B570 1068 mSata SSD support

Hi,
I want to install an SSD into a Lenovo B570 Laptop. According to the data sheet it has "Two PCIe Mini Card slots".
Do these support mSata SSDs like the CT120M500SSD3 (only source saying it would is this) or do I have to get a special PCIe Mini card like the FPN064C2RM?
I am not sure what would work, optically the slot looks like a msata slot, but I found no reliable source saying it will work?!
I just found this post saying it supports msata SSDs but they werent sure if booting off an msata SSD was supported. Can anyone provide clarification on this matter?
Thanks,
volucris

Yes, due to BIOS limitations, booting off the Msata SSD might not be possible, you can use that ssd as a cache drive to help boost system performance or use it as a data drive, but you will not be able to boot windows from it
Lets make 2015 the year of the #DO

    Hi,
I don't think there is any limit on that. I believe that anything up to 500GB will definitely work and most likely even drives up to a 1TB. Samsung is a very popular brand with Evo and Pro series drives. I'd go for one of them.

  • Lenovo B570(P/N:59316294) support mSATA?

    Dear forum members.
    I have a lenovo B570 model with P/N : 59-316294 (Model No : 20093) that I bouhgt in 2012 Sep.
Recently, I hope to speed-up my B570 to attach mSATA SSD.
If my B570 is opened, the feature is as belows.
If bottom cover is opened,  blank slot is appeared.
    My questions are
     This blank slot is mSATA?
: I know that mSATA slot has same pin as min PCI express but two are not compatible each other.
          B570 model has mSTAT Slot?
    Pleaese share your knowledge.
    Thanks.

    hi yangwool,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
Looking at page 38 of the B570 hardware maintenance manual, the Mini PCI-E slot is being used by the Wireless card and/or a WWAN card.
      - Link to picture
Although an mSATA SSD would fit on that slot, the manual doesn't indicate that the slot is electrically compatible with an SSD (unlike other models like the Lenovo Y460's mini PCI-E slot (more info on page 28 of HMM):
If you're leaning towards an SSD upgrade, it would be best to replace the stock HDD with a 2.5" SATA SSD (like this item).

Can I install a mSATA ssd in my HP ENVY 17t-k000 CTO Notebook PC? Added a 250 gb SATA sdd and 8 gb memory chip today but could not find any way to also add a 250 gb mSATA sdd. I looked on the front and back side of the system board.

The Service Manual is no help whatsoever. It says an M.2 mSSD is supported on "select models" but there is no picture of it in the Manual or indication where it is on the "Select Models". Those that do have it use an M.2 version (three connector prongs not 2) so your 840 Evo would not work even if you had one of the "Select Models". I believe on those that have it the M.2 port is right on the motherboard so if you do not see it there you are not among the select.

  • G500 - Is it possible to install a mSATA SSD drive?

    Hi!
I am interested in the Lenovo G500 i7-3612QM and I would like to be able to install a mSATA SSD drive on it.
I have read that these drives can be installed on a PCI Express Mini Card slot, and according to the Hardware Maintenance Manual (p. 29) the computer has two of these slots:
      -Wimax/WIFI  x  1
      -SSD  x  1
The problem is that, although the Wi-Fi slot is easily visible (it appears in a picture in the manual, p. 45), I can't find the second slot, neither in the manual nor in the picture of the inside of the notebook I found in this web (The text is in hungarian, but I haven't been able to find any other picture).
Does anybody know if the second PCI Express slot really exists, please?
    Thank you very much!

  • Lenovo S430 mSATA SSD problem

    Hi,
I bought 32GB Samsung SSD mSATA hard drive.
When I want boot from BIOS from this disk it is okey. I install on this disk Windows 7 32bit and is OK.
But on HDD 320GB I have installed Windows 7 32bit and I don't see this SSD disk on Windows on 320 GB HDD. Don't see on my computer and control panel. I have install ExpressCache aplication and don't wokr again.
    What is wrong??

I think Lenovo S430's msata slot can not support two SSD in single device since the mSATA SSD consist of two identical mSATA SSD integrated in one device using RAID 0.

  • How to add mSata SSD as HDD cache (for Windows 8)?

