APEX Meetup at ODTUG

Hello,
For those folks going to ODTUG, we (Monty, Bharat and a few others) are trying to arrange an APEX Meetup (if you've never been to one before it's very casual, usually in a bar - drinks and good chat).
I posted a quick blog post -
http://jes.blogs.shellprompt.net/2009/06/03/apex-meetup-at-odtug-2009/
if you fancy coming to the meetup can you post a quick comment on there just so we know some numbers and what day suits most people.
Thanks,
John.

• How to uploade multiple files in Apex

Hi All,
I went through the documnet to up;oad the files in apex which is wroking fine perfectly.
But how do we upload multile files at a time.
If we observe here we are using P2_File_name as one of the browser filed, similarly i have created three more browser buttons with names a s P3_file_name and P4_file_name
so how do chnage the proces to handle multiple files to uplaod at a ttime.
Here is the process i have followed.
IF ( :P2_FILE_NAME is not null ) THEN
INSERT INTO oehr_file_subject(id,NAME, SUBJECT, BLOB_CONTENT, MIME_TYPE)
SELECT ID,:P2_FILE_NAME,:P2_SUBJECT,blob_content,mime_type
FROM APEX_APPLICATION_FILES
WHERE name = :P2_FILE_NAME;
DELETE from APEX_APPLICATION_FILES WHERE name = :P2_FILE_NAME;
END IF;
Abd for downloading the file i have used a proceudre
create or replace PROCEDURE download_my_file(p_file in number) AS
v_mime VARCHAR2(48);
v_length NUMBER;
v_file_name VARCHAR2(2000);
Lob_loc BLOB;
BEGIN
SELECT MIME_TYPE, BLOB_CONTENT, name,DBMS_LOB.GETLENGTH(blob_content)
INTO v_mime,lob_loc,v_file_name,v_length
FROM oehr_file_subject
WHERE id = p_file;
-- set up HTTP header
-- use an NVL around the mime type and
-- if it is a null set it to application/octect
-- application/octect may launch a download window from windows
owa_util.mime_header( nvl(v_mime,'application/octet'), FALSE );
-- set the size so the browser knows how much to download
htp.p('Content-length: ' || v_length);
-- the filename will be used by the browser if the users does a save as
htp.p('Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="'||replace(replace(substr(v_file_name,instr(v_file_name,'/')+1),chr(10),null),chr(13),null)|| '"');
-- close the headers
owa_util.http_header_close;
-- download the BLOB
wpg_docload.download_file( Lob_loc );
end download_my_file;
Thanks,
Anoo..

• ODTUG 2006

With ODTUG Kaleidoscope 2006 right around the corner, I thought it would be interesting to see who from the Forums will be attending.
For those who don't know, ODTUG is the Oracle Development Tools Users Group. Their annual conference will be in my backyard this year - Washington, DC, at the Wardman Park Marriott, just south of the National Zoo. The conference runs from 17-JUN through 21-JUN.
Hope to see some of you there!
Thanks,
- Scott -

Hi All,
I will be attending.
It will be great to meet some of you in person. We can get together to share ApEx insights, tips and tricks etc. It should be fun.
Cheers,
Patrick Cimolini

