B&W G3 (350Mhz)

Hi there, i have a B&W G3 (350Mhz) currently running OS 9.2.2.
I have upgraded the RAM to 512MB, intending to upgrade it all the way to 1GB.
I then hoped to install a full version of OS Jaguar.
I know i need to update firmware to V1.1 which i will do, but thought that 10.2
would be a safe upgrade. I had heard some horror stories around upgrading to
Panther/Tiger so was intending just going as far as Jaguar on this machine.
Is that a safe upgrade or am i likely to end up in difficulty? Should i just stick with 9.2.2?
The main reason i suppose for the upgrade is that when i had V 9.2 , i was told the
only web browser i could really use would be icab. Internet Explorer doesn't allow me to
access hotmail for example so i am actually using different browsers for different tasks.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Andrew

I see what you mean but i want to stick with the same hardware. I now have 3 macs
due to upgrading. Feels reassuring or something to just boost the current machine
rather than 'bin it'. Seems a shame not to take advantage of its upgradability.
Perhaps it won't be quite as good as a G4. Then again, from what i have read there
seem to be some conclusions that a 1GHz G3 processor in a B&W is faster than a G4
due to some technicalities

  • Upgrade help for G3 350Mhz OS 10.0.4 to 10.1.5

I've been loaned a Connon PowershotA520 digital camera that requires OS X 10.1.5 to operate camera with my machine. An older B&W G3 350Mhz. with 128MB installed RAM, running Classic 9.1. and OS X 10.0.4 on same hard drive. What is the easiest and least costly way to upgrade to OS X 10.1.5 and not loose Classic? I have a ton of programs and peripherals that want the option of Classic.Other questions - can upgrade be done with CD's or downloads - and will I need RAM upgrade as well? Will it require a full erase and reinstall? Help appreciated.

    Hi Bird 1;
May I welcome you to the Apple Discussion Forum.
I concur with the solution Tom presented to you.
If you still want to upgrade OS X instead, I would suggest that rather then upgrading to 10.1.5 you seriously consider going to at least 10.2.8. When OS X reached 10.2.8 it was a much better operating system then anything that preceded that.

  • How do I connect a G4 350mhz as a hard drive?

I have an old G4 350mhz and would like to use it as storage. Does anyone know how I would do this or is there a better use for it?
    Thanks

Click here and determine if it's an AGP or PCI model. If it's PCI, install an OS on it, enable file sharing from that OS, and then access it from another computer in the network, or place the hard drive in an enclosure. If it's an AGP model, connect it to another Mac with a FireWire cable and start up that G4 with the T key held down.

  • Dead iMac 350MHz

    Hello,
My sister has been using my old computer (iMac G3 350MHz, Blueberry, w/ 512MB RAM.) Over this past weekend, the computer was on, and it randomly shut off. When my sister tried to power up the computer, it wouldn't power up. I tried different outlets to no avail. I also swapped the power cords, but still no results. The only thing I noticed is when I unplug the power cord from the back of the computer and replug it back in, when the power button is pushed, the green light goes on and it turns off, but only stays on for 1/2 to a 1/4 of a second and shuts off. Any suggestions on tackling this problem? I replaced the PRAM battery about 3 or 4 years ago, but I can't see why it would make the computer completely unable to start up.

The most likely cause, based on the symptoms you describe, is that the analog video board has gone bad. This is the part that connects directly to the CRT display to show the image. I base this guess on the iMac not powering up after a shutdown unless it is unplugged in between attempts, and it powering up for only a short time before shutting off again. It seems to be the most common failure on these old CRT iMacs.
There is a lesser possibility that it is the power supply or the PRAM battery. If the battery has not been replaced recently (a few years), you may want to check that possibility. It looks like this
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item-specials/Newer%20Technology/BAA36VPRAM/
If you have access to a voltmeter, you can check your current battery for 3.6v.
Unfortunately, if it's the video board or the power supply, for most people, it is not an economical fix.