    Hi,
I have T430 with HDD and Windows 8, 64.  I have installed a new 32 GB mSata SSD, but I cannot figure out a way to set it up as a cache.
I am aware of the solution where ExpressCache needs to be installed  but I have Windows 8 and the below link does not apply:
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=HT074404
I have also tried installing Interl Rapid Storage software.  It does show my SSD but there is no option to "Accelerate".  Googling points out that in BIOS I need to change SATA mode to RAID, but I only have Compatible and AHCI options there.  Installing latest BIOS and lates Intel Rapid Storage drivers did not help.
Any other options I might be missing?  Looks like it is either Lenovo publishes ExpressCache for Win 8 or adds IRS / RAID support in BIOS.
    --Pavel
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Ok, I have figured it out.  Turns out that ExpressCache link for Windows 7 works for Windows 8 as well.  After installing it I had to remove the volume from the SSD using disk manager and then run from the admin command prompt (can get there using Win+X key combo):
    eccmd -partition
This command automatically found my SSD (again trick here is to make sure it is wiped clean first - not formatted and not partitioned).
Now I can see the status and effectiveness of caching via:
    eccmd -info
Impressive - about 60% of read operations right now are from SSD.  System is way more responsive and boots faster.  You can see even that HDD lamp lights up less frequently.  I definitely recommend adding an msata SSD if you have a HDD T430!
PS. ExpressCache.exe which I assume is GUI does not start though, I had to use the command line.

  • S430 mSATA SSD and Dual Boot

Yesterday my Lenovo Thinkpad S430 arrived, I have some questions concerning dual booting Linux and Win 8 from the mSATA. I have a Crucial m4 128Gb with the current firmware 07MH which I want to want to install instead of the 16Gb mSATA SSD which is currently used for caching.
For that I want to do a clean Win 8 install (I got the ISO and a valid serial) and presumably an current Ubuntu. Unfortunately I have no experience with UEFI and Secure Boot and that stuff. Is there anything I need to do, are there any problems with what I want to do?
The current UEFI BIOS on my S430 is the GAET71WW (2.07), should I upgrade it to the current 2.54?
Is there anything else I should know?
    Regards and thank you,
    meruah

If I'm reading Hemanth Kumar's post correctly, 16GB is the largest mSATA drive provided by and supported by Lenovo for use as a cache.
I'd expect that you can use most any capacity mSATA drive in that slot for a primary OS drive.  It is frequently done with Lenovo laptops to install a large mSATA SSD - as I did in my T420, 256GB - and keep the HDD as a data drive.
That said, I don't have specific experience with your machine.  It would be great if someone with specific experience would join the conversation.  Otherwise, I can only say it's probably OK.

  • Boot from mSATA SSD in Probook 650

Hi guys and girls, Is it possible to add an mSATA (NGFF) SSD in the Hp Probook 650 G1 (F1N78EA) and boot from it? The technical manual does desribe that there is a slot for a mSATA flash cache module for Intel SRT, and that mSATA SSD's are expected later. So I assume it should work? From the specsheet: "32 GB M.2 (NGFF)Optional 32 GB mSATA flash cache module* support for Intel Smart Response Technology. (Available only with standard non-SEDhard drive.)*mSATA SSD is planned to be available in August 2013." Thanks a lot.

I had a breakthrough. And I can't believe I didn't think of this earlier - or that HP support didn't just suggest it right away. It's a really simple solution. You can't boot from a M.2 device directly. But you can boot the M.2 windows installation from the sata connected device (hdd/ssd). So if you just install windows on the sata device first, you can utilize the 100mb system partition for all other windows versions, including any on the M.2 device. No diskpart needed (assuming you have already initialized your M.2 ssd so it can be detected in windows)No BCDboot commands needed. Tested with windows 7 sp1 x64 professional.Bios settings & my notes at the buttom.Bios settings may need to be tweaked for win8/10. Step 1: Install windows on your sata attached device (hdd/ssd).Step 2: Boot into the newly installed windows*Step 2.2: Install windows from inside your first windows installation on your M.2 device.Step 3: Reboot, boot using the OS manager (which will appear in the boot order when more than 1 OS is detected). It should be top boot priority automatically.Step 3.2: Select the correct windows installation when prompted, it should be the top one.Step 4: Delete the windows installation from the boot list using cmd->msconfig. *If you want to avoid having the optical drive taking up the D: drive-letter, change it before installing windows to the M.2 device. This is purely optional, and only meant for the drive-letter obsessive people, such as myself. I have yet to find a way to end up having the M.2 windows installation as the C: drive.Right now my M.2 SSD is the D: drive, and the HDD (containing the first windows installation) is the C: drive.  Bios settings & notes:Fast boot: enabledBoot mode: UEFI hybridSata device mode: ACHI For some reason 'startup menu delay' must not be set at 0, I have mine set at 5 seconds. At 0 seconds the system will boot 'too fast' and the M.2 device will appearently not have been switched on in time for windows booting. You will get a device-undetected error. The partition style of the sata device and the M.2 device must be the same. Either both must be MBR, or both must be GPT.I tested both MBR and GPT, they both work.