• ODTUG - Hyperion SIG

Below is a copy of a letter that can be found on the ODTUG Hyperion SIG site (www.ODTUG.com), please take a minute to read when you have a chance.
Thanks
August 1, 2009
Dear ODTUG Members,
My name is Gary Crisci and I am the new president of the Oracle Development Tools User Group - Hyperion Special Interest Group. I wanted to take a moment of your time to introduce myself and the rest of the board and tell you a little bit about the ODTUG Hyperion SIG and what our plans are for this year.
Our SIG board is made up of some of the most talented individuals in this field. Angela Wilcox of JC Penney is our Secretary and Cameron Lackpour of InterRel is our website coordinator. Other members of the board are Doug Bliss of Ace Cash Express, Natalie Delemar of Randstad, Quinlan Eddy of Star Analytics, Jeff McAhren of HealthMarkets, Edward Roske of InterRel, Tim Tow of Applied OLAP, and John Weimar of Kerdock Consulting. I’m sure many of you recognize most of these names and would agree we have some of the best Hyperion talent on our board. We are also privileged to have Al Marciante of Oracle as a board advisor.
As president of the Hyperion SIG, my primary role is to lead the committee that organizes the Hyperion content for the Kaleidoscope conference and this is something the board and I are already working on. Kaleidoscope 2009 was a huge success. We were one of the only conferences this year to increase our attendance despite one of the worst economic climates in recent history. This is a testament to the quality of the speakers, presentations, and training featured at the Kaleidoscope conference. If you have not already checked it out, I would recommend going to the Kaleidoscope website (http://www.odtugkaleidoscope.com/) and having a look around. Our goal is to make Kaleidoscope 2010 an even bigger success, with more speakers, more presentation tracks, more vendors, and more attendees. Kaleidoscope has become the conference for Essbase developers, and as an Essbase developer I can assure you this will remain one of the primary focuses of the conference. However, the board and I plan to expand our scope further next year to provide more content for other areas of the Hyperion suite such as Planning, HFM/Enterprise, and our new friends at OBI. As developers, many of us on the board have worked on financial consolidation projects and recognize the development efforts that go into an HFM roll out. The developers that work on these projects are talented technicians and deserve a place to network and expand their skill set. We will provide them this opportunity at Kaleidoscope 2010.
I would like to ask all of you to start thinking about what you would like to see at Kaleidoscope next year and encourage you to reach out to me and the rest of the SIG board. The Kaleidoscope conference is your conference and I hope you will participate in helping us make it the best it can be. This invitation goes out to all members and non-members as well as vendors. In addition to building up user attendance at the conference, I have also made it a goal to increase vendor participation this year. So if you are a consultant or vendor, please reach out to us with your ideas.
Beyond the Kaleidoscope conference, one of my other major goals as president is to increase our SIG’s membership. If you are not a member of the ODTUG – Hyperion SIG, I would like to invite you to visit our SIG website (http://www.odtug.com/apex/f?p=500:320:0::::P320_SIG_ID:121) and consider becoming a member. ODTUG offers two membership types. There are paid members and associate members (associate membership is free). Paid members get the benefit of premium content and discounts to ODTUG events such as Kaleidoscope. Becoming a member of an industry group is one of the best things you can do for your career. I have personally gained so much from my industry affiliations. Beyond the networking opportunities and access to industry information, it is also something valuable to add to your resume. Participation in an industry group shows a dedication to your craft and represents you as a serious professional. I encourage all of you to join us if you are not currently a member. Additionally, please join the ODTUG Linkedin group (http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=1796201) as another way to be kept in the loop on communications with the board.
Lastly, I would like to take the opportunity to thank those of you who voted me back onto the board this year, and I would like to thank the Hyperion SIG board for entrusting me with the role of president. I consider it a privilege to serve on this board and in this capacity. I would also like to thank our outgoing president Edward Roske. Edward has committed himself, and his company, to the ODTUG Hyperion SIG in a way few individuals do. His tireless efforts have led to Kaleidoscope being the premier Hyperion conference and I can only hope to do as good a job as he has done. Lastly, I would like to thank the ODTUG board of directors for their overwhelming support of our group. ODTUG has stepped up in a way no other organization has to support the Hyperion community and their support has been unwavering. They have given us the opportunity to bring our culture and integrate it with their unique philosophy of how a user base community should be served, with an emphasis on training, and focus on the development of the individual. The enthusiasm demonstrated by ODTUG for Hyperion would lead you to believe they have been working with us for many years. They have truly welcomed us into their family and we appreciate it.
I would like to thank you for your participation in the ODTUG Hyperion SIG; our members are what make our group the best in the industry. Please do not hesitate to reach out to myself or any other member of the board if there is anything we can do for you.
Best regards,

I love K-scope! It really has been the best conference for developing my knowledge and talent with Essbase. Thanks to Edward, Gary, and the rest of the Hyperion SIG board for all of your work.

