B&W G3 gets Black Rectangle on Boot - Hangs

My B&W G3 will not boot OS X 10.4 anymore. It worked fine before. Now when it boots I get the Apple logo then I get a solid black rectangle in the middle of the screen and it hanges.
I put the 10.4 DVD in the drive and pressed C on boot. It starts to boot from the DVD then bang I get the solid black rectangle.
I took all the cards out except the video card. I droped the RAM to 1 stick (256 MB). No help.
It is booting from an Apple 6 GB IDE drive.
It is a revision 1 board.
I replaced the battery, pressed the CUDA ect.
I put in OS 9.2 CD and tried to boot from it as well. No luck. It hangs as well.
No network is connected.
I tried USB keyboard & Mouse and ADB. No help.
Why am I getting the solid black rectangle on the screen after the Apple logo?
Thanks!
Tony

    hey everyone,
i have a Satellite L350-ST3702, Vista home premium Sp1, (had it for about 4months) and it wont boot anymore,
so yesterday i got an black screen error on my laptop it said to restart it,
so i did, then my laptop just wouldn't stat up any more, i have no idea why?
so i put in the recovery disks that came with my laptop to just reinstall every thing like if i just got it out of the box,
and as i follow the instructions that the Toshiba recovery wizard disk says, and
as its "coping files" i get a blue screen error saying "a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damages to your computer DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL"
and say to restart or what ever and just keeps doing that.
    Tech Info: "STOP: 0x000000D1"( 0xCCE491E0, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x8CE42FD7)
Then i restart my system and a black screen come up saying "BOOTMGR missing"
so now i have nothing that works, i have retried the disks but same error with blue screen. and some times

If you cannot perform a recovery, then there likely is a hardware problem.  That's something that the warranty was meant to handle.  I'd suggest initiating a warranty repair by calling Toshiba Support at 800-457-7777..

  • T440s with Windows 8.1 (and BitLocker) - 1 ot of 3 times gets black screen when booting

We have a case on a machine with original "Lenovo Windows 8" installed. Windows updated to 8.1 and the latest patches. System update is up to date.
Aprox 1 out of 3 times, when booting, after entering the BitLocker PIN, the Windows loading screen is shown in 1-2 seconds, and the the screen goes black. But the machine is moving forward, because the fingerprint lights up and the user is able to log in using that.
(The machine was even able to print a document that was sent to the printer when the machine was offline.)
Have tried to disable fingerprint without any success.

    I have the same problem.
After trying and failing many times, I worked out that disabling my nvidia card was the only successful solution.
This will then allow the intel graphics chip to work on its own.
Something is wrong with the communication with the USB Dock and the nvidia card! I am hoping a workaround that allows me to keep the nvidia card switched on will be found by someone...

  • TS3623 When I download certain movies I get a black rectangle in the bottom center of the screen. How do I get rid of this?

When I download movies, I get a small, black rectangle in the bottom center of the screen. This is irritating! How do I get rid of it?

Search the forum.  This has been reported a few times. I do not recall what the fix is, but it has already been posted.

  • Why do I get a black rectangle on the left side of the screen when I import a clip in Imovie?

I import a clip into imovie 6 and I get a black rectangle on the left side of the screen. It's driving me crazy!

    Thanks for the reply.
My original source material is in Apple Intermediate Codec, with 32-bit float audio and a variable frame rate. This has not been friendly to FCP, so I use Quicktime to convert it to Apple ProRes with 24-bit audio and 29.97 frame rate. This is what I import into FCP.
My sequence settings are set to the same specs as my source material. 854x480, square pixels, no field dominance, Apple ProRes compression.
The black bar on the left side of the screen shows up before I even export. It shows up when I render everything.
I am exporting with Quicktime Conversion to:
    MP4
    h.264 codec
    720x405
    1000 video bit rate
    Main Profile
    No cropping/filters or anything.
The ONLY thing I did different before upgrading to FCP6 was that I used Apple Intermediate Codec all the way through. I was told by an FCP instructor that writes and publishes all kinds of FCP training material that I should upgrade to FCP6 and use the Apple ProRes422 Codec instead, so that's what I'm trying to do.
I am going back to restart my project using Apple Intermediate Codec all the way through like I used to, but it will be awhile before I can tell if that solved the problem. Either way, I would like to be using the ProRes codec....
    Thoughts?

  • 10.4.9 Startup Prb. No blue or login screen - gray screen 4 black rectangle

    Hi -
I originally posted this in the Tiger forum but
other than buying a new computer and updating

    there were no suggestions.

A few weeks ago I updated my OS to 10.4 and last week to 10.4.9.
Has been running OK until today. When I start up, I get the
light gray screen with the gray Apple logo and dial-thing. Then
instead of refreshing into the blue screen with the startup progress
bar (the one before the login screen), the computer refreshes
into a light gray screen with four black rectangles (bricks) across
    the top of the screen.

I did experience a Kernel panic a few days ago - but

all OK. Changed startup disk to 10.4.0 on a second partition, computer
boots fine. Also boots from 9.2.2 on a second internal hard drive.
The only info I see in Console is for the successful startup, but
there may be a record of the failed startups somewhere else?
    Where would one look??
Planning to reinstall 10.4.9 combo from this 10.4.0 partition. Not
planning to go to 10.4.11 until 10.4.9 is working again.
Any ideas on what might be the problem?
    Thanks!

    G3 B&W, 450 Mhz, 704Mb RAM, DVD-ROM Mac OS X (10.4.9) two internal HDs - one running 9.2.2 - other with 10.4.9 and 10.4.0 partitions

    Grant:
The four bricks on gray background is a Display/Driver problem of some kind.
What display card are you running?
My first thought was a display problem - but the card seems OK (info below)
because tartups from any disk other than the one running 10.4.9 are OK.
If the driver were bad would one expect to see the
Gray Apple start-up? Do you think reinstalling the 10.4.9 Combo
is the best first approach to resolve the problem?
    Thanks so much!

it seems that this bug related to i915 chip ( or intel graphic card ) is fixed in kernel 3.18rc3 mainline ( we can find this kernel package in AUR )
there is also another and complete different bug when we use a kernel 3.17 and even 3.18 ( it's a random bug ) but with a similar effect : boot can hang ( the boot process suddenly stops ) :
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=189622

downgrading to kernel 3.16.x is the workaround
I assume my computer is affected by one of these bugs. While I can get to the point where my window manager is loaded, everything almost immediately hangs (but doesn't freeze). Terminal windows become non-responsive and Chromium will refuse input. It's very weird. This happens with both of the 3.17 kernel updates but not in any of the 3.16 releases (including 3.16.7).
This is on an AMD system (cpu/gpu w/ open source driver). Overall 3.17 seems rather buggy.

  • I was trying to extent monitor, I get black screen on laptop and external monitor :/

so I have this hdmi cable that plugs into the DVI on my external monitor.
I did get the screen to show up just on the external monitor and that's it.  Now, when I boot up my lap top I get black screen on both monitors.  Uh oh.
I've unpugged the  monitor, batter, all that stuff.
I think it's possible I clicked on don't display external monitor or something, but not it's not displaying anywhere.
    I have an idea pad of some sorts w/ windows 8.  I don't think it's 8.1
    thanks
    -Hayes

so I got this resolved.  the guy at the computer store hit f10 and then enter.  he did this while the screen was black
shouldnt' it just detect that there's not an external monitor?  but even when there was a monitor connected, both screens were black.

  • Black rectangle around curser

    Hi,
Straight after I finished installing the latest updtaes that came to me automatically there appeared on screen a black rectangle outline about 2 inches long by 1 1/2 inches high around my curser. it moves as I move the curser.
I don't like it as it is distracting but have no idea how it got there and no idea how to get rid if it.
I do hope someone can help me.
    Thanks

    Hi-
I assume it may also be accompanied by a grayish screen.
This would be a kernel panic:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1392
Since you just did some plugging/unplugging, I would remove all cables again, open the tower and reseat the graphics card.
Reconnect monitor, keyboard and mouse only, and try starting again.
If still a no go, I would open it once again, and reseat the RAM.
While you're in there, make sure all other connections are tight.
    Reconnect and try starting.
If that doesn't do it, you will have to look deeper:

  • Black rectangle

How can I get rid of the black rectangle that is usually on the back page arrow or right now it is around the apple at the top of the page? Sometimes it will go around half the stuff on the page. If safari is not open it will go around an icon on the desk top. I have tried restoring my defaults on the mouse and in system preferences.

    Hi
It sounds like you've accidentally turned on the Voiceover feature. Go into System Preferences - Universal Access, and turn off Voiceover if it's on.
The keyboard shortcut is cmd-F5 so it's not too difficult to hit it by mistake.

  • Why do some imported jpegs, psd files show as black rectangles?

I recently scanned a dozen B&W 8x10 prints, plus a color  book dust jacket, into Photoshop, saving all to my desktop variously as jpegs, TIFFs and PSDs, then attempted to import the images to my iPhoto library. Some showed up fine but most were simply black rectangles. With Get Into I could see the file size and the format, but that's it.
One failed import was a 20MB jpeg, so file size might be an issue. But all other other failed imports were in the 2.7MB to 12MB. Suspecting file size may be the problem, I used PS to change the image size from 600dpi to 300 dpi, dropping the size to 5MB or so, and that worked. Question: Is there a size restriction on importing files to the iPhoto library? Any advice much appreciated. Thanks!  John Grissim.
    MacMini dual-core Intel, OS 10.6.8, iPhoto 6.0.6, CS3 Photoshop

Black and white photos scanned as grayscale are not supported by iPhoto.  Actually it's the color profile, Dot Gain 20%,  which is used that causes the problem.  CMYK color mode photos are also not supported by iPhoto.
For PSD files if you have an alpha channel that can cause problems in iPhoto.
With iPhoto size does'nt matter.  I've imported 100 MB files without a problem. In resizing you mighty have changed the profile or something that made it usable.
Scan all b/w photos as color.  You'll get the same result but they will be iPhoto compatible.
If you want to conver the current b/w scans without rescanning you can try one of the conversions apps available at  Toad's Cellar.

  • BootCamp: Windows 7 installation fails display only gets black

Hello i have a late 2008 macbook pro 15 with core 2 duo 2.66GHZ and 9400M. I have a big problem: i want to install windows 7 but via bootcamp it doesnt work! Partition is done the computer starts to install windows and then the display gets black and the macbook seems to turn the power off but the fans are still spinning. I dont know how to install windows on this MacBook. When i try to install simply from the cd theres the same problem: Display gets black and macbook seems to turn off. How can i install Windows 7? is there any possibility to boot from a USB device although it has a super drive?
Thank you guys for your help
    greetings from germany

@LenBlazer: As far as I know, CSM support is required for Windows 7 to run in UEFI mode on any machine.  CSM - compatibility services module - makes some legacy-style BIOS hooks available when in UEFI mode as I understand it.
@BAZZI: I can't find the N581 in the BIOS simulator to look at the options.  Some other similar machines don't seem to list CSM as a separate option. Hopefully CSM support is enabled (silently) when UEFI is selected but I can't verify that, unfortunately.
CSM may not be the problem in your case.  It has been on the machines I've tested Win7/UEFI on.  When it isn't enabled you get to the Windows 7 "dancing balls" splash and then it hangs.
Sorry I can't be of more help.

  • When rotating a simple black rectangle, jagged edges are created. How can I fix this? (for web)

I have been messing with a simple black rectangle and when I transform it, jagged edges appear. This is the base for a logo for web. I have anti-alising checked in pref. The logo looks horrible and blurry/jagged on the edges even when previewed on several screens from pc to mac. Any suggestions are welcome!
p.s. this is also happening with text, that has been made an object (top of text seen in the rectangle.)

I don't see anything unusual. That's the best anti-aliasing you can possibly get. Have you seen another black on white hard edge at the same angle that looks better? When comparing raster images make sure you view all of them at screen resolution which is 100% zoom.
Obviously anti-aliasing of horizontal and vertical lines is the best followed by 45° angles and at your angle it is one of the worst because with this angle you have less pixel lines to render it on the pixel grid of the screen. Also the pixels of each monitor screen are different sizes and if you happened to be viewing it on screens with relatively larger pixels the aliasing will be more noticeable.