  • Moving win 8.1 to msata ssd on U310 touch

    Hi all;
Just upgraded the 24GB msata to a 120 GB msata and I'm having trouble cloning the hard drive over to the ssd with Clonezilla. The plan is to move the OS to the msata ssd and wiping the original hard dirve and using it for back-up and storage. The BIOS is current set to AHCI with Lagency OS support active but trying UEFI first. I've done this before with win 7 systems; but this is my first foray into win 8.1 w/UEFI. The system does reconize and access the 120 GB Crucial M500 msata disk; it just won't mirror the 8, win-8 partitions. I reinstalled the HD and rebooted the system; to ensure I didn't mess something up and everything seems to be working; though on the slow hard drive.
Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.
PS. I did boot from the USB drive with Clonzillia on it and used the drive to drive cloning option
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Here is what I did for all the issues.
I had installed Ubuntu in this machine. Forgot the steps I did to install Ubuntu. Later I decided to upgrade the machine with 8 GB memory and 250 GB samsung EVO 480 mSATA.  The problem was moving win 8 to mSATA.
The bios had many boot entries
    1. Windows Boot manager
    2. HDD western Digital
    3. Ubuntu
    and many more.
By the way the, machine (with prebuilt win8) has SATA mode in ACHI, Boot mode in UEFI and Secure Boot Enabled and USB boot enabled by default. you can disable secure boot by first setting admin password.
I tried cloning HDD to SSD using Acronis True Image Western Digital version (Its free). But it could not clone rather it added an entry "Acronis loader" in Bios and there is no any way to remove bios entries or at least I could not find the way to remove.
during linux install, I had resized the win OS partition to create Ubuntu partition. I had no issue with the bios at that time. But when I deleted the linux partition, I no longer could access the bios again until I reflashed with bios file given here.  https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-U-V-Z-and-P-series/U310-can-no-longer-access-bios/td-p/896225...      It really works for U310 touch.
Sorry for my whole story. you probably dont need to bother with the things I said above. Now below is what I did to install windows 8 on mSATA
    A) Created UEFI bootable USB Win 8 install drive
I had win8 pro retail DVD image with serial Key. But in fact, you don't need the serial key. If you find win 8 installation DVD any way, it works because the win8 key is burned in your system Bios (Probably)
    1.  Insert USB drive ( 8GB or more, probably 4 gb works But I had 8)
    2.  make it UEFI bootable
    go to cmd (command prompt)
    diskpart
    list disk
select disk # (# is disk number of USB drive)
    clean
    create partition primary
    select partition 1
    active
    format quick fs=fat32
    assign
    exit
    exit
Now insert win8 installation dvd / mount win8 iso image
go to cmd (command prompt again) and copy the win8 installation files to USB
    xcopy d:\* f:\ /s /e
here d is win8 dvd/ win 8 iso drive letter and f is USB drive letter
    once the copy process finishes,
    exit
turn off the computer. remove the regular HDD. If you don't remove HDD, the new installation will add another boot menu for windows that is already in your HDD.
    3. Insert newly created bootable USB drive
    4. press the NOVO button(One key recovery button), go to bios setup, change the first boot device to USB, disable secure boot. you dont need to change UEFI boot and ACHI SATA operation.
    5. save and exit.
Now your computer boots from the USB drive you created. The installation process starts. select clean install, select mSATA drive.  and wait for the installation to finish. The installation will never ask you to enter the win 8 serial key. as you complete the installation, the win 8 will automatically be activated without all the bloatwares Lenovo ships with their laptop.  In my case, I had win8 pro retail DVD, but the install activated Win8 only.
Delete the win OS partition of HDD but dont delete its recovery partitions in case If you need the recovery in future.
Note: The Recovery  function of NOVO button is now useless. But you can use NOVO button for boot selection and bios setup. In fact, If you have any windows8 installation DVD/image ( you dont need serial key) , the recovery partition of  your laptop is virutally useless as you can always recover your windows by 10 minute installation rather than waiting hours for recovery from recovery partition.
    Hope this helps.

I got the hp envy 15-j052nr . It came with a HDD only .  The manual clearly says envy 15 supports msata drives. So I bought an mSATA SSD. When I put the drive in the mSATA slot, the system doesn't boot. It boots fine if I have the HDD only.  I went to the bios to try to change the boot order but I didn't see entries for HDD and SSD.   Intel raid however lists the two drives in non-raid configuration.  Windows 8 OS. Any help is appreciated.

    Hello djseeram,
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!
I understand the computer will not boot while the SSD is inserted. I will do what I can to assist you! First, I found a thread where numerous suggestions are proposed that could resolve the issue: System won't boot from SSD

I would also reference this product's maintenance and service guide to ensure you are doing everything correctly: HP ENVY 15 Notebook PC and HP ENVY TouchSmart 15 Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide
