AWR Report tuning
Hi All,
I have created AWR Report .But i can not anlayse what is the problem in that query which is taking more time to execute from that AWR report.
Can any one give me detail document of the AWR Report Events generated .So, I can analyse from that event where is the problem?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks for your reply

Hello,
Just to start off on the right path I would like you to know that I am a Java developer trying to understand the AWR report. To give a quick overview of my problem :
I have built a load test framework using JMeter and trying to send SOAP requests to my weblogic server. Each of these requests are getting converted multiple Insert, Update and Merge statements and getting executed on the Oracle 10g productions grade DB server. When I run the AWR report, under the "SQL ordered by Executions (Global)" I see statements that have run for 2 billion times. The JDBC connection to the database is configured to have a maximum of 40 connections and I do not see all of them being used up. The issue now is I am NOT generating that kind of load yet. I am creating around 15000 SOAP requests in an hour and I am expecting around 1million records to hit the database. The test runs fine for a couple of hours and then the server starts failing because the database is not responding back properly. When I run the statistics query on tables "gv$session s, gv$sqlarea t, gv$process p" to get the pending sessions in the database I have seen anywhere between 30 - 62 pending sessions with a activity time of more than 300 minutes.
I am sure I am not sending in 2 billion requests from the LoadTest env that I have developed but the AWR report says so. I want to know if there is a possible reason for this behavior. The stuck threads start occurring on the Weblogic server after 30 mins I start the test. Below is the exception I got on weblogic just in case it helps

here intresting is that i also can't have the memory section view also.i trien to clear awr repositary and recreate it..bounce database, also tried taking different snap value. But does notmake any change.can u tell me why tha happening..and how can i get a good awr report.Hi there,
I have covered this in my blog entry on the subject. Check that link out for more licensing information and other resources.
The problem you are experiencing is caused by the fact that AWR is part of the DIAGNOSTIC and TUNING packs of Oracle 11g, which as of 11g is no longer a standard feature of the database but rather an optional extra which must be licensed in addition to your default Oracle Standard Edition package. In terms of the licensing, you just need to license it as an optional extra so that you will actually be using it legally, and then you can go ahead and enable it.
While it may be an additional licensed item, it is actually installed on your DB by default, but is just not enabled. So, once you have cleared the licensing issue, you will be free to enable diagnostics by setting the new database parameter, CONTROL_MANAGEMENT_PACK_ACCESS. You can do this by running the following as a dba:
<pre>alter system set control_management_pack_access="DIAGNOSTIC+TUNING" scope=both;</pre>
After running this command, your database will start accumulating diagnostic information. Note that you will need to wait until new snapshots are created in which the new diagnostic information will be available. I found that although most of the information became available after setting CONTROL_MANAGEMENT_PACK_ACCESS, it was only once the database was restarted that all of the information became available. I have seen many people reporting similar behavior.
Old snapshots will obviously continue to give the errors because they did not have the diagnostic information available at the time. -
It's hard to present AWR report content here as if i go for copy paste the content alinment and format get changed. Is there any better way to present AWR report in my query.
Here is my query.
In a 2 hour AWR reports for a database I can see the below top 5 wait event's

balvindarIn a 2 hour AWR reports for a database I can see the below top 5 wait event's
Comment: 2 hour is a too big interval to draw any conclusion. It should be 15-30 mins maximum.
Apart from that: 88 percent of the wall time is devoted to CPU, so do you have a problem? Not at all!!! Your database is doing pretty nothing.
the database is running on high CPU consumption (there are very less physical reads on database and Logical read is high i suppose ) so I also gather the Segments by Logical Reads. Please provide any suggestion how can i avoid logical reads I/o for the dataabse. If you see at bottom only two segments are responsible for high logical reads.
Comment: the database is not running on high CPU consumption. You would need to run an ADDM report to be able to ascertain that. We have no data on the CPU load of the server, nor how much Oracle is contributing to the load.
You cannot avoid logical read I/O, other than just stopping the application. You can tune them by tuning statements.
In the future, please wrap the output in tags (no spaces, lowercase), or I will need new glasses ;)

User I/O and db file parallel read is high in AWR report
Hi,
We have one performance issue during a job execution.
From the awr report we have identified one query with a table having millions of records causing problems and then we had also fine tuned that query by changing it's code and by using the optmizer hints. It is being executed in plsql batches. After fine tuning, On the first batch execution(first 5000 records) the query is taking only 5 mins, but on the consecutive batches it is consuming more time( more than 30 mins).
From the awr report I got the statistics as
Release : 11.2.0.2.0
Instance Efficiency Percentages (Target 100%)
Buffer Nowait %: 100.00 Redo NoWait %: 100.00
Buffer Hit %: 85.44 In-memory Sort %: 99.98
Library Hit %: 99.76 Soft Parse %: 99.15
Execute to Parse %: 88.91 Latch Hit %: 100.00
Parse CPU to Parse Elapsd %: 87.32 % Non-Parse CPU: 98.65
The buffer hit % is good. On each batch execution it is taking different set of records.
Top 5 Timed Foreground Events
Event Waits Time(s) Avg wait (ms) % DB time Wait Class
db file parallel read 120,485 42,540 353 89.60 User I/O
DB CPU 3,794 7.99
db file sequential read 145,074 606 4 1.28 User I/O
db file scattered read 70,030 556 8 1.17 User I/O
direct path write temp 12,423 21 2 0.04 User I/O
So the I/O is our main concern since that query contains one table with millions of records.
Host CPU (CPUs: 24 Cores: 24 Sockets: 4)
Load Average Begin Load Average End %User %System %WIO %Idle
1.40 1.45 0.6 0.3 3.7 99.0
Load is also normal.
From the Time model statistics , sql execute elapsed time is 98.27% of db time and only 7.99% is that of DB CPU.
Memory Statistics
Begin End
Host Mem (MB): 64,318.0 64,318.0
SGA use (MB): 30,720.0 30,720.0
PGA use (MB): 488.2 497.1
% Host Mem used for SGA+PGA: 48.52 48.54
Both the size of sga_max_size and sga_target are 32,212,254,720(32gb) bytes and that of
pga_aggregate target is 629,145,600(600mb)
from this it is evident that the memory is still available(so increase in memory size is not an option).
The sql statistics for that query shows like that
Elapsed Time (s) Executions Elapsed Time per Exec (s) %Total %CPU %IO SQL Id SQL Text
44,950.03 55 817.27 94.67 6.99 94.72 79dgmrxh4kv74 SELECT /*+ index(cdr_data cdr_...
I can't understand whether the problem is in the database side or with the query?
If the problem is with the query, then how it has been executed in 5 mins for the first batch ?
(all the batches are having 5000 records each).
And how can we reduce the db file parallel read ?
Your valuable advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Manoj Kumar N"db file parallel read" is likely to be associated with something like index prefetching.

Tune the SQL.
Review the execution plan.
Check whether the statistics are accurate.
Review whether the index hint (and others that we can't see) is appropriate. -
How to find problematic quries using AWR report
Hi All,
Somebody please help me how do I analyze the AWR report to find out problematic quires and the relevant recommendation for it.
It would be highly appreciable
Kind Regards
Shankarif youre running AWR means you got enterprise edition with the diagnostic licence pack add on. Substantial investment even in a minimal cpu configuration.
Reason Im asking is your question is opened ended. Sure you can look at the top consuming SQL statement, but that not might be what needs tuning so you want to waste your time trying to fix things that arent broken?
Have you got a DBA on site? -
Identify high workload from awr report
Hi All,
Yesterday, our well-tuned the batch ran very slowly. Most of jobs ran for 30 mins that usually cost 15-20mins. And the colletion of statistics took much longer than before.
After reading the awr report, I noticed that all top SQLs didn't belong to our batch. Most of them are MV refreshing and bitmap index building.
So I think it is this unexpected high workload who is the culprit of the bad performance. But I want to know which section of awr report can show this or let management accept it?
Best regards,
LeonHI,
And I noticed the CPU section in awr looks like:
Host CPU (CPUs: 24 Cores: 12 Sockets: 6)
Load Average Begin Load Average End %User %System %WIO %Idle
1.07 2.22 73.4 8.8 0.9 17.8
Instance CPU
%Total CPU %Busy CPU %DB time waiting for CPU (Resource Manager)
67.9 82.7 0.0 It seems that CPU is not 100% busy. So can I say the workload is not CPU-bound?
My RAC is 11.1 and have 4 nodes. But the service I used for my batch just contains two nodes.
In light of this, does the CPUs:24 here mean the total CPUs for all 4 nodes or the CPUs for this service (2 nodes)?
Best regards,
Leon -
Shared Pool Statistics - awr report -m 10.2.0.1
Hi,
I'm new to reading awr report and performance tuning.
I have the below in my statspack.
Do i need to increase my shared pool?
Any one can advise and explain "% Memory for SQL w/exec" and "% SQL with executions>1"
Shared Pool Statistics
Begin End
Memory Usage %: 95.78 97.71
% SQL with executions>1: 51.51 80.85
% Memory for SQL w/exec> 1: 67.88 82.46
thanks!user21123 wrote:
The sweet point for the shared pool Memory Usage % is at about ~70%-80% because of aging out. You are at ~90%. It would be advisable to increase the shared pool, but if you're using 10g SGA_TARGET and SGA_MAX_SIZE, then that might require increasing those parameters. It depends how your AWR report looks for the Buffer Cache.
What makes you think this ?
In an OLTP system you hope for 100% shareable SQL, and correct allocation for the other objects, which would lead to 100% usage. In realistic terms, you're likely to get a few percent (which is often the shared_pool_reserved) free because there's a constant turn-over of non-shareable SQL.
If you're always seeing 70% - 80%, then there are several scenraios that might explain the figure. One is that you've simply made shared pool a bit too big. At the opposite extreme you might be constantly flushing 20%-30% of the material from the shared pool because it has become so fragmented that you have to clear a lot of garbage to create a small amount of contiguous space.
The best guideline to follow is to check whether you appear to be losing a significant amount of time on libarary cache and shared pool latches, using up an undesirable amount of CPU on parse time, see lots of reloads (without corresponding invalidations) in v$librarycache.
Without further information, we really can't say how good or bad the situation is. In fact, it's possible that the information that +"50% of your SQL has been shared, 50% has been single use"+ is a possible indicator that the shared_pool_size is too small, and we are filling the excess space with garbage rather than keeping the garbage (and library cache search time) to a minimum.
I would be interested to hear the thinking behind your suggestion, though.

Hi All,
DB - 10.2.0.4.0
I ned to generate AWR report for 30 minute time intervel. For expample, if I need to generate AWR report for the timmig 03:00 PM to 03:30 PM, DO I need to create snapshot manually at 3 pm and 3:30 pm.
exec dbms_workload_repository.create_snapshot(); at 03:00 PM
exec dbms_workload_repository.create_snapshot(); at 03:30 PM
Also, is there any way, if the current time is 01:00 pm and can we create snapshot for 03:00PM and 03:30 PM?
hare krishnaHi Hare,
http://www.dba-oracle.com/oracle10g_tuning/t_generating_awr_report.htm
The final AWR report can be built by using the PL/SQL API provided in the dbms_workload_repository package.
Two procedures that generate AWR reports are awr_report_text and awr_report_html . These procedures generate the AWR report for the specified snapshot range in TEXT or HTML formats, respectively. The following script shows one way of retrieving the AWR text report for the particular snapshot range:
SELECT
output
FROM
TABLE
(dbms_workload_repository.awr_report_text
(37933856,1,2900,2911 )
If you want complete working scripts to generate AWR reports, I have them in the code depot of my Oracle Tuning book:
http://www.rampant-books.com/t_oracle_tuning_book.htm
Hope this helps . . .

Diff b/w snapshot baselines and AWR reports
Hi All,
Can anyone tell what is the difference b/w snapshot baselines and AWR reports. I have gone through couple of articles and i feel both are same, however given different names.
Am I correct?
ThanksAWR report is a report comparing the pair of snapshots and thus giving you the details of what has happened between that inerval!
The baselines is that "interesting time period" which you define telling to oracle and is used by oracle to compute the sql response tiime of your db with it in the subsequent timings. So both are completely different actually!

How can I have a collective AWR report for RAC database in 10gR2 and 11gR1?
Plz correct me here
awrrpt.sql takes the snapshot at the instance level and incase we have 5 instances we have to take 5 awr reports for a particular period.correct???
If above is true ,any wayout to collect a single collective AWR report for RAC database which includes information on all the instances in Oracle 10g R2 or 11gR1 ?
Thanks in advance
GaganI have never come across a way for this. though I can n't say it is not there.
But I guess it may not be feasible too becuase as we know the current AWR report contains data which is specific for one instance.
Various hit ratios, top events, instance effeciency reports.... what not ..
It would be really nice to see something is a new format where it lists values from each instance in a single report.. I guess such a thing Does not exiist as of now. -