• b The nicest APEX app / feature /b

Hello,
At ODTUG I'm doing the APEX vs ADF Shoot-out, together with Lucas Jellema.
The last presentation Lucas and I did last year in the Netherlands. We decided to change some things in the presentation. One of them is to include "the nicest app or features in both environments".
So, I thought to ask the community what they think I should show.
Currently the list I thought to chose of:
* Out of the box in APEX: from raw Data to Application and Interactive Reports
* "Web 2.0" extensions in APEX: for ex. ExtJS and Dhtmlx
* Integration with Webservices, Fusion and SOA
* Extending E-business suite with APEX
(although I don't have the Oracle Applications Suite running on my laptop, so it will be hard to show)
* Integration with SQL Developer
I've about 15 mins to show the coolest, nicest features or application around, build in APEX. So it's not necessary to show things in dept or explain how to do them.
What features do YOU think make APEX incredible? Feel free to send me some screenshots or even nicer real demo sites or an application export I can show.
I know a lot of the applications we build are "internal" only, but if you could make a subset of it to just show the cool feature, that's already fine. If you just want to share what you think would be cool to show, just add a comment ... there might be a chance I already did some testing with it.
See also: http://dgielis.blogspot.com/2008/06/nicest-apex-appfeatures.html
Let's show the ADF guys something ;-)
Regards,
Dimitri

-- http://apexblogs.info/

Hi Peter,
I have a very nice anecdote about 1. APEX for Dummies!
In DG Tournament there was a problem, people couldn't login... but I didn't have an internet connection at that time and as people had to bet on the games it had to be fixed asap.
So I called my brother (as he was one of the only persons I could reach) and asked him to follow my instructions. In 5 minutes it was fixed! He's a teacher in sports, so NOT technical at all. He could do everything with his browser, no need to redeploy or have tools on his pc. I should blog about it, but then I'm not sure if the ADF guys read it, they will shoot at that ;-)
I don't want to stress 1 too much, as APEX is/was seen like that before and the marketing is also done like that by certain people, but as you also say in 2. APEX is very powerful. I see it as a fit for a lot of people; from business people who have not many technical skills to the guru developers.

Dimitri

Dimitri,
I'm looking forward to your presentation at ODTUG in Daytona. Are you planning another meet-up for the APEX crowd at the conference? If so, please keep us informed, as it is great to put names to the faces that you see out on this forum and elsewhere.

• APEX 3.1 - Cache of Workspace Images or Static Files

Hi,
I attended the ODTUG Conference and they mentioned that in 3.1 Images and Static files (uploaded as shared components) are now cached. Where in the documentation does it state this? Can you configure the cache settings?
Thank you,
Martin

Hi Joel,
>> See....if you came to one of these conferences like OOW or ODTUG, I could …
Yeah, rubbed it in, why don’t you :)
>> It has nothing to do with the upload procedure …
That was my mistake. I meant the downloading/delivery procedure.
>> I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "free files"
By “free” files, I meant data files that were uploaded to the database, like scanned documents etc., and not the classic static files like JavaScript, CSS, or the firm logo image.
Now, with 3.1 native support of BLOB, and the rumors that your team is working on a revised version of the document library package, things might be simpler for issues like (simple) content management.
>> Please let me know if this does not make sense.
Tyler post came right on time, to fulfill your pseudocode explanation. After reading Tyler post, I better understand what you meant, and how I can achieve it. At first, I thought that all the HTTP header stuff id done for you, by some built-in or Oracle supplied package, but now I understand it’s the developer responsibly.
One more thing about Tyler post, which was published prior to version 3.1. He mentioned the need to add some specific entries to the DAD, in order to utilize this technique:
“If you’re using Oracle HTTP Server (Apache + mod_plsql), add the following lines to your Database Access Descriptor (DAD), then bounce OHS to apply your changes:
PlsqlCGIEnvironmentList HTTP_IF_NONE_MATCH
PlsqlCGIEnvironmentList IF_MODIFIED_SINCE “
Is this still the case with 3.1? I don’t remember reading about these specific entries in the installation documentation. My current DAD don’t includes these entries, and still it seems like the caching of static files is working (I tested against apex.oracle.com).
Thanks and regards,
Arie.

• APEX 3.0 Training Class

Does anyone have any information on when Training Classess will be offered?
Thanks,
BT

Hi Bob,
Do you mean ones run by Oracle or by others? I have no idea about the Oracle ones, but there is currently some APEX 3.0 training being run at ODTUG (which I assume you're not at), also there is some APEX 3.0 advanced training in Brussels in September being run by myself and Dimitri Gielis.
There are more details on the APEX Events page -

• Who's using APEX for their corporate website?

Hi,
I'm trying to convince a prospective client that APEX is the way to go for the redevelopment of their corporate website. They would like to see some examples of other organisation's websites that have been implemented in APEX.
If you know of any I'd be grateful if you could post the URL here.
Cheers,
Andrew.

