from their own experience, I'd appreciate it.
    EDIT: Well, it's most likely the drive itself that's at fault, copying 100+GB to a different drive caused no problems and no resets whatsoever, so clearly it's not the computer or 10.4.2 causing trouble.

    Hi,
    What would cause my PoweBook G4 (OS9.2.2) to freeeze everytime I connect a FireWire (400) device.
    Everything was working fine untill I recently daisychained my SmartDisk VST CD-R/W to the d2 external drive and connected that to my poerbook.
    All devices mount and work fine when connected to my G5 powermac.
    I have updated the Authoring Support.
    Any advice out there would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks
