B&W G-3  Hard Drive Limit??

I put a new 250 gig drive in a B&W G-3. It only sees 128 gig of that. Now I remember reading somewhere that these machines have a 128 limit. Is that right.
If I put an ata PCI card in there would I be able to access all 250gig??
thanks, steve

Don,
Thanx 4 your indulgence. I am with you so far. We are getting closer to the kernel of information that can be memorized and universally applied.
The 128GB limit is a hardware-based drive size limit - that's the biggest drive an ATA/66 controller can 'see'. A drive larger than that will be seen as being only 128GB.
Is there a chart of ATA controller generations? /16; /33; /66; /100; ...
This search points to an article on "How to Differentiate Between [G4] Models, including an ATA/66 bus and an ATA/100 bus.
I have forgotten if I have seen a chart of the generations and limits.
The article "Macintosh: Using 128 GB or Larger ATA Hard Drives" states:
"There are two primary requirements that must be met for higher capacity hard drives to be fully utilized within a computer. 1. The computer must have Mac OS X 10.2 or later. and 2. The computer must provide support for the drives via the BootROM."
"Once formatted [using 10.2 or later], the drive will be recognized under the version of Mac OS 9.2.2 that comes with the Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors) and later products."
"The BootROM of Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors), Xserve, Power Mac G5, and any other model introduced after June 2002 can accommodate these larger drives."
To summarize for larger drives
No computers prior to June 2002 can see more than 128 GB of any drive;
and
Any CPU post June 2002 that is asked to boot into OS 9, must first be formatted with 10.2 or later and the boot volume must be less than 200 GB
Would that be over simplifying?

BTW, Happy 4th.

  • TiBook 1Ghz -- Maximum internal hard drive limit?

Looking for a definitive answer to the question of hard drive capacity limitations in the TiBook --
I have the last of the mighty TiBooks -- a 1Ghz, 15". I want to replace the internal hard drive. Is there a limit to the drive capacity I can use and access in this PowerBook? Is it the 120 GB limit that affects most older Macs, or can I put a 160 GB (looking at WD Scorpio...Circuit City $79!) and be able to access the whole thing?
If anyone has the answer, has experience doing this or can point me to the KB documents, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

The Drive Compatibility Database at xlr8yourmac.com contains four reports of successful installation of 160GB drives in 1GHz Titanium Powerbooks. There are no reports of unsuccessful installations in that model. There are no reports at all of 160GB drive installations in the 867MHz Tibook, successful or otherwise. There are also no reports of 160GB drive installations in earlier Tibook models (800MHz and slower), successful or otherwise. Previous posts in the Tibook forums have reported the earlier models' inability to "see" more than 127GB of a 160GB drive, no matter how it has been formatted or prepared.
Thus, Hardy Geer's report (above) about the 1GHz Tibook is quadruply confirmed, and whether or not the simultaneously-produced 867MHz Tibook can use 160GB drives remains uncertain.
To find the four reports, I searched the database for Powerbook G4s running OS X 10.3 and 10.4 in which hard drives manufactured by Hitachi, Fujitsu, Seagate, Western Digital and Samsung, all of whom make 160GB drives, had been installed. Then I scanned all the reports that came up, to determine which PB G4 model each report concerned.
There were many more reports of successful 160GB drive installations in Aluminum PB G4s, including at least one in the original 1GHz 17" Albook introduced in January 2003 - the same time as the 867MHz 12" Albook. Though Albooks aren't my specialty, I suspect this indicates that all Albooks can use 160GB drives, and perhaps larger ones. There was only one report of the installation of Western Digital's recently-introduced 250GB IDE drive (the only one bigger than 160GB currently on the market) in a Powerbook, and that was in a late-model 1.67GHz Albook.

  • Hyper-V 2012 R2 HOST hard drive limit

Is there a limit to the size of the HOST hard drive?
I recently loaded Hyper-V on a server with a 2500GB hard drive array.  I did not notice till it was too late (server already in production with Guests) that the install created a 2047 GB partition and left 466 GB 'unallocated'.
Is there a 2 TB limit on the HOST?

    Milos,
I am afraid I am not able to figure this out.
I really want my server to use the whole disk as "C".
How do I create the full 2.5 TB disk?
I have tried playing with diskpart but either Hyper-V 2012 R2 will not install to the disk or it over rides the GPT setting and returns it to MBR.

I want to put this hard drive in will it work http://www.amazon.co.uk/Seagate-750GB-Momentus-Serial-Hybrid/dp/B0068QO82G/ref=c m_rdp_product. I upgraded the ram to 4gb not long ago either aim also running on Lion?

    Kimako,
if you’re able to partition it externally, but you’re not able to partition it internally, then there might be an issue with your MacBook Pro’s internal SATA cable.

  • 500 GB Hard Drive Limit, Is it true?

I have a Mac Pro 2x 3.0 Dual Core which I purchased about 1.5 years ago (MacPro1,1 Dual-Core Intel Xeon Processor Speed:3 GHz)
I remember when I purchased it the specs said 500GB drive was the max supported so I put 4 of them in. Now I have one drive that is starting to go bad. I see 1 TB drives are in the 100 dollar range and I was wondering if the 500 GB limit is set in stone, or if I put a 1 TB or 1.5TB drive in my machine will it see it? (I am hoping a OS or Firmware update would bypass this limit)
    Thanks

There is no limit. 500gb was the max available at the time. Many, many people are using larger than 500 gb drives, and I have the same machine as you so include me in that.
PS WD has a 2.0Tb drive in testing...

  • Is there a hard drive limit to mid-2009 MacBook Pro?

    I currently have a 160GB HDD. I know the white MacBooks don't.

The limit is what you can buy. Right now that's 1 TB for a notebook SATA drive that will fit into your computer model.

  • I have a 2.33 MBP. What is the hard drive limit?

Is there a limit to the size of drive to put in? I currently have a 320 GB 7200rpm in there from my first upgrade from 2 years ago.

I believe you need to use a 9.5mm drive in there. 750GB is the largest one out there.

  • Hard drive limit?

When I bought my MacPro last July It was offered with drives up to 750gb. Is that a limit or can I put in a 1tb or even 1.5tb drive into one of the bays?

Ive been using 4 1TB drives in mine with no issues at all.
I think 750Gb was the hightest consumer drive at that time.
I mean, sata essentially is sata. so there shouldnt be any issues.
    goodluck!

  • Overdrive to overcome G4 hard drive limit

Has anyone tried Overdrive from Mac Update to be able to format their drives over 128g?
I installed it and its showing my drive properly at 250g.
    Here is the link.
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/29409/overdrive

I have been using a NVRAM script to enable LBA48 in a Cube and a Sawtooth G4 for a few months without problems. Just be sure you partition the disk to less than 128GB for the initial system partition, and keep a copy of the script installer on it. If NVRAM is erased or reset, the partitions above 128 will be inaccessible, or the Mac will ask if you want to erase them (you don't) when it boots. Re-running the script restores full access. The NVRAM script requires OS 10.3 or later, I believe. It does not work for OS 9. For that you need Mac ROM 9.5 or later which came with the last OS 9 G4s.
Overdrive makes installing the script easy - no messing with Open Firmware required.

  • Maximum hard drive size for 350 MHz slot loading?

    Hello,
What is the maximum hard drive size for a 350 MHz slot loading imac?
I am aware of a 128 GB limit on imacs. Does the 128 GB hard drive limit apply to all imac CRTs or just the earlier models?
Here are the specs of my imac:
    Blueberry 350 MHz
    Slot loading CD-ROM drive,
    6 GB hard drive
Is the maximum hard drive size limit of 127GB apply to this particular model?
    Thanks

Yes, the last CRT iMac was in 2001. The first machines with built-in greater than 127 GB support were released in June 2002, as this article explains:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86178
So all CRT iMacs have that limiation.

  • External hard drive speed for backups and archiving

I'm planning to buy a pair of external FireWire hard drives to backup and archive my iBook G4. I've read a couple of product reports that compare read and write speed of hard drives which seems to be a function of each drive's rotational speed.
I then noticed that my iBook's internal hard drive is slower (at 4200 RPM) than either of the external drives I'm now considering (7200 RPM and 5400 RPM). A test report I read showed the 7200 RPM drive duplicating 1GB twice as fast as the 5400 RPM drive when connected via FireWire to a G5.
Will my slower internal hard drive limit the speed of duplication so that there is little or no advantage to the 7200 RPM drive over the 5400 RPM drive for me?
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Probably should have been clearer in my initial question. The 7200 RPM drive I'm looking at is a desktop model, and a bit cheaper than the 5400 RPM drive, which is portable. I like the smaller footprint of the portable drive (and the convenience of it being bus powered) but don't want to pay more for those benefits only to be disappointed with its performance.
So, I'm actually trying to decide between a higher speed/lower cost/desktop vs. lower speed/higher cost/portable. If I could determine that the actual performance difference between these was not very significant when used solely to backup and archive my iBook, I'd gladly pay a bit more for the convenience and small size of the portable.
If there indeed is a big performance difference, I'd find space on my desk for the desktop drive and pocket the savings.

  • K7T266 Pro2-RU Hard drive size limit

What is the maximum size hard drive that the BIOS can handle for the K7T266 Pro2-RU board? The official web site and BIOS updates are sort of vague... I know that the regular limit is 137 GB, and Windows XP Service Pack 1 has some kind of workaround. Will there be problems with installing big hard drives on this board? I'm not planning on using the RAID controller...
    Thanks

well that works for drives over 32gb and under 137gb on boards whos bios cannot see drives over 32 gb
but ive never seen it proved to work with drives over 137 gb in a board cannot cope thith drives that big
bios indicates the raid has 48 bit lba support so usde your big drives on that

  • URGENT! T30 Hard Drive Replacement - Max Size Limit?

Is there a limit to the GB size that I can use to replace my internal hard drive?  The largest I have seen referenced on the lenovo site is 80gb, but I would like to go bigger if it can be supported.  Any ideas?  I need to get this machine up and running ASAP, as the old drive is completely dead.

If you can find a brand new 7200rpm PATA laptop drive, such as that Hitachi 7K100, grab it immediately since they're no longer in production...
Personally, I prefer Seagate, but my T43 runs a Hitachi 60GB/7200 rpm...

  • A20M hard drive size limit

I'm having difficulty upgrading the hard drive in my A20M 2628 from 80GB to 160GB.  It has the latest BIOS, but I can't find any reference to Logic Block Addressing, or to hard drive capacity.  Is a 160GB hard drive more than the A20M can handle? Can anyone out there tell me the biggest drive the A20M can use?

    Welcome to the forum!
I believe that BIOS limit is at 137GB. You can get around this by partitioning the drive on another machine, or with Linux.
    Hope this helps.