  • Prohibitory Sign on Mac OS 10.3.9 installed onto an iMac 350MHz

    Hi.
    Mi name is Jose Blanco.
I have an iMac 350MHz which has the Mac OS 10.3.9.
Six mounths ago I installled a new hard drive into this computer and I installed a fresh Mac OS 10.3 onto it.
Yesterday (august, 9) this computer showed the prohibitory sign, consequently I've installed the operating system again and the computer has worked fine until today, that it showed the same issue.
    Thanks for everything.

    Hola Jose!
What size is the Hard Drive, and how much space is available?
How much RAM is installed, and is it original or added?
    Have you run Repair Disk?
THESE ARE THE STEPS FOR USING DISK UTILITY TO REPAIR YOUR HD
1.Insert your Mac OS X CD-ROM disc or Restore DVD disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2.Once started up from CD or DVD, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
    3.Click the First Aid tab.
4.Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5.Select your Mac OS X volume, if necessary.
6.Click Repair. If DU reports errors it has fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported.
7.When finished, select Quit Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
8.Select Quit Installer from the Installer menu.
9.In the resulting pop-up window, choose restart.
10.After the computer has restarted, you can eject the CD.
    Have you run Repair Permissions?
TO REPAIR PERMISSIONS ON THE STARTUP DISK
1.Open Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities, and select the startup disk in the left column.
    2.Click First Aid.
3.Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions or Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions. (I never "Verify". Just run "Repair".)
Rerun RP until the only message it reports is:
"We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./System/Library/Filesystems/cd9660.fs/cd9660.util.
    New permissions are 33261"
This is a status message and not a cause for concern. You may safely ignore it.
    Or these:
"We are using a special uid for the file or directory ./private/var/at/jobs. New uid is 1"
"We are using a special uid for the file or directory ./private/var/at/spool. New uid is 1"
Again, these are status messages, which appeared after Security Update 2005-001.
There may be others that you can ignore. Complete list at link below.
    Spurious Permissions Errors Using:
    Panther 10.3.x
When "Repair Permissions" is complete. Quit "Disk Utility".
If neither of those corrects it, Reset The PRAM & NVRAM.
    How To
    1.Shut down the computer.
2.Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3.Turn on the computer.
4.Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
5.Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6.Release the keys.
    Good Luck!

  • Will this Seagate work in iMac 350mhz G3?

Quick question here. Will the below [new] Hard Drive work in an older iMac that is an iMac G3 350mhz?
    HD 120G|SEAGATE EIDE 8M ST3120814A - OEM

Most modern IDE/ATA drives under 128 MB are backwards-compatible and will work fine.
But the people to ask are the people who stand to make some money by selling you this drive and having you be happy with it. And a much more important question is, "Will you take it back and refund my money if it does NOT work?"
If they waffle, I suggest you do business with a Mac-oriented dealer who can answer a resounding, "YES, we offer support and a money-back guarantee!"

  • 5600 ULTRA - 350Mhz or 400Mhz? - are they foolling us all?

    Hello!
I am interested in buying a MSI Geforce FX 5600 ULTRA, but I understand that NVIDIA has sent out two versions of the 5600  Ultra chip: a 350MHZ version and a 400MHZ version.
Press states that the market if filled with Ultras with different speeds and at the same price! As you can imagine, I wish to buy the 400MHZ version.
    My questions are:
Which version of the chip does MSI use in their cards?
Has MSI ever used the 350MHZ? And if true, is it possible that I pick up a card with the old chip?
    Thank you for reading.

    peter_north,
If your heart is set on the GeForceFX 5600 Ultra, the answer to your question is 400Mhz RAMDAC.
    Take Care,
    Richard
P.S. If you already have a GeForce4 Ti, I would wait a little longer, since the price on the FX5600s and FX5900s are still dropping.

  • Smurf 350Mhz Server...is it dead?

I have a 350Mhz BW that is just not really working right.
i have replaced the DVD drive, RAM, PRAM battery, Zip Drive and removed all PCI cards.
    Nothing works still.
then replaced the RAGE card and tried to boot OS8.5 OS9 OSx.3 but non of them will boot from the DVD drive.
I have tried another HDD with a PPC linux install and it boots fine off the HDD. But cannot access any drive...
I got a Burned copy os X.3 to half way install, encountered an error and now that CD will not boot either.
I cannot boot From any device IDE0 or IDE1.
I have gotten a Defalt catch! error, but it froze and did not produce a code...
    that happened only one time
Will Not boot from OF commands at all...
Is this a dead Logic Board or what am i missing?

the DVD drive does work in the mac... i got a single boot....and a install half way...
The CDs do work.. I used them to install Panther on a friends Yosimite...
I did get OSX on the pc when i got it, it updated itself.. then either froze while shutting down, or was killed when i lost power...then it never let me boot from a cd again.
the primary goal of this PC was not to run OSX or OS9 (though id like a machine to run 9) but it was to Port MorphOS over to G3.
But if the Logic board is bad i might as well just get a new G4 tower off ebay for 75$ and scrap this as a new logic board is more than that. then i can boot any OS i please, architecture permitting

  • IMac 350mhz Networking Help?

Ok...I'm finally gonna try and set up a home network. Actually, I think I've already figured everything out. I've got this Mac, and older iMac 350mhz running OSX, and an even older HP Pavillion 433mhz running XP sitting here in the same room all networked together from my cable modem and a wired D-Link Router via Ethernet. I was originally going to punch a hole in the wall and put the iMac in my son's room which is right next door. Well, I got to thinking and thought wireless may be a better route to go since I'm not sure if I'll leave that iMac in there or move it downstairs.
I understand that I will nedd the wireless router. And I will need a USB transmitter/receiver for the iMac. However, since it's the old USB 1.0, I believe that speed will suffer a little. Is there any type of Ethernet (which the iMac has) that converts to a USB 2.0? Or better yet, is there any receiver/transmitter that plugs into the Ethernet rather than the USB? Curious due to the absolute limitations of upgrading these iMacs.
    Thanks much,
    Robert

  • Install hang on a 350MHz Indigo

    Hi,
I am using a generic install CD on a 350 non-Firewire Indigo, and it will not install properly (on two different Indigos). It will install with no problem on a 350MHz Blueberry.
The Indigo will just load and spin relentlessly although it does show the big grey apple screen with the wheel underneath.
It did run through once, but then when it asked for the second install disk, did nothing.
    Ideas?
    Thanks,

Each of the Indigos could have hard drive problems, or a peripheral that's messing up the install.
Try the keyboard and mouse from the Blueberry on one of the indigos (no other peripherals attached). If that doesn't do anything, try another good drive.

  • P965 neo-f, bug of fsb 350Mhz, why?

Thanks to the software " Core Center ", I succeeded has to see why my pc did not boot if I ask for bigger FSB than 350Mhz, in fact the motherboard is still limited even if in the bios, we announce us a limit @ 500Mhz, it was passed in fact by 333 @ 350.
If the question could be put in the developers which work on the bios of this motherboard, that would be very well.
I think that heat-pipes are not compulsory to obtain a successful product.
Developers have to show us the potential of P965 (and not to restrain it as on this screenshot, that is voluntary or not)
We want that the limitations is removed
Thank you in advance and sorry if my syntax in English is not good.

  • Can I put OSX 10.4 on an iMac 350mhz?

I've searched and searched. I can't seem to find an exact answer. Anyway, someone gave me an older iMac 350mhz G3 that has the slot load CD which I've since replaced with a CD/DVD drive, 2x128mb=256mb, upgraded the firmware, and OS 9.2.2.
Well, I purchased the full version of OSX 10.4 on DVD to upgrade it for my son (18 months old, can't get em started on Macs too early I say). It reads the disk fine. However, when I try to either restart from the disk or select it as the Start Up disk, it either gives me an error or tells me that it can't select the disk as a start up.
No idea what's wrong. I've read a little about this Target Disk deal thru firewire...should I try that?
    Any tips would be great.
    Thanks much,
    Robert

    Robert,Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Duh...just realized that it doesn't have firewire so that's out the window.
Unfortunately more than you think. If you check the 10.4 box you'll see that Firewire is a minimum requirement for Tiger Technically Panther(10.3) is the maximum supported by the iMac 350MHz. You would also find Tiger much uncomfortable in 256Mb RAM, Panther should be okay. You can probably find it cheaper on eBay - but make sure you get a genuine retail version.regards

  • IMac G3 350mhz-Startup

I just recently got a imac G3 350mhz and i was sooo excited so i got it out of the box and turned it on and it came on normal except that when i got to the desktop it froze. So i held down the power button not knowing how to unfreeze it. Then i pressed the start button and it came up,made the chime, went to grayish blue screen and in the middle popped a question mark then it flashed to the mac sign then flashed to a screen where the Apple logo was ans there was the spinning gear( I assumed that it was loading) and i waited and waited and nothing. It Just keept spinning and spinning.
All this happened the same day i got it and i only started it once.
This computer is also my first Apple computer but i am very good with windows and takeing apart computers. The only keyboard that i had was the one from my Windows computer. I do not know if it makes a diference. i know that the mouse worked because of the first time but i know that the keyboard is not working with the computer. I do not have axcess to the instalation CD's. i want to know is the Computer should work with the keyboard and what is wrong with my Mac
I dont know if you can find this out but what is the avrage amount of time it should take to boot up with no software on it except the OS
    Thanks, Ryan
    Imac   Mac OS X (10.4)   iMac G3 350mhz 128Mb

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I've asked the hosts to move this to iMac CRT forum which is more relevant.
128Mb RAM is insufficient to run OS 10.4 and the 350MHz iMac G3 doesn't support 10.4 officially anyhow.
You'll need to track down a copy of OS 9 and OS 10.3 to get this iMac working well. (You need OS 9 to ensure that the firmware was updated prior to installing OS 10.3 or 10.4; failure to do this upgrade can cause loss of display!).
Contact the seller for the install disks. Failure to supply the disks with the machine is breaching the Software License.
Let us know how you get on.

  • 350mhz   versus   400mhz  model performance difference?

As I continue my quest to purchase used G3 iMacs for my classroom, I wonder if there is much of a difference between these 2 models. I realize that the 350 model doesn't have firewire....but I don't need firewire. I am going to load Jaguar on these machines as well as making sure that they all have 128 meg of ram. I know the 400 model with Jaguar works fine. Will the 350 model with 128 meg of ram also run with Jaguar and be useable?

    Hi Terry,
There's really not much of a difference, performance wise, because everything is the same, except the 50MHz slower processor. Note, however, if you plan on using an Airport Wireless card in any of them, the Indigo 350MHz model does not have an internal airport slot. The blueberry one does.
I ran Jaguar on my personal 350MHz iMac with 192 and later 256 MB of RAM, and it was fine. No speed demon, but for basic web surfing/Appleworks, etc, it was fine. Try not to have more than a few apps open at a time, however.
When doing the installs, you can save a lot of time and HD space by eliminating the extra printer drivers and languages - about a GB of space.
    Hope that helps.

  • IMac G3 350Mhz Memory & System Upgrade Killer

I was trying to upgrade (RAM and system) my children's iMac. I went from 9.1 to 10.2 (own all software). 256 chip went in first and only with 9.1. Ran fine. Next step was to put original CD (not tray) in iMac and install system upgrade.
Ran fine during requested restarts. Shut down and came back 4 hours later to run tutorial program (Total Training for Mac OS X). I could hear the 'good' mac startup sound, but the entire screen was dark...as if it were turned off.
After reading messages, I learned about 'firmware'. Should I have installed something? Doesn't the 10.2 know to install this firmware?
Need direction on how to get the children's computer running before wife does a 'Lorraina Bobbit'.
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

After turning on the machine, wait a few minutes and then push the button on the front. Once this button has changed color, push it again and see if your display functions normally; if so, open the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences and set your Mac OS 9 system as the startup disk. Restart your machine, and then perform the instructions in sentence 1 again. From here, download and install the firmware update immediately, and then use Startup Disk 9.21 to reselect the Mac OS X system as the startup disk.