Hello Andrew,
Google on : inurl:"apex/f" 8080 and you'll get over 5000 hits of websites using the standard APEX setup. A lot of them need username/passwords, but some of them are public like:

• Apex Blogs Aggregator .... died ?

Dear All,
What happen with great Apex Blogs Aggregator ?
Looks like dying ....
After it moved to ODTUG, it never working as before.
Looks like it killed slowly.
I know, it is free service and I should complaint ...
but it is a place to see all Apex experts and gurus sharing the Apex idea, tips, tricks, techniques and news for beginners like myself.

Hi Tobin,
while you wait, would you like to try this one?
http://www.quiquici.com
It's a full-fledged apex-based social reader and bookmarking tool.
I have been using it in the past 4 years and I find it very efficient, although it is not yet in a final shape (some secondary pages are not as "polished" as others).
Basically you can create your own apex-blogs aggregator, you can disregard blogs you are not interested in or add new ones on an individual basis.
It also imports google reader subscriptions (exported as an XML archive) to make life easier for users migrating from there.
For best results I recommend using Firefox, Chrome and Safari are working just fine most of the time, except in a couple of situations that I still have to investigate.
Once you are registered, I'll be glad to help you with setting up your profile and explain the main features.

• Book resources for ApEx

I'm a database developer who has played around some w/ ApEx and
who has zero experience w/ HTML. Our group is looking into moving
a somewhat complex Forms app to ApEx, and I know I'll need to
be doing more than just the basics in ApEx.
I've found this forum very helpful, but want to get some good books
in front of me.
Couple of questions:
What books do you recommend for ApEx?
Would it be wise for me to get an HTML book? If so,
I'd love recommendations.
When is the book Pro Oracle Application Express (Scott S and John S's
book) actually going to be available? The date keeps getting
pushed back! Because of Scott's incredible knowledge of ApEx,
this is the book I really want... but don't know if it'll be available
in time!
Thanks much,
Carol

Carol,
I'm sitting in the airport right now waiting to fly out to ODTUG, so don't have time for a 'full' reply to this, but if you want to drop me a mail ([email protected]) I'll see what I can do for you (no promises of course).
The date keeps getting pushed back! I know ;) Guilty as charged...but it is coming I promise.
Because of Scott's incredible knowledge of ApEx, this is the book I really wantNot sure if you mean Scott S or me (or a combination of both!), if it's me then I'm thinking of changing my name, as it'll be the third time this week someone has called me 'Scott' (and about the 1,000,000th time this year ;).
Thanks,
John.

• Intelligence or Defense Community Apex Usage

I was wondering if anyone in the Intelligence or Defense community is using Apex. We are meeting some resistance because some people think this is "new" technology. An Oracle Consultant actually told the government that apex is NOT robust thus we are getting pushback. Also, has anyone got an application using mod_plsql or apex accredited? If you could please email me at [email protected] if you do not wish to post your usage on this forum. I would greatly appretiate it.
Thanks,
Rob

While I'm not at liberty to say names, I can confirm that APEX is being used in a number of different "Defense & Intelligence" agencies here in the US, based on personal experiences with such clients.
Something a little more in the public domain from the agenda for the ODTUG Kaleidoscope APEX Symposium:
Managing the Army’s Enterprise Real Property Planning with Oracle APEX
Bharat Pappu and Brian Duffy, VISTA Technology Services, Inc.
9:00 AM - 10:00 AM
The Army’s real property planning system supports thousands of users worldwide. The application is a critical component of the Army’s mission in managing its buildings, utilities, and land resources. It is used every day to support planning, budgetary, and spending decisions involving a real property portfolio with a replacement value of $263 billion.
When the time for the move from client-server to Web came, VISTA evaluated different technologies and selected APEX based on its out-of-the-box capabilities consisting of solid UI code, complete support for all of Oracle’s performance capabilities, security, scalability, and hooks into maintainable table-driven business logic. VISTA was particularly impressed with the speed that an interface could be assembled with APEX, it's flexibility to integrate technologies (like AJAX and dynamic HTML and third-party tools), and its rapid response ability to support functional design changes.
VISTA re-engineered and is rebuilding the application in record time. The new system prototype is in place and growing in world-wide use. Full deployment will be completed by December 2008. This presentation will outline the process that VISTA undertook in both selecting APEX and building the actual solution – which took months, not years as the Army had anticipated.
Thanks,
- Scott -
