B/U and Transferring Mac Data

I have 2 macbooks. One 12" G4 and an intel pro. I am currently backing up the pro to an ext drive with Time Machine. I then need to do a "soft wipe" to the pro so that I can transfer the data from the g4 to the pro. I will then be doing a soft wipe to the g4.
My intent with a soft wipe is to keep all of the apps but delete all unnecessary data such as photos, music, and other files. I would also like to change the user names (home folder) as each computer is going to a different person. Do I need the Mac OS install disc for this? If so, do you know if any intel Leopard disc will work for the pro and any Tiger disc will work for the g4, or do I need the machine specific discs?
Will Time Machine back up the pro HD sufficiently so that all of it's info is duplicated on the ext drive? Of course, I can check to make certain, but there are lots of files. A matching memory count, I assume, would confirm this?. The info pane of the pro HD shows that 109.77GB is used, however the Time Machine window shows that it is only backing up 104.34GB. Is everything, in fact copied over or is it missing something? The ext drive will be going to the original owner of the pro so that they can take any data they want/need and I want to be certain this will be possible.
To transfer the data from the g4 to the pro, I intend to put the pro in target mode and copy over via firewire 400. I assume ethernet would be faster? I just don't have an extra ethernet cable.

Dangermouse0:
Thanks. That is helpful. Here is how I suggest you proceed.
• Backup MacBook Pro to external HDD. Since you only need the data you can simply backup the Users Folder using SuperDuper.
• Instead of wiping anything use this procedure to set up a new user and directory on MacBook Pro. You can later log in as new admin user and delete old user.
• Once new user is setup use the procedure outlined in this thread to transfer information from PowerBook G4 to MacBook Pro.
• Use procedure in first step to create a new account in PowerBook G4.
• Move data from backup to PowerBook G4.
Note: You can delete the original accounts either after setting up new accounts, or wait until it is all done. The value of waiting is that the data will be intact until you are done, just in case you need to recover anything. However, that will depend upon whether you have sufficient disk capacity to accommodate both accounts. If there is not sufficient space, you will need to delete the account immediately after setting up the new account.
Please do post back with further questions/comments.

  • Upgrading HDD on new MBP 15" and transfering all Data and settings from 2011 model to 2012 one

    Hi all,
I have just purchased a new 2012 MBP 15" (Non-retina) machine as well as a hybrid 750GB drive from Seagate and 16GB RAM upgrade from Crucial. Both machines are running the latest versions of Lion. What I would like to do is the following:
Upgrade the HDD & RAM in the new 2012 MBP - I think it is the same procedure as the 2011 model (which I have already done using Carbon Copy Cloner)
Transfer all the data, settings, programmes files, docs etc to the new 2012 MBP and new drive
Q1. Would I have to clone the current HDD in the 2012 MBP with the new hybrid one first and then install into the machine before transferring the data from the 2011 machine?
Q2. Or - Could I just clone the current HDD in the 2011 model using CCC to the new Hybrid HDD and then instal it into the new 2012 MBP?
Whats the best and safest way to achieve this please? Any advice very welcome!
    Many Thanks

So, everything went fairly well. It started out looking like it was going to take 2.5 hours, but it ended up taking about 5-6 (I think - I went to sleep).
A couple of observations - at first I didn't see where it restored everything, but I later saw that when I logged out that it had created my user account as a separate login.
Some things didn't transfer - most everything did, but there were a few things with my Parallels VM that did not. I have to get to the bottom of that. It did make me re-register once I launched it.
    On the hardware specifically:
    1. I am not yet noticing the performance bump that I thought I would going to the i5 processor - seemed snappy when I first had it on with OS only - but so far not noticeably faster than my Core 2 Duo 2.4.
    2. battery - way too early to tell, but I am hoping the battery needs time to condition itself and figure out who it is (battery life was my #1 reason for buying this) - right now I am on battery power and have 79% remaining or 2hrs. 2 hours??!! This is supposed to be a 8-9 hour battery. Hoping time works this out. Brightness if only up about 20%, on wifi, keybaord backlighting fairly dim. Nothing coming over from my old machine would have affected this, would it have? (I do know that when the machine was empty with just the OS on it, it was reading about 8 hrs remaining). So much for living on the edge and going to the office without my power adapter today.
    3. Heat - my 13" was not hot on the bottom - this one is - on the back left part of the unit. Reminding me of my Powerbook G4. Not very lap comfortable. ??
    Any thoughts?

  • Activating a vi on a remote computer (and transferring the data back) via a TCP/IP connection

    Hi all,
I need some help in creating a vi that can be activated remotely using a TCP/IP connection. Can this be done. If it can, I have a vi (that would be on the remote computer) that manipulates the data as required and saves the data file. While the connection is open, I need to retrieve the data file from the remote computer. Can anybody help, I am running labview 6.
    Thanks
    Ridge

    Ridge,
This is what the "i" in LabVIEW 6i stands for. Internet applications (collection of data through IP) was a basis for the release of 6i. This is not only a capability, but is built in as easy to do.
Unfortunately, I have little experience in this arena. I have built TCP/IP client server relationships, but never remotely controlled a VI over IP, so I can't advise you.
    I would suggest the following:
Look up remote VIs on NI's website, specifically in Application Notes, and examples/downloads.
Check the examples that ship with LabVIEW.
Look for other documentation within LabVIEW (search through help).
Contact your local sales rep for some assistance.
I do remember seeing some kind of demo about this a long time ago, and remember
it being extremely easy. However; I never had use for it, so I never did anything with it.
You should have the ability to get started very quickly.
Good luck, and let us know how you do.

  • Help!  I transferred the data from my old Macbook pro with some success, but now my new Macbook Air contents think they are the remote disc and that the old Mac Pro is the hard drive.  What did I do and how do I fix it?

I transferred the data from my old 2006 MacBook Pro 17".  Thanks for the help on that.  I thought that I was doing it right.  Used a backup hard drive and time machine.  Problem:  Now my new macbook air thinks it is the old machine and that the remote disc is the mb air.  Clicks want to take things to mobile me instead of iCloud, old applications launch instead of the new ones.  How do I fix the mess I have made?  Like I said before,  I am a software user and don't really know what I am doing when I start into the guts of the software, but I am able to learn.  Thanks for any help.

After you move the library you need to open iTunes by first depressing the OPTION key then launching iTunes. You will be given a choice of which library to use. This can then be made a permanent change, if you wish, in the Advanced section of iTunes preferences.

  • Is it possible to preserve creation/mod dates when transfering Mac-PC-Mac?

    Hi there
I tried researching the following problem on-line but couldn't find anything helpful so was hoping someone else might know something helpful.
Historically I have always used PCs so until last year I didn't own a Mac, although I use them at work. This means I have a huge amount of files and data stored on external hard drives. I now run Snow Leopard but also run Windows 7 in inside VirtualBox because not all software I own is available for the Mac.
The problem I have is that Snow Leopard and Windows handle file creation and modification dates differently. So if I save a file on my Mac HFS+ disk in Snow Lepoard, Windows cannot read the dates correctly.
I have MacFuse running in Snow Lepoard in order to access my NTFS+ disks but saving files on there still doesn't resolve the issue. Recently I created network drive shares to my NTFS disks in Windows 7 so I could access them. However when I copy files from my Digital Camera on to them, it changes the creation date whilst keeping the modification date unchanged. I use the creation dates to title my MPEG4 AVI videos so I cannot afford the dates to change. If those contained metadata, similar to EXIF data, it wouldn't be such a problem but they don't.
Does anyone know a way of safely transferring files or a program which converts files between Mac and PC. I know of MacDisk but would allow resolve the date issue or simply place files on a HFS+ disk with the windows creation date format. Thus rendering the dates wrong when used in the Mac. I just need a conversion tool between the two. I can't use FAT32 because I also work with digital video from time to time.
    Kind regards
    Infobleep

    So to understand your issue.
You have lots of old drives running with the NTFS file system.
Now that you have a MAC you want to keep using these drives in the same way.
The issue is that the MAC is writing the day you copied the content onto the hard drive in NTFS external drives as the creation date?
    Is this correct?
If so, I believe that you are trying to do a Windows thing in a MAC world....
I am using Parallels and VM ware. I cannot see any problem with VMware and the file creation dates in either MAC or XP. I have created new files in each, crossed over to the other operating system and modified the files. Both files are correctly displaying the content the way they need to be with the correct modified and created dates. The VMware and MAC OS use the mac file system as a base.
I would try to save the digital photos to the external drives while in windows. If you need to use the MAC when doing this I personally would copy off all the old PC files onto my mac and then reformat the external drive as a MAC file system drive. Then copy the files back to the external drive from the MAC. If you are using VMware this drive can be useable by windows as a "shared folder".
If you acknowledge the external USB drive as a USB device in WMware it will of course be in MAC file system format so the new formatted drive will only be viewable in the Computer Management application (WinXP ) And it will not show up as a drive.
To get around this I created a new shared folder in the VMware (Settings -> System Settings -> Sharing) and just simply chose the entire portable drive as a shared folder. Works like a charm. Now WinXP can use the VMware Tools app and properly translate the file content over the the MAC drive. I just created a few files and don't see any issue with the file creation dates.
MAC doesn't use NTFS for its file system and since NTFS is a windows technology, probably cannot? If anything the software that is allowing you to write to the NTFS drive is probably emulating something and that piece of software is at fault. I have an old NTFS drive and don't remember being able to write to it natively from the MAC OS.... In fact my new 1TB drive was purchased to allow me to transfer all my old data off the legacy drive so that I can update it to the new MAC world
Though even more then this... I personally never rely on something so fallible as a computer maintained "created on" or "modified on" concept as these are subjective. As of the new millennium file names have been basically unbound. I would instead append the date and time to my file name as follows.
    201007310300 Some Name of a File.jpg
this way no matter what is done with the file you still have the all important creation date.
An apple script should be able to be created to look at the creation dates on the files as they are stored on the mac and append the date to the file name. (basic shell scripting)
And if this doesn't work for you, perhaps the Linux file system is a better option? I believe that MAC will play nicer with Linux. And I know that there are software drivers to read a linux drive on a PC. Again, though, creation dates can easily change and are no guarantee as to when a file was really created.
So to conclude. All of my external drives are in MAC FS. If I need to copy files to a PC I can use my new 64GB flash drive. (I mean that is a HDD all in to itself!) If you are stuck in NTFS land, save the files via your Windows emulation.

  • Transferring midi data from Atari to Mac.

Like many of the "older" hands here, I started sequencing on an Atari ST1040 and still have many old DD floppy-disks full of my songs in the old Emagic Notator (_.SON) format. Well I held on to the old Atari and it still works well but what I would love to do is get those songs into Logic Pro 8.
What I have found out and done so far is...
         - successfully exported a Notator song file to a midi file on the Atari.
         - successfully connected the Atari to my MacBook (using midi lead from Atari midi out, through M-Audio midisport USB into MacBook USB port.
         - successfully established communication between the two computers and transferred one midi file, ending up with a single midi track in Logic, containing (I think) most of the information, but all crammed into a single track.
What I haven't been able to do is enable proper sync between the two (I simply set Logic bpm to that of the Atari, pressed "record" in Logic and then "play" on the Atari). I can't seem to find this sync setting in Logic.
I am also unsure as to what to set the new track to in Logic as it seems to work in a limited way, whether I select "External Midi Instrument" or "External Sequencer". Common sense seems to suggest the latter, since Notator is indeed an external sequencer as far as the Mac is concerned.
So what I'm really trying to achieve here is:
         1. Proper sync so that the timing doesn't wander during transfer
         2. The same number of tracks in my original midi file, transferred  into Logic. (I tried enabling the right number of tracks, even setting the individual midi channels but it just record onto the first track and ignores the rest.)
Any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong, what I need to do now or any help or advice as to how to get this to work properly would be most welcome.
    Cheers!

I think you'd be better off just transferring the .son data file in it's raw form.  Anyway to get that midi info onto a more modern storage device and then load it into Logic that way?
I'm not sure what kind of useful data interfaces are possible on the Atari.
Original Emagic dudes probably have some suggestions as this would have been somewhat common a decade ago.
The midi porting seems to create a jumble rather than your segregated parts.

  • Created a movie in IMOVIE and transferred it to dvd but cannot get it to play on my dvd player.  i downloaded the free Burn program since i don't have idvd on my new mac  the dvd comes up disk error or cannot read

created a movie in IMOVIE and transferred it to dvd but cannot get it to play on my dvd player.  i downloaded the free Burn program since i don't have idvd on my new mac  the dvd comes up disk error or cannot read.  I am using a dvd-r dvd and my dvd player says that it uses this type of dvd.  Any suggestions.  I spoke to an Apple Support person who helped me burn the dvd but it still didn't work...help???

There's a difference between a data DVD, and a DVD-Video.  I believe you made a data DVD, which can't be played in a video player.  The Burn feature of the Finder can't author a DVD-V, just data discs.
I assume you made a Project, and put clips from your Event Library into the Project.  But then, how did you output your Project, using the SHARE menu?
When I pull down iMovie '11s SHARE menu, "iDVD..." is one of the options.  It's the job of iDVD to make the menu that appears when you insert a DVD into your player (that says the title, and chapters, and extras, etc.).  You need software that will made a DVD-V disc.  Lacking that, you might be able to go to Share/Export Movie... or Share/Export using QuickTime... to get your video into a format that software like Roxio's Toast could burn.

  • HT4889 When I transferred my data from a 128GB Macbook Air to 256GB Macbook Air (brand new version as of 9/1/13) I end up with 188GB used!   I add up the size of Users, System, Library and Applications and it comes to 90GB.  What am I missing?

When I transferred my data from a 128GB Macbook Air to 256GB Macbook Air (brand new version as of 9/1/13) I end up with 188GB used!   I add up the size of Users, System, Library and Applications and it comes to 90GB.  What am I missing?  How did I "use" up so much space in migrating from one Mac to another?

Did you use the Setup Assistant available at the beginning of the new machine's setup process? Or did you use Migration Assistant later after you had set up the new machine?
If you used Migration Assistant, you generally wind up with two accounts (the new one you set up on the new machine plus the old one you ported over) - that may explain your excessive use of space. In that case, you can either manually combine/remove all unnecessary duplicate files, or you can start over by using Command + R, wiping your drive, and downloading the OS. Once it's downloaded, use the Setup Assistant offered at the beginning of the install/setup process.

  • Phone is connecting and transfering data in the ba...

Today at work my Nokia 6710 did start to transfer data in the background without my interaction. I was typing a sms while the symbol for data transfer below the 3G lit up. Did a quick check in the menu->settings->connectivity->Conn.mgr.  Yes, one active connection was sending and receiving data, small amounts 3-4kb, then idle.
I ended the connection in the Conn.mgr. Closed all the apps in the phone and waited a minute. Then it started one new connection in the background again! Same procedure, checked and closed it...! This did not stop, every time the phone started a new connection after a minute?
I did try to find what could cause this, but no success. What is going on, any ideas for what to check?
I finally deleted my  3G access point in menu->settings->settings->connection->destinations->internet
This did stopp the phone from connecting and transfering data.
Back home I connected to my WiFi at home, used the browser and closed the connection. Guess what, the phone did now connect via the WiFi in the background doing exactly the same type of small data transfer - without asking!?
What is this? I downloaded the latest F-Secure mobile version to check for virus, but nothing, it was clean.
I did shut down the phone, will not use it until I can stop these unwanted connections and transfers. Please help.

Finally I found the reason for these data transfers. The upgrade of the mentioned files did have something to do with all of this, but the removal of the files did not help.
So, I did go through all the settings in again for Connections and the setting for Share Video were set On...? Turning this setting Off did stop the background data transfers.
Problem solved perhaps. But I still wonder why the Share Video setting did start sending data while the phone was not in use? A bug? A virus? A hacker trying to activate the webcam?

  • How can I use my external hard drive on both pc and mac, but also being able to use it to back up my mac data?

I want to be able to transfer some of my files from my laptop to my macbook, but not all of them. I have a NTFS external hard drive and I have heard about reformatting it so that it can read/write across both systems, but can I still use this hard drive to back up the data on my macbook? If I can, how should I go about reformatting the hard drive?

    FORMAT TYPES
    FAT32 (File Allocation Table)
Read/Write FAT32 from both native Windows and native Mac OS X.
    Maximum file size: 4GB.
    Maximum volume size: 2TB
You can use this format if you share the drive between Mac OS X and Windows computers and have no files larger than 4GB.
    NTFS (Windows NT File System)
    Read/Write NTFS from native Windows.
Read only NTFS from native Mac OS X
To Read/Write/Format NTFS from Mac OS X, here are some alternatives:
For Mac OS X 10.4 or later (32 or 64-bit), install Paragon (approx $20) (Best Choice for Lion)
Native NTFS support can be enabled in Snow Leopard and Lion, but is not advisable, due to instability.
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support NTFS
    Maximum file size: 16 TB
    Maximum volume size: 256TB
You can use this format if you routinely share a drive with multiple Windows systems.
HFS+ ((((MAC FORMAT)))) (Hierarchical File System, a.k.a. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Don't use case-sensitive)
    Read/Write HFS+ from native Mac OS X
Required for Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! backups of Mac internal hard drive.
To Read HFS+ (but not Write) from Windows, Install HFSExplorer
    Maximum file size: 8EiB
    Maximum volume size: 8EiB
You can use this format if you only use the drive with Mac OS X, or use it for backups of your Mac OS X internal drive, or if you only share it with one Windows PC (with MacDrive installed on the PC)
    EXFAT (FAT64)
Supported in Mac OS X only in 10.6.5 or later.
Not all Windows versions support exFAT.
    exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table)
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support exFAT
    Maximum file size: 16 EiB
    Maximum volume size: 64 ZiB
You can use this format if it is supported by all computers with which you intend to share the drive.  See "disadvantages" for details.

  • I want to use my 1TB Seagate Hard drive for time machine and transferring files from Mac to PC.

For about a year I've been using my 1TB external hard drive for only time machine. To be honest, it wasn't until today that I tried to connect my hard drive to a PC and realize it isn't compatible. I read about partitioning the hard drive so that it can work both for time machine and transferring files between pc and mac. I'm not what you would call tech savvy, so I was wondering if I can get some advice on how to do this.
    Thanks in advance.

To do it, you have to partition the hard disk, so you will have one partition for Time Machine and another one to store files and use them in a PC and Mac. To create the partition, follow these steps > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html
In order to read and write in the external disk on the PC, you have to select "MS-DOS (FAT)" as "Format". If you choose any other option, the PC won't be able to read your external disk. Apart from that, note that you can't use files bigger than 4 GB with FAT. If you want to use the external disk with files bigger than 4 GB, you have to format your new partition in exFAT, and you have to do it on a PC

    OK Vicky, good clues...
    See if this helps...
Open Keychain Access in Utilities, use Keychain First Aid under the Keychain Menu item, then either check the Password under that item, change it, or delete it and start over. See if there are duplicates, should be one for Incoming & one for Outgoing.

If Keychain First Aid finds an issue that it cannot repair, or if you do not know your keychain password, you may need to reset your keychain.

  • I have problems transferring files from PC to Mac and from Mac to Mac

I have problems transferring files from PC to Mac, and from Mac to Mac.  PC to PC is fine.  Nothing but problems with the Mac.  One example:
While working on my PC, I open shared folders on an external HDD connected to the Mac.  I click on paste to move the files.  I get an error after a few seconds to a minute of trying to move several files from my PC Win 7 to Mac OS Maverick, that there is a file already at the destination on Mac. This statement is true, but it was just put there because I am copying them over in that same action.  It reads 0Kb and wasn't there before I started.  Then I get an error: The Action Cannot be completed because the folder is open in another program.  Close the folder or file and try again..
Whether I click on it a bunch right of way or wait, it still takes about 45 seconds. I have to do it with every file and it only happens when copying from a PC to Mac.  I have even restarted both computers so nothing is using any files.  If I copy one file at a time, I don't get any error.
So I have one file to move, no problem.  If move 5 files, The first will go fine, but it shows all 5 files in folder at once.  All other files than the first show 0kb. I get the file already existing error once it starts the second file transfer, and I select move and replace.  Then I get The Action Cannot be completed because the folder is open in another program.  I wait or click repeatedly until it starts to move file.  That file will then show something other than 0kb.  When it is done, the error process starts all over.  I tried checking the PC with unlocker, but the files do not show themselves locked on the PC.

Its not only French. Even certain characters in English will come across as gobblydegook from 1 platform to another. I see this in emails that likely were composed in Word & the characters don't come across.
Not sure if this is still true, but years ago someone explained that there is a standard character set & then I think its extended characters & those vary from platform to platform or language to language, etc.

  • Mac won't start following change of permissions. I have started In recovery and run repair disk and reset permissions to all disks inc backups. What do I do now to get the mac up and running without loosing thousands of pics and all other data? I

The problems occurred after photoshop elements said I did not have the necessary permissions to save changes to a photo. I then allowed all to permissions to all disks, I have three external hard drives but I cannot restore from any as they all appear to have some kind of problem. I have repaired all disks in recovery mode and verified all inc mac hd. All permissions are repaired and all disks are saying repaired. So where do I go from here to get the mac back on running mavericks without loosing thousands of photos and all other data ?
Do I need to reinstall Mac OS ?
The only options I get to reinstall is mountain lion?.. I have been running the latest mavericks .?.
Do I reinstall and then update?
The external drives are not smart drives so how do I ensure I retain all my files?

your best option is to connect an external drive and reinstall OS X on that external to run the system from. then copy all your files over to the new install for safe keeping. then try doing a reinstall of Mavericks over the top of the current install on the internal drive and test.
